Kim Soo-hyun (Hangul: 김수현; Hanja: 金秀賢; born February 16, 1988) is a South Korean actor best known for his roles in the television dramas Dream High (2011), Moon Embracing the Sun (2012), My Love from the Star (2013) and The Producers (2015), as well as the films The Thieves (2012) , Secretly, Greatly (2013) and Real (2017).

Kim was Gallup Korea's Actor of the Year in 2014.[1] He was first included in Forbes Korea Power Celebrity list in 2013 placing fourth,[2] subsequently ranking second in 2015[3] and fifth in 2016.[4] The business magazine's Asia edition also listed him in its 30 under 30 in 2016.[5] The success of his television dramas throughout Asia established him as a top Hallyu star.

 

Kim's mother encouraged him to take acting classes during his high school years to help overcome his introverted personality. His father is Kim Chung-hoon and was the lead singer of the 80's band "Seven Dolphins".[6] He enrolled at Chung-Ang University's Film and Theater Department in 2009.[7]

In 2015, it was revealed to the public that Kim has a paternal half-sister named Kim Ju-na, a singer.[8] His cousin, Lee Sa-rang (real name Lee Jae-hyun), directed his latest film, Real (2017).[9][10]

Bowling

 

A bowling enthusiast, Kim applied to become a professional bowler in October 2016. He ranked 10th out of the 114 participants on his first try-out tournament but failed to make the cut on the second, falling short of the 200 points needed to qualify with only 192.3.

Military enlistment

Kim enlisted as an active duty soldier and began his mandatory military service on October 23, 2017. He entered a military camp in Paju, Gyeonggi Province to complete his basic training.[56][57] In late November 2017, his agency announced that Kim had completed his five weeks basic training placing fourth as an outstanding trainee.[58] He was assigned to the first Reconnaissance Battalion to continue his duty.

His military service is set to be completed on July 22, 2019

Philanthropy[edit]

Since, 2012, Kim and his fans have donated a total of 20 tons of rice every year to help those in need.[91]

In April 2014, during his tour of Asia Kim donated about ₩200 million to the China Children & Teenager's Fund from a Gucci charity event.[92] He also joined Yellow Ribbon Campaign[93] and donated ₩300 million to help the teenage victims of Sewol ferry tragedy.[94]

In January 2017, Kim along with 32 top stars of South Korea joined an online fund raising event, Give Love, to help NGO dedicated to protecting children's rights.[95]

In February 2020, Kim delivered ₩100 million in donations related to COVID-19 to support low income families.[96]

Endorsements[edit]

Kim has been regarded as the 'King of product endorsements' by media outlets;[97] and has been the face of variety of products ranging from food, clothing, electronics, telecoms to automobiles and more.[98] He started emerging as a blue chip in the advertising industry soon after he grabbed viewer's attention through his acting in Giant.[99] But when he starred in Moon Embracing the Sun, he set the record of being the face of 17 products simultaneously overtaking figure skater Yuna Kim, who had set the record back in 2009 by amassing 15 endorsements.[34] Kim became most in-demand advertising model after his drama My Love From the Star [47] with appearing in more than 30 advertisements, including 10 airing in China and other Asian counties.[100] Kim has also been the face of Jeju airlines and main character of a Chinese video game.[101][102]

In 2015, Kim along with Yuna Kim won grand prizes at the National Brand Awards for improving Korea's brand image.[103]

On September 13, 2021, Kim was selected as a global ambassador for Tommy Hilfiger.[104]

Personal life[edit]

In March 2015, Kim was awarded for being a model taxpayer by the local tax office for faithfully paying taxes every Tax Day.[105]

In July 2015, it was revealed that Kim has a paternal half-sister named Kim Ju-na, a singer.[106]

Bowling[edit]

He's so cuuute *_*. I've only watched on episode of Will It Snow... and I like himm <3 I need to watch the other episode (so I can edit ep 3 subs XD)

But anwyay.. Does anyone know more about him though? I googled his name in Korean.. and I got all these @__@;; pictures.. And it's from some.. internet shopping mall... scandal? My Korean still isnt THAT good, so I put it in google translator... I got the gist of it but it's still o___O;;;?!... haha D:.

Gosh KSH is sexy - I first saw him in WISFC, which I hope brought him a lot of publicity! I heard he was going to be in Father's House too... I'll have to watch out for that!

I didn't realize he was as old as he is though - he doesn't really look 21 (his face still has that boyish charm to it! :)).

And ArtemisRider - thank you for the links to SSGB! I didn't know that he hosted that with Seungyeon - there were a lot of funny related clips on Youtube.

Just found out about Soo Hyun from "Will It Snow at Christmas" drama.

Really impressed me with his great acting skills plus he is so handsome!!

I thought he was younger than me at first too lol but yay he's older :lol:.

He's got potential, can't wait to see more works from him! :D
