Willinette   I know that you are very knowledgable about kdramas.

Nikaa posted the info about the negotiations being ongoing for Ask the Stars to appear on a screening platform for over a year. Presumably it will be on TVN in SK so who is selling the rights- is it Studio Dragon? Is it like an auction where the highest bidder wins?
I really hope it’s on Netflix - Fingers crossed!

@Lindyloo421  Same here – I hope it will be on Netflix. The best advantage of working with Netflix is that it guarantees profits. [If Netflix purchases your content], producers do not have to worry about the possibilities of their dramas not becoming popular or failing in the market. One factor that makes Netflix popular is worldwide streaming. Being a global streaming giant has a substantial advantage in the market. Studio Dragon has produced many television series broadcast by TVN, and has produced a series of streaming television series for Netflix as well. Netflix has secured shows from a number of broadcasters, paying a big portion of the series' production costs through global licensing deals. The platform has become the most sought-after company to work with among local production companies. I read once the production company official said Netflix's generous payments offer significant relief for the production. He said that when they produce a series, making the budget is always hard for many reasons, especially with a low viewership rating for a drama.  So when Netflix purchases the license, it means they can just get on track with the production. The production studios have to solely rely on the platform. . The production company (Executive Producer) holds the copyright ownership of a drama/movie. So, they sell rights to broadcast or release the dramas ahead of time. Even the writers have to give up on their copyright in exchange of pay in their contracts. As a standard, before filming begins, production companies usually need to secure airing time-slots with the TV networks. Without a confirmed airing time-slot, it may be difficult to secure investment from investors, sponsors and casting (as actors/actresses may not want to accept offers which are not certain). Moreover, if filming wraps-up without a confirmed airing time-slot, the production companies may need to take the risk of not being able to recover its production costs if its finished drama product is not able to secure airing time. The negotiation with the TV networks and the formation of the production team take time.  There’s no bidding taking place. The production company has to go 'door-to-door' to send proposal with each network to sell the rights of a TV series. If proposals were approved by the network, they are the ones assigning the timeslot. This gave broadcasters the power to alter details, storylines, or even the concept of a series. (Production companies) had limitations as they had no choice but to accept the network's demands. This freedom from the pressures of the networks also creates better-quality dramas. There are dramas sometimes, which have a hard time getting networks because sometimes negotiations would fall apart along the way. Broadcasting networks receive so many content proposals, so they get to review and select which to work on and turn down.

8 K-Dramas With Iconic Winter Moments To Watch This Season

Winter snuggles, snowy kisses, or warm embraces – the cold frigid winter months get a romantic twist in K-dramas. Winter is often a metaphor in drama narratives, from bittersweet endings to new beginnings, and it is a time for introspection as well as bonding for some. Here are some heartwarming moments from the winter wonderland of K-dramas!

Boys Over Flowers

boys-over-flowers-lee-min-ho.jpeg

A drama that was the rite of passage for many K-drama fans across the world and is also credited with leading the Hallyu wave, “Boys Over Flowers” is another fan favorite. The classic tale of the rich arrogant boy who falls hopelessly in love with a poor girl has been immortalized by Lee Min Ho‘s Gu Jun Pyo.

One of the many moments is in episode 12, when Jun Pyo, along with the F4 and Jan Di (Ku Hye Sun), is enjoying the snow at a resort. Jan Di, who cannot ski, it is endearing to see as Jun Pyo walks slowly by her side. The same evening, when he reaches out to kiss her and give her a necklace, a sneeze ruins the moment. There’s another great moment being when our hot-headed Jun Pyo waits patiently for Jan Di in the freezing cold at Seoul Tower. It has somewhat become a symbol for lovers, from break-ups to make-ups!

The Legend of the Blue Sea

Legend-of-the-blue-sea.jpg

A fairytale romance between a conman Heo Jun Jae (Lee Min Ho) and mermaid Shim Chung (Jun Ji Hyun), “The legend of the Blue Sea” is one of the most picturesque K-dramas. From the sunny tropical scapes of Spain to Seoul, it captures the seasons along with the mood of the characters.

Jun Jae and Shim Chung, who have been denied a happily ever after in their previous life, dream of a life together, far way from the intrigues of the present. Knowing her love for the sea, he sets up their dream house by the beach, and one of the memorable moments is of the two together nestled in an embrace in the snow covered Deungmyeong beach.

Plus Jun Ji Hyun’s comic timing and Lee Min Ho’s charm makes this one a good watch.

Happy 9th (wow!) Anniversary Gangnam Blues!  I still have fond memories of watching this in a theater full of Minoz sisters.  HOpefully, I'll have another chance with ORV

*** GANGNAM BLUES is indeed a good film. Despite its "restricted" rating, it topped the box office on its opening day. Ultimately, Gangnam Blues‘ biggest value may be in getting people to think about how Gangnam go to where it is today. Lee Min-ho plays his first major leading role in a movie here.

@Lindyloo421  sorry, I missed replying you on this. This is true that negotiations with streaming partners have been going on for more than a year for "Ask the Stars". Also, no domestic broadcast channel has picked up yet though, it was previously reported to be tvN. This year so many high profile comebacks are slotted in so, it's even more challenging to get takers for such a high-budget drama. As I've mentioned in my earlier post to you, producing dramas without a confirmed OTT or network to air it in isn't working out. That's why, Studio Dragon is still negotiating to find a network to air it. It's a high-budget drama and of course, they want to find one who can pay them the most.   :kaching1:

Willenette thank you for your reply- blimey this sounds a bit worrying doesn’t it? As you say it sounded at the start as though it was going to be TVN.
Do you remember what happened with TKEM- SBS who had had such success with LMH’s previous series  went for TKEM probably expecting  to get high viewing figures but because so many people watched it on Netflix the SBS figures were lower than expected. Maybe this is what is concerning domestic channels like TVN.
The other thing that occurred to me was that TKEM had a huge amount of product placement advertising which must have brought in a small fortune - but how much product placement ads can be done in a space station!

What do other people on here think - is it time to get worried ?

@Lindyloo421  I very much agree with you about TKEM. Even trying to advertise that food delivery service. K-dramas usually have quite a bit of product placement within them and it's usually quite obvious when they're advertising a product within a scene- This only started when the Korean government forbids commercials to interrupt airings. This limits the amount of advertisement money that a network can earn, which is its main form of income. So, to help offset the cost, producers incorporate product placement.   :heart3:

Lee Min-ho, who showed his more mature acting skills with 'Pachinko', plays Yoo Jung-hyuk, the main character in the novel who has the ability to constantly return even after death. Yoo Jung-hyuk is a character who survived the ruined world of the novel until the end thanks to his unapproachable appearance and powerful fighting skills.

@CarolynH  thanks for sharing the clothing details. It's a French brand. Script-reading/table read should usually be taking place early in filming so that all the involved parties have an idea about the direction of the story, especially when you consider the fact that many actors in a drama or movie don't necessarily shoot everything together and have different scenes.   :kitty:

Lee Min-ho, Ahn Hyo-seop to lead movie adaptation of ‘Omniscient Reader’

20240124000610_0.jpg

Actors Lee Min-ho and Ahn Hyo-seop have been cast as lead actors in the movie adaptation of “Omniscient Reader,” a popular web novel that has garnered 200 million views since 2018.

“Omniscient Reader” follows the story of Kim Dok-Ja (Ahn), whose world turns upside down when the novel he’s reading comes to life. In the new world, Kim is the only one who knows the story’s ending, which is why he must do everything in his power to change the course of the outcome with Yoo Jung-hyuk (Lee), the protagonist of the novel.

The movie will be helmed by director Kim Byung-woo of “The Terror Live” (2013) and “Take Point” (2018), while Realies Pictures will produce the film. The production company was behind the “Along with the Gods” series. The film is also the global entertainment group Smilegate's first-ever investment.

Besides Lee and Ahn, “The Fabulous” star Chae Soo-bin, “Mask Girl” lead Nana and “D.P.” actor Shin Seung-ho star as characters that appear in the novel, supporting Dok-ja’s journey to save the world. Blackpink member Jisoo will star as Ji-hye, a colleague of Jung-hyuk who joins their journey. The film will mark both Ahn and Jisoo’s cinematic debut.

Jisoo appeared in a cameo role in last year’s “Dr. Cheon and Lost Talisman.”

The shooting for “Omniscient Reader” began in December, and a release date has not yet been confirmed.
