WOW amazing episode. CK thinks SR is the ticket to ruin JH's family. Spoilers ahead.

      Hide contents

LOVED the love confession. It was so sweet and natural from SR's side. She's felt it all this time but in her last moments, she didn't want to hide it. CK has been on their tail right from the beginning but the tables are going to turn on him soon because SR has finally found the watch that will expose all of CK's evil operations.

I'm still feeling like as a reward for exposing such a big scale corruption in NK military, SR' reward will be free passage back to SK. JH's father will pull some strings to make it happen.

Glad to see that SR's father knows that she might be alive, let's see how he rectifies what happened in the shareholders meeting.

And Dan, she is about to see how much JH loves SR. Either she will back out of the engagement or she will be forced to back out.

@Ss79 Ep. 8 is basically the force of the fathers:

    Spoiler

In the North, Dan knows the fastest way to end this pair of lovers by going to JH's father. He'll do what is necessary to retain the reputation and name of the family. As CK knows JH's father is on the nigh of his career and he's about to finish his military service and his power won't be as vast as it is. He finds a great opportunity for him to come into the picture and dethrone JH's family.

In the South, it's heart warming to know the President still holds hope for his youngest daughter even if he has filed a death certificate for her missing body. There is a chance that the lovers get pulled to S. Korea is instigated by the fathers.

Ep. 8 is also the start of melodrama.

    Spoiler

What frustrates me is that she's pushing him away and only to chase after him about 5 minutes of ruminating about him. How could you run after him and get into a car that has ran out of gas?! Then says, I just want you safe, I don't have any other reason for being nice here. That's to undo all the good work you've put in ep. 7, c'mon. You got to be consistent, writer!

SJ's character and his motivation / reasoning:

    Spoiler

The more I see SJ the more I'm unsure about him. What is he truly after? Her hand in marriage, how could he use this opportunity to make her rely on him and resume the ill arranged marriage that isn't meant to be. I don't like how slimy he is, even if Dan is trying to break apart the couple she isn't exactly unethical about it? Dan isn't going about it in a very shady, legal way...although the two of them are definitely looking for the same result - the separation of JH and SR, Dan is still trying to reinstate the previous equilibrium / status quo - even if her mother has heard from the talkative, drunk soldier, Dan doesn't try to stir the pot and make her mother remember anything about she heard.

The most touching scene is definitely the ending:

    Spoiler

JH refuses to accept that the previous goodbyes are valid and that they need to see each other once again before she goes off. When he said, "just describe anything, I can find you - just let me know where you are', that really broke my heart. He would follow her anywhere, he would go anywhere for her. He would do anything just to make sure she is safe. That look of despair and that single tear that fell to his cheeks really made my heart twinge.

AND ANOTHER 7 DAYS FOR 2 MORE EPs, THEN 2 WEEKS OF WAITING. AAAAAH.

I know most of us are so busy going gaga over JH and SR, but has anyone seen this video by TVN of our potential 2nd couple?

I mean, their interactions are pretty friendly and definitely worth a storyline of their own too!

Like @hibiscus23 , @yongwonhi4jfc and a few of us have pointed out, it will be nice if SD is out of the love triangle. After all, JH and SR have enough obstacles in their way already, what with the whole political situation and badasses out to get JH and his family. Plus SD is gorgeous and outstanding in her own way, I really do not wish to see her become that stereotypical jealous, scheming and pathetic second lead.

@dftio @hibiscus23 The casting director did a really good job at evaluating the chemistry between the leads. Not only are they visually compatible, but (and if the second leads are to be together) their personalities and mannerisms match. I am looking forward to more on-screen moments of Dan and GSJ. But how likely is that RJH can get out of N. Korea (based on the behind the scenes photos we saw when they were filming in S. Korea) and so does Dan?

The writing is sooooo good in this drama. That writer is not afraid to just go there instead of holding back. JH telling his fiance straight out, yeah, I like this other woman, how can I marry you? The fiance bringing him the page from the magazine. The script doesn't hold back or shy away from letting these things happen, and they naturally set off new actions. So it never feels padded or dragged out. Plus, the way they lace in funny moments in the midst of tension or romance or sadness. Just excellent. (I was dying over the apartment tour... ) I'm so glad the drama is back, hope they don't have any more interruptions.

@frozentundra you know what, I expected the kiss but I did not expect RJH to be so frank and so upfront with Dan. In a way he's trying to make sure he's responsible and is kind to Dan to let her know it's him that's letting down the side of the agreement and it's nothing to do with her. The writer is good at lacing comical moments even in difficult conditions, she's able to give heart-warming scenes when everything else is bleak. Without the chatty North korean doctor/nurse, he wouldn't have known his 'lover' donated blood and had worried about him. They have now saved each other at least once. RJH and the song he dedicated his brother has saved her life once, her blood runs in his veins. There's more nuances than I expected as well - especially how they have crossed paths more than once before and that the writer has created this layered narrative that needed to be filmed at the beginning in Switzerland.

Nothing is funnier than Pyongyang-ers' reactions to what the peripheral villagers do with their apartments. Doesn't matter if the flat is furnished with the newest fridge - they're able to reuse it with a different purpose. Dan's mother is the one comic relief that juxtaposes how rational and stoic Dan is.

What most took me aback was SJ character!!! omg i thought the writer would build his relationship with D so they'd just become 2nd otp but after his confession to D about arranged marriage, i was like wait a minute so the woman he couldn't forget, it's SR?!? then bam the ending, when he answered her call and said he'd go to her. And when he lights up the candles, idk but it was downright creepy to me. Jung Hyun acting was wow, he really scared me a bit there, esp when he says SR doesn't need JH anymore and now has him. (don't kill me but i gotta say they have some sort of chemistry at this scene xD) the writer really took me off guard of this character development >< it makes it more complicated but still i love complex characters. SJ seems to be so aloof that he almost fooled me. I hope his character will bring more drama cause it's so interesting, although i might hate him later for that x)

Most of time i hate noble idiocy in drama, here SJ really put the situation on the table to SR, that in fact her being here will bring harm not only to her but JH and others. The timing was so crucial, bc now SR has realized how JH became someone important to her. so SJ speech will affect her much more. ofc it's not that simple now, herself can just leave, but what happens if JH is caught hiding her all this while. If she stayed with him any longer sth is gonna happen sooner or later. So i can understand SR if she decides in next ep to put on an act with SJ in front of JH,  to cut tie with him even though it's gonna break her, his, our hearts omg TT need to prepare more tissues tomorrow damnit

@RanP You took the words out of my mouth! The kiss was so sweet, innocent and pure. I thought RJH was going to swoop in and give her one of those dramatic kdrama kisses but this kiss was his first request to overstep her boundaries. It was so befitting a relationship where they have been caught up in their own feelings yet never dared to admit.

I am also taken aback about SJ. I agree, his actions are so creepy! It's like full on taking SR as hostage, lying to her face about how he has contacted her family and make her believe him fully and utterly. Little does she know he still has deep feelings for her and that she has to trust him in order to get them both out. He's definitely going to be double crossed by either his tour guide or CCG.

I am a little worried about pacing though, like what are they going to do for another 8 eps?! I am worried that there is another opportunity which SR needs to sacrifice for RJH's safety since the writer was alluding to it in ep. 7.

MY FAV MOMENTS IN EP 7:

      Hide contents
    • When JH realizes the truth from the DR/Nurse that Seri saved his life and cried all day for his sake
    • When Pyo Chi-soo expresses disappointment that Seri is STILL here but in reality got busted for lying because he was actually worried for her
    • When JH's mom stood up for him in front of the dad for blaming him
    • When Seri found the photo of her while digging through JH's belongings
    • OF COURSE *THE KISS* but WHAT IN THE WORLD WHY WAS IT SO FAR I COULDN'T SEE
    • When Seri made JH choose between the 3 options and sewed a heart on his jacket LOL
    • When JH flat out told SD that he likes Seri
    • When SJ actually cares for Seri and is worried for her. WOW DID NOT SEE THIS COMING that he likes Seri? THAT WAS A SPIN FOR ME. All along I thought we were being set up for the second OTP but in reality, we found out that after his engagement with Seri broke off, he realized his true feelings for her. WHAAAT
    • When Seri/JH shared the bed <3

@m i s z CHEN I did not expect them to put cute scenes post-traumatic events. The writer knows how to balance the tone without it going ridiculous or absurd. I'd wish JH comes out of his shell a bit more so we can see a bit more fluff - but their body language and how JH comes as her knight in shining amour works for me too.

@justamom the beauty of korean dramas / east asian language, the ambiguity has always been implied and acknowledged - how else can we enjoy the flirtationships between RJH & SeRi, they're not quite a couple but they have gone beyond friendship with their intimacy. A huge reason to why we all love kdramas is the non-verbal signs of unconfessed love - why do we do this to ourselves? Seriously English needs to come up a word for 애매 / 曖昧.

By the way, I was watching with my husband (my rewatch but his first watch) and he remarked that Seo Dan’s mother must have paid for Jeong Hyeok’s studies in Switzerland and in exchange Jeong Hyeok’s parents gave their son in marriage to her daughter. If that is the case, I think Jeong Hyeok’s father must have been an upright man. Despite being the number 1 in the military, he has not taken bribes and so, did not have money to send him to Switzerland for his music studies. And Jeong Hyeok’s brother must have crossed paths with Cheol Gang regarding his shady operations. Maybe Jeong Hyeok’s father will do something about Cheol Gang once he knows what he’s done to his son.

@KimSooHanMoo Your husband is a pro! That makes a lot of sense to why Dan's mother was saying this relationship was sustained by money and yet they're fobbing Dan off. @luvcrabbieshinhwa I don't know about Dan's father having a higher position - but it seems like those who own/have more USD have even more power than those who hold political positions in this society (at least in Dan Omma's eyes).

Hmmmm... Quite a number of people are worried about the ending because Seri mentioned about Romeo and Juliet. I am hopeful though, cos she also mentioned during their chimaek date that anyone who catches the first snow with the person they love, their love would be fulfilled. I definitely hope that's true!!

@sharluvsenergy I think SeRi mentioned Romeo & Juliet to start but the North Koreans didn't understand so she equated to a very famous folktale that exists in both Korea / China. The tale of the cowherd (symbolising the star altair) and the weaver girl (symbolising the star vega) - their forbidden love led to them banished to the opposite sides of heavenly river (the milky way). The version that Koreans know it revolves around Jingnyeo (the weaver girl) that falls in love with Gyeonu the herder. Once a year, on the 7th day of the 7th month, a flock of magpies would form a bridge to reunite the lovers for one day. This is also why Chinese valentines day is on 7th July in the lunar calendar month.

    5xHEt0Q.png

This is why SeRi insinuated the help she gets from Yeong Ae Eonnie is equivalent to the bridge that allows the lovers to meet.

    0sUmJ73.png

From this, it seems like they're insinuated these star-cross lovers won't die at tragic death like Romeo and Juliette, but they're torn apart and only to meet very sparsely, once a year - in perhaps Switzerland?

This is it. Out of all characters in this drama, the most complex personality is Seri (at least for me). I enjoy watching her growth. How I wish she grew up in a decent environment. Being an illegitimate daughter is never easy. Having two big brothers who are always looking for her weaknesses means that she needs to be cautious everytime.

Has it been confirmed that this drama Is only for 16 episodes? With 10 episodes left, it’s a bit too optimistic to cover all the storylines.

We haven’t even covered SR or JH’s stories. We still don’t know why the evil guy becomes who he is now. Some clarifications that I would like to watch:

      Reveal hidden contents

    Seri:

    1. Who is her mother? What happened to her? Why was she on the beach counting numbers? Who gave her that necklace?

    2. What happened between SR and her step mother? How did she end up leaving the family? What drives her to try to kill herself?
    3. What was her turning point? Why did she suddenly want to live?

    JH:

    1. Why did he agree to the engagement?
    2. Are his parents related to SD’s mom? Why do they feel obligated to satisfy SD’s mom? Could it be related to SD’s father death?

    3. What happened between JH, JH’s dad, and the evil guy? Why do the evil guy hate his guts?

And the most important question, what happened in Switzerland?

Now about SD, although I am still not fond of her, I hope she has a good character development. Up until now, I feel like she is leaning towards a one dimensional character. I rewatched the writer’s previous works and the second female leads have almost same traits and they are....decent. So, I cross my finger that the writer could give her a room to grow in the upcoming episodes.

As for the drama itself, now I am pretty sure that we wouldn’t see Seoul as soon as I thought it would be. The chemistry between the two lead actors carries the drama. Thus, they are going to finish the NK’s plots before moving to Seoul. However, I am still optimistic that JH will follow SR just to ensure her safe return. I am still betting that the ending would be somehow an open ending.

@INeedAFan I love your analysis - Indeed, SeRi has the most complex relationship in this drama. want to know about the episode where SeRi was abandoned by the sea, where her being lost in the sea of people conjured up those pangs of fear and feelings of shame. It's interesting that the narrative retells how she was the beloved daughter of her dad's yet she was abandoned and made to defend herself. She is sure of herself and she has built her company from absolute scratch, yet she sought for euthanasia once in Switzerland. SeRi may be cheeky and bubbly in front of F4 (ducklings) but inside, she may not be as fearless as she seems. She is by far the most multidimensional character, and I really hope that the character development in the later episodes will not let us down!

I do want to know if Dan is as strong as her character or it's a farce that she has to put on due to her mother being a widow (maybe very early on) and her being as self-sufficient as possible. That would humanise her and make me like her a bit more, which only complexes this narrative further.

    9 hours ago, KimSooHanMoo said:

Wow..that’s a very good analysis! I hadn’t realized that SeRi had only been in NK for that short a period until I read your timelines analysis! Thank you so much!

@Ameera Ali @Jemrie I love all of your gifs and hilarious and witty captions. Keep them coming! Thank you so much and thank you to all our Soompiers here for making this thread so enjoyable.

From the latest stills, it looks like Jeong Hyeok’s gaze was already on SeRi when he chanced upon her in Switzerland. When she was taking a picture of him and Seo Dan, his eyes were on her. After she returned the camera to him, he stole a look at her again :wub:

Looking at Seo Dan, you can already detect the animosity she felt towards SeRi at that moment. Or was she just unhappy with Jeong Hyeok coz she was facing him just before that and she could sense something that triggered her jealousy right away?

So their “destiny” started in Switzerland.

From the first teaser it looks as if the two of them were searching for someone in Switzerland and it looked like it was a different time frame from these stills and them watching the paragliders scene - so I think the searching for the other is in the future. Am guessing that they will go back to Switzerland again and find each other there.

Like most of you I too think that the best ending to hope for is an open ending. Think the ending will be in Switzerland- am guessing the start (love at first sight) and end of their romance story will be in Switzerland.

A reunification does not look feasible given that we have only 10 episodes left and there are still many story arcs to cover and conflicts to resolve (SeRi and her family, Jeong Hyeok and Seo Dan, Jeong Hyeok and Cheol Gang, Goo Seung Jun and Seo Dan, Seung Jun and SeRi’s brother, even the wiretapper and Cheol Gang etc etc). So working in a reunification ending which definitely adds a huge political conflict between the two sides of the peninsula to the whole lot of conflicts that need to be resolved doesn’t seem to be practical. Besides, I don’t really want the drama to risk any backlash from the Korean public - the drama had just only come out of that whole “romanticizing NK” sensitivity.

Re Seo Dan and Jeong Hyeok, it just struck me that the lack of feelings could be mutual. Jeong Hyeok is treating his marriage with her in a “business-like” manner (“Just let me know what you want me to do and I’ll co-operate”). Similarly, she is also treating it in a cold transaction-like fashion with her idea that the process just involves “love” coming before “marriage”. We don’t see her having heart-flutters at the thought of him, or any genuine liking for him. So I hope she will realize soon that there’s no love lost in letting him go. The drama relationship chart only shows one line from Seung Joon to her (if I remember correctly) and so I don’t think there will be a loveline between her and him though it would really be nice if we get to see a bit of that loveline as well coz their chemistry at that rooftop was really good.

Urghh..can we not have many many more episodes?! I want more screen time of our OTP romantic moments, of adorable Hyeok-ie speaking 10 pretty words to his tomato plant, of hopelessly-in-love Hyeok-ie getting all jealous over finger hearts etc, SeRi and our ducklings etc etc...am not ready to part with the drama in just 10 more episodes :cold_sweat:

@KimSooHanMoo I just want more fluff moments, stop giving me heart-breaking, drama induced moments where we all speculate on this forum about how she's going to make it out of N. Korea. I agree with you I think Seo Dan has a cold and calculating nature about how she sets up the dinner for both parents, one that she created on the spot when she was in that hair salon chair. But you can see that kind of longing that she wishes it was her. It only occurs to me that the photo of RJH and Dan the visual representation of the love triangle that's going on - both women are looking towards RJH and yet JH has never once gone for Dan. This is the very beginning of the fate/destiny - as cliche as it sounds, this better not descend into a full blown melooooodrama.

@yongwonhi4jfc this drama is air on the most popular slot in tvN. And it’s the only drama airing at the time slot (no competition from other broadcast channels). List of dramas in the time slot during 2019 and their average ratings

    1) Memories of Alhambra (8.5%)

    2) Romance Is A Bonus Book (5.1%)

Ratings isn’t important to us the overseas viewers but it is very very important to the actors and production staffs as ratings is like one of their KPI.

@liltash85 Thank you for the stats :) Ratings aren't too important to overseas fans but at the same time HB wanted 20+% or more to break records, that'll be sweet. Especially how hard they have worked on this series, the crew and the whole team deserve amazing raatings. I was wondering more about broadcasting over the Christmas - Lunar New Year period, what is like historically for other dramas that broadcated around then?

I am not too sure, I don’t watch many kdrama these days (last year, I only watched Sky Castle until episode 8 or 9). I googled the timeslot and I think this drama airs on a new timeslot for tvn.

To be honest, good ratings don’t mean a lot to me :D. I am someone who watches kdramas for their antics (I guess that’s why I dropped Sky Castle). At first, I didn’t plan to watch this drama, but my sister watched it on Netflix and I am hooked hahahaha.

One may argue that ratings are important for the sake of the actors and their production teams. However, this drama airs on Netflix simultaneously, so I don’t think ratings represent the popularity of this drama.

Could we get competent korean speakers (not me) to translate this. I get the gist of it but cannot translate it properly.

@yongwonhi4jfcwoah you got me there, i shld also rewatch SG bc it's been a few yrs old & i need to refresh my mem again on his acting there, etc. You also must've seen him in Marry a Millionaire or something, I liked him there too but again I hardly remember how he was in that movie :(  Hmm i sure hope so that 7 & 8 will make all us comrades here very happy & satisfied - after all they're making us wait for another 'long' week to have a glimpse of our OTP!  hahaha same here i just can't stand the tension either it's killing me! LOL

One of the things I admire about HB if i'm not mistaken is his being down-to-earth persona and I believe he must be a very good person off cam as well with SYJ so I ship these two & hope we'll hear about them dating off cam soon! After all, they're both eligible bachelors!

ah thx for that note on why the 'hidden' stuff hve been removed. :o

@hibiscus23 I haven’t watched millionaire but may need to since im struggling to get by a week without watching hyun bin. I’m replying at work - this is how obsessed I have turned.

Memories of how MOA ended also flashed through my head. Spoilers about the ending of that drama in the spoiler.

      Reveal hidden contents

I loved that drama so much but it left so much unresolved in the end. Plus, the OTP are not together without really even a hint or hope that they might be together some day. Just the female lead watching the male lead in the game. :(

I guess it was good that she knew that he did not die and still "existed" within the game, but seriously no payoff of any kind after a steady build up of chemistry. :(

Given who the writer of this drama is, I'm still hoping for a happy albeit unrealistic ending. Just not sure, and perhaps it will just be a compromise ending of some kind?

And, as you say, HB is absolutely dashing. There is always a certain look and sensitivity to his eyes regardless of what role he takes on that seems as if he's showing you a bit of his soul.   Plus, he does seem to play stoic NK military officers with some flair, e.g. Confidential Assignment and this drama. :D

HB was always an extremely talented actor, but in terms of his looks, I definitely prefer his post-military look to his pre-military look. :)

@stroppyse you’re right! I do prefer him after military - I feel like his roles are more mature but also because his shoulders are broader and he’s fitter post-military. He was too skinny in SG since he needed to be “feminine” when he body swapped.

Gosh, I loved every word you said about RJH going beyond what is expected and doing things out of character. I can't wait to see the next episodes....this is driving me insane! LOL

I really hope Dan calls off the engagement, but I see where you're coming from. It was such a long engagement and her family (I don't know if I feel that way about Dan yet, but her mom is definitely kind of prideful). It would or could be an embarrassment to call off the engagement unless RJH's family's name is tainted and they want to call it off...although I just can't see RJH calling it off. HE is too filial for that. We will have to wait and see how this all turns out. Keeping me on my toes!

@m i s z CHEN If we have learnt anything pride is so important in kdrama - imagine conservative North Korea and their norms and ideals , Dan would never live it down or accept such a tarnish to her name. Even if her husband doesn’t love her, she is still going through with the wedding. Even with the other village ajumma, their words to SeRi truly emphasises the need to marry for practicality and love is only something that remains in your mind. Ouch I don’t want this for our protagonist but we shall seeeee!

This is the real love story between a NK man and a SK woman. the guy is a defector of coz.

    http://www.barcroft.tv/north-korea-south-korea-divide-forbidden-love-story-eric-lafforgue

My prediction of our Riri love story is

    * YSR identity will be known by JGC and he will used this important piece of information for his benefit to control RJH and his family and also GSJ. He will also get SD involve in his plan and to get her influenced.

    * (i know it's cliche) but YSR will take the noble idiocacy route to save RJH and of coz JGC will lie to her that the exchange is her safety return to SK but God knows what is his plan for her, kill her or put her in concentration camp.

    * Uri Capt Ri will eventually find out about it and confront JGC and he also get to know the involvement of SD in the deal. He will save YSR and called off the wedding and tell his family that he has fall in love with a SK woman.

    * His father will object at first but eventually realized he is loosing he will loose his son if he forced him. (prob his ommani will open his father's eyes).

    * His father will use his power and make him can continue staying outside NK (read Switzerland), continue his passion in music and not require to comeback to NK to serve the country.

    * He will meet Seri again, but now he is a free man. Probably in Swiss they can be together (marry or not) and do not bound to their difference in citizenship.

I know this is cliche, but this is the most likely what I can predict. But I hope the writer will surprise us.

@liltash85 this is too accurate. It’s actually hurting me to say this but I think you’re 85% there. Cliche as it is I don’t think the author would go too far from what she’s used to.

That is very true - you're right. I was too optimistic about a reuniification. I do think a more appropriate ending would be somewhere in Switzerland. Although I would hate for them to only be able to see or meet each other every X amount of months, but I don't know if the writer will take us that many years ahead. I think they will reunite in Switzerland and it (HOPEFULLY will not be an OPEN ending, but at least a happy ending) where they work something out! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

@m i s z CHEN No not at all, I think you had a valid point and I do hope for a happy ending too! But I just don't know if reunification is a good idea to portray in a light-hearted drama...that has yet to descend into a truly melodramatic drama. It will break my heart just thinking about how they need to wait for each other and this forbidden love.

    pTR49UP.gif

I think RJH has been very filial and respectful to his parents but not enough to completely ignore his feelings. His cold facade has cracked more than once when he's with her and he has broken a few rules for SeRi. Okay, I don't expect him to renounce his whole family and come out as the enemy of the state but his repressed feelings surely need to be overcome after trying to protect her from gunfire and being killed. The lengths that he has gone through to secure the safety of SeRi has gone beyond what is expected and what he should have done. If anything, everything he has done so far has been 'out of character' for his rank and his background. Marrying Dan is responsibility but when it comes to tugging his heart strings I don't think he has issues kissing or showing SeRI affection. Especially after this life/death situation, maybe the knetizens are right in predicting a hospital kiss - that he's so overwhelmed with this affection that he shows her the kind of affection that make the other soldier blush. That's the kind of scene I'd love to see next week :D

    1gV0Tgd.gif

    DxNcHno.gif

He only grins when it comes to her antics

I don't think Dan will call off the engagement, especially after the reputation she has with such a long engagement. Perhaps to throw someone else off their path and to not reveal her true feelings that's why she said "I care not if my fiance is dead or hurt?!" Especially for someone to held onto a photo - the only confirmation of this engagement has ever taken place. To remove this huge obstacle to their love is to take away the tension far too early in this series - I feel like to make sure it's ultra melodramatic, they won't remove this source of angst.

@yongwonhi4jfc@ same here  i thought i'd stopped watching kdramas for a while to hv a brk so for the past months or so i kinda lagged on & watched some SYJ's old dramas even All Alone, etc plus Summer Scent & lately her movie with HB The Negotiator but anyway this drama really got me hooked again & since I heard about it I just kept searching for articles & updates about CLOY and voila here I am converging w/you comrades again! Well HB charac in SG as I can recall & agrees w/you was a bit of arrogant & this drama really fits him and once again his innocent looks just makes me love him more .

In about a few hours this page grew so much it's hard to keep up LOL!

Some of you mentioned reunification, i think we can only hope/pray it will happen one day, some day bc after all it shld just be ONE country and not separated at all which affects a lot of families for decades now & we hear a lot of stories  - sad ones fr how their lives in NK have been and as we speak may have been harder compared to ppl in SK!

Anyway, that kiss or next kiss will be much anticipated in the next few weeks LOL

BTW how come some of the hidden stuff are no longer working here? :o

Woah so much to read here & I just can't keep up hahaha

@hibiscus23 I had to rewatch secret garden to remind myself what HB was like before this role. He has grown so much and he's become such a mature actor now with looks to pair. Let's hope that episodes 7 & 8 contain at least one kiss because goodness me I cannot withstand the tension anymore~~~

What are we all going to do until next weekend? Ahhhh. I’ve been wasting a lot of time hanging out at DC Inside, the Korean forum, and will try to translate bits of this superb essay I found a few days ago. In the meantime, here’s a translation of something I just read:

”Jeong Hyuk’s going to kiss her first. She’ll be crying for whatever reason and at a loss for words, all he can do is answer her with a kiss.”

”Omo that feels so real my heart fluttered just reading that”

“Not something he would normally do but yes, when something happens to make him lose control” (like someone pointing a gun at Seri? Hmm...:phew:)

”Oh I can’t imagine, Jeong Hyuk’s repressed emotions showing through?”

And from another post: “is there any other way for Seri to return to South Korea?”

”Nah. She’d have to die first. But that would kill Jeong Hyuk too.”

More translations later when I need a break from work

P.S. no wonder the preview from ep 7 was so bare!!! It barely told us anything! Because they hadn’t finished shooting it obviously. Haha.

@justamom omg I love this! I've been lurking there as well ! They're definitely speculating the scene of the next kiss

@JMarei These photos are so telling about HB and SYJ's relationship - This scene is meant to be so sombre yet they're at ease with each other. Their chemistry is undeniable, they seem so comfortable with each other even tvN is broadcasting them aha.

@Ameera Ali I absolutely love this scene, when Kdrama show how much the guy is lingering and setting up a situation where they 'passed by' at the right time are the cutest. The idea that they want to seem aloof and unattached actually backfires when they try again and again to make sure the timing is right between them. Who knew HB is this good a slapstick actor - especially that landmine scene made me laugh out loud.

@yongwonhi4jfc hahaha i do recall that scene & what really makes me admire HB's charac more is his innocent looks & being so naive! I hv a strong feeling he'll defect to the South & be w/his love of his life SR! We just can't wait right? However, it's sad to realize we won't see CLOY this w/end :( I also like the part where he was cooking diligently for SR & his kitchen/cooking skills were just too impressive! Sometimes I almost wished there's someone in the NK who would be like him, we may never know bc after all some of them may have a heart like him! Look at the 4 squads they're just adorable too!

Yes let's hope the ratings go waaay up - after all this drama & the writer/s deserve it let alone the leads!

@hibiscus23 Don't you think this seems like a scene where they meet each other again - I know RJH is not meant to be in uniform outside of N. Korea but the fact that he's wearing such a pristine white top makes me think he has renounced his soldier life? This is me being hopeful. But if this is the last scene in the series I'll lose it. If this is the kind of open ended ending the writer-nim is looking for I better start learning Korean and write to her immediately. I miss watching HB, his character in secret garden was too arrogant, I really prefer him in this light where he's upright and morally righteous, would do anything to protect the person he loves. Kyah~ I cannot believe I'm still so hooked on kdrama, thought I would outgrow it by now aha!

Hmm, that seems out of character for RJH. His family means a lot to him. He gave up his piano future to go back to NK and join the military because his brother died. There was a comment made early on that either his brother or he would have had to go into the military because of his father's position, and that his brother had done it so that RJH could pursue the piano. It's not clear whether RJH joined the military because of his father's wishes or his own in trying to figure out why and how his brother died. Either way, it speaks to his character. He's been shown as a dutiful, loyal, and upstanding son. If he defects to the South, it will jeopardize his family in NK and he knows that.

Btw, with respect to joining the NK military, there is universal conscription in NK and for 10+ years for all men and a number of women, but the children of political elites are usually exempt from conscription. Having said that, because their father is a Defense Minister, they would have felt pressure to do their service. Speaking of which, RJH does not seem to have been in the military for very long.

Even by living in Switzerland, there are still some of the same issues, if RJH actually wanted to marry SR. It would be a high profile marriage, especially since SR comes from a chaebol background and he from a high ranking official's family. That would not be well received in NK, and have ramifications for RJH's family. Not to mention that eventually, RJH would be expected to return to NK to live with his wife.

I think the only way that I can really see a happy ending for the OTP is if the writer ends up writing a future reunification of the peninsula, or if RJH's whole family is forced to defect to SK along with him, or if SR gives up her life in SK to defect to NK to be with RJH.  This last ending of SR defecting to NK for love probably wouldn't prove very popular with the SK audiences, however.

Or I could be being too realistic about it. I suppose since it's fictional, the writer could just write that RJH ends up with SR with no consequences other than RJH being cut out of his family's life and history.

I find the beginning of this drama fun as SR and JH get to know each other and keep having to stay together despite SR wanting to go back and JH trying to get her back home. The scenes between JH and SR are cute, as are SR's interactions with JH's squad. However, this is a fish out of water drama about a SK princess-type being trapped in the world's most absolute and brutal totalitarian regime in the world. It's hard for me to think that from here on out, there is going to be a lot of angst, for the OTP but also for anyone who had been friendly with them or been helping them.

I have some mixed feelings about this drama, though I am totally in love with RJH, and so happy to be able to see HB in a drama again.

    Happy New Year, everybody!

I have to agree with you ~ I feel like the most possible ending would be a reunification. The writer seems to have hinted about it a few times (Seri's awards with redeeming them upon reunification, etc). I just don't think it would be in RJH's character to defect to the South. I also think it's unrealistic for Seri to give up her family and status in SK to remain in NK. I think either a reunification happy ending, or perhaps, they will reunite in Switzerland but you make solid points about their future marriage - I don't know if we will get that far. It might just be reuniting in Switzerland and starting their official relationship (if it hasn't been started already). I have mixed feelings. I think the bulk of the drama will still remain in NK as it makes sense for all the characters and eventually Seri will separate from RJH and return, but some type of reunification will happen - either with the peninsulas or our OTP in another country.

@stroppyse@m i s z CHEN I don't know you guys, I don't think reunification under the pen of a writer would proof to be that popular. Especially in this political climate, if anything they want to avoid anything controversial that may stir up the feelings of reunification. To oversimplify the idea of reunification for the guise of love is just too irresponsible,  and I don't know if that's the tone they want to take with this drama. I completely agree that there is no chance that Seri could ever defect for love, especially passing up the most important role in her life as the CEO of her father's company. I didn't watch Blue Legend, but if her writing is anything like - that idea of the couple is "us against the world" - I feel like it's RJH and Seri would meet in Switzerland every x amount of months as this is the only way they can be with each other.

Happy New Year everyone ~ Hope 2020 is the new roaring twenties with fills you with abundance of wealth, health and good fortune!

@yongwonhi4jfc First of woah thanks for sharing those cute photos, etc..I agree the way RJH remains very conservative as it is in NK he manages to keep his feelings for her which obviously he's very attractive to her and it's just amazing how he's over protective of her! I like the way the writer makes him innocent looking in some scenes if not naive in more ways than one! He's adorable & definitely fits this role!  I think SR is obviously jealous of RJH's fiancee! Yes I agree that was the only time he's raised his voice at her when she happens to meet this guy fr SK & we can tell there's jealousy in there as he pulls away SR's hand away from him by that elevator scene! LOL

@hibiscus23 I especially love the part when RJH found some hairgel in North Korea as he rode past! Haha, that was a nice change. Then in the next scene, his hair is down again. :)

I'm worried about the ratings as well, I only hope that TvN will release enough teasers and bts to hold the audiences' attention as we wait for 2 weeks.

  14. @hibiscus23 If only it was 20 episodes! I think we're just going to get another 10 more. It's been such a long time since I've watched a series where the lead man doesn't pull the female lead away as a guise of love. It's quite a violent act of "love" that is normalised in Korean dram. Obviously because of how conservative N. Korea is but also RJH's character isn't one that forces himself on another woman. The fact that he is always behind her, silently protecting her without her feeling repressed is a huge plus for me.

The only time he's ever raised his voice at her is when she insists on trusting another man over this guy who risked anything for her. How could this woman even compare the two - about to be married to this S. Korean and meeting him once again is nothing in what they have been through. The glee in SeRi's eyes says everything about how he finally reveals his true feelings.

RJH has the same feelings but he knows nothing comes from it by expressing them, he knows that she has a love for him that cannot be fulfilled. For her safety, he's willing to expedite his marriage, even if it's a short lived - forbidden love, he's willing to risk it all.

I'm looking forward to SeRi admitting her feelings whilst holding his hand whilst he lies unconscious in a hospital bed - your typical Kdrama troupe.

@Loveumore I have a bad feeling about SJ, the fact that he suggested to the villain to house another S. Korean makes me feel like he'll be using SeRi as a huge bargaining point and play off her brother and the North Korean villain. Also, can someone tell me how he managed to get such a huge gun out when he was threatening to shoot?

I'm sure there's a lot of you here who've seen DOTS - and liked it right? I must admit I started watching that while airing but for some strange reason/s albeit i'm a huge fan of SHK, after 2 episodes i quite i still dunno, then after a few months or so I thought of gg back to watch it and of course since I finished 2 epis, i'm now gg to start with epis 3 right? However, after a few scenes, I stopped again & up to now I haven't finished it, but with CLOY I just cldn't stop watching after seeing these two great actors fr epis 1!!!!! BTW i'm not saying DOTS was not good or whatever, i heard it made big and the awards they rec'vd were quite overwhelming but I still dunno why i stopped watching it! :(

@hibiscus23 I completely understand where you're coming from. I was a huge fan of SHK / SJG but for some reason I couldn't get into how they heighten / escalate / make a catastrophe of every situation. The eye-candy, the cinematography were all there but it wasn't captivating as CloY. Don't get me wrong, CLoY requires the viewers to suspense belief but the research done on the background and the context buffers and humanises the N. Korean situation that another users aptly put - that we all share common interests of wanting our kids to grow up well, hoping for the best for our family and working around the parameters of where the law lies and regulations dictates.

I know some viewers have stopped watching because they've found it "boring", but if the tone is not as serious or as steady as the one that they've used in CLoY it would completely crush the environment and the setting the writers have built.

Jung kept Soo's hairpin that she used once to protect him from So by threatening to kill herself if he entered Damiwon. It has become his treasure since. 'Foolish' for holding on to his unrequited love for many years; marry her and take care of her unconditionally even tho he knew he can never replace So in her heart.

    Just sad, really.

I thought it was along the lines of, but it looked like a chunk of wood. (LOL) I was expecting So to take their daughter back but I was so relieved to see at least Jung gets to be a father - whereas So is completely alone. That ending was a killer to my heart, my god I didn't expect it to be so painful.

  17. My god, I didn't even manage to get through 56 pages of thread without avoiding spoilers and the leaked version. I want to climb the thread to here but I don't wanna read more plot than I've watched.

    Spoiler

If they're adopting the WJ jealous of WS line then it seems like the C-BBJX is followed then? Sigh, I guess it's time to stock up on tissues.

Some C-fans think the moment WS took the throne, he's already changed his heart about HS and understands the necessity of giving her up. I suppose it's impossible for a King to do as he please without any repercussions - I mean look at Taejo and Lady Oh. His love for her had ever changed but he could only offer a place where she has no rank nor pleasures in the palace where the lovers are only able to look at each other at a distance. So close yet so far.

    But I have changed

I haven't even watched this episode yet - just seeing this screen cap tugs on my heart.

Ironically, this was the angst ending I wanted - but now I'm not sure my heart can take it - Slightly glad that SBS delayed an episode cause I don't have to courage to watch on how it spirals into devastating breakup.

BTW: Is it just me or some posts are being deleted? Cause the page numbers / posts keep moving for me?
