Noona Romances With The Best Chemistry

dummy.jpeg?s=900x600&e=t

Love them or hate them, noona romances have been popular in kdramas for a long time.

In some dramas we had huge age gaps (e.g. Witch's Romance and Secret Love Affair had 20 year age gaps).

In some dramas the Female Lead really struggled internally with the age gap before giving in (e.g. I Hear Your Voice, Dal Ja's Spring, Oh My Lady!).

In some dramas the younger men allowed the Female Lead to start anew (e.g. Something In The Rain and The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry).

In some dramas the Female Lead had a one-night stand with a younger guy, only to find herself in a dilemma when she found out that she's pregnant and the father is much younger (e.g. I Do, I Do).

In some dramas the Female Lead got stuck with an immature and obnoxious younger guy, but couldn't resist falling in love with him anyway (e.g. Empress Ki, My Name Is Kim Sam Soon).

Yup, I think it was quite obvious in all of these dramas that the actresses were older than the actors. But The Glory definitely wins. There was no one who was gonna believe they had a 2 year age gap, when the FL is 14 years older than the ML IRL. :sweatingbullets:

Chingu, I have added this one in the poll. 😘We normally only take one nomination per member because we have a limited amount of space in the poll unfortunately.

Feel free to vote! :yay:

Really happy to see Secret Love Affair here. The drama shaped my classical music taste and felt like a very long, amazing movie. It felt so dark, but yet so beautiful. The main classical piece "Schuberts Fantasy" still is on my playlist and the love between the OTP was so captivating.

Didn't know the love gap between the main actors of One Night Spring, but it still is one of my favorite dramas in recent years. Definitely something I planned on rewatching quite soon.

first on the list is Secret Love Affair... no explanation needed.

I Hear Your Voice - I still remember the "bored lawyer" scene in episode 1, which I think was the funniest lawyer behaviour on Tv for me. I was appalled and amused she was behaving that way! LOL!! Their chemistry was top tier!

What's Up Fox and Dal Ja's Spring - Dal Ja's Spring has a special place in my heart as the first noona romance I ever watched. I think I fell in love with Korea because of this trope. It was a new and amazing experience. The OST was amazing, the story was hilarious and heartwarming, the characters were interesting, the actors played their parts so well.... I still love this drama all these years later! I just finished a rewatch of What's Up Fox and it still holds up... funny, heartwarming, good story... these are dramas that make me long for the good old days of KDrama...

Hyena - I was hesitant about the drama but the teaser (where you got the images from) convinced me to watch the drama. Their chemistry was FIRE!! OMG!!

My Name Is Kim Sam Soon - OG drama... My first actress love Kim Sun Ah... I love this actress to the ends of the earth. She can do no wrong in my eyes (except make some drama choices I didn't like hahahaha)

K2 - self explanatory.

Lost - the female lead's story was the story of my life...

Something In The Rain and One Spring Night... This writer knows how to make my heart beat. I look forward to her next drama!

I want to write more because I chose almost

all the couples, but I need to get back to assignments....

Search WWW with two good noona romances and I Need Romance 3. Yes, please!!

Which of the Search WWW romances did you like more? I know my favorite was the one with Lee Da Hee and Lee Jae Wook. They really complemented each other well despite the age gap.

And they had super funny scenes :D I still can't get over this "Drama Within a Drama" that tvN posted on their YT channel with the younger actor's evil scenes as a villain and Scarlet watching the makjang drama her younger love interest was playing in. :D

No wonder she had troubles separating his real life sweet personality and on-screen mean villain personality. He was very convincing as a scumbag. :D

Dal Ja's Spring has a special place in my heart as the first noona romance I ever watched. I think I fell in love with Korea because of this trope. It was a new and amazing experience. The OST was amazing, the story was hilarious and heartwarming, the characters were interesting, the actors played their parts so well....

I'm just now watching Dal Ja's Spring for the first time! Only finished the first 4 episodes, but I really like the acting, the characters (both their maturity and immaturity) and the story. It reminds me of why I fell in love with kdramas back in the day. They just don't make them like this anymore.... :bawling:

OMG yes! The most explosive chemistry I've seen in a kdrama ever. I think it's because both are actors over 40 and they have the maturity and experience from real life to portray intense sexual attraction on screen. :joy:

@partyon I haven’t watched any in the list :grimace:. I tried watching Kim Sam Soon, the FL wasn’t that much older than the ML but she was quite rough to me since I had watched winter sonata etc. I also have problems watching the actress talk in many shows, as if she had a bad face lift. Last show was the masks stuff. I got over the problem and quite enjoyed watching her.
I don’t mind the age gap as long as both are over 30. High schoolers and undergrads are out. They should be messing around with guys or gals their age and make their own experiences.

The one which I dropped had the actress in Gracious family playing a freshman. A 30 plus acting 19 or so is not easy, maybe if I had not watched her playing a mum, I might just have asked why her hands are old, or her face is so lean… . This can be the bonus choice.

Yup, I think it was quite obvious in all of these dramas that the actresses were older than the actors. But The Glory definitely wins. There was no one who was gonna believe they had a 2 year age gap, when the FL is 14 years older than the ML IRL. :sweatingbullets:

I watched SHK at an award ceremony show and the MC was profusely praising her beauty.
Perhaps the casting people did not take into account that the role was a non-glamour type, she wouldn’t be looking 10 years younger all the time.

*** For this event, I’m posing the question: “Is age really just a number?” Yes, and I prefer an “older woman/younger guy romances than vice-versa. It would feel uncomfortable for me if the genders were reversed. Why is it okay if the woman is older? I like having female characters who are old enough to feel confident in their own identities.  Even though not all of them ended up together at the end of the story, but their love story became appealing. In Korea, age is significant. Koreans have a variety of methods for properly approaching someone older than them, both in real life and in K-Dramas. When both of you are already of legal and consenting age, age gaps are most certainly simply a number when it involves love.  K-Dramas, in particular, showed that age doesn't matter when there is chemistry! If there's one trope in Korean dramas that never fails to leave hearts fluttering, it has to be noona romances. In the real world, age is, unfortunately, a very real obstacle to romances, and it can be hard to explain to your parents why you’re dating a pretty boy nine years younger and maybe still in college??? Often times, it offers a bittersweet dose of reality when the romance fails. What would make an older woman fall for a younger man? Why shouldn’t two individuals who share a bond of love and understanding be stopped from forming a romantic relationship like anyone else? Does age ever matter?

For me, the noona romances with the best chemistry in K-dramas are in these series :

Spoiler

Witch’s Romance – This drama was a great and high on my list “noona romance” for me.Witch’s Romance” boasts a larger age gap that bothered me much less. They have credible and amazing chemistry despite quite a large age gap even bigger in real life but, she’s gorgeous. This was Park Seo Joon’s first ML role and he really shines in the drama. This is the first introduction I had to him! Sigh….that it’s not on Netflix. Park Seo Joon and Uhm Jung Hwa are terrific. This drama is funny but heartwarming. And this certainly was a memorable one that quickly became a classic for me. This drama takes its genre seriously. "Witch's Romance” was a really enjoyable drama.

Encounter – First of all, I need to say this - The Cuban cinematography is amazing in the drama. Aside from this, it has this superior employee vibes but has that chill mature tinged to it like all noona, which I’ve come to actually like! The role reversal is fresh because you don’t see the Rich Woman/Poor Man dynamic. Here, it’s not just their ages but also their statuses in life seemingly worlds apart. Soo Hyun and Jin Hyuk learned to endure all things for love and stand up for their feelings despite the almost-impossible odds of being together. I love the scene where Soo Hyun asks Jin Hyuk a favor – to have ramyeon with her at a rest stop. It feels like a secret date with Soo Hyun trying to hide her face with a cap so she won’t be easily recognized and Jin Hyuk’s adorable side showing as he shows her how to slurp noodles properly. At this point, they’re not boss and employee but just two people with growing feelings for each other laughing together. I wouldn’t call Song Hye Kyo and Park Bo Gum’s chemistry explosive, but they have this deep bond that radiates from the screen. “Encounter” was one of the highest rating dramas around the time.

My Name is Kim Samsoon – I will never forget this drama. How can I? This is probably one of the classic noona romances in K-Dramas. I liked it very much because it’s one of the best all time noona romances.  This is great of this kind of genre. The characters don't make a big deal about the age difference, but it's there. The chemistry between Kim Sun-ah and Hyun Bin came up naturally. I still had a DVD of this drama so, when I tried to re-watch it, I said to myself : Hyun Bin looks like that decades ago…

Hyena – Hyena is HOT as hell and she’s fierce, powerful and complicated. Somehow the best part about noona romances for me is when it is NOT the main point of the story. Even better if FL being older is only mentioned briefly and it has little to no impact on OTP's relationship.

The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry – This drama is also good if a little dated. But, Kim Bum is superb in this drama and the chemistry with Park Hee-Jin is excellent, too.

When the Camella Blooms – This is a noona romance drama but while watching, I don’t remember him ever calling her “noona”, or is it just me? Maybe because the noona aspect isn’t the exact focus of the romance in the drama. Her being a single mother and social outcast was the bigger hurdle, and I found it a more realistic take on why age-gap relationships can be challenging.

Really happy to see Secret Love Affair here. The drama shaped my classical music taste and felt like a very long, amazing movie. It felt so dark, but yet so beautiful. The main classical piece "Schuberts Fantasy" still is on my playlist and the love between the OTP was so captivating.

I didn't watch the drama, but I like Schubert very much, can you tell me which one was it? For me Schubert is another Mozart. Try some Chamber Music, Violin/piano concertos or sonatas, it is a wealth of Classical music

I agree! It's interesting that even with a 20 year age gap they managed to have a credible on-screen relationship and the chemistry was better than most of the dramas listed in this poll.

I don’t remember why I didn’t even peek into it. Perhaps the title sounds sleazy, If it were Fox or cougar, I might have checked it out. But hyena?

Anyway in the face of so many enthused watchers,  I think I’ll try it.

It's the piece you also linked. "Schubert: Fantasy in F Minor, D.940" I heard the YouTube version you posted so many times based on the drama. The whole drama plays around it, since the Main Lead is a young, talented pianist who is able to play this four hands piece with just two.
This is a version they both play though

Spoiler

The female lead is a well known musical manager with her own music hall and becomes his teacher, who begins an affair with him over the course of the drama and hides it. Drama was so well written and well shot. The classical pieces throughout the drama created a great atmosphere.

But this classical song follows me ever since. It so beautiful.

@maribella  Yes, I do agree with you if putting this word in slang, it also can be used as a curse word. Song Hye-Kyo was first offered the lead female role, but declined. IDK why.....  I believe Hyena is an appropriate title for this drama since they are both predatory attorneys for whom the chase is the most appealing part of the game.   :kitty:

@partyon  Hyena is worth-watching. What I didn't expect that I'd root for is the chemistry and tension between the two main characters. I kinda liked that there wasn’t something huge at stake to fight for, the fight was just between the two leads. They bicker and fight like the typical cat-and-mouse tropes. The result is seeing two equally attractive and intelligent people hopelessly drawn to one another. Since Ju Ji-Hoon’s character is an ace attorney, he dresses like it, too. But the real style stealer is the FL with her androgynous wardrobe. Yet, she’s still able to come across quite sexy. I guess @Sleepy Owl dropped the drama because Hyena throws you off right away with how the romance starts between the leads. It can be incredibly annoying, but it’s the fact that it gets under your skin that makes it different. Or maybe because of the courtroom scene - Courtroom dramas could either be super boring or extra interesting. It’s a well-written series that has mastered that flirt-and-bicker chemistry between the leads.   :heart3:

Yes, agree to this, dongsaeng! You could actually feel what the leads felt through the music they played. It enhanced each scene so much. Like in the scene you posted, you could feel their sexual tension, their playfulness and their passion.

I think I said this in a previous post before, but due to this every episode felt more like a movie than an episode. When I think about it, I don't think I have seen any other drama afterwards who was able to weave in the music so well into the drama. The music is like an additional actor.
But I also remember the drama felt so heavy due to this aswell, every scene was so meaningful, it definitely wasn't a light watch. If I remember correctly, I dropped it initially and picked it up again a few weeks later.

@partyon - I guess you know my tastes by now, as I prefer suspense, mysteries, and thriller dramas, so romantic comedies are rarely on my top list unless it's highly rated and recommended to watch in the platform.

I do not watch many of the above listed although I read many commented some of which are highly recommended to watch, eg. "Secret affair"....

I watched these two whole drama :

1) Hyena - noona romance spent far less time in drama, except their kissing and sex. (although I love this couple).  Courtrooms are more suffocating than the real world, where people cheat, flatter, hide, and start destructive relationships—and that's just lawyers. I don't feel noona romance on this drama.

2) When the Camellia Blooms (Gong Hyo Jin & Kang Ha Neul) (2019) - their romance elements was not fully utilised so I don't feel much on the noona romance but this drama was so amazing and meaningful.

Strangely, I did not watch fully the below two mentioned drama, I only watched one teaser or one EP on YouTube, but I will choose them because this two couples gave you a strong sense and romantic feeling of what noona romance is here to stay:

  • For TOP noona romance romance, I would chose Something In The Rain (Son Ye Jin & Jung Hae In) (2018) and they were full with chemistry and intimacy that you would almost think Jung Hae In had a crush on Son Ye Jin during the show or after the drama.

  • For 2nd noona romance drama, I would chose WWW (Lee Da Hee & Lee Jae Wook) (2019), their chemistry were funny and comical.
