Why Her?: Episodes 1-2 (First Impressions)

by DaebakGrits

WhyHer1-2_00.jpg

Yet another legal drama has dropped in dramaland, but this one focuses on a powerful female lawyer who has clawed her way to the top of a prestigious law firm. Her cutthroat approach hasn’t earned her many friends, so when an incident tarnishes her polished reputation, a lot of people are happy to see her demoted to an adjunct law professor while she repairs her public image.

EPISODES 1-2 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

I’ve watched my fair share of legal dramas recently, and even though I feel a bit burned out on the genre, I decided to watch this one for one reason, and one reason only: Hwang In-yub. Ever since he rocketed into fame following his screen-stealing role as the second lead in True Beauty, he has been on my radar as someone to watch — and crush on. While he may be the leading man in this drama, there’s nary a sign of In-yub until the last fifteen minutes of Episode 1.

Instead, the story first takes its time introducing our leading lady OH SOO-JAE (Seo Hyun-jin). She’s cutthroat, but despite being the highest-earning lawyer at the prestigious TK Law Firm, she has more enemies than allies. A lot (well, most) of the animosity stems from good ol’ fashioned sexism — because women with ambition who don’t smile on command are “RickRoll'D.” She’s up for a promotion as managing partner of the law firm, and as a group of (all) men weigh the candidates’ qualifications, Soo-jae’s gender is seen as a negative. It would be far too progressive of them to have a female managing partner.

Soo-jae also “came from nothing” and was merely a high school graduate — someone who passed the Korean bar exam without attending law school. (Note: this practice was eliminated in 2017, and now all future South Korean lawyers must attend law school.) And sure enough, in a flashback to her early days at TK Law Firm, we see a meeker version of Soo-jae handing out papers at a meeting and then being told to leave the conference room because she wasn’t qualified to sit at the big boy table.

Soo-jae’s biggest competitor for the managing partner position is MIN YOUNG-BAE (Kim Sun-hyuk). His ineptitude is palpable, but his Y-chromosome makes him 99.999% more likely to get the position. And yet, that .001% worries him, so he tries to bribe Soo-jae’s right-hand woman, associate lawyer SONG MI-RIM (Lee Joo-woo), into putting in a good word for him when she’s called in to give her opinion on Soo-jae’s qualifications for the position. Soo-jae, however, plays dirtier and eliminates Young-bae as a contender entirely.

One of their firm’s biggest clients is Chairman HAN SUNG-BEOM (Lee Kyung-young playing another corrupt rich guy). His company, Hansu Group, is selling off its subsidiary Hansu Bio Chemical, which is run by Sung-beom’s nephew HAN GI-TAK (Jeon Jae-hong). Soo-jae and Young-bae were placed in charge of handling Hansu Bio’s acquisition, but Young-bae took bribes from two of the three potential buyers and tried to sway Gi-tak away from selling Hansu Bio to SP Partners, despite them being the strongest buyer.

Soo-jae has their boss CHOI TAE-KOOK (Heo Jun-ho) on the phone when she exposes Young-bae’s backdoor dealings, and he’s promptly dropped from the acquisition case. But she doesn’t fully secure the managing director position for herself until she has her team swoop in and raid Gi-tak’s office for the files that he’s dodgily avoided handing over — a sure sign that he and Sung-beom are up to something illegal. Now that she’s in possession of these documents, Tae-kook has no other option but to promote her and try to keep her on a short leash.

I loved the first two episodes.

I don't think we know how old each character is supposed to be but I am guessing mid-20s for the ML, and early-30s for FL.

The girl who killed herself was def murdered and then was dropped at just the right time.

The show seems to have a lot of moving parts which could make it great or fall apart depending on how the writers plot it all out. I am excited for this show and hope it just keeps getting better.

4 Things We Loved & 1 Thing We Hated About The Premiere Episodes Of “Why Her?”

“Why Her?” is the new SBS mystery romance starring Seo Hyun Jin, Hwang In Yeop, and Bae In Hyuk. The teasers and posters hinted at a series that would be very dark and mysterious. Expectations were set incredibly high as Seo Hyun Jin was cast as the female lead. Seo Hyun Jin stars as Oh Soo Jae, a lawyer who is on her way to becoming a top attorney. She is willing to take down anyone in her path in order to make sure she is successful. Hwang In Yeop stars as a university student who has past connections with Soo Jae and develops a fondness for her. Curious to see what we thought of the series so far? Keep reading to find out!

Trigger warning: There are scenes of suicide and sexual assault in the first two episodes.

1. LOVED: Seo Hyun Jin’s acting

Seo Hyun Jin has proven time and time again that she’s able to rise to the occasion when it comes to her roles. If you look at her past works including “Another Oh Hae Young” and “Dr. Romantic,” we got very believable performances, all of which have brought her to where she is today. Her star power is very evident, and we really didn’t get anything less than perfect in her role as Oh Soo Jae.

seo-hyun-jin.jpeg

Seo Hyun Jin as Oh Soo Jae is very cold, judgmental, and manipulative. She is willing to do anything and everything to try to become a partner at the law firm she works at, and she’s really not likable. She started as an intern, often ridiculed and made fun of by other lawyers. And her background was not as established as the others, which made her an easy target for many. Fast forward several years, and Oh Soo Jae is a partner at the firm. She has caught potential partners in their lies and has risen to the top, all as a result of finding their weaknesses. We don’t know how she ended up being so heartless, but with the flashbacks, it’ll eventually be uncovered.

Aside from the fact that her character is not one we can sympathize with from the start, we have to commend Seo Hyun Jin’s ability to play this role so flawlessly. Her bone-chilling, cold gazes and degrading laughs all show that she is completely nailing this role. It’s hard to see if her character will be able to redeem herself and become a female lead who is worthy of love, but we shall see where it goes.

2. LOVED: Hwang In Yeop in a lead role

hwang-in-yeop-why-her-768x768.jpeg

Hwang In Yeop plays Gong Chan, a freshman at Seojoong Law School. In episode 2, we learn that Gong Chan had met Soo Jae when she was his lawyer for a case where he was wrongfully convicted. He becomes a law student to keep a promise he made with her when he was convicted.

Hwang In Yeop has been busy since last appearing in “True Beauty,” filming for two K-dramas which both happened to air within the past month. His fans from all over the world were waiting for his return to the small screen, and this double header was the perfect gift. Gong Chan is like a bright sunny day. He’s already got puppy dog eyes for Oh Soo Jae, and it’s a look that fans can never get enough of. His very direct heart for Soo Jae almost helped with the dark and depressing tone of the first episode. Although it’s still early in the series, his character is already very much lovable; I’m looking forward to seeing his love line with Seo Hyun Jin progress!

3. LOVED: Bae In Hyuk

Spoiler

bae-in-hyuk-768x768.jpeg

We really weren’t prepared for Bae In Hyuk to end up being the son of Choi Tae Guk (Heo Joon Ho). There’s something about seeing Bae In Hyuk in bad boy roles that really makes him ooze charisma and charm. His role in “My Roommate Is a Gumiho” was similar and very memorable, which is why this particular role is exceeding expectations already.

It will be interesting to see how his connection with Oh Soo Jae will develop as the series progresses. If there is a love triangle looming on the horizon, we better prepare to have our hearts broken for him. He’s done the second lead syndrome justice in the past, so he will surely nail it this time around!

4. HATED: Choon Poong being a coward

When Na Se Ryun (Nam Ji Hyun) gets sexually assaulted by Professor Seo, Nam Choon Poong (Lee Jin Hyuk) is a prime witness to what happened. He is the only one that can clear her name and prove that Professor Seo is guilty. Nam Choon Poong initially doesn’t want to tell the truth about what he saw because of potentially getting expelled from the school. It was incredibly frustrating, and it makes you think about how relatable this scene could be for many.

Spoiler

why-her-768x353.png

why-her-1-768x316.png

To make things worse, Oh Soo Jae tells Se Ryun to let it go and apologize to Professor Seo, which is ridiculous. It was a good thing that Chan was able to overhear this conversation and put Oh Soo Jae in her place, even a little bit.

The case was slightly redeemed when Oh Soo Jae provided video evidence of herself also getting sexually assaulted by Professor Seo, but it was still mind-boggling how he wasn’t arrested or that it wasn’t more of a public issue. It could be addressed later on in future episodes, so there is still hope that he will see jail time. Justice be served!

5. LOVED: The power of love breaking down walls

It’s a bit corny, but it’s definitely a theme in the series that I’m here for. From the moment Hwang In Yeop comes into the storyline, we are greeted with a wave of warmth. Up until this point, the storyline is despairingly dark without having any characters to root for. The tone changes completely once Oh Soo Jae starts teaching at the law school. Gong Chan is shown to be the knight in shining armor who is willing to do anything to protect Oh Soo Jae and be there for her. We can already see her walls breaking down a bit when Gong Chan confesses to her while holding her hand.

Spoiler

She’s obviously taken aback. She may even be liking it. Can’t wait to see this love story progress!

hai everyone. :D never before have I seen such a meaningful drama. this is about all that we aspire to be, the self-discovery we yearn for and the fear we let hold us back. it's start with Soo Jae helps a future presidential candidate get out of a sticky situation. her real talent is displayed in the courtroom as she defends a biochemical company being sued for causing a child’s lung disease. the child in question never grew up in the supposed polluted neighborhood and is adopted. the parents used the child to get a payout. aside that, Soo Jae climb to the top continues as the law firm's president and other head figures decide on the firm's new chief executive officer. a very thought provoking scenes, the male lawyers have turned against Soo Jae with envy. she has shown her cold demeanor and sharp way of speaking. the only available textual evidence is confessions taken during the hearing. keeping things interesting this time around, the second episode focuses on Soo Jae brings the filled students back, Gong Chan and Yoon Sang who were the only people who stayed before the announcement and were surprised when their classmates returned,  believed in Se Ryeon and formed an alliance to prove her innocence. despite carrying the burdens of a painful past, Gong Chan's warm heart remains strong, especially as his affection for Soo Jae grows.  and to top it all off, Gong Chan ended up confessing his feelings for Soo Jae. he holds eye contact with her for longer than three seconds. :D loved the chemistry between lead actors and also all the supporting actors really great. stay tuned for more on this breaking story.

Seo Hyun Jin And Hwang In Yeop Experience Subtle But Meaningful Changes In Their Relationship In “Why Her?”

dummy.jpeg?s=900x600&e=t

Jun 9, 2022

SBS’s “Why Her?” has shared new stills from its upcoming episode!

“Why Her?” is a new mystery romance drama starring Seo Hyun Jin as the titular Oh Soo Jae, a coldhearted lawyer who has grown empty after only chasing success, and Hwang In Yeop as law student Gong Chan, who would do anything to protect her.

Spoilers

Previously, Oh Soo Jae was pushed out of her throne at TK Law Firm and ended up at Seojung University Law School as a professor. There, she started to get entangled with Gong Chan, whose name used to be Kim Dong Gu. She didn’t recognize him as the teen boy she had once represented in court, but he knew who she was right away. Hence, he started to play her knight-in-shining armor, and towards the end of the episode, he took her hand and candidly told her that he liked her.

Newly released stills tease the small but crucial changes in Oh Soo Jae and Gong Chan’s relationship. In one photo, Gong Chan holds out his umbrella for Oh Soo Jae, who has been stranded by the sudden rain. She looks taken aback by his sudden appearance, and there’s also a hint of awkwardness on her face.

More photos capture their deep, meaningful eye contact. The way Gong Chan encloses the distance between them makes the hearts of Oh Soo Jae and the viewers flutter. Why did Gong Chan visit Oh Soo Jae in her office, and how will she react to the way things are rapidly progressing between them?

The drama’s producers commented, “The story of Oh Sop Jae falling into a deeper abyss and Gongchan, the ‘savior’ who reaches out to her, will officially unfold. Please keep an eye on the changes in their relationship.”

The next episode of “Why Her?” will air on June 10 at 10 p.m. KST.

Yup. I'd kiss Gong Chan too if I had someone who offered me an umbrella, a meal and support ha.

Though I wonder does she really not know his identity LoL? Well she has a lot of other things goin' on that need priority so..

Yikes. Are those people really her family?! Sheesh. Her mom and brothers only see Soo Jae as their golden goose.

I suspect her boss could be behind So Young's death but that other ahjusshi that's dealing with TK Law Firm could also be the culprit.

On the previous episode, Park So Young‘s (Hong Ji Yoon’s) death came to the surface again. I'm smitten with this drama. The editing is low key annoying in some scenes, the story is still shaky and I'm not too confident about it tbh, but there's enough in there to keep me watching.

I saw some things in episode 3 that had me wondering... Is our Soo Jae a functional/undercover alcoholic? Around 51 minutes in, when Gong Chan comes to her work office, she is standing at a cabinet.

Screenshot-20220611-134247-Chrome.jpg

There's a bottle there that looks like a wine bottle... That's what I'm thinking, unless its one of those bottles of syrup found in coffee houses.

Smart-Select-20220611-134317-Chrome.jpg

She puts the bottle back in the cabinet, but whatever the bottle contains, she's poured some of its contents into the travelling mug.

Spoiler

Screenshot-20220611-134350-Chrome.jpg

She keeps that mug near her for the rest of that brilliant scene. I am 97.365% sure that was alcohol in there. Plus, why did they keep the focus on the mug?

Spoiler

Smart-Select-20220611-134509-Chrome.jpg

We also see Soo Jae getting interested in Gong Chan in real-time. The arrogant and incompetent son of our villain comes to her office and pushes Gong Chan with the door as he walks in. When Ju Wan asks him if he is from the lowly Legal Clinic he turns around and puts his hands in his pocket and in that moment, I knew we were going to see pepper!!! Gong Chan hands it to this son of the devil, nay, undresses this fellow and gives him a verbal spanking on his bottom, but Soo Jae's reaction to their convo is what caught my attention.

GC: "Unless you want to be friends, I don't want to tell you."

Soo Jae looks at him like, Damn!! (And what's up with that product placement?:D)

Screenshot-20220611-134608-Chrome.jpg

GC: "TK is a firm where everyone dreamed of working. So I had high hopes."

Soo Jae smiles...

GC: "It makes me concerned about my professor's mental wellbeing for having to put up with a jerk like you."

Soo Jae's eyebrow goes up. OMO! Where did this dude get the balls to speak like this?

GC takes his leave and SJ looks pointedly at him, he has definitely caught her attention!!

if someone can make gifs of her reaction in those moments, I would be happy.

Spoiler

Screenshot-20220611-134726-Chrome.jpg

While I don't think she's the guarded heroine with walls around her heart, a guy who cuts right through the bull and shows his heart has shaken her heart too. He watches her, focuses only on her, and notices her worry and concern, and that moves her. By the time Gong Chan gives her his lecture/speech/"Think what you want to think, I like you" confession, it is game over for Soo Jae. This relationship has unfolded very quickly, but I am onboard with this romance! Then Dude seats her on the table, sweeps the glass shards and sees the shard on her foot and I was infatuated!! Reminds me of a discussion on the Secret Love Affair thread where someone said that a Korean friend of hers accepted the advances of a younger guy when she saw him arrange her shoes at the doorstep. Small touching gestures would have me swooning too!!

However, I will need Hwang In Yeop to find a new hairstyle. It's a no from me with that style.

Gong Chan is so so so adorable! His heart is worth USD 70m indeed LoL. Apart from him though, all the men on "Why Her?" are just plain scum and trash.

Soo Jae must have a heart of steel as she has to put up with so much crap and with no one to trust including that Baek guy tsk. tsk. tsk.

Who is that girl Eun Seo?? And her boss Chairman Choi is like the devil himself gettin' into these seedy deals ugh. Men.

In next ep. Gong Chan gets to save his beloved crush eheheh and maybe spend more time in caring for her WooHoo~ Soo Jae let slip that she's single ahahah! I want my own Gong Chan too..
