Some beautiful thoughts and great observations at halfway point of this magical series.  Keep them coming, love reading them!

 

Spoiler alert:
Thank our lucky prayers, it turned out to be one of the most naturally romantic kisses we have had in a while in Kdrama land.  Totally swoon-worthy.  I actually appreciate it is not so much in your face (give them time to learn/progress lol!).  It was a tentative and shy sweet first kiss that felt right and natural for the characters and where they are in the relationship.  (Plus they went for seconds/thirds, so it wasn't like cheating! )

 

I am glad 'Encounters' kept up with the original promise and kept up with the plot pace that kept true to the characters whilst avoiding obvious pitfalls.   I simply love the CSH character growth, that somehow in the face of overwhelming ridiculous hurdles, remained principled, dignified, eventually brave to face up her feelings that lead to actions.  It was KJH who has given her the courage and enforced her confidence to fight, but she still respects his feeling enough to let him stay true to who he is, to abide by his decisions.   She also confronted with the sneaky hotel manager through decisive reasoning rather than bully/blackmail him into anything.  I am sure it pains her to have the power but still feels helpless because she respects others to come to their own decisions.   It really separates her from the likes of her mother and mother in law, that has the power and completely abuse and enforce them for self-interests.  Again, the relationship dynamic remains balanced and their character growth feels natural, as their rise above the hurdles placed upon them, maturely, true to their characters.   Like drama without the obvious theatrics, and I really appreciate the thoughts and careful direction behind them.   

 

As some posters have already cleverly pointed out, this drama is full of metaphors, use of heightened symbols or semiotics in the established fantasy genre.  This week's theme is all about the big 'reveal/reflect' beneath the surface. Where every character has finally revealed themselves at this point of who they are, including the fiancé , the destiny DateApp couple..  Cutest bearded cupid ever who is incapable of masking,  CSH's dad is squarely in her corner etc..   The use of through a looking glass (camera that focuses and frames the person even more clearly,  The most precious possession he has), mirrors that reflect in her office, masquerade masks that hides and reveals, masked characters (ice Queen, Tinman from wizard of Oz/ knight - who is known to be brave, sensitivity to their friends, who is looking for a heart) can bring out the romanticism for the most poetic psychoanalysis. 

 

So far, this drama is the perfect concoction of Xmas Winter desserts: the delicacy of a souffle, the tanginess, and loveliness of winter berries, the creamy center of sweet kisses of pure joy, with slight bitterness and addictiveness of coffee and brandy in between.  Repeat and Rinse?   Hope we get a glorious memorable ending that it deserves, with a cherry on top.

 

Big creds to the SHK and PBG, they are settling into their roles nicely.. and ever so gorgeously.  A good hair day indeed.  Love the epilogue, the difference between KJH and the former husband.  One see/think on what they want to see - he is his mother's child after all.   One act based on what they instinctively knows based on their sensibility to think beyond themselves and put others first.

I Think i can endure the longing of next episode, with this beautiful episode..

 

Kudos to the PD,DOP, Editor that executed scene after scene in such a cinematic editing. The romantic and melancholy feeling linger so long, it made me cry. 

Honestly, i love how they made the kissing scene feels so sad.. it was 'i miss you desperately' kisses. The way the they choose to zoom out, and show the back of JH head to me are perfect. Anyone hear the sound of JH smooch at the end of their kiss?? (I use headphone)

OT Trivia

 

PBG's former leading lady Kim Yoo Jung played baby Hwang Jin Yi, in the SHK movie years ago.    So it is inevitable he progress to the adult version eventually...

 

The kid on the bottom right who played Hwang Jin Yi's love interest as a child, even looks a bit like kid Park Bo Gum.

This drama strikes me as a contemporary fairytale complete with wicked stepmothers (who are technically mother and mother-in-law).

 

What I'm finding charming about the story is that except for the wicket stepmothers, everyone behaves as decent human being doing thing that in other dramas could be construed as being against their best interests. 

 

The fact that Hey-In is doing what's best for Jin-Hyeok  instead of fanning her hopes that she could be his girl is surprising sane.  She is not supporting Jin-Hyeok's relationship with Soo-Hyun, she is supporting him.

The same can be said about Woo-Seok.  He is not supporting Soo-Hyun and Jin-Hyeok, but he is supporting Soo-Hyun, even if that means he ends up without her.

Funny enough his scene was with the baby HwangJinyi in the film played by Kim Yoo Jung (who grew up to be his lead in 'love in the moonlight'), and his role was the kid version of Hwang Jin Yi's love played by  Yu Ji Tae to SHK's adult Hwang Jin Yi.

Song Hye Kyo And Park Bo Gum’s 1st Kiss Boosts “Encounter” Ratings; “The Last Empress” Sets New Personal Viewership Record

Both tvN’s “Encounter” and SBS’s “The Last Empress” continue to gain steam—and new viewers!

According to Nielsen Korea, the December 20 episode of “Encounter”—which featured Song Hye Kyo and Park Bo Gum’s very first kiss—enjoyed an increase in viewership ratings from its previous broadcasts. The episode scored average ratings of 9.2 percent and a peak of 10 percent nationwide, taking first place in its time slot for the evening.

“Encounter” also continued to perform well with the key demographic of viewers ages 20 to 49, with whom it scored an average of 4.7 percent and a peak of 5.2 percent for the night.

Meanwhile, the December 20 episode of “The Last Empress” (which airs in a slightly different time slot) achieved its highest viewership ratings yet. The broadcast scored average nationwide ratings of 11.4 percent during its first half and 14.6 percent during its second, breaking its previous viewership record of 14 percent. The episode also reached a peak of 18.6 percent in the Seoul metropolitan area.

Not only was “The Last Empress” the most-watched drama of the evening overall, but it also took first place for the night among the key demographic of viewers ages 20 to 49, scoring average ratings of 4.4 percent and 6.3 percent for its two parts.

MBC’s “Children of Nobody” scored average nationwide ratings of 3.6 percent and 4.7 percent for its two parts, while KBS 2TV’s “Feel Good to Die” scored an average viewership of 2.2 percent for the night.

I can only imagine their year-end 2018 awards (if TVn has any).. Lee Byung-Hun from Mr. Sunshine, Hyun Bin from Memories of Alhambra and then we have SHK from this drama  

 

Awkward AF 

 

Just finished watching it with eng subs. SHK nailed that ending! Tears in her eyes while smiling or kissing? Smiling while crying? Thats dang hard to do, mind you. I tried smiling while I was crying and it turned more like a grimace 

 

@enigmatic_zephy i think she had to do that drama. People viewed her as just being “cutesy” and she hated that typecasting. In WW, she showed a different gutsy side of her. I enjoyed that drama eventhough I mostly didnt like Jung Ji-Oh’s character.

Just finished the subbed...that ending was just perfect... no lines... just those eyes talking... but you can feel the depth of their feelings to one another...! 

 

That epilogue is show and proves how much they knew CSH. One is sooo superficial... one is so intense that he knows what type of mask she will like..! Daebak...!  

 

Kudos to the production staff!!!
