‘Goblin’ Snags Another Record, Will It Surpass ‘Reply 1988’?

‘Goblin’ is virtually unstoppable!

The tvN Friday-Saturday hit drama ‘Goblin’, also known as ‘Guardian: The Lonely and Great God’, has just broken another record. The fantasy-romance drama recorded 14% viewership on 16 December according to TNmS.

When compared to the ratings of other tvN dramas of the same episodes, Goblin is by far the most successful drama. Signal recorded around 7% at the same episode, while Reply 1988 scored 9.6%.

Many fans are now curious to see whether the series will achieve the highest rating of Reply 1988, which was 18.4% at the last episode.

Guardian: The Lonely and Great God is a tvN short series of 16 episodes, starring Gong Yoo, Kim Go-eun, Lee Dong-wook, Yoo In-na, and Yook Sung-jae. It airs every Friday and Saturday, and can also be watched online on DramaFever and Viki.

The plot revolves around a 939 years old dokkaebi and his young bride – the only person capable of pulling out a ghost sword from the dokkaebi’s chest. The series started with incredibly high ratings which it has managed to double in a very short time.

This K-drama is literally slaying the ratings!

@chibimidori ET character actually deserved more acknowledgement than the flakes she constantly get for acting cute or childish (which we all know is just a facade to hide her dire state and also a silent cheer to herself.)
beside the photographic memories regarding numbers. i guess we should take note also of her ability to hand-copy the paragraphy of chinese words from KS's diary. writing chinese words is so unlike other's languages. because of the complicated strokes, esp what KS wrote are the traditional  fán tǐ zì ( 繁體字 ), for the character of ET, to be able to hand copied the whole page with such precision, even though we know the character of ET is ficitonal , yet we should say, by this ablity to copy the chinese texts, shown a few facts.
a. First. she is very determined, a girl of strong will. by trying to ask KS the word on his palm, she has almost done 90 percentage of the interpretation. but because chinese if unlike English, doing a word to word direct translation may NOT get her anyway near to decipher the whole passage. yet, we still see a strong undaunted spirit.

b.Secondly, she has been doing reserch on the ancient character of Kim Shin, the lack of infor in history regarding KS, does not discourage her, as well as her own inability to understand chinese.  to be able to copied with such neatiness, shown she might be good in linguistic, and is a meticulous person, a neat person. for those who are chinese but grew up breed in English Education, having chinese just been taught as a second language in school, copying just a few sentence. will find all the words starting to goes un-uniform, and untidy. it is either Writernim and Director over look this part in making ET being a amateur yet can write Chinese words beautifully. or jsut taht Writernim, and Director deliberately making her being a mutli talents person.

c. the Third point, is the most beautiful observation. i guess we all has this experience. when we seize hold of some 'secret' writing or passage of our 'high-school-first-love". we will make efforts, spare no thoughts, wasted no time, to try to 'investigate" and decipher what he wrote. in this manner, ET is truly acting as a 'fan-girl' or 'love-struck' secret admirer of KS, trying hard to secretly peep into his secret inner world. the more effort she throw into trying to interpret the chinese words, the more it shown she has walked straigth into his heart, or should i say he has occupied her heart. She may have started to realised her heart already given to him, But since he kept 'pushing' her away, and even denying "LOVE' as not found within those 3 presents. Deep is her disappointment, but in order not to burden him, with discovery of her love, she will chose to hid it. now i just hope KS can discovered how much she felt for him, or even to chanced upon her copied page. ... its time that both start discovering how important they are meant to each other.

Hey guys, this is my first post in this thread. Couldn't help myself gushing over this gem of a show which gets me giddy every-time i see it hehe.

The 5th episode started from what i find is the most beautiful and touching scene i have seen in quite a while in dramas. It will go down as one of my most favourite scenes of all times in any drama. The way the scene captured Eun tak’s innocent excitement and liveliness, her energetic smile which sends Kim Shin weak on his knees and makes him utterly smitten, the heart wrenching poetic monologue personifying him losing his heart to her…..it was spellbinding for me.

But what really got to me was that her smile which was as bright as the sun to him, took him back to the moment when he lost his life. It was as if the most happy and cherished memory reminding of his wretched life and that he has to end it. What is even more cruel is that it will be her doing it. He is scared that he’d become greedy….that he’d want to live longer. Interestingly, if she was given a choice  to live a life of eternity, she wouldn’t mind if it was with him. Although she said it without knowing the world out there, knowing it repercussion and with full naivety, his silent reaction to her enthusiasm was quite something.

I thought the above admission was one of the saddest scene of 5th episode. I was wrong. His stoic I love you was. Ack. A matter of factly I love you, not letting the sadness of his heart reflect on his face. So while Eun Tak misunderstands and keeps accusing him of things he doesn’t feel at all… he just let’s her do so, but looks at her so tenderly, sadness reflecting in his eyes...that eyes doesn’t move away from her one bit (ACK ONLY GONG YOO CAN DO THIS SORT OF KILLER PERFORMANCE)

It always makes me curious what Eun Tak feels….she is just 19, naive, innocent, childish. At that very moment when she thinks he hates her and she makes him sad (oh my the thought of it is so outrageous rofl), you just know she has little idea about love or even the idea of love. It’s interesting how she keeps on demanding to know from him whether he loves her/likes or not...or is always curious about it. I keep on wondering what does she expect of him emotionally? She want to be with him, dine with him….all because he is like her guardian angel, or is there something more.

That stoic confession of his would have naturally hurt her, as it did come out as though he was mocking her. She was entering a relationship with him with the misconception that it was going to be give and take between them….this when she didn’t even know his name, and didn’t even know whether she had the right to know it or not.

Thank God there are some light scenes in between tragic ones haha. I absolutely love it when the Reaper (HE ACTUALLY NAMED HIMSELF KIM WOO BIN. BWAHAHAHA I JUST CAN’T ROFL), Goblin and the Human are together. Eun Tak constantly fearing she is been taken away towards after world whenever he is around is just hilarious. I like it how the relationship changed to Reaper cheering on for Eun Tak, while she is bonding with Reaper folding laundry and choosing names. That leaves Kim Shin being jealous and declaring himself her boyfriend just out of the blue. And such a dork he is...he later contemplates whether to go back to clear the fact it was husband not boyfriend. Ha.

Can i take a moment to just appreciate how much this guy is smitten by her.Like hearing her footsteps to guess what she is upto, taking her to Qubec at any chance he gets, watching her adoringly as she goes about with her life cheerfully and innocently, and getting jealous over silliest of things. Haha is he 939 really?

I totally like how Reaper and Goblin bonded over time and got used to each other. They didn’t start off on the right note cause both were to stuck up in their and were used to their lonely lives. But a few salt shaker and knife fights later the got used to each other. It hilarious how the share girl problems as if they ain’t centuries old creature but 20 something dudes haha.The reaper especially….half the time he is so glum and clueless ha.There is this one conversation between them that just struck me…..the one in which they discuss about seeing God and envy humans that they eventually do get to see God, but they who face so much hardships and burden of their sins do not get to confront him or even know how he looks like to resent him. Kim Shin asked Eun Tak why is everything about her so sad. I think everything about these two is even sadder.

I am absolutely glad that the bromance has reached a point where the Reaper is freaked out when Eun Tak has finally made up her mind to pull out that sword out of Kim Shin. Actually my best bromance moment was when Reaper offered Goblin a hug *pffft*

I also loved how Eun Tak’s words and actions were soothing to Kim Shin’s wounds of the past. She comforts and consoles him, wipes his tears, eases his pain….and awww even teaches him how to pat tenderly. This inherent affection between them is so organic. It was heart wrenching to see him so moody and gloomy, caught between his desire to live with her and his agony of a long immortal life. It is always painful to see him ignore her or give her a cold shoulder, because you know he is doing this only to sort himself and make his resolve firm and not sway in her direction… you know that after walking past her, behind her back he begs her secretly to let him go and not hold him back. And yet, he comes around and back to her and starts delaying his last day on earth by one more day.

The kiss scene was really interesting. I am not usually a fan of such a kiss where one of them would be wide eyed. But this one just worked because of the situation haha. It was very smartly written. It was smart to make Eun Tak initiate the kiss. It was so true to her character. You just know she is capable of pulling something like that hahaha. Kissing the frog prince type outrageous ideas can only be up Eun Tak’s sleeves. It by and large worked for me also because of Gong Yoo and his expressions being so spot on….it went from confused to being taken aback to being taken off guard. The snow and the music worked other wonders. Out and out it totally did work for me, the kiss.

Can I just say...THIS IS THE DRAMA I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR ALL YEAR!!! I usually watch dramas for the male leads...(even at my age, I'm still boy crazy! Haha!).....but finally, FINALLY!!!....we get a heroine who is realistic, smart, and takes action. She is sweet, compassionate, and has an upbeat personality...but she's also not a pushover. She's not pulling out that sword for "free" and I love that she has conditions for the Goblin. The boyfriend confession scene in episode 5 when she is arguing with him is so funny! 900+ year old goblin with super powers and she isn't scared of him one bit. 

I'm so happy that we get a complex male character like Goblin and we have an equally complex female character who just baffles him. 

Easily the best drama of 2016..and its only on episode 6!!! It'll still be running episodes in 2017 and I'm sure it'll be my favorite drama in 2017 as well!

By the way guys, based on preview of episode 7, I have a feeling, is that our 939 years old (oops sorry, its 938 lol) Goblin's first time watching a movie in a movie theater? Lol. Gongyoo is so epic. Just a thought here - maybe ET can't grab the sword because she is not fully aware of the consequences. KS has not been honest with her in what pulling the sword means so it's as if KS has not really given ET the chance to choose for herself whether to pull the sword out or not whilst fully knowing what it means.

 

Another theory might be that ET couldn't pull out the sword because KS still has some unfinished business. When he told his servant to burn the picture of the queen, he said he hadn't found the people he feels he owes a debt to. 

 

There is definitely depth to this drama and part of the reason why I am so hooked on Goblin is because you just never know how things are going to play out. I love that at the center of it all is certainly a serious, melancholy tone that reminds us that KS became a Goblin as a punishment and meeting his bride would be both painful and joyful for him. But the drama surrounds it with lots of moments of cuteness, hilarious bromance, and innocence that just plays with our emotions so wonderfully well. I must say this is the first drama I've watched where I am honestly rooting for all parties involved to have a happy ending.

Let's not forget the emotional maturity of the Goblin too. Where ET is more mature than her actual age, Shin is very much less mature than his 939 years of age. The way he needles her comes across as more of a teenager than any of ET's actions. Not to mention his interactions with the Reaper.

As for the Reaper and Sunny, I agree that Sunny is more likely the king though my suspicions come from much less evidence. When the Reaper and Shin are talking about Shin looking for the king's reincarnation, someone asks why he assumes that the reincarnation must be a male. That struck me as an odd but interesting tidbit at first but the more I think about it, the more sense it makes that Sunny would be the king.

Yes, I agree with you about the age thing. He’s 939 years old (or 938 because he insists that he has an early birthday) but he acts like a teenager. But I shouldn’t be criticizing Shin’s juvenile tendencies when I'm guilty myself of tweaking poor @CamelKnight's nose out of joint for his age when I’m practically Methuselah myself.

Did you get that joke about being 938? Korean age always trips me up so I had to think this through and do the math. People born in between February 1077 and February 1078 would have the same age because of the lunar calendar. They’d be 939 years old. 

But he argues that he was born in early 1078 (probably January or February 1078) so he’s technically only 938 years old. 

What amuses me here is his puny attempt to shave off months!! -- seriously, we’re just talking about months here – just so he’ll be closer in age to ET.

Anyway, here’s more trivia to atone for sharing that bit about Justin Beiber’s underpants.

In 1077, there was a Holy Roman Emperor named Henry IV, of modern-day Germany, who was threatened to be excommunicated by Pope Gregory VII. Excommunication isn’t treated seriously by Catholics nowadays but in that age, this excommunication could have caused a rift in the Western World. Why? Because the German king and the Roman pope were supposed to share power. Henry IV was the military defender of the Holy Roman Empire -- like Shin was the general of the army – but his spiritual LEADER and the spiritual leader of the HOLY ROMAN Empire was the Roman pope – like the Shin’s King was the head of the nation.   

Do you see the historical similarities? 

Because he was threatened with excommunication, Henry IV went to the Pope to ask for forgiveness. In the dead of winter, he traversed Germany, crossed the Alps and went to the castle in Canossa, Italy, where the Pope was hibernating. According to legends, Henry walked barefoot and wore a thin garment as penance, in the bitter cold. However, upon arrival at Canossa, he discovered that the Pope had ordered the castle gates closed. (Just like the Shin discovered that gates were barred from him.)

So Henry knelt in the snow and stayed outside for three days while a blizzard was raging around him. Finally, the Pope had no option but to relent and open the door to let him in. 

To “walk to Canossa” means to apologize, to swallow one’s pride, and to endure humiliation and suffering.  At one level, it can be seen as an “apology tour”.  But on another level, it can also be seen as showing restraint and humility for the greater good. You see, Henry’s actions ACTUALLY weakened Gregory’s papacy (he was later exiled) and strengthened his own political leadership (he was crowned).  He had suffered temporary humiliation but gained historical greatness. His walk to Canossa is considered a diplomatic success. 

Now, why am I sharing this trivia – and boring people to death? 

Because 1) we try to elevate the discussion with more cultural and historical perspectives, lol. “Think outside the usual kdrama box,” and 

2) the actions of Henry IV could have been emulated by Shin. 

What if he did stop at the gates? What if he didn’t walk forward as his sister the queen told him? What if he had prostrated himself and humbled himself to the king? Could he have achieved greatness later on, too? Shin could have conceded the battle for that day, and won the war in the long run.  He wouldn’t have been just a footnote in history with only a few entry lines in the internet. Interesting, right?  I find it fascinating that Shin was born after the Walk to Canossa and everything that happened to him was the reverse of Henry IV’s actions.

I’m sorry I didn’t respond to your message sooner.  I usually try to answer everybody in order so you won’t think I’m only selecting certain posters and snubbing others, but I had to put some method to my madness. 

I’m glad you agree that it’s possible that Sunny is the King, too.  Not a lot of people will share this view, but that’s okay. As long as a dissenting minority opinion is allowed to be given voice in an open forum, I don’t mind one way or another how the scriptwriter will use their secret identities to advance her plot. It’s her story; her prerogative. But that’s also the hidden beauty of watching the story unfold on our laptop, isn’t it? If we don’t like the direction of the drama, we can always go take a hike. 

But I do need to be fair and open-minded because the plot is evolving. I went over their scenes again to look for points that I might have missed. While I previously gave 6 points to Team Reaper-is-Queen, I’m giving Team Sunny-is-Queen two points, and adding three more points to Team Reaper. My memory retrieval isn’t as good as before so I need to keep a scoreboard to help me remember.  @phikylremember my fascination with scoreboards? 

 

Team Sunny-is-Queen. 

1. She's female. Although as people pointed out, the Reaper pointed out himself gender shouldn't be presumed as static in reincarnations. 

2. The lapel pin. The Reaper wears a lapel pin on his black suit uniform.  It’s the chess symbol for the King. ♔ (I tried to insert the unicode here. Hope you can see it.) It’s possible that the costume director pinned the King’s crown on the Reaper’s suit to signal that he IS the king. It’s like ET’s name tag for the chicken store. If he’s the King then Sunny is the Queen. However, there’s a counter-argument. 

Team Reaper-is-Queen.

...7. The lapel pin. It’s also possible that the costume director pinned the King’s crown NOT to designate the identity of the king but to show the wearer’s ALLEGIANCE to the king. For instance, American politicians wear a flag pin, not because they’re flag-bearers, but to show patriotism (whether or not it’s real is debatable, however....) Military personnel wear a lapel pin to show their branch of affiliation. And the British wear a poppy on Remembrance Day to remember the veterans and those soldiers who died in WWI. So, the king's crown lapel pin will indicate that the Reaper is NOT the king. (Confusing, no?)

8. His last name is the same as Shin’s. KIM. When he signed off on the Reapers' paperwork, he wrote "Kim" according to the kdrama sub. It’s possible that this is a generic name for all reapers. But it’s also likely that it’s some sort of cosmic joke from the kdrama gods. Like a twisted “I’m really your long-lost sibling” trope. Also, when he introduced himself as Kim Woo Bin to Sunny. 

9. The frown. At 15:14 min in Episode 6, there was a montage of the memories of Shin. I heard that people were wondering why that particular image of Sunny was chosen.  The look on the King’s face as he was glaring down at Shin the warrior on bended knees was matched with Sunny’s look as she was staring down at the Reaper’s bent head. Did you see that, too?

Anyway, I'll keep on looking for hints for either one and perhaps @phikyl can keep score. 

As for our Goblin going commando style…hahahaha. Although we can certainly indulge in crazy fantasies, I’ve heard it said that going commando can be rough on those crown jewels unless you're wearing silk or cotton. Something about the seams getting in the way. Tight jeans especially can chafe the sensitive skin.

And those suit pants made of wool? Forget about those! He’ll need to send those out for dry-cleaning after just one wearing or wear stinky pants the next time. When I consider all the logistics, I think it’s actually more trouble to go commando than not.  

But don’t you just love how house-trained the Reaper is? The only problem with him is he's a vegetarian, and most girls I know are like ET, they're carnivores.
