I still dont know if i should believe that story either for that same reason. SYJ would not be so casual about the matter of why HB declined potential past projects with her. She mentioned that more than once and i think deep down it hurt her a bit because she obviously followed HB's career and he was probably someone she wanted to share a project with earlier but he kept declining. Even then she was still excited when he accepted TN so she didnt resent him because of it. If she knew he kept doing that because she rejected his date offer, i think she would have been more resentful and view him as an egostical man. As a woman i know i would be extremely offended if i declined a date from someone and later on they let that influence our professional interactions. I just dont think that's the kind of man HB is. I think he simply declined past projects with SYJ because the roles did not suit his interest.

@Intuition1 @jamy47 that is why I think regardless if JWS wanted them to meet it is because he wanted them to be friends as they are the same age and they could relate to each other in their careers more. However, they both have issues/insecurities then with their careers and more focused on their careers. I still don't think the timing would have been good they might just be friends from then on and nothing would happen now lol. Reading back in one of his interviews before he went into military?, he said there were a lot of dramas/melodramas happening right now and if it works out, he wanted to eventually do action movies. That is what happened post military and why he stopped taking on melodramas/dramas. So if he turned down projects to work with her, it could have either been a melodrama or it was a movie where his character didn't have more of a lead role. However, we will never find out how many project(s) he may have turned down. We just know by the time TN offer happened, SYJ was surprised HB went for the villain role, so it made her want to work on the movie even more. Looking back at what director nim mentioned he had them in mind since he was writing the screenplay (took over 4 years in the making). So he must have started 2013/2014 time? If it was 2014 time, it makes sense since they were both in the news so much with Fatal Encounter and The Pirates, plus by the time it came to PIFAN - they both got their awards together.  So of course, he was more like they should be in my movie - why has no one cast them yet lol

If anything at all, let's be grateful that Binnie and Jinnie met for TN and eventually have given us CLOY. What is even more beautiful is, we are witnesses to their growing and evolving love.

As such, everything else is immaterial. It does not matter whether they could have met and dated in their 20's, or whether they were offered to act together earlier, but one or the other turned it down. While I admit that it is fun to indulge in, whatever amount of analyzing, scrutinizing, researching and prodding we do, we will never know. Everything will just be speculative, and I can imagine BInJin having a laugh or two over things we discuss here. I am not saying it is wrong, just misdirected...instead, our energies should be forward looking and one that is positive. Quoting a cliche, one must view the glass as half full instead of half empty. That in mind, we should not be regretting what these two could have missed before, when there is so much to look for in their future. I have said it before and saying it again, whatever Higher Being governs the universe, the meeting of HB and SYJ truly occured at the appointed time.

I don't think that pic was taken just when her friend was about to give birth, she was no longer in the US by then and as we can see in the schedule compiled by @Walk Kindly. This was likely taken during her SoCal vacation back in Dec 2017.

Spellbound started filming in late December 2010 and wrapped in April 2011. SYJ was filming Spellbound when she made her Secret Garden cameo. HB went into military service in March that year. Maybe SYJ herself ended up not doing the project or it was something very early in their careers. Their film and drama choices are very different that it's not really surprising if HB turned down any projects that SYJ ended up doing. The only SYJ movie that fits HB's blockbluster genre type is The Tower but that was filmed while he was in the Marines. SYJ also never did another rom-com drama until CLOY.

Regarding the TN commentary, there is a small detail which sets my heart fluttering when I listened to it. 

 

During the commentary, SYJ mentioned not once, but TWICE about how Ha Chae-yoon and Min Tae-gu were wearing "couple wear" - in this case both SYJ and HB were wearing long sleeve white shirts in the show.

The exact phrases she used as per the Chinese translation are 

9:43 - "couple shirt"

9:53 - "couple white shirt"

 

I have watched TN three times, but never once have it crossed my mind that they were wearing "couple wear". It is very telling how SYJ actually brought up this small detail herself, what she may be thinking/associating this "insignificant detail" with, and how far her relationship with HB had developed by the commentary recording date.

Lol I read a comment on twitter that the background is very Manila. 

 

This was definitely from the shoot his stylist first tease on her story. He was holding the orchid I now realized as I look back at it lol. So it was from around 18 days ago?

HB's shy reaction when being asked about SYJ 16 years ago. 

 

SYJ said in an interview from 2005 (April Snow movie promotion) that "I chose not to date a person I actually liked in the past".

 

So the theory that HB was trying to set up a date with SYJ and visited the set of AMTR 3x in 2003 - 2004 is possible. (a Twitter account saw news that HB visited AMTR set 3 times in an old forum).

One very interesting point about this article is that CLOY was only the next Kdrama that received domestic media attention after Winter Sonata. Though some other dramas and K-culture was popular in Japan, but the media typically under report them to protect  Japanese pop culture. Korean drama successfully crash lands on a Japanese audience

One beneficiary of the coronavirus pandemic has been the video streaming service Netflix. Stuck at home with free time on their hands, many people, rather than finally clean out the attic or write that book, turn to effortless pastimes. Binging TV serials is custom-made for these times.

 

The South Korean romantic melodrama “Crash Landing on You” is the one that has received the most attention, at least in Asia. As far as “Korean Wave” exports go, it’s standard fare: True love beset by extraordinary forces arrayed to keep our protagonists apart. Fate figures decisively in every episode. Plot twists are the rule rather than the exception. Dei ex machina run riot.

 

 

What makes “Crash Landing” generative of not only gushing fan tributes and magazine profiles but also scholarly analyses is its high-concept premise. Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin), an heir to a South Korean conglomerate, goes paragliding and is blown into North Korea, where she lands in a tree and is discovered by Ri Jeong-hyeok (Hyun Bin), a handsome army captain and the scion of a powerful political family. Forbidden love was never so forbidden, and the show runners play up this aspect exhaustively — 16 installments, each between 70 and 112 minutes in length. It’s become the must-see TV series of the pandemic, even for viewers constitutionally averse to the kind of contrived storylines and hyperbolic presentation typical of South Korean dramas.

 



For Japanese viewers, it’s no big deal. A cursory scan of satellite TV schedules reveals an appetite for South Korean drama that’s insatiable, and in line with the parallel Japanese affection for K-pop. What’s interesting about Japan’s love affair with South Korean exports is that domestic media, while recognizing its popularity, rarely gives them their proper due. Almost 20 years ago, when the drama “Winter Sonata” was a genuine phenomenon, the Korean Wave couldn’t help but generate media scrutiny. Since then, however, there’s been a zero-sum aspect to the coverage. Whatever attention the Korean Wave receives is seen to be at the expense of Japanese pop culture.

 

However, “Crash Landing” is irresistible. Hyun, the series’ heartthrob, graced the cover of the June 26 issue of the Shukan Asahi magazine, which contained a section showcasing the best Korean dramas to stream at the moment. It leaves out one of Netflix’s top-rated Korean offerings, “Mr. Sunshine,” which would seem to hold more interest for Japanese viewers. For one, it stars Lee Byung-hun, an older male heartthrob who has been popular in Japan for years. It also has a Japanese subtext in that it takes place during the years just before Japan annexed the Korean Peninsula and involves the local resistance movement. Many Korean dramas and movies are set before and during the colonial period, and sometimes these depictions offend Japanese nationalist sentiments, which hold that Japan’s control and annexation was, on the whole, benevolent. These depictions are not shy about the brutality of the era, but it has been my observation that Korean dramas tend to be harsher on Korean collaborators than on their Japanese overlords.

 

A drama about a romance that bridges the gap between two countries that are still at war comes with its own interpretive pitfalls, not least of which is the reality that it was Japan’s control of the Korean Peninsula that led to its division by the Allies after World War II. But “Crash Landing” doesn’t address history. Any portrayal of North Korea in a sympathetic light is going to be problematic in Japan given the still unresolved matter of Pyongyang’s abduction of Japanese citizens in the past, but just as “Mr. Sunshine,” despite its overwrought romantic premise, can teach Japanese viewers something about their history, “Crash Landing” gives them a glimpse of North Korean life they’re not going to find elsewhere. Viewers literate in the grammar of Korean dramas will see through the exaggerations, and North Koreans become relatable as people, or, at least, relatable as Korean drama characters.

 

One Japanese commentator sees how this aspect could conceivably offend viewers. Journalist Renge Jibu, writing in the Asahi Shimbun, admits that at first she thought there was something improper about setting a work of entertainment in North Korea. The drama only hints at the suffering North Koreans experience with regard to human rights and doesn’t indicate the fierce resentments many feel toward South Korea and the West as a result of the carnage of the Korean War. But everyday hardships, like frequent power outages and shortages of medical supplies, are carefully, sometimes comically, built into the plot, and, more significantly, while the writers do gently mock a group of North Korean soldiers as rubes when they infiltrate Seoul, they never look down on them. In the drama the good guys and bad guys in North Korea are no different from the good guys and bad guys in South Korea.

 

Another writer, Minori Kitahara in the magazine Aera, credits the Japanese popularity of the series to Hyun. Kitahara acknowledges that Jeong-hyeok is too good to be true, and, as a feminist, she finds the idea of a man who does everything to protect the woman he loves depressing, since “protection” tends to go hand-in-hand with “domination” in a patriarchal society. However, watching the show during a pandemic has had its own effect. Kitahara thinks the Japanese government has failed in its promise to “protect” its people from the physical and economic scourge of the virus, so she finds comfort in Jeong-hyeok’s humanistic attitude toward everyone he comes into contact with, and not just the object of his desire, though she credits that attitude to South Korea, which produced the drama, rather than to North Korea, which supposedly produced Jeong-hyeok.

 

A running joke is that whenever Se-ri becomes indebted to a North Korean who helps her, she says she will repay them “after reunification,” a line she invariably delivers in a weary tone. Such idealistic pronouncements have become empty over the years through overuse, and it’s unlikely, even within the extreme fantasy parameters of the tale being told, that North and South will settle their differences anytime soon. But it’s nice to imagine the possibility, if only for 16 episodes.

I just dont understand some people love to (and repeating doing it) dig ol' grandmother stuff like whatever that tweet Fanney talk about circa 2003/2004 and bring it here. It's 16 freaking years ago for Christ sake.. and that tongue close up.. God, these people are soo pervert they cant let BinJin love in peace. I am a shipper but at times I am annoyed at some overanalysed shippers. Thus I'd rather lurk until the day they announce it to the real world.
