wow, looks like the slap is continuing to whirl....

@the_sweetroad ~ didn't understand why will smith was allowed to stay and actually given the award. like many noted, if it was small fella like editor or sound person, they would have got escorted by security out... now, this morning, am seeing reports that will smith refused to leave. ummm, what????

@the_sweetroad ~ apparently chris rock didn't know jada had some medical condition with the hair ..... actually neither did I.... and it wasn't as well known as some people are claiming. I guess if you are interested in them or keeping tabs on celeb gossip, you might have known but people who are looking at world news or other stuff would not have...

interesting.... @the_sweetroad ~ many think the academy seems to be fudging that will smith was asked to leave and didn't. basically saving face is what people are thinking...

this tweets by different people captures the disbelief well --

"He “refused to leave” and they just said OK and then let him sit and laugh and win his award and cry? More info please. Why does his preference take precedent over their security measures? This doesn’t make sense to me. You?"

"I once got into a fight in a London pub in my late 20s. (Those of you who've met me know how hilarious that sentence is). The bouncer asked me to leave. Lemme tell ya, question is not debatable. Did they whisper this to Will Smith?"

"Asked to leave by whom?"

Yeah, it seemed like an "innocent" mistake, though it's still dumb for him to comment on it perhaps. Will Smith's actions were more deplorable, the more I think about it. Too bad, too - I really like him.

I know! It doesn't make logical sense. Either the Academy asked him to leave and they would enforce it (like you said, they would have enforced any other decision like that if it were a lesser-known person who committed violence during the show)....or they didn't ask him to leave because they were too shocked. I think it's the latter.

Such a strange story all around! I saw this photo of the three of them from happier times (2005). I wonder if there's been bad blood between them in more recent years?

to be honest, nothing about the incident makes much sense. when I saw the video, he was initially laughing. apparently then jada gave him an evil look, then all of a sudden smith went up and punched him. so he laughed and then got mad????? that just makes me go huh??????

and it is strange that they gave him an award and everyone clapped. I read this article by HR execs and they were like if this happened in an office event, the guy would be escorted out. who cares about the award? they could have mailed it to him some said. so yea, lot of backfooting from the academy because people are calling them out.

but going forward, it will be interesting to see what happens to the ceremony. wonder if they will get anyone to host it (apparently they had to shop a lot to find the 3 hosts for this year) ... also will people be wary of presenting and just be super formal and only say "the award for xx goes to"..... it already is a borefest; I wasn't even aware it was happening and even if I did, would not have watched.... it will get more boring going forward because no one wants to get punched on stage.

imho, i think that'll be because Will Smith is much more famous and influential.. else, he would have been escorted out.

perfect reaction gif! same here -- more than the slap, am a lot more confused by the academy.

I had heard of this incident from a HR person -- two guys started brawling in the office and apparently the fight was over some girl; they were both in love with her and she said or did something that got both annoyed at each other.... and literally, other employees had to tear them apart. so were the two allowed to stay in the office? nope. all 3 were asked to leave the premises immediately and not come back till HR figured out what to do. when they were allowed back, it was after reviews, meetings and stern warnings. the 2 guys got a black mark for their performance review which would have affected the bonus. and all 3 were sent to different teams. so that is how the normal world works.

so yea, I get will smith was more famous and influential but you would think the academy PR has some brain to think how viewers would have reacted..

Yup. And I wonder if the Academy knew he was going to get an award later, so they let him stay around so he could receive it. If he weren't about to win Best Actor - a huge award and his first Oscar - maybe things would have been different. So many bizarre factors that night!

But they should have made him leave. No one should get to do that and stay.

I used to love watching the Oscars every year...the red carpet and all the awards being given out. These days I'm so out of the loop with movies that I don't care who wins (unless it's a first Oscar for someone like Colin Firth, Brad Pitt, Leo Di Caprio, or WIll Smith), and the banter is getting so cheesy and cringey. Honestly, a formal "the award for xx goes to" would be much better!

I read that Chris Rock is in Boston doing a couple of comedy shows this week. His tickets soared after the Oscars, going from $44 to $300+. https://nypost.com/2022/03/29/chris-rocks-comedy-tour-ticket-prices-skyrocket-after-will-smith-slap/
