MBC unveils 2nd half of the year’s most anticipated drama

Celebrating its 60th anniversary, local broadcaster MBC is launching a Friday-Saturday drama season for the first time with “The Veil,” the company announced in a press release Thursday.

The drama, made by MBC with streaming platform Wavve as a co-investor, is a spy action series set to start airing in September.

The new Friday-Saturday drama scheduling will offer more contents to viewers, according to MBC.

MBC's analysis of viewer consumption of content on television and streaming platforms showed demand for dramas to be heavily focused around the weekend, according to Yoo Kun-wook, chief director of content strategy at MBC.

“That is the reason why our company decided to schedule the new drama on Friday and Saturday at 10 p.m., followed by MBC’s hit Friday-Saturday variety shows ‘I Live Alone’ and ‘Omniscient,’ respectively," Yoo said in a press release.

MBC’s first Friday-Saturday drama revolves around a National Intelligence Service agent and his search for a traitor responsible for making his life miserable. Namkoong Min plays the role of the NIS agent Han Ji-hyuk. Actors Park Ha-seon and Kim Ji-eun will co-star the upcoming drama.

Actor Namkoong is returning to MBC drama in eight years after the historical drama “Hur Jun, the Original Story.”

“The Veil” begins airing after MBC’s current Wednesday-Thursday drama “On the Verge of Insanity” comes to an end sometime in September.

Actor Namgoong Min, who stars in MBC's upcoming drama series "The Veil," bulked up for the role of a spy and recently showed off his new pecs on Instagram.

He looked totally different from the floppy-fringed softie women all over Asia have come to love, increasing buzz about what may lie in store with the new TV series.

Set to air in September, the action series is about a spy who returns to work to find a mole after going missing for a year.

MBC invested some W15 billion in the stellar production that marks its 60th anniversary (US$1=W1,151).

It will be aired on Fridays and Saturdays.

Actor Namgoong Min will become secret agent Han Ji-hyuk.

The upcoming Friday-Saturday drama “Black Sun” released a new still image featuring Han Ji-hyuk (played by Namgoong Min) showing off his charms. 

The actor lost a whopping 10 kilograms by exercising in order to play his role for the drama.
 

Han Ji-hyuk is an agent at the NIS (National Intelligent Service) who is widely recognized by his peers due to his expertise in accomplishing missions. He returns to the agency after a year to find out inside traitor who dragged him down.

The MBC drama will premiere in September.

MBC's 'The Veil' writer gives glimpse of action-packed blockbuster

Park Seok-ho, the writer and creator of MBC's spy thriller series "The Veil," has given a glimpse of the upcoming drama, stirring viewers' anticipation. 

"As many spy flicks are, the key of our series is hard-boiled thrills and action," the writer said in a written interview Wednesday. "Especially the main character Han Ji-hyuk, played by Namgoong Min, will surprise (the viewers) as the actor puts on special makeup effects for every episode and bulked up to have the shape of a professional bodybuilder." 

The blockbuster series, which won MBC's drama script contest in 2018, revolves around National Intelligence Service agent Ji-hyuk, who is considered the top field agent and is admired by his colleagues for his skills. 

One day, he mysteriously goes missing while carrying out a mission. A year after he vanished into thin air, he comes back to the agency to uncover the truth of that day and hunt down whoever was responsible for his disappearance. Actress Park Ha-sun will also play the lead role Seo Soo-yeon, Ji-hyuk's former colleague and the head of a team at the agency. 

It is directed by Kim Sung-yong, whose previous works include period series "Flowers of the Prison" and romance series "My Healing Love."

The writer, who is making his debut with the series, revealed that he wanted to tell a story that looks into the intelligence agency.

"There are many series that use an intelligence agency as a backdrop but I didn't think there are any that actually explore the agency from within," he said. "And since I was always interested in governmental organizations, I thought it would be nice to have a series that does so."

The series is titled "Black Sun" in Korean. The writer noted that the title has a double meaning, which hints at the storyline. 

"Black Sun means it's omnipresent, overlooking everything, but it also means living behind the shadow, in the dark, like the intelligence agency," he said. "So the symbolic meanings of the title indicate the psychological struggle of the main character who has put his life at stake to carry out missions for the agency."

The action-packed blockbuster is a 15 billion won ($13.7 million) project to celebrate MBC's 60th anniversary. 

The network, earlier in the week, revealed that the series will premiere on Sept. 17 at 10 p.m., unveiling the official poster. It will air on Fridays and Saturdays every week. 

The series will also be released through waave, the local video streaming platform run by Korea's three broadcasters ― KBS, MBC, and SBS ― and SK Telecom.

Namkoong Min is an actor who has a special passion and attachment to acting. "Please look forward to the endless acting transformation that Namkoong Min will show in the future," he said.

This renewal is the third contract between Namkoong Min and 935 Entertainment. Earlier, Namkoong Min renewed his contract in 2019 after signing an exclusive contract with his current agency in 2015.

Namkoong Min has shown his presence by showing character digestibility regardless of genre. MBC's Friday-Saturday drama "Black Sun," which is set to premiere on the 17th, is predicting an all-time synchronization rate, playing the role of the NIS' best agent "Han Ji-hyuk" and gaining 10kg for the character.

Meanwhile, MBC's 60th-anniversary special "Black Sun" airs every Friday and Saturday at 10 p.m. It can also be viewed through Wavve, the largest online video service platform in Korea.

‘The Veil’ has taken off its veil.

 

On the 16th, The Veil held its press conference online. This new drama is the first MBC’s Friday-Saturday series, which was established to commemorate the 60th anniversary.

The Veil is a Korean-style investigation action series that revolves around the top National Intelligence Service (NIS) agent. In his endeavor to uncover the internal traitor that brought him to his downfall, he confronts a much bigger enemy behind the organization.

Director Kim Suk Yong shared, “It would be a lie if the title of the ‘Korean blockbuster action drama’ were not burdensome. When I first received the script, I was surprised by its extraordinary scale and spectacular plot. But on the other hand, it also became a burden.”

He continued, “I heard that there are no movies or dramas that have been filmed by direct visits to the NIS for more than 10 years. But we actually filmed at the headquarters thanks to NIS’s wholehearted support.”

 

Namgoong Min said, “There was a time when stylish, light, and attractive dramas were popular. But I was getting a bit sick of such a format, and that’s when I came across ‘The Veil’ scripts. It was so heavy. I really wanted to do it. I believe that that heaviness is an element that you fall in love with.”

The actor already made headlines when he bulked up his body for the role. Regarding it, he commented, “Han Ji Hyuk takes revenge then gets punished, so I wanted him to be seen as someone aggressive and can’t be meddled with.”

He then jokingly added, “As soon as the drama is over, I’m going to stop my workout. Then I’ll stuff myself with flour and something delicious. I loved working out, but when I started in earnest for my job, I started hating it. It became a burden, and I even had a nightmare.”

His co-star, Park Ha Sun, also expressed her determination. “The actual NIS agents used a stiff tone. So the toughest thing was acting with that tone. I increased my practice time by 5 times for this project.”

Namgoong lastly added, “I’m always under pressure as I continue my career. This project, too, was burdensome, and I’m doing my best to overcome that burden.”

The Veil, starring Namgoong Min, Park Ha Sun, and Kim Ji Eun, will premiere on the 17th at 10 PM KST.

Namgoong Min is working on selecting his next project!

 

On January 7, it was reported that the actor will be starring in the upcoming SBS drama “1000 Won Lawyer” (literal title).

 

In response to the report, Namgoong Min’s agency 935 Entertainment clarified, “‘1000 Won Lawyer’ is one of the projects he was offered. Nothing has been decided yet.”

 

“1000 Won Lawyer” is about a troublemaker lawyer who is extremely skilled but charges 1000 won ($0.83) as his attorney’s fee. Written by siblings Choi Soo Jin and Choi Chang Hwan who previously created “Defendant,” “1000 Won Lawyer” won the SBS Script Contest in 2015.

 

Anticipation is high for Namgoong Min’s next drama as he has shown great success recently through Daesang (Grand Prize) wins two years in a row with SBS’s “Stove League” in 2020 and MBC’s “The Veil” in 2021.

Actor Namgoong Min was the winner of the Grand Prize at the 2021 MBC Drama Awards on Thursday for his role in the spy action thriller, "The Veil."

This win is the second time the 43-year-old actor has notched the highest honor at a year-end awards ceremony hosted by a major broadcaster, following his win at last year's SBS Drama Awards, for his performance in the popular sports series, "Hot Stove League."

"A long time ago, I was here at the MBC Drama Awards. I was already very happy to just take part in the ceremony itself, but after congratulating all the other actors and returning home, I had a slight feeling of emptiness and sadness," Namgoong said during the ceremony held at the studio's headquarters in Sangam-dong, western Seoul. "But I am so thankful to be given such a huge honor after all these years."

He added that the action-packed blockbuster with a 15-billion-won ($12.6-million) budget was inevitably a time-consuming production, especially in terms of its technical execution.

"Each scene would require a chunk of time and a number of experts to shoot. There was a little part of me wishing we had more time in production. Despite all of that, the show wrapped up as well as it did thanks to the hard work of our staff and cast."

"The Veil" was an ambitious big-budget project for MBC, the drama series of which have continued to suffer from low viewer ratings in recent years.

Although the show ultimately failed to score two-digit viewer ratings, it presented Namgoong as a versatile actor, as he played the lead role of Han Ji-hyuk, an elite National Intelligence Service agent on his road to a truth-seeking vendetta.

The story follows the top field agent as he takes part in a confidential operation taking place in the Chinese city of Shenyang. The mission quickly goes sideways, with his teammates dead and him mysteriously vanishing into thin air. He returns to the agency a year later, suffering from memory loss, and goes on a search to uncover the horrible truth behind that day.

Nam Goong-min won Daesang (The Grand Prize) at MBC Drama Awards for his spectacular performance in 'The Veil', the drama received commercial and critical acclaim and worked as a factor to resurge the MBC network after a stagnant period where its dramas struggled in terms of ratings. While he received the award, he got emotional reminiscing the times when he merely attended Awards but didn't win any.

 

During his speech, he went on to say "It always feels strange to receive an award at the end of the year. It’s been a long time, but I have been at the MBC Drama Awards before. I was happy just to be attending the awards at the time, but when I went home and laid down alone in bed, I felt somehow numb. It wasn’t a negative feeling. I don’t know what the feeling was. A lot of time has passed since then, and I’m sincerely grateful to be receiving such a big award."

 

He also shared his experience of working with 'The Veil' director and showed his gratitude to him “Starting two months before the drama began filming, I called the director every day. I think the director led us well and energetically on set with his bright smiling face." He concluded by sweetly thanking his girlfriend and made his fans sweep over their feet by saying “Ah Reum, thank you for always being by my side, I love you.” Now, how adorable is that!

I've been thinking the same thing! He is in talks for 2 lawyer roles. In that case, I would go for 1000 Won Lawyer. It sounds interesting! On the other hand, a drama set to air in 2023 is a long shot. Hope he would accept 1000 Won Lawyer and returns to the small screen within 2022.
