2. Baek Ye Rin

She recently release her solo album one of her songs 'Square (2017)' topping the music charts in Korea. 

3. Yoon Mi Rae

The 2nd OSTs that will be release this week (Sunday 22th) is sung by Yoon Mi Rae. The title of the song is 'Flower' (according to the ending credit in ep 2). Several OSTs sang by her are 'Touch Love' - Master's Sun, 'Always' - Descendants of the Sun, 'You are My World' - Legend of the Blue Sea.

4. Crush

Crush will release a new OSTs after 3 years. His last OST is 'Beautiful' - Goblin. According to the short interview he will sing a song with title 'A world for the two of them' (a literal translation from 둘 만의 세상으로 가). Crush said that the song is a ballad fitting for winter season and it is a song about lovers who wish to reach and be with each other.

There were various news articles about how Writer-nim conceived the idea of a chaebol paragliding into North Korea and what efforts have been taken to give us this drama released yesterday. Here’s my translation of some parts - and it’s not a direct translation but a paraphrase translation of interesting parts.  

 

Writer Park Ji-eun first conceived the  idea for ‘Crash Landing on You' shortly after learning about a reported incident that happened on 12 September 2008 in which a South Korean actress who fled from North Korea after being chased by a North Korean patrol ship after she lost her direction while enjoying a leisure boat that set off from Incheon. In that incident, that actress even talked to a North Korean man on the coast. Thinking that that would form an interesting material for a drama, Writer Park then collected more information and data on actual events in North and South Korea arising from maritime accidents, and wrote an initial synopsis for a proposed drama titled "The Chaebol who went to North Korea”.

 

However, it was not until 2018 that Writer Park first decided to put the synopsis into drama production. 

 

However, at a production meeting, Writer Park learned that there had been movies such as “동해물과 백두산이” (“North Korean Guys”) and “그물” (The Net”) etc that had to do with marine accidents or about North Koreans who defected to South Vietnam by boat that had been produced. So she then changed the idea to that of landing in North Korea by air instead. 

 

As she agonized over using a variety of aircrafts, including helicopters, light aircraft and paragliders as the concept for landing in North Korea, she sought advice from military experts and aviation experts in North Korea’s special forces. She learned that helicopters and light aircraft will be detected by radar, but paragliders are not detected by radar, and that the North Korea’s military has actually conducted joint military drills using paragliders in the Special Forces. So she began to investigate into incidents caused by paragliding, and found a variety of real-life cases, including the case of an Israeli woman crossing the Syrian border, a paragliding man in Haman, South Gyeongsang Province, a crash landing in the middle of a prison playground in Changwon, and an incident about a woman who was forced to crash 60 kilometers away from the eye of a typhoon during paragliding. Thus, she concluded that if there were special natural disasters such as typhoons, a paraglider could possibly enter the North without being found, and so she changed the setting to that of paragliding into the North. 

 

Eventually, after 11 years from the initial planning phase, the story finally made its debut in December this year on our small screen.

 

The story writing was completed after an extensive data survey of North Korea, which is the place set as the background of the story, as well as verification of facts about the life and lifestyles in North Korea through interviews and reading of accounts of dozens of North Korean defectors in various professional groups, including North Korean front-line military officers, wives of military officers who lived in the frontline military's private village, security command officials, marketplaces merchants, smugglers, traders, drivers, doctors and researchers, pianists, movie directors and restaurant workers who studied abroad.

 

In particular, North Korean defector Kwak Moon-an participated in the work as an assistant writer and is working on detailed final verification on aspects of the drama including the generation of ideas and scenes of North Korea. Baek Kyung-yoon, an expert on North Korean language, is also advising the directing of the drama as regards the aspects relating to North Korea. 

 

Although North Korea is a place that has been cut off from South Korea, various aspects of South Korea such as South Korea’s household goods, dramas, and K-pop culture are spreading in North Korea, and there is a widespread atmosphere of secret yearning for South Korean culture. Using practical data collected, the production team has worked hard to present to South Koreans and all of us, a lifestyle that is unfamiliar to us, and events in that unfamiliar world - all through the drama that is based in part on facts and in part, a fantasy.

 

Just as director Lee Jung-hyo has said at the drama’s press conference - The drama presents a romance story in a space known as North Korea. North Korea is just a disconnected backdrop for the romance story combined with tense events that occur in that backdrop. North Korea is the dramatic space, as it effectively portrays the stories of people living their daily lives and the forbidden romance between four men and women. The drama is not about North Korea as a regime and has nothing to do with politics.
