Best Legal Kdramas

Law_School-mp1.jpeg

Chingus, we 2022 has got some fair amount of legal dramas lined up, with "Military Prosecutor" which ended a few weeks ago, "Again My Life" ending next week, and "Doctor Lawyer" starting. We have some more legal dramas already for this year's 2nd Half.

I personally love Legal dramas, not really a person from legal background, but these dramas usually have the tendency to be unique since you have several kind of different cases which can be used in such dramas.

At the same time, in such dramas, you can have at least 3 different POVs which further increases the chances of the plot being unique when compared to other legal dramas. The drama may involve Lawyers trying to save innocent guys, or Prosecutors trying to bring justice by catching bad guys, or Judges trying to be impartial. So such dramas are usually pretty interesting, and can be different from one another depending upon the writing.

Oh no, I forgot to click Juvenile Justice.  I watched it a bit later than the real broadcast time but the impact of that drama is quite memorable to me.  I love a real legal drama that "fight for justice" ... though I also watched legal dramas that were quite ridiculous sometimes.

I remembered watching "Witch's Court" ... which was quite impactful.  However, I've forgotten why.. :getmygrooveon:was it because of the cases or the leads?

I also love to see how eloquent the lawyers are but I don't have patient with "bad" lawyers ... you know what I meant right?  As for "Suits" and "The Good Wife", I watched it because I followed the original drama before .... As for how good it is ... it can be discussed for another day.

Thanks for the vote, i am surprised to see some of the results  that I voted:

I enjoyed watching so much for "Innocent Defendant" but it seems there is only one vote from me on "Innocent Defendant" ...Lol:D...this drama was so intense with comedy elements that drove the rating up for each EP, the writer even extended two more EP just to satisfy the audience...Hahaha

I watched quite a number of legal drama as it is my genre but I chose the below ones that i love enjoyed them (not in ranking order) :

  1. Innocent Defendant
  2. Juvenile Justice
  3. Vincenzo
  4. Remember: War of the Son
  5. Hyena
  6. One Ordinary Day
  7. Stranger (Forest of Secrets/Secret Forest)
  8. Whisper

Among all, I must highlight that "Whisper" is the only one that impressed me alot, not just because of the thrilling content, it is because the writer was doing such an amazing job in giving in-depth details especially in their conversation and scenes during their confrontation, I must give the full credits to the translator who did a good job in letting me to understand better in terms of the corruption of military defense contract & the intense war that involved legal firm. The 'twist' factor was the most exciting one, right from the start till the end. If I have more time, I wouldn't mind to rewatch this drama, it's worth spending :)

I am currently watching Spanish drama, "Money Heist" Season 5, wow wow wow, such an amazing drama, no wonder hit No. 1 in Netflix for long period of time and achieved several European International awards..

No Problem Chingu, I think next time you watch a legal drama, it will be when your Oppa Daniel Choi will be doing one :rubchin:

I have paused that drama on ep 2 for now, since I have not been in the mood to watch something dark these days. But I will surely go back and watch it when I get back in the mood :eats:

I usually look for the real legal fight in such dramas, but then again, I have enjoyed the likes of "My Suspicious Partner" which did a good job bringing in some rom-com and other light moments in the drama along with the legal aspects in the plot too :piggydance:

I have watched Suits, it was a fine watch. For "The Good Wife", @agenth Chingu has recommended that drama to me many times, so I am considering watching it very soon :exercice:

Chingu, not many people have voted yet, and it might be the reason why some dramas have single or no vote at all. I loved watching "Innocent Defendant", it was intense, fast paced and pretty interesting :approves:

I watched this drama back then when it aired, so don't remember much apart from few scenes and the plot. But I do remember liking it a lot :hooray:

I am watching Again my life.
I enjoy it. It's rare that the ML is smart most times.

After watching and just finished love twist, it's a relief to watch LJK character who had done stupid things but was a fast learner.

The problem with these polls is that I only watch  one or two shows at a time and I forget them within 6 months or even less. Unless it's like A man in a veil which rates the most boring FL, ML storyline etc. and it sticks in my mind. Not even the abs could raise its standard for me. Then there was the unusual woman( or something) which kept me laughing at the wrong places.

I remember watching LJK in 'lawless law' but little of the story. So I'm ticking it. I am sure I watched 'while you were sleeping' and all I could remember thinking why Bae Suzy was labelled very sexy. I have nothing against or for her, but if she was very sexy and beautiful, all FLs I have watched fell into the same category.

@Sleepy Owl maybe the next poll could be on the meanest or most evil antagonist? But how to choose when the ending is kumbaya and everyone repents.

*** I always love court cases and legal processes so, I'm in for this treat. You don’t need to understand Korea legal system to be entertained by these law Korean dramas. Law Korean drama series are one of a kind. There is a different kind of thrill in them, and I absolutely love the suspense inside. It's so fun watching those prosecutors, lawyers, and even police officers take action against criminals in order to bring them to justice. Hence, these are the legal dramas that I love

:  :popcornjackson:

* Law School - I watched this drama because of Kim Bum. This drama has been enjoying high ratings and even topped Netflix ranking lists worldwide, which implies that it's good. It has a mixture of romance, horror and a kick of supernatural so, the show is packed with full of twist and turns that you will become captivated. It has a unique premise and much mystery. It is entertaining and intriguing series.

* Lawless Lawyer - I had a lot of fun watching this drama because of Lee Jun Ki. Since LJK is in, I loved the fight scenes and the plot that unfolds along the way.

* Suspicious Partner - I remember this drama was referred to with so many names. I watched this because of Ji Chang Wook. I'm glad that the show ends on a satisfying note. Overall, it's a rewarding watch. I love that I’m getting Healer vibes, even in this very different character.

*The Devil Judge - The plot of the show is set in the dystopian version of South Korea, so, this is more interesting. The trials are held through a courtroom live show aired on television. The drama is quite the roller-coaster of a watch. I can say that Ji Sung is magnetic enough in his delivery, to command your attention all on his own. On a completely shallow note, I’m struck by how much more attractive I’m finding Ji Sung here. And anytime he’s on my screen, I feel always mesmerized. Additionally, Ji Sung really sells it, with his personal charisma. I'm so relieved that he’s not dead in the drama. Well, Kang Yo Han is not all good, but he’s not all bad either.

* Suits - I love the plot of the drama that revolves around a man with no law degree mistaken for a lawyer. This misunderstanding leads him to work as a lawyer in one of the biggest law firms in New York City. This is based on the American television series with the same name. The storyline is similar in many ways to the American one, but there is a slight twist. I’ve been enjoying Park Hyung Sik more and more in each drama I’ve seen him in. While I found it very pleasant indeed to have Jang Dong Gun  on my screen again. I love their simmering bromance here.

*Defendant - Ji Sung here is a prosecutor at Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office. One day he finds himself as a convict on death row. What's interesting is he doesn’t remember a thing due to his temporary amnesia. Therefore, figuring out how and why he has landed up in jail is quite unclear and frustrating for him. I love all his struggles in the worst ways trying to recall all the incidents and clearing his name.

*Vincenzo - Once you start watching this drama, and the story start to fold into many layers, then getting out and drop this drama is never an option. I watched this drama because of Taecyeon & Song Jong Ki.

Taecyeon is really breathtaking here in his 1st villain role. Everything in Vincenzo was well-executed. The hard work paid off because it's always the top show on Netflix's Top 10. Song Jong Ki showed a variety of emotions in this series. This drama was definitely made for him and I can't imagine anyone else playing the role. For those who still haven't watched the drama yet, I swear, this series will not disappoint you! The beginning is compelling, the ending is realistic and satisfying, and everything in between is just simply exceptional. It's what you'd expect an amazing K-drama to be and it goes beyond the hype it received. Vincenzo Cassano said in an EP that "To find a true friend is like finding a treasure," and I couldn't agree more—to find a K-drama this good is truly like finding gold.

*Touch Your Heart - I watched this drama because of Lee Dong Wook. The drama is fun to watch. I did think that Lee Dong Wook and Yoo In Na shared good chemistry in what I did see of their shared screen time in that show. I actually managed to enjoy and finish the drama.

*Hyena - I watched this drama because of Ju Ji Hoon. Both Kim Hye Soo and JJH give fantastic performances, and they share a very sparky chemistry.

* One Ordinary Day - I watched this drama because of Kim Soo Hyun. For me, this drama is one of the best dramas last year. It's just that if you're looking at the drama expecting a satisfying conclusion, you're looking in the wrong place. This isn't a drama that will give you the sort of clean closed ending that many crime dramas do, so, this may not let you feel good. Hyun Soo here has returned to life. Even free, he can't return to his old life. He can't fix anything, and this is his new reality. So "One Ordinary Day" doesn't leave you fulfilled. Some may feel unsatisfied. Still, Kim Soo Hyun and Chae Seung Won are as amazing as ever! KSH's acting in this drama is mind blowing. I'm very glad I watched this. This is a remake - I've never watched the original show, so there's no comparison for me on that part.

*Welcome 2 Life - Rain is, of course, one big reason for watching this drama. The romance in this drama is subtle but beautifully captured. This series displayed a mature love.

*waving hands* hello everyone. :D thank you for tagging me on this event. I really appreciated that. I still remember when I got hooked on the first episode because of actor Lee Joon Ki from Lawless Lawyer 2018, so in this action-packed korean law drama, watch how Bong Sang Pil, a gangster turned lawyer avenges his mother using both his fists and his skills to fight corruption. this 16 episodes nail-biting drama is one I'll not want to miss. it's really a good drama. not to mention that the whole casting is on fire. anyhow, I check out these thrilling korean crime dramas as mentioned on the polls. I watched the latest best legal kdrama everyone can't stop talking about Again My Life. and of course, there is Lee Joon Gi, he always takes good characters that he values, charismatic characters and charismatic plots, Again My Life doesn't have a 'genius' script but it delivers a very charismatic and fun plot to watch and it's simple and charismatic drama even if a little cliche still has a lot of traction in South Korea. basically, this drama is the TV adaptation of the web novel Again My Life follows the revenge of prosecutor Kim Hee Woo (Lee Joon Gi), who got murdered while pursuing the corruption of Jo Tae Seop (Lee Kyung Young), who runs the political and business world of Korea. both Kim Jae Kyung who plays as Kim Han Mi and Hong Bi Ra who plays as Kim Gyu Ri have better chemistry with Joon Gi Ssi more than the lead actress Kim Ji Eun who plays Kim Hee A. I would like to see either of them end up with Kim Hee Woo. I find it'll be refreshing to watch. but this story doesn't need a female lead with romance with Joon Gi Ssi. the story super good interesting and hooking without romance story. Joon Gi Ssi is always my favourite actor. and the female lead Kim Ji Eun has cute chubby cheeks. I like her cute vibes yet pulling off serious scenes so well too. the other female characters are my favorite. I like how sassy, stubborn and gutsy they are. Again My Life has come to an end. how will this revenge that Kim Hee Woo (Lee Joon Gi) he risked his life on and had planned out a perfect plan comes out to be? :D at the time of this airing, fourteen episodes have premiered so far and there are still two more episodes to go this season. :D

Thank you for tagging me here @Sleepy Owl

Wow, did not know there were so many legal dramas.    You must have spent hours compiling this, sunbae-nim!  Good job!

So far I have watched 3 out of the above but chose my favourite 2.
The one I like most, amongst the 2 is I HEAR YOUR VOICE.

I have finished only 3 legal dramas, as it isn't a genre I particularly prefer.

I have dropped about 8 of those on the list. Oops! :grimace:

My favorite legal drama is hands down Your Honor with my Yoon Shi Yoon oppa. It has heart and soul, and an interesting story line where a criminal takes on his twin brother's role as a judge (by "mistake")... Real judge brother disappears and criminal brother ends up disguising as Judge Brother in order to hide from some thugs. Neither brother like the other at all...

Yoon Shi Yoon oppa plays both brothers perfectly !

Sounds interesting? It is!

I actually liked the drama so much I watched it twice. @larus

It also has a lot of fun moments - criminal brother entering his twin's apartment :joy:

Thanks for the tag @Sleepy Owl!

I don't think I've seen a legal themed Kdrama, but I can recall seeing some clips...sadly I can't really remember the title, nor am I sure it is a Kdrama LOL, but if anyone can tell which drama has a gifted autistic(?) teenager at the center of litigation, I'll add to my for watching list.

Vincenzo's star Inzaghi is also winking at me to sit and enjoy watching it, hahaha!

 guys!

Thank you so much @Sleepy Owl for the tag as always. Already voted! But I've only watched 2 legal dramas out of 35 legal dramas listed in the poll so far. Am I proud of myself or what?? Ha ha ha.. :joy: Just kidding! Legal dramas are not one of my most favorite dramas at all...

I am sure other chingus has a lot to say! have fun, guys.... :)

you watched two; I only watched one! innocent defendant was the only one I sat through.

maybe legal drama kdrama style is not really my cup of tea? I don't know. maybe kdramas tend to amp up the angst a bit too much with legal that I don't want to watch? not sure....

I don't mind detective murder mystery + legal combo but that usually shows up in jodramas more. does anyone remember "hero" -- there was something low key that I loved about it. am surprised that it was never re-made into a kdrama.

I voted for Forest of Secrets and One Ordinary Day.  I also liked Juvenile Justice and Hyena.  I loved the main character in Forest of Secret and the mystery.  Oh and I loved Hwang Si mok and Han Yeo jin-- chemistry that isn't romantic.   I didn't care for season 2 as much.  One Ordinary Day was very well done.  One thing I could have done without was Shin Joong han toe jam or toe eczema, whatever it was.  He was seemed to be picking at his toes when I was eating

@Sleepy Owl I dunno if I can vote for the best as I haven't really watched that many! In particular, post-2019 era, I've really not watched any.

I enjoyed I Can Hear Your Voice because of a young, boyish Lee Jong Suk and I think Lee Bo Young (whom I think is pretty amazing) won an award for her portrayal of a role that isn't typical of her, in a noona romance. And Ms Hammurabi introduced me to L. Needless to say Lawless Lawyer gave Lee Joon Gi an opportunity to leverage on his kick-*** ability. Witch's Court was really fun to watch though I stayed on for many episodes and only got a paltry romance. And finally, While You Were Sleeping, had legal components but to me, it was more fantasy, and I got to watch Lee Jong Suk act cutesy and clumsy, which was rather hilarious.

Kdramas focus on the emotional aspect, exploiting it from many angles, which kind of involve the greater scheme going on in the background until the last moment (dramatic reveal of the villain around four episodes to the end).

Jdramas are more episodic, thematic formulas, lesson-oriented, without the additional dramatic element (usually). Sometimes they have the revenge or corruption plotline in the background, but mostly - like Hero for example - it presents more the everyday aspect, the 'boring' part of the day-to-day job and ordinary human's life.

(Hero als has starred Kimura Takuya who actually make the drama so much more... unique so to say.)

I watch Jdramas for this vibes exactly, but too many in a row, and you get a bit bored (the mundane aspect is also it's weak point, they don't have that trail of excitement you follow from one episode to the next). Most of them, at least.

Okay, so, as for legal Kdramas. I've liked Law School the most, bacuase we have a lot of law incorporated, quoted word to word and all ot that mojo, and the plot was centered around the law (a theory-practice formula, I'd call it?). They talked about legal solutions to the problems arise, have classes about it, court cases. Also Yangcrates in the first class was... something else. Literally.

Also the main story was interesting, characters well written and portrayed. A bit heavy, if you're not in the mood, but generally, very good.

Others from the list I've watched (Innocent defendant, Vincenzo, One Ordinary Day, While You Were Asleep) are more playing with law in the background, focused in characters moral choices and the bigger scheme,  which is also interesting, but less... satisfying when you want to watch the inner workings of people working in the 'business' without the other aspects of the plot interfering and adding more layers to the plot.

The Devil Judge was a nice break from the usual legal dramas, with kinda dystopian world and different rules.

Quite interesting (the show idea mostly), but it has some annoying elements (characters' morals where too strong of the contrast with each other, to little grey in between for me), so I didn't make it to the end, but I quite liked the concept, and the soundtrack. And visuals.

Almost forgot about Delayed Justice!

Spoiler

I liked the dynamic of the main duo. The cases were nice and they less than 'professional' take on them was also funny. How could they went so far without seeing the corruptoon and manipulation for what it was, I don't know, but it was fun to watch them interact, struggle and come on top, or defeated, equally. Good show. Shame it ended like it did.

I probably watched same more, when I have a phase on the genre, but don't remember them (which is a sign itself).

I enjoy it. It's rare that the ML is smart most times.

After watching and just finished love twist, it's a relief to watch LJK character who had done stupid things but was a fast learner.

I am watching that drama as well Chingu and totally agree with you. We don't usually see ML being that smart despite knowing the future. What I like about him is also the fact that he is usually calm and patient all the time, he is not rushing things in his plan and making his moves carefully.

The only reason that drama is not in the list is because it is still ongoing. I hope this drama ends well :exercice:

@Sleepy Owl maybe the next poll could be on the meanest or most evil antagonist? But how to choose when the ending is kumbaya and everyone repents.

I like this idea! I will add it to the list of possible events Chingu, Thank You for the suggestion! :biubiu:

@willenette Chingu, I have watched almost all the dramas you have talked about in your post (didn't watch "Touch Your Heart" and "Hyena"). I enjoyed watching them as well. Such a detailed description about all of them, I loved reading about them :fullofhearts:

@twinkle_little_star Chingu, I liked watching "Lawless Lawyer" and enjoying "Again My Life" as well :eats:

Oh no, none whatsoever.  Bad literally means bad ... like planting evidence ..... threaten the victims etc....

Oh, so you meant the bad lawyers in the dramas? Well, for me, I find the bad lawyers, bad prosecutors and bad judges all the same, and we usually have at least one character that fits in either of these categories.

I agree on this with you. Also I think that must be the case with other adapted legal dramas like "Legal High" which was adapted from a Japanese drama with the same name if I am not wrong, and "The Good Wife" was adapted from an English Series.

So I think this must be the reason why such dramas are different while having the same basic plot is them being adapted with cases and laws based on in SK.

That was a very good drama Noona. I started watching it not really expecting much from it since the plot itself was the type which could go either ways. But then I was surprised by the writing and the performance of everyone in this drama.

It had its light moments, and also some really good moments where the criminal brother would show how to be a good judge. I will most probably re-watch this drama this year :issohappy:

Innocent Defendant was a good watch for me, I have thought about re-watching it from time to time, but have been hesitant about it since it was pretty intense and draining at times.

I do agree that legal kdramas become intense at times by amping up the angst (sometimes too much as you said), so I do see why not many like those dramas :eats:

Forest of Secrets was a rather slow, but interesting drama. You had to watch it carefully since the writer would connect things in a way that viewers would never even think about. I did enjoy the 1st season more than I did for the 2nd season too, and I believe there will be a 3rd season as well seeing how 2nd season ended.

Hwang Si Mok and Han Yeo Jin's chemistry was pretty was in both seasons. In second season they did bring in the politics and power struggle between Prosecutors and Police when it came to investigation rights, because of which we did see them kinda less in S2 compared to S1 (maybe I am wrong, but that is what I felt).

One Ordinary day is in my watchlist, and so is Juvenile Justice :hooray:

What I liked about "I Can Hear Your Voice" was the fact that while there was Noona Romance happening, they didn't let it take the driving seat in the drama. The drama still remained mostly about the cases, and also on the main case. Something, which I believe has become rare these days where mostly the romance ends up taking more screen time than the actual plotline (from what I have seen mostly).

Ms. Hammurabi while I found it to be an interesting concept, and did understand writer's POV, but I felt like it was lacking in writing. The FL was impulsive and annoying at times despite being right about what she was talking about. Honestly, I kept watching this drama only because of Lee Elijah

spacer.png    :heart2beat:

In Lawless Lawyer as well, the plot somehow got swayed away in between, but then overall it was a good watch for me.

As for While You Sleeping, I do agree it was more of a fantasy drama, but it had huge legal components, so maybe we can say it was fantasy legal drama :rubchin:

Concept was good, so was soundtrack, and visuals. But the annoying characters remained annoying till the end and didn't really grow as character is what I didn't like. Being morally too strong is something, but what I had seen was that those character would sometimes do certain things which would make them look as hypocrites. Also, being morally too strong is something, but being too easy to manipulate is something else, these characters were both.

I liked the concept, but the writing wasn't that good, and character development was usually happening in a negative manner.

I give it a try, because the concept sounds  intriguing, and the first two, three episodes not badly written (yet), but then the plot started to be illogical, characters behavior inconsequential, so I've dropped it mainly because of characters development.

Still listening the theme songs, strong, good, fitting the concept. Hope they pick it again in on a different occasion.

I am very bad at dropping dramas, and still hoped for the 2nd leads to get better, but they never did. I didn't really regret not dropping it, but I understand why people dropped it.

I also still listen to its OSTs :eats:

Dude was playing 4D or maybe even 5D chess, and only he knew about it. Even the viewers didn't know about it for sometime.
