On CLAB Girls‘s YouTube channel, a North Korean defector Kang Narareviewed the hit K-Drama series Crash Landing On You and shared what’s real about North Korea as shown on the show.

 

Kang Nara shared that she actually had a chance to advise the Crash Landing On You production team on certain North Korean facts and that about 60% of the show’s portrayal of North Korea is accurate.

I got to help them out last summer. They came to interview me at a cafe. It’s a well made show… I would say about 60% of how North Korea is portrayed in the show is actually accurate.

According to Kang Nara, Crash Landing On You has recreated the average North Korean residence quite well. She pointed out that the team perfected the small details, like how the dining table comes without chairs so the family has to sit on the floor to eat

 

And the curtains… The richer families in North Korea like to show off their wealth by adding lace curtains to their windows. So that was pretty well portrayed… And the kimchi cave! Since rural North Korea doesn’t get electricity, they don’t have refrigerators. They have kimchi caves where they store kimchi and that was also recreated well.

As far as the visuals go, Kang Nara playfully commented that captains like Hyun Bin do not exist in North Korea — to which the viewers had a hilarious reaction:

However, she shared, the four soldiers look and sound almost natural. Their uniforms are also exactly like the ones actual North Korean soldiers wear, adding to the overall realness of the show.

I don’t know where they learned the North Korean dialect, but they are really good at it. Especially that one soldier Pyo Chi Su has it down to a T.

Kang Nara also revealed that North Korean women wear their hair tied, as it gets told in an episode. According to her, North Koreans consider it socially unacceptable.

 

It’s called saseukke when a woman has her hair down. People will comment on it, like ‘That saseukke of a weirdo’ or whatever. It’s considered unacceptable to have your hair down and wild like this. So everyone wears it in a ponytail. That’s why there is a scene that shows Hyun Bin tying Son Ye Jin’s hair. Yeah… Having your hair down is considered a sign of capitalism and not allowed.

And while the production team gets most of the North Korean fashion right, there is a scene in which the character Seo Dan (played by actress Seo Ji Hye) looks gorgeous in a trench coat and knee-high boots. Kang Nara quoted that both are rare in North Korea. In fact, she mentioned, such fashionable boots are not allowed at all.

This fashion is all too sophisticated. To be honest, not a lot of people wear trench coats in North Korea… Oh and those boots. Wearing boots like that is not allowed in North Korea. Those are called walenkki in North Korea. Women must wear their boots under their pants, to make them look like regular shoes. If you wear your walenkki to show like that, you’ll be pulled aside for inspection. So that was a big miss.

All in all, Kang Nara believed Crash Landing On You to be one of the best K-Dramas by far to depict North Korea as closely and accurately as possible. It’s no wonder the series is growing extremely popular among viewers!

TvN‘s latest hit, K-Drama Queen of Tears, starring lead actors Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Ji Won, was highly anticipated due to not only its all-star cast but also its crew, as writer Park Ji Eun is also behind the beloved K-Drama Crash Landing on You. Likewise, Queen of Tears’ directors Jang Young Woo and Kim Hee Won previously worked onCrash Landing on You.

 

 

Kim Soo Hyun, who starred in Park Ji Eun’s hit K-Dramas, My Love From the Star and The Producers, actually appeared for a moment in Crash Landing on You, reprising his role from the 2013 film action comedy-drama Secretly, Greatly. Kim cameoed on Crash Landing on You due to his longstanding relationship with writer Park.

 

 

 

Considering this, K-Drama fans have been hopeful that the Crash Landing on You couple, Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin, would make a cameo appearance inQueen of Tears.

 

 

 

Now, Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin have received not one but two shout-outs in Queen of Tears.

 

The K-Drama focuses on Baek Hyun Woo, who married heiress Hong Hae In. After a few years, he decided he wanted to divorce her, only to discover she had three months to live. Now seeing divorce as pointless, he attempted to become a devoted husband so much that Hae In would update her will to include him.

 

In Episode 4, Hyun Woo confessed he had bought his wife new comfortable shoes. So, his friend, Kim Yang Ki (Moon Tae Yu), became suspicious that in caring for her, Hyun Woo is falling in love with his wife all over again. Yang Ki compared it to co-stars who fall in love, namedropping Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin, who famously married each other in real life after filming Crash Landing on You together. The two now even have a child together.

You know how actors fall in love for real while filming romantic scenes together. Like Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization announced on the 21st that they will support the development and promotion of seven types of tourism products for visiting Korea . These include ‘Meeting Korean Wave Content with Fascinating History and Culture’, ‘K- Dance: Tonight’s Main Character Is Me’, ‘Marry My Husband Drama Tour’, and ‘A Day in Pyeongchang with Samyang’. 

It is a package tour planned jointly by a domestic travel agency and a K- content company. We guide you to K- pop and K-drama attractions and provide special experience opportunities. This is a result that reflects the high interest in K- content. 

 

According to a survey of foreign tourists in the fourth quarter of last year, the biggest reason foreigners became interested in visiting Korea was 'after encountering Korean Wave content ( 31.9%).' 

However, many foreign visitors have had difficulty visiting K- content filming locations. Travel agencies were also unable to use Korean Wave stars or works due to content intellectual property ( IP ) issues. 

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has provided opportunities for cooperation, such as joint product development, through a contest. We encouraged the conclusion of business agreements between companies and supported initial costs for smooth IP use negotiations. It will also support a portion of future IP costs, product planning costs, and promotional costs. In order to quickly establish itself, various marketing projects are being carried out in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. 

Park Jong-taek, Director of Tourism Policy at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said, “We will pursue this as a pilot project by reflecting the voices of the tourism industry,” and added, “We expect it to be a catalyst for developing new winter products.”

The Korean Wave musical 'Crash Landing on You' will continue its box office success with an encore performance in Tokyo, Japan in July. 

On the 24th, production company A2G Entertainment and Astin Camel confirmed to hold an encore performance of the musical 'Crash Landing on You' at the New National Theater in Tokyo from July 7 to 21. 

The New National Theater in Tokyo is a representative venue known as the mecca of Japanese opera performances, and the musical 'Crash Landing on You' is the first Korean musical to be staged at the New National Theater, proving its extraordinary box office power.

The production company said, “We are grateful for the interest in K-Musical from many Japanese fans and officials, and we will do our best for this encore performance,” adding, “We will prepare to show an improved performance compared to the February performance.” 

The Tokyo performance of the musical 'Crash Landing on You', which premiered last February, was attended by fans of the original drama 'Crash Landing on You', fans of the Korean Wave stars appearing in the musical, and even fans of the musical, creating a 'nth degree viewing' craze of 10 people. It received favorable reviews for its performance that satisfied fans of various age groups, from those in their 50s to those in their 50s. 

'Crash Landing on You', which continued to be a box-office hit until the very end, selling out all tickets consecutively, has decided to hold an encore performance in Tokyo in July in response to continued requests from fans who have not yet seen the performance.

For this encore stage, actors from the Tokyo performance in February will be recast and work together. Astro member Yoon San-ha will play the main character Ri Jeong-hyeok, Kim Ryeo-won, a talented and trustworthy musical actor, will appear on stage as Yoon Se-ri, Astro member Jinjin will play Gu Seung-jun, and Ji Soo-yeon, a member of Weki Meki who is also an active musical actor, will play the role of Seo-dan.
