this is such a hard list to choose -- why do I have so many super ajusshi oppas and grandpa oppas? bwahahhahah.... my grandpa oppa list is going to be hard to narrow because I love many of these actors even when I don't know their names. even when they are playing villain, they are so much entertaining to watch.

 

sharing some of my favs who are not part of the list!  

if you have not seen the weekend drama "my perfect sons" / "sons of sol pharmacy" -- please do! it is hilarious, heart warming and has some of the funniest couplings. ji chang wook got his break and started getting more well-known after this drama. he is such a baby in that drama! hahahahha... sharing some of the ajusshis from that drama.

 

 

 

Son Hyun Joo -- age 55

played the eldest brother (middle blue tracksuit) saw him in so many dramas I initially started watching. he always brings a warmth, a seriousness and a sense of humour to his roles. awww.

 

Lee Pil Mo - age 46

he played the second brother (middle with doggy t-shirt) and was hilariously funny. he can make immature men look awkwardly endearing.

 

Han Sang Jin - age 43

played the third brother (left, checked shirt and suit) some of his other dramas, he displayed a more serious melodramatic kind of vibe but in sol pharmacy, his comic timing was hilarious.

 

how you can beat such hilarious expression?  someone tell me that you have seen this drama and love it as much as I do! hahahahahah...

so this poll was so hard to narrow down --

had 8 choices for ajusshi oppas, 9 choices for super ajusshi oppas and 13 choices for grandpa oppas. bwahahahah... one would think that my list would be longer for the younger oppas and instead it is the reverse.

 

so I watch a lot of weekend/daily dramas which means I have seen these grandpa oppas a lot. some of them are in favourite dramas and the warmth they brought to each character means they are quite memorable even I don't remember their name. what I enjoy abut these senior actors is their versatility. given their age, they are pretty much stuck grandpas and appas or older side characters who are usually villainous. yet, they make each character unique. you never get the sense they are repeating a character from before and they bring something new to the character -- this means each appa and grandpa feels different as well as real. they might exasperate you but you never think the character as unrealistic -- instead, they feel lived in and you can recognize them in your father, uncles and other relatives in our real life. with greying hairs/bald head, wrinkles, you might think they disappear next to good looking oppas but these actors have such great presence that they own the screen the moment they are on camera. many of my favourites also have amazing lovely gravelly voices -- what is the right word? bass?

 

since I couldn't vote for them all, will share more in posts on the role/drama that made these actors stand out to me.

@maribella ~ sons of sol pharmacy / my too perfect sons is hilarious. I was feeling really low when I started watched it and at the end of the first two episodes, I was rolling with laughter. it was funny even when I re-watched it a few years later. add it to your list -- I would highly recommend it.

 

 

the drama had some great ajusshis who are on my list

 

Yun Ju Sang

I love his strong gravelly voice and the way he smirks and snarks when he is annoyed. those expressions crack me up in whichever drama he is and the characters he plays often end up amusing me. he also manages to twinge the comedy with a sense of pathos and pain -- so these characters are not just jokers. they have had lives, they have made mistakes and you feel for them. whether it is was "live up to your name", "high society" or "sons of sol pharmacy", he was great.

 

Baek Il Seob (striped tee with fanny pack) -- he has played the cranky father in two of my favourite weekend drams, "sons of sol pharmacy" and "ojakgyo brothers". he has a great comic timing. he seems to be a lot like the characters he plays. if you have seen him in "grandpa over flowers", a variety show (where this pic is from), you would laugh. he is basically everyone's cranky lovable dad.

 

Kim Yong Geon (blue jacket right) -- he has played the flawed father role with a lot of warmth in many of my favourite dramas - "what happens to my family", "master's sun", "ojakygo brothers", "sons of sol pharmacy"... reminds me of this dialogue in sol pharmacy -- "parents are just people who lived a few years before you" -- meaning parents can make mistakes too. there is something so lovable and earnest about his characters even when they are less than perfect. he was also in the same variety show and was fantastic to watch.

he played the father in one of my favourite weekend dramas "what happens to my family?". the father was  lovable, serious but also memorable. he felt pain but he wasn't drowning in it. he kept the drama centered from swinging into different extremes. he wasn't the side appa character like it happens in many dramas. this was a drama where I don't remember the younger actors at all. instead it was this appa character, other older actors, as well as the first daughter pairing that stood out to me. it is available on netflix now. so check it out if you haven't seen it -- a great family drama.

 

Park Young Gyu

a lovely laugh, a great smile and a cheerful warm spirit is what I associate this actor (right in grey squares suit) due to dramas like "protect the boss" and "mr duke" . he can be serious like in "monster" but he still seems approachable. he also seems more fashion conscious and has some nice suits. hahahahah... looking for old school romance comedy, check out "protect the boss" and "mr duke"

 

Lee Deok Hwa

wily, cunning, shrewd but still human -- this was the character that he played in "giant". he has a great voice and screen presence. hard to ignore those bushy eyebrows and the way he scrunches them. hahahaha... if you are in the mood for some modern historical drama (covers the development of Seoul from 60s-80s), check out "giant" -- it is also the drama where I first noticed Kim Soo Hyun who made a great impression in the childhood portion of the drama and you feel for him so much.

Don't worry. I am sure Won Bin understands.

 

Won Bin hasn't made a movie since his huge hit The Man From Nowhere in 2010. To my knowledge he hasn't retired but he hasn't either done anything else than CFs since then. He's definitely the number one actor in Korea and totally untouchable. To Koreans he is also the most handsome actor in Korea.

I tend to watch a lot of family/weekend/daily drama and so you get attached to these characters as you spend so many months watching them. so it is no surprise that some of these grandpa oppas were in my favourite weekend dramas.

 

Choi Jung Woo

"five enough" -- this is one of my favourite weekend dramas. even with a re-watch with my mom, I loved it. so it is no surprise that it has some actors that I liked. loved the way he played father-in-law. one of the memorable scenes in the drama is one where his character interacts with the stepchildren of his son-in-law. he made some mistakes and has to try make peace with these children. the warmth, the way he bumbled through and ultimately won these two girls who were not related to him by blood, awww! it was a treat to watch.

 

Jang Yong

he has played the warm, melo dad in gems like "my husband got a family", "five enough" . even though he seemed to be just in the background, when his adult children need some advice, his character always step up quietly, offers a drink, bowl of noodles and just listen. so much warmth! if you have not seen the weekend drama "my husband got a family" -- check it out. one of those weekend dramas that is warm and very funny.

 

so there you -- my final fangirling notes on grandpa oppas because they too deserve some love.

The guy who is sitting is really popular in Hwarang together with Park of What happens. My memory does not work too well with Korean names.
I liked this show but as usual there is some corny side story.

 

I thought Won Bin is the guy with nasal cancer, but I think this guy was with Song HK in Autumn story.

 

Anyway, I cannot rewatch that trilogy, maybe Winter Sonata.

I have only seen won bin in "nowhere man" and nothing else. I never got around to watching autumn story. the fauxcest angle was too weird for me. winter sonata is weirdly addictive. I watched it just to see what the hype was about. I was rolling my eyes initially but before I knew, I was hooked and I had to binge watch and finish. bwhahahaha..

I've been waiting for this.  Too bad that Namgoong Min isn't on My Ultimate AHJUSSI Oppa list! I only have Won Bin in that section!!!  And only watched him in Autumn in My heart! He was super hot in it!!!!  I think I had a crush on him back then. 

 

But Grandpa oppas are the best of the best. I think I have more than 4 options to choose on 61+ oppas.  How sweet??!
