SBS’s “Why Her?” has revealed a new behind-the-scenes look at the drama!

“Why Her?” is a mystery romance drama starring Seo Hyun Jin as Oh Soo Jae, a cold-hearted lawyer who has grown empty after only chasing success, and Hwang In Yeop as law student Gong Chan, who would do anything to protect her. Bae In Hyuk plays Choi Yoon Sang, the lonely second son of Choi Tae Guk (Heo Joon Ho), the chairman of Oh Soo Jae’s law firm.

The making-of video shows Seo Hyun Jin and Hwang In Yeop having fun with their co-stars. Seo Hyun Jin especially gets absorbed in the arcade games, and she can’t control her excitement as she plays with Jo Dal Hwan and Lee Gyu Sung during break time. Hwang In Yeop also joins, and Seo Hyun Jin stares at him in awe as he deftly uses the joystick. It’s almost as if they’ve forgotten about the drama, and they’re not afraid to be themselves as they compete against each other.

why-her-2.jpg

Next, Seo Hyun Jin and Hwang In Yeop travel to Gangwon Province to film sweet scenes. The two get in their positions for the part where he gives her a peck on the lips. Hwang In Yeop, who is much taller than Seo Hyun Jin, tries to be closer to her eye level. Seo Hyun Jin jokes, “He’s lowering his height. Please give us a moment.” The wind starts blowing before they start filming, and Hwang In Yeop looks at a staff member and jokes, “Can you decrease the wind speed?” Seo Hyun Jin doesn’t even look at him as she retorts, “Who are you even talking to?”

The two actors professionally shoot the romantic moments, and they immerse into the affectionate mood as they exchange heart-fluttering kisses. However, when they’re on break, they joke and laugh about various things. Hwang In Yeop finds a bug on his hand and shows it to Seo Hyun Jin who jumps with a frightened look on her face. Hwang In Yeop wonders, “When did it get on me?” Seo Hyun Jin suddenly grows serious as she asks him, “What if it was crawling on your hand during [the kiss] scene?” They lock eyes and grow pensive for a few seconds but soon burst into laughter. Seo Hyun Jin good-naturedly tells the director, “If it’s there, please take care of it with CG.”

Hwang In Yeop And Seo Hyun Jin Share An Emotional Exchange In The Rain In “Why Her?”

SBS’s “Why Her?” shared new previews of the upcoming episode!

“Why Her?” is a mystery romance drama starring Seo Hyun Jin as Oh Soo Jae, a cold-hearted lawyer who has grown empty after only chasing success, and Hwang In Yeop as law student Gong Chan who would do anything to protect

Spoilers

Previously, Oh Soo Jae finally found out about Gong Chan’s true identity after seeing his past record of being wrongfully accused of the murder of his stepsister. Oh Soo Jae could not hide her shock to find out that Gong Chan is the same person as Kim Dong Gu (Yu Gene Woo), the person she defended in the past as a lawyer.

The newly released stills capture Gong Chan and Director Baek Jin Ki (Kim Chang Wan) running into each other at a charnel house. After someone’s remains were discovered at a construction site, Gong Chan thought of his stepsister Jeon Na Jung (Hwang Ji Ah), and he set out to visit the charnel house where her remains lie. However, Gong Chan appears shocked to unexpectedly run into Baek Jin Ki there, raising questions about the link between them.

The stills also reveal the confrontation between Gong Chan and Noh Byung Chool (Kim Han Joon) at the visiting room in prison. Noh Byung Chool is the person who confessed that he had murdered and abandoned Jeon Na Jung at sea after Kim Dong Gu was wrongly accused. The two who are complicatedly intertwined will have a tense confrontation. Gong Chan interrogates Noh Byung Chool with a gaze full of sadness and rage, while Noh Byung Chool responds with a crafty smile.

Furthermore, more photos preview Oh Soo Jae and Gong Chan’s meeting. Gong Chan sits in the pouring rain, head bowed in self-blame. Oh Soo Jae’s cold and dry expression and Gong Chan’s mournful and pitiful gaze hint at a change in atmosphere, making the distance between them seem far despite being under the same umbrella.

The truth that wasn’t revealed in the past will also start to be unveiled.”

The next episode of “Why Her?” will air on July 8 at 10 p.m. KST.

5 Shocking Secrets That Come To Light In Episodes 9-10 Of “Why Her?”

With Oh Soo Jae (Seo Hyun Jin) temporarily in the clear, “Why Her?” returns this week with a more contemplative pair of episodes as the battleground shifts to accommodating changing alliances, new players, and an ever-increasing trove of secrets. Chairman Choi Tae Guk (Heo Joon Ho) takes a slight backseat as the shady chaebols and assemblymen he supports begin fighting amongst each other, and Soo Jae gets to spend some well-deserved time on romance. Yet, doom continues to weigh heavy in the air, and as secrets start to spill out, no one will be left unscathed.

Here are the five most shocking secrets from this week’s episodes!

Warning: spoilers for episodes 9-10 below.

1. Chairman Choi has a weakness

Choi Tae Guk seems almost invincible at times. He has one of the country’s most powerful chaebols in his pocket and a soon-to-be President sitting there as well. It’s a wonder then why Choi Tae Guk has never sought the spotlight himself. He seems content to sit within his law firm, manipulating these powerful players and pretending to act as their lackey, all of which gives them as much dirt on him as it does vice versa. For someone who spent his youth studying all day and working his way up from becoming Chief Prosecutor to running the biggest law firm in the country, Choi Tae Guk could clearly aspire to something beyond puppet master. But he can never leave that role. And it isn’t because he has any dirty secrets, but because his son does.

heo-joon-ho3-768x334.jpg

Choi Joo Wan (Ji Seung Hyun) is the biggest thorn in Choi Tae Guk’s side because his life is full of the sort of messes that require multiple people to clean up. They’re the sort of messes that give people ammunition. Case in point: disgraced professor Seo Joo Myung (Kim Young Pil) barges into the law firm to beg Choi Tae Guk for a job. When Choi Tae Guk refuses, all the professor has to do is name drop “what happened 10 years ago,” and Choi Tae Guk suddenly agrees to give him a job. Joo Wan and whatever happened 10 years ago involving a dead man and drugs are Choi Tae Guk’s biggest weaknesses. And as we dig deeper into that period in the past, it seems that it isn’t the only ugly secret Joo Wan and his father are hiding.

2. Jae Yi’s birth mother

Viewers have suspected for some time now that Choi Tae Guk’s granddaughter Choi Jae Yi (Han Joo Hyun) is Soo Jae’s child. Soo Jae’s previous conversation with Joo Wan’s soon-to-be ex-wife seemed to confirm that, but this week “Why Her?” goes one step ahead by having the ex-wife ask Choi Tae Guk who Jae Yi’s birth mother is. If Jae Yi’s mother is in fact Soo Jae, then Choi Tae Guk and Joo Wan have committed an act so depraved that they deserve to be stuck playing “Squid Game” every day of their lives forever.

seo-hyun-jin22-768x334.jpg

This means that they made Soo Jae have her child, told her that the child was dead, and just left her in a hospital in the States to suffer. They made her come back to work while she was mourning her child while they knew that Jae Yi was alive. It’s a plan of such evil that it’s a wonder that Choi Tae Guk can be as shameless as to look Soo Jae in the eyes like he’s done nothing wrong. But crimes perpetuated upon women are sadly nothing new, and this isn’t the only such crime that Choi Tae Guk is involved in.

3. Kang Eun Seo

We finally have a name for the woman that Yoon Se Pil (Choi Young Joon) and Director Baek Jin Ki (Kim Chang Wan) of the law school keep hanging around: Kang Eun Seo (Han Sun Hwa). Soo Jae knows that Yoon Se Pil wants to destroy Choi Tae Guk and his cronies as much as she does, but she doesn’t know why. She also knows that Director Baek is tied to Choi Tae Guk in some way but isn’t sure of the connection. It isn’t until Yoon Se Pil mentions that Director Baek used to have a daughter, whom Yoon Se Pil was supposed to marry, that things fall into place a little.

Spoiler

choi-young-joon-768x335.jpg

The first clue is when Hansu Group CEO Han Seong Beom (Lee Kyung Young) mentions that he recently sold one of his villas, and Yoon Se Pil buys it. The second is when we see a blurry montage of Eun Seo seemingly fleeing from something only to be hit by a car. Yoon Se Pil bitterly vows to Director Baek that some evidence will be left in that house and that he’ll find it even if he has to take the place apart brick by brick.

Spoiler

choi-young-joon-kim-chang-wan-768x333.jp

Whatever happened to Eun Seo promises to be horrifying though if her present condition is anything to do by. She’s barely cognizant of who’s around her, spends her days listlessly painting, and gets spooked when people speak to her. Perhaps this is connected to whatever happened with Joo Wan 10 years ago and also tied to Jae Yi. Given that all these incidents seem to have occurred around the same time, there is a likelihood that they’re linked. And there’s even more hiding in the past that could be tied to this.

4. Jeon Na Jung’s remains

Gong Chan (Hwang In Yeop) has a nasty enough surprise when the newest visit to the legal clinic is his stepmother. She recognizes him by his voice and starts screaming that he’s Kim Dong Gu. No one else at the clinic takes her seriously, but Gong Chan is seriously shaken. Worse, the next day, news comes out of a collapse at a construction area where the Hansu Group CEO recklessly plowed against with digging on land with known issues. The soil collapses, burying nine construction workers and revealing a long-buried corpse.

Spoiler

hwang-in-yeop-1-768x323.jpg

Gong Chan recognizes the corpse immediately from the bracelet around her wrist. It’s Jeon Na Jung (Hwang Ji Ah), his stepsister, the girl he was accused of murdering, the one whose corpse was never found, and where another man was later arrested for the murder. And Gong Chan goes ballistic.

5. Gong Chan’s identity

Next to Soo Jae’s daughter, this was one of the biggest secrets waiting to come out, and it sure does. This week, Gong Chan and Soo Jae admit their feelings (more, Soo Jae doing that latter part) and seal them with a kiss. In a massively dangerous move, she starts living in Gong Chan’s building, feigning the excuse that hers is being “renovated.” They and everyone else know the real reason why. It seems the entire legal aid clinic is aware of Chan’s crush on Soo Jae so they’re all okay with it. Except for Nam Choon Poong (Lee Jin Hyuk), the voice of reason here, who points out how bizarre this entire relationship dynamic is (where is the lie though). As Jo Kang Ja (Kim Jae Hwa) says, it really is the romance clinic not the legal clinic.

91d3e247d9803185beabd0a9f9db20fcff93274f

Post-kiss, Soo Jae tells Gong Chan that the closer they grow, the more he’ll see all the sides of her that she finds shameful. That’s actually a very insightful way to put it because the reason many relationships can end is when people start seeing the embarrassing sides to someone they only ever saw good sides to. Soo Jae says that there’s something that she’s waiting on telling him and that she hopes he can understand it and not dislike her afterwards. Gong Chan echoes the sentiment, telling her not to leave him afterwards.

Spoiler

84e10f571a3f6501c2da051da990b57f25a92f55

To give Gong Chan credit, the second he realizes that he needs to tell her because he can’t keep it locked away anymore, he quite literally begs for five minutes. But Soo Jae brushes him off every chance she gets. It’s not a great indicator for a long-lasting relationship if the other party isn’t willing to make time for you. Plus she saw him crying and just walked away without so much as a “what’s wrong?” And once Soo Jae inquisitively snoops through the investigative room Gong Chan keeps under lock and key and finds the truth, she does the exact opposite of what she asked Gong Chan to do: she runs. The secret’s out now, and so apparently is Soo Jae. Poor Gong Chan.

Spoiler

hwang-in-yeop21-768x334.jpg

Next week shows Gong Chan attempting to explain and being given the cold shoulder (which is quite unfair, really). On the other hand, Choi Yoon Sang (Bae In Hyuk) has changed his hair in a surefire sign of a change in personality. He’s playing a dangerous game, trying to be double-agent and white knight to Soo Jae. In many ways, he’s very similar to her: hardheaded, willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, and protective of his people. But Soo Jae is clearly not interested in him, and the way he keeps trying to force their meetings is discomforting and pushy.

Spoiler

bae-in-hyuk3-768x333.jpg

“Why Her?” seems to be pivoting toward the past week and spilling more detail on all these secrets while Gong Chan and Soo Jae’s relationship flounders. But they’ll need to regroup and fast because everything really is tied together. Soo Jae and crew are going to need all the help they can get to stand up against Choi Tae Guk and his team of evil!

Spoiler

These two aren’t endgame, but why must they look so good together?

Disappointed about Baek Jin Ki asked Soo Jae to drop fighting for Kim Dong Gu's case, was he controlled by the evil man CTK?

My mind's full of their breaking up scenes playing...can't remember most of what I've watched from ep 11, but I'm looking forward for tonight episode 12, more mystery will be revealed.

I hate that this show couldn’t twist the trope around and surprise me. I’m starting to have to detach and complete the five stages of grief like I did with a Eve on my expectation vs reality of this show. I will never understand the trope where the main character breaks up with love interest after finding out the past that involves MC being guilty of some wrongdoing towards that love interest. The only right thing to do would be to admit it to the love interest, apologize, and let THEM choose if they want to break up with you or not. I don’t care if her excuse for the way she treated GC this episode was for his own good. He never was this harsh to her when she was in jail. Ugh whatever, I need to stop letting these shows frustrate me. I’m just gonna go with the flow for now on. I’m gonna have to detach myself if it turns out JY is her daughter and Chairman uses that to force her to marry his son or else I’mma rage drop this and I want to stay until the end.

Seo Hyun Jin Keeps Her Guard Up As Kim Young Pil Confronts Her With A Smug Smile In “Why Her?”

Drama Preview

Jul 9, 2022

SBS’s “Why Her?” shared new previews of the upcoming episode!

“Why Her?” is a mystery romance drama starring Seo Hyun Jin as Oh Soo Jae, a cold-hearted lawyer who has grown empty after only chasing success, and Hwang In Yeop as law student Gong Chan who would do anything to protect her.

Spoilers

Oh Soo Jae finally found out about Gong Chan’s true identity after seeing his past record of being wrongfully accused of the murder of his stepsister Jeon Na Jung (Hwang Ji Ah). Oh Soo Jae could not hide her shock to find out that Gong Chan is the same person as Kim Dong Gu (Yu Gene Woo), the person she defended in the past as a lawyer. She started to push him away, and despite his belated apology, she refused to forgive him, saying, “You deceived me.” However, the real reason she decided to keep her distance from him is because she had given up on his case although she knew he was innocent. Oh Soo Jae shed tears of regret and remorse, saying, “I abandoned Kim Dong Gu. I abandoned you.”

Newly released stills show Seo Joo Myung (Kim Young Pil) showing up during Oh Soo Jae’s lecture. He’s wearing a relaxed, impertinent smile on his face, and she stares at him as if he’s an unwelcome guest. Oh Soo Jae keeps her distance from him with her arms folded in front of her chest, clearly showing her distaste that he dropped by without notice. This scene reminds viewers about Kim Dong Gu’s case from ten years ago when Oh Soo Jae was the lawyer and Seo Joo Myung was the prosecutor.

Gong Chan, Choi Yoon Sang (Bae In Hyuk), Jo Kang Ja (Kim Jae Hwa), Na Se Ryun (Nam Ji Hyun), and Nam Choon Pong (Lee Jin Hyuk) are watching their confrontation in uneasiness. Why did Seo Joo Myung, who was dismissed from the school and now works for TK Law Firm, come back, and what kind of conversation will he share with Oh Soo Jae?

Why-Her2.jpg

The production team shared that the hidden truth of Jeon Na Jung’s case from ten years ago will provide unimaginable shock and twists. They added, “Please watch to see how the relationship of Oh Soo Jae and Gong Chan, who are severely tangled through this case, will flow.”

The next episode of “Why Her?” will air on July 9 at 10 p.m. KST.

Watch: Seo Hyun Jin, Hwang In Yeop, And Bae In Hyuk Share Jokes And Laughter Behind The Scenes Of “Why Her?”

SBS’s “Why Her?” shared a behind-the-scenes look at the drama!

“Why Her?” is a mystery romance drama starring Seo Hyun Jin as Oh Soo Jae, a cold-hearted lawyer who has grown empty after only chasing success, and Hwang In Yeop as law student Gong Chan who would do anything to protect her.

Spoilers

In the first clip, Seo Hyun Jin and Hwang In Yeop film some scenes at the harbor. They enjoy waving to some children down below, getting the idea to wave back at the kids to start the scene. When the staff bring over a number of boxes to help Seo Hyun Jin appear taller, she gets excited at the prospect of choosing one, and afterwards she good-naturedly takes pictures with the children from earlier.

Back at the legal clinic, the atmosphere is bright as the cast members are unable to hold back laughter at the comedic scene. Lee Jin Hyuk doubles over at the exaggerated sound that Kim Jae Hwa makes. In between practicing lines, Kim Jae Hwa once again livens up the set as she begins singing. She then jumps straight back into her lines, which elicits surprised laughter from Lee Jin Hyuk. He turns to the camera and reassures, “These are her lines, don’t worry.”

Why-Her3-800x450.jpg

As night falls, Bae In Hyuk joins Seo Hyun Jin and Hwang In Yeop on the rooftop. After filming a serious conversation, Hwang In Yeop wonders, “What time is it? Aren’t we finishing too early?” Seo Hyun Jin eyes him with a look of betrayal and flings her hand warmer in his direction.

The trio sit around a table as they discuss what appears to be an important choice: Would they rather wear a T-shirt in freezing weather or a parka in sweltering hot weather? They turn to the staff members, who sigh in resignation. Lee Jin Hyuk muses, “A T-shirt and shorts in freezing weather would be tough. Your body would hurt.” Hwang In Yeop adds, “Your arms and legs would disappear.” Seo Hyun Jin counters, “Wearing a parka in hot weather wouldn’t be easy either.”

Finally catching up with the latest two episodes...

Didnt the minister of law candidate said he didnt know the 3 people who kidnapped his daughter; then suddenly he said he knew them at the end of the show, the 3 pathetic men; protected by their powerful fathers?

Sad that Na Yong was raped and killed? Perhaps that wasnt true, that they just kill her and there was no rape on her, how were they able to say she was raped when there was no body to investigate??? Its terrible, being a witness can also lead to someone's death...

Plot is spicing up and those i have read comments voicing dissatisfaction on the romance arch, and renaming the drama to ^Why Him^ nevertheless i still think its an excellent drama available now and i still have no issue with the leads romance...:)

I guess people could feel like that, but then I personally like it as they both dragged each other out of hell, she when she believed him then, and him now when she had lost her human side. It also show the contrast between what means to be human and those people using humans for their own gains.

Both are scarred people... both suffered injustices on their lives more so Kim Dong Gu..... No doubt Gong Chan has special feelings for her because she ^helped^ him previously (now we know she didnt do it all the way) but regardless that gratefulness became respect and love for him.

He wants to find the real murderers of his step sister hence worked hard for it; the fact that she was forced to go back to uni to teach was a different issue.... and fate..

But yeah, exciting episodes to come!

Hwang In Yeop Faces Heo Joon Ho For The First Time In “Why Her?”

Hwang In Yeop Faces Heo Joon Ho For The First Time In “Why Her?”

SOOMPI

Jul 14, 2022

by S. Kim

Spoilers

Previously, Oh Soo Jae and Gong Chan started to dig in Jeon Na Jung’s case. Oh Soo Jae found out that Baek Jin Ki (Kim Chang Wan) has concealed the truth even when he knew that Kim Dong Gu (Yu Gene Woo), was innocent in order to take revenge for his daughter Kang Eun Seo (Han Sun Hwa).

On the other hand, Gong Chan also found out that Oh Soo Jae had lost the past court case in order to protect her family. An inconvenient truth that surfaced after a decade is slowly distancing the two.

The newly released stills capture the legal clinic members fighting in the battle for truth that is fiercer than reality. They are working on whether or not the prosecutor Han, who was in charge of the case of Mr. Kim who was framed for murdering his wife, should be guilty of unlawful confinement.

From Jo Kang Ja (Kim Jae Hwa) and Na Se Ryun (Nam Ji Hyun), who sit face-to-face at each end of the prosecutor’s and lawyer’s seats, to Nam Choon Poong (Lee Jin Hyuk), who is wearing the name tag of the detective in charge, the serious looks on their faces draw attention.

Above all, the participation of Choi Tae Guk (Heo Joon Ho), chairman of TK Law Firm and a former prosecutor, adds to the curiosity. As usual, it is not easy to estimate what his thoughts are as he looks at Kim Dong Gu, whom he had only known as dead, under the name of Gong Chan in a fierce battle with his son Choi Yoon Sang (Bae In Hyuk). There is additional interest on why the mock trial was held and what kind of judgement Choi Tae Guk will make as a judge.

The production team shared, “It will be interesting to infer the meaning of the mysterious case and role of the mock trial that is a reminder of the case from 10 years ago. Through this, Gong Chan and Choi Tae Guk’s first encounter takes place, and a breathtaking conflict and confrontation will be displayed.”

The next episode of “Why Her?” will air on July 15 at 10 p.m. KST.

Seo Hyun Jin Faces Off With Heo Joon Ho After He Learns Hwang In Yeop’s Identity In “Why Her?”

SBS’s “Why Her?” has shared a new glimpse of its upcoming episode!

“Why Her?” is a mystery romance drama starring Seo Hyun Jin as Oh Soo Jae, a cold-hearted lawyer who has grown empty after only chasing success, and Hwang In Yeop as law student Gong Chan, who would do anything to protect her.

Spoilers

Previously on “Why Her?”, Oh Soo Jae tried to push Gong Chan away after learning that he was her former client Kim Dong Gu. However, at the end of the latest episode, she was moved to tears as she overheard him defending her to Choi Yoon Sang (Bae In Hyuk) even after being informed that she’d betrayed him 10 years ago.

In newly released stills from the drama’s next episode, Gong Chan doesn’t waver as he continues to express his unchanging feelings for Oh Soo Jae, who is still consumed with guilt over what she did to him all those years ago. When Gong Chan comes to her house to see her, the couple shares an emotional conversation over the phone as Oh Soo Jae remains standing on her rooftop.

On the other hand, Oh Soo Jae is now more determined than ever to take down Choi Tae Guk (Heo Joon Ho), especially after he’s figured out Gong Chan’s identity.

In the past, the duo has always managed to hide their vicious inner feelings behind false smiles during their interactions—but in these new photos, those nonchalant smiles are nowhere to be found as Oh Soo Jae glares contemptuously at her boss.

For his part, Choi Tae Guk appears impressively unfazed by Oh Soo Jae’s intensity, maintaining his poker face as he coolly returns her gaze.

The producers of “Why Her?” teased, “Choi Tae Guk is the hidden figure in the background who has been the mastermind behind everything that took place over the past 10 years. Please stay tuned to find out what kinds of changes will arise in the fates of Oh Soo Jae and Gong Chan, whose lives once hit rock bottom within [Choi Tae Guk’s] carefully plotted schemes.”

They went on to add, “Starting from today’s episode, the fiercest and most vicious battle will unfold in the remaining four episodes.”

The next episode of “Why Her?” will air on July 15 at 10 p.m. KST.

4 Times Everything Goes Downhill For Hwang In Yeop In Episodes 11-12 Of “Why Her?”

“Why Her?” returns this week with an absolutely riveting pair of episodes as Gong Chan (Hwang In Yeop) gets his time to shine in the spotlight. It was revealed last week that the corpse found at the construction site was that of his stepsister Jeon Na Jung (Hwang Ji Ah) whom Gong Chan was accused of killing. This sends Gong Chan and his friends into a tailspin. When the person he was hoping to rely on through this crisis abandons him after finding the truth, Gong Chan is set adrift. But as it turns out, he is an even bigger victim than he first imagined, and the person whom he relied on the most may have been the biggest betrayer of all.

Here are four times things went awfully wrong for Gong Chan this week.

Warning: spoilers for episodes 11-12 below.

1. Soo Jae’s ugly secret

Oh Soo Jae’s (Seo Hyun Jin’s) reaction to finding out that Gong Chan is Kim Dong Gu (Yu Gene Woo) was uncalled for to begin with. Nothing excused the way she dropped him, acting like he deceived her. She knew he was hurting, knew that he’d tried to tell her the truth, and had even agreed not to run when he admitted to having a secret that he would soon tell her. That conversation they had on opposite sides of the river where Gong Chan pours his heart out as to why he deceived her is just heartbreaking. And instead of offering any sympathy, Soo Jae twists the knife deeper. It’s satisfying to see Gong Chan bitterly say that he was right to lie to her then when this would’ve been her reaction if he told the truth.

But when Soo Jae returns home to sob, we discover the real reason she’s been pushing Gong Chan away. He’s spent his entire life believing that she was the only one who believed him. What he doesn’t know is that she also purposefully lost his trial. As a young public defender, Soo Jae was just beginning her career. Director Baek Jin Ki (Kim Chang Wan) told her to lose the case so he could recommend her as a lawyer to then Chief Prosecutor Choi Tae Guk’s (Heo Joon Ho’s) law firm. Worse, Soo Jae’s wastrel mom and brothers had gotten themselves in trouble with the police, and only Choi Tae Guk could get them out. So, Soo Jae made her decision: to let an innocent man go to jail. The worst part here is that it’s so hypocritical of her to act like she’s hurting Gong Chan for his own good. Instead of being honest with him, she’s leaving him to shoulder this burden alone. Even her tears during that conversation across the river aren’t because of pain at their parting or any sympathy for what he’s been through and is going through. They’re tears of guilt because she was responsible for doing that to him. Soo Jae’s only thinking about herself here, and it’s the worst.

2. The truth is a dangerous thing

Unlike Soo Jae, Gong Chan’s done with hiding the truth. The next time Ji Soon Ok (Bae Hae Sun) comes around to the clinic to apologize for mistaking him for Kim Dong Gu, Gong Chan throws caution to the wind and admits that he is Kang Dong Gu and that Na Jung’s body has been found. Soon Ok almost collapses, especially when Gong Chan tearfully urges her to get a DNA test to prove that the corpse is his stepsister. He had tried to do it himself (after rummaging in Ji Soon Ok’s trash for anything that could be used as a comparing sample), but the police wouldn’t take him seriously.

Spoiler

The rest of the legal aid clinic members happen to overhear him and are startled at the truth, but to their credit, they don’t even treat him a bit differently. They give him all the time and space he needs to navigate his emotions. And that turns out to be just what Gong Chan needs. He visits the man in prison who admitted to killing Na Jung and quizzes him about where he disposed of the body. When the man laughs and says he threw it in the ocean, Gong Chan knows he’s lying. There’s no way a body thrown in the ocean could be found wrapped in a gunnysack, several feet under a construction site. The question is: who put him up to lying? And why? Little does he know that those answers are closer than he thinks, and it’s Soo Jae who has gotten to them first.

3. Baek Jin Ki’s betrayal

As predicted last week, everything that happened 10 years ago is connected. From Soo Jae being ferried off to America, to Choi Joo Wan (Ji Seung Hyun) begging his father on his knees to cover up the fact that he and his friends killed someone, to what happened to Kang Eun Seo (Han Sun Hwa) all ties to Gong Chan. Soo Jae puts two and two together upon watching Yoon Se Pil (Choi Young Joon) unveil a picture as a gift of goodwill to Hansu Group during the progression of their deal. She recognizes the picture as being the same one on Director Baek’s wall and realizes that Yoon Se Pil was the man engaged to Eun Seo. When Soo Jae’s doctor friend recognizes Na Jung’s name and mentions a woman named Eun Seo who was brought to the ER dressed in Na Jung’s clothes, Soo Jae knows the two are connected.

She visits the nursing home where Eun Seo now resides with Director Baek, and the truth comes out in an ugly rush. All Director Baek knows is that his daughter and her friends went to a club from which she vanished. No CCTV captured her, but he was able to find a blackbox video that showed her being kidnapped (after being roofied) by Joo Wan and his two equally entitled, vile friends. From then on, everything is conjecture, but the evidence speaks for itself. The men took Eun Seo to one of the Hansu Group CEO’s villas and sexually assaulted her so seriously that when she stumbled out of the house in the early hours of the morning, she was barely conscious. She collapses in front of Na Jung and begs for help, but the men, Joo Wan included, chase after her. She runs, only to be hit by a car. And Na Jung was the sole witness. From the tidbits we’ve seen of Joo Wan begging his father to cover it up, to Na Jung’s body, to the fact that Na Jung was also sexually assaulted, what must have happened next is a crime of horrendous proportions though we don’t know the details yet. But what’s most important for Soo Jae’s purposes is that this means Director Baek knew that Kim Dong Gu/Gong Chan was innocent at the time he asked her to lose the case on purpose. And he sat back and watched as Soo Jae did just that.

Spoiler

seo-hyun-jin-1-768x329.jpg

It feels a little like Soo Jae is trying to blame Director Baek for her own decisions here because though he isn’t by any means a good person for asking her to do that, it was still her decision to abandon Gong Chan. Moreover, he and Yoon Se Pil have a point that none of them had the power to go up against Choi Tae Guk (who was Chief Prosecutor then) and Hansu Group. Soo Jae, of all people, should understand the importance of powerless people biding their time when going up against powerful megalomaniacs. But in her own misplaced guilt, she condemns Director Baek as well.

Spoiler

seo-hyun-jin4-768x512.jpg

Gong Chan only finds out a small portion of the truth upon continuously running into Director Baek. After Gong Chan was released, Director Baek secretly kept encouraging him to apply for law school by placing their brochure in Gong Chan’s mail box. He felt he owed it to both Gong Chan and Na Jung to right his wrong and get justice for everyone. But Gong Chan doesn’t want to hear it. All he sees is someone who was in the position to right a wrong back when it mattered and who didn’t do so. Unfortunately, Gong Chan is hampered here by the fact that he doesn’t have the full picture with respect to Choi Tae Guk and Joo Wan as well as Hansu Group’s involvement in this entire business, or he might have a slightly less black-and-white view of the situation. But there is someone trying to alert him to that full truth. If Gong Chan’s willing to hear it, that is.

4. Choi Yoon Sang trying to tell him the truth

To give Choi Yoon Sang (Bae In Hyuk) some credit, he recognizes a wrong when he sees one. Upon overhearing that Gong Chan is Kim Dong Gu, he does some digging of his own and quickly realizes what Soo Jae did to Gong Chan. What’s not so great is that he plans to out this secret, not out of loyalty or affection for Gong Chan but to hold it as a barrier between Soo Jae and Gong Chan, which is so not cool.

Spoiler

He arranges for former disgraced sexual predator professor Seo Joo Myung (Kim Young Pil) to butt into Soo Jae’s lecture and bring up the only case Soo Jae’s ever lost: Kim Dong Gu’s case. Soo Jae starts to argue that all the evidence pointed to Kim Dong Gu being innocent and rips into Seo Joo Myung for one-sidedly pursuing a theory that resulted in the incarceration of an innocent man for a year. But Seo Joo Myung laughs and says that it was Soo Jae’s job to argue for her client, and she failed. The police’s coerced and abusive interrogation, their lack of investigation, none of it matters more than the fact that Soo Jae failed. Recognizing that Soo Jae’s being put in the hot seat, Gong Chan defends her, but Yoon Sang cuts in, and Soo Jae knows that he knows the truth.

Gong Chan’s too worked up to notice. His case is being re-argued in front of him, and he’s near breaking point. The other members of the legal aid clinic are super sweet and say they’re here for him, but it’s clear that he’s on the verge of tears, especially when the lecture debate ends with Seo Joo Myung victorious. Afterwards, Yoon Sang corners him on the rooftop of his place to spit out the truth: Soo Jae failed him. She dropped the case to get a foot into Choi Tae Guk’s law firm and get her useless family out of jail. Gong Chan doesn’t know that Yoon Sang also has Soo Jae on the phone while he’s doing this, and she’s close to panic hearing her secret come out.

But in an act of either remarkable bravery or remarkable foolishness, Gong Chan says he doesn’t care, and that Soo Jae made the right decision if she picked her family over him; all he cares is that she believed him when no one else did. She was his reason for living and for surviving all these years. Soo Jae’s in tears listening to him and seems to come to some sort of resolution as the episode ends.

Wow. This was actually a pretty good pair of episodes. Next week shows Soo Jae on the warpath for justice even as Choi Tae Guk now knows that Gong Chan is Kim Dong Gu and has put his most loyal henchman on the duty of killing him. We see that Gong Chan was attacked in the past and left bleeding out to death as well so perhaps surgery accounts for his face looking different. Both Soo Jae and Gong Chan are reluctant to join hands with Yoon Se Pil and Director Baek all the way, but they appear to ally with them to take down their common enemy: Choi Tae Guk and his posse. With tensions at an all-time high and a few secrets still lurking in the background, next week promises to be just as tense. Here’s hoping Gong Chan continues to stay front and center and that he shows some emotion beyond always defending Soo Jae! It would’ve been great to see Yoon Sang’s reveal at least hurting him a bit. Character growth is important, Gong Chan!

Side note: Yoon Se Pil continues to look way too good. Here’s also hoping that he gets a happy ending because after 10 years of plotting revenge, he sure deserves it!
