Are we sure it is a failure in SK?  What is the role of Naver?  How important it is to the popularity of a drama? If people are searching King, won't they watch it?

 

People think it’s a failure in South Korea because of the ratings. But it’s consistently number 1 on Wavve, which has 15 million subscribers. Add Netflix’s 2 million South Korean subscribers on top of that and the amount of South Korean viewers should be no joke. Of course critics only want to focus on the ratings but otherwise, it’s performing pretty well. Sure it’s not as big of a hit as other dramas but it’s by no means a failure. Though we do have to keep in mind, cable dramas are not on Wavve, if I am correct. Wavve is owned by SBS, MBC, and KBS and likely airs their dramas. Note, most hit dramas this year came from cable TV and in general, public channels aren’t performing well. It could be because of the introduction of Wavve which launched late last year. Of course The King could be performing better in terms of ratings but it is what it is. It’s nowhere as bad as it looks though.

Hey, of course I wouldnt mind. I am Turkish. Actually, when I see read posts assuming and addressing forum readers as females, I kinda give a big smile. It's even funnier for me because my girlfriend whom we can't leave our house for months because of covid quarantine, is actually pretty bored of me talking about this drama . She didn't even give a chance to it.

If nothing else, this tv series is very original and bold. I, am kinda bored of watching western style(including Turkish ones) stories, that I can almost guess whatever will happen next or are simply full of empty melodrama. TKEM offers a different culture, interesting director choices, original story and acting. Also, I am a fan of fantasy genre. Nowadays, when it's sci-fi or fantasy it's served either with horror or much more frequently with some super-hero action. I think Korean way of handling fantasy genre is pretty much unique. Let me put it this way. I don't think it is possible to watch anything like a king with white horse that makes charges over modern day roads with a sword in hand. Even if you see something similar, it would be low-budget product with absurdity or comedy in it. This very high budget, well handled, beautifully shot series takes and I believe holds itself very seriously.

Looks like the writer wrote fairly tale / folk story than sci-fi that I have been theorizing. I will have to start watching this drama with different lens now.

Feel like just the people alone on this thread might've helped with the ratings on Netflix watching it multiple times.

@kboramint I see. I wonder what closing the door means,... do they then destroy the flute? It would be sad to do so bec it was supposed to be a gift. The problem is that Lee Rim misused it. I wonder what part that little boy is going to play when he says he has to restore the balance. 
 

This somewhat reminds me of Goblin where we see the problem but we don’t know how it’s going to get solved. We hoped that Goblin and his bride would have a happy ending and yet the only way to free him was for her to take the sword out which would result in his death. With TKEM, we hope they end up having a a future together and yet they belong to 2 different worlds and the only way to preserve them is to close the door that allows them to be together.

this place has actually saved me a lot of stress.  I thought I was the only crazy person looking at TKEM.  Knowing that their are others makes the 7 days tolerable. Now back to my 4th airing of episodes 11 & 12.

He finds her! And how can he not when he’s spend most of his life searching for her?! As if he were preparing all that time for this moment. And then he rescues her like the warrior king he is (being both a trained soldier and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces).

Honestly, with Tae Eul’s exciting life, Lee Gon is a supremely useful person to have around. It’s like having one’s personal guard tiger or something. A tiger that can fight like a trained assassin and owns an entire security service with access to all the surveillance cameras in the country.

Lee Gon will probably never be OK - the woman he loves is crying and bleeding, fighting to stay conscious and using every last bit of strength left in her to tell him how much she’s missed him. He came so very close to losing her. Tae Eul’s been kidnapped and hurt by his own family. It’s like his life is a series of neverending nightmares. Or as if all of his nightmares and greatest fears kept coming true - everyone he’s ever cared about is suffering for loving him.

They cling to each other for dear life and he’s both so terribly worried about her and achingly soft with her - as if she were impossibly precious and fragile and could disappear or be taken away from him at any moment: the way he protectively cradles her head as if he were trying to shield her from an entire world, the way he gently caresses her cheek with hands covered in the blood of men he killed for her,.. There is so much urgency, intensity and relief... and he’s being so fiercely protective of her.

And then she literally swoons in his arms and he carries her bridal-style like some fairy-tale princess he’s just rescued.

Maybe JTE will choose to to be with LG in his world. There's no issue with people living in other world peacefully like Lady Noh and SJ, except if they destroy the flute, JTE won't be able to visit her friends or family ever again from her world.

 

@briseis I wouldn't exactly call that swooning in his arms.  She probably fainted from exhaustion and as the doctor mentioned dehydration.

The way I squealed and screamed when I watched that neck kiss and that *winky face* bed scene hahahaha I swear this drama gives me more than I deserve!!

I swear that hug was everything, the way they molded in each others arms had him squelling like hell. that entire scene from Gon finding her to taking her to the place was the chef’s kiss; Especially that Gun part, he shot the remaining Two and threw it away far away from her so it does not haunt her, that was everything !!

Oh, Prime Minister, I had hopes for you that you wouldn't be completely evil but now I can hate you properly hahahaha And she got Yeong shot? Excuse me?? Thank goodness his hot majesty knows that you crossed worlds! 

Lady Noh is from the Republic? My god! This is awesome!!!

Not sure what the rules are anymore for those weird lightning scars but nor KSJ or TaeEul have it. And maybe neither does Yeong or EunSeop. The theory I had about the lightning on the universe travellers is 100% true.

 LAST BUT OF COURSE NOT THAT LEAST WAS THAT KISS, PLS; it was everything , now that we have only 4 episodes left, hopefully the ending will answers all our questions and at least gives us a decent ending where no main character dies and at least they are happy especially my OTP !!

This show is genius and I'm sad that we're getting closer to the ending.

I agree with you related with the korean taste about drama. The viewers itself mostly are middleaged women or early 30 something. Youngster are to busy to dating or work than watching drama live thus if you saw on the subway in korea, they were watching those drama in re-run.

And talking about naver, korean is all about that. Basically you rely your life on naver, that's show how important it is to them. They rarely or didn't use google since the information in Korean language is not enough compare to naver. Even the gmaps is not working properly coz the close the satelite due to north korea thus you use navermap.

If you guys watching weekend or family drama, mostly about makjang drama. The rating almost always 20 something. That is one of the reason i even not surprise that the othere drama contender havr a high soaring ratings. It was also happen the same in my country. Thus i din't watch tv at all since 2011 or something.

 

The other drama like arthdal chronicle also considered failure in Korea becouse it didn't match with korean taste as if the cloth is not beautiful that beautifule compare to other sageuk drama. Plus the timing is crash with SJK divorce scandal. And making new regulation that the actor or actrees cannot divorce during the drama airing. The rating itself floating between 5-7% coz of these.

Me myself think that the back and forth clue is not the problem since reply series does this kind of thing where we need to find clue here and there. But the differencies in is genre. Reply is light drama, comedy, family. And TKEM is taking more serious path and during my 18 years of watching k-dramas, it is rare to havr fantasy drama that crack the head.

I think the production team already consider this, thus they work with netflix so that international audience also can enjoy.

SBS unlike MBC or TvN where you can acces live through their website. Even the trailer, i need to wait until someone re-post it in the YT channel.
