SBS’s “Lovers of the Red Sky” released a new behind-the-scenes video!

The making-of video begins with Kim Yoo Jung and Yang Hyun Min filming the scene at Wolseongdang. The two actors were doing fine until she made a mistake with a line. She apologizes and tries again, but she makes the same blooper. Despite her frustration, she keeps a smile on her face, and after many attempts, she finally succeeds!

Next, Ahn Hyo Seop films with Song Won Seok, who plays his private bodyguard. Before shooting, Ahn Hyo Seop does push-ups since he’ll be showing the upper half of his body. The actor rehearses a fighting scene with his co-star and perfectly pulls off the stunts during filming. Then later, the two actors shoot the moment where Ahn Hyo Seop tells Song Won Seok what to do next. Song Won Seok bows and walks away, and Ahn Hyo Seop jokingly snaps, “I’m not done talking yet!” Everyone bursts into laughter, and Ahn Hyo Seop smiles in response.

The video also shows Gong Myung and Go Kyu Pil’s chemistry in the scene where they lightheartedly squabble while Gong Myung is on a horse. They finish the scene without any hiccups, and once the “cut” sign is given, they both thank the horse. Go Kyu Pil praises it, saying, “You were really good,” and Gong Myung gently caresses it.

Lastly, there’s Kwak Si Yang. Although he’s the villain in the drama, he’s nothing but sweet on the drama set as he expresses concern for Kim Yoo Jung and Ahn Hyo Seop. Once they go into filming, Kwak Si Yang fully immerses into his character. However, he has a hard time with the bow and arrow, and when the staff members flock around him, he is quick to reassure them. Despite the cold weather, Kwak Si Yang is full of passion to do his best.

My shortest Review

A ) A bit confusing for me, also somehow Viki and Viu subs are different so the meaning threw me off for CLimax of Ep 2 (The Yin/Yang energy and Dongzhi<winter Solistice> festival)

B ) Nice CGI

C) Like the premise and Ahn Hyo Seop woah....can't believe its the same kid from Still 17 lol.

D) The only thing is I like the Song by Baekhyung, but can Saeguk Kdramas try Some Traditional style music and not Modern ones, just kills the entire mood when episode ends IMO

I don't think we have gotten a full explanation of why Ma Wang is trapped inside Ha Ram.. It could be that Ma Wang wanted to kill Ha Ram and that Sam Shin took the opportunity to seal him inside Ha Ram. Or he wanted to reside inside of Ha Ram and Sam Shin gave his eyes to Cheon Gi too take away Ma Wang's powers.

@PororoQueenIn Korean Legends as twisted by Kdramas usually, Butterfly symbolizes Protection from Evil spirit or some sort of God or their protection armour. Sam Shin was the one to trap MA WANg the demon in the Painting of the Grandpa King, Ma wang when released by the Grand prince (he was the oldest born , but crown prince is his middle brother so He has EVIL HEART like his grandfather so he was the being who responded to evil Ma wang's call and ended up releasing him), Mwang's first intention was to search for SAM Shin and take revenge in that phase he found a symbol of BUTTERFLY and knew the person owning it is either SAM SHIN or the GOD's Chosen Puppet, so Ma Wang took over Ha Ram to KILL HIM ,bUT THEN  Butterfly amulet got activated wOKE uP SAM SHIN  and then she  trapped ma wang there by taking away his eyes that is his main power (Demon MA WANG made Chun Gi's dad the Royal Painter Mad because they made eye contact) , so now Demon is trapped inside the Chosen Puppet by goddess Sam Shin, now Sam shin gave the same eyes (Now demon activated) to Chung Gi and asked her to create the Demon Vessel because she is the DESTINED Kid to Protect the World of Saeguk Korea. Chun Gi is a painter, my 2 cents she will crete the painting to trap Ma wang again and then should die , also Ha Ram will die, because technically he almost did but Goddess SAM sHIN Saved him to save Chun Gi who is the ultimate World Saver.

Here if you paid slight attention to the first 5 minutes, Chun Gi should be the God of balance who was killed by Demon due to Their Lust for power, the demon wanted to control every existing thing and Balance God's job was to maintain Life death balance.

Hope that explains something.

Ahn Hyo Seop And Kim Yoo Jung Name 3 Things To Look Forward To In “Lovers Of The Red Sky”

by M. Kang | Sep 4, 2021

spacer.png

SBS’s new drama “Lovers of the Red Sky” has had a great start to its run, with the latest episode reaching average nationwide ratings of 8.8 percent.

The historical fantasy drama stars Kim Yoo Jung as painter Hong Chun Gi, who was born blind but miraculously regains her sight, and Ahn Hyo Seop as blind astrologer Ha Ram, who is able to read the stars despite losing his sight.

In the recent episode, the story transitioned from the past to the present and will continue to follow Hong Chun Gi and Ha Ram’s journeys. The two actors shared what viewers can look forward to as the plot thickens.

spacer.png

A mystical fairytale

“Lovers of the Red Sky” is set in a fictional time period where ghosts, devils, and spirits meddled in the world of humans. In this unique setting, there exists a ritual where the spirit of the god of death is transfixed inside a portrait. A curse binds the children cursed by the god of death together. In this case, Hong Chun Gi, the daughter of the artist that painted the portrait, is bound to Ha Ram, the son of the priest that held the ritual. Ha Ram was born with the god of death bound to him and as a result lost his sight and has red eyes. Hong Chun Gi gains her sight through the mystical connection she has with Ha Ram. Their romance begins as they try to figure out what this connection exactly entails.

Complementary cinematography and music

“Lovers of the Red Sky” embodies the genres of fantasy, romance, and historical. Each scene is carefully orchestrated to bring out the best of all these factors, such as the beautiful and dreamy scene where Hong Chun Gi and Ha Ram make memories playing among peach blossoms. Another meticulously crafted scene introduces Hong Chun Gi as a genius artist. The imaginative appearance of the god of death adds suspense to the story while the depiction of life inside the palace keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.

The music of the drama helps viewers fall deeper into the world of Hong Chun Gi and Ha Ram. One such song is Baekhyun’s OST “Is it me?” “Lovers of the Red Sky” director Jang Tae Yoo is an established figure in the scene and his collaboration with music director Jeon Chang Yeob is expected to bring about more synergy.

Ahn Hyo Seop and Kim Yoo Jung’s chemistry

Kim Yoo Jung’s previous historical dramas “The Moon Embracing the Sun” and “Love in the Moonlight” performed well and her interpretation of Hong Chun Gi’s character as a bold and genius artist is set to continue the pattern. Ahn Hyo Seop has put forth a performance of Ha Ram so believable that it’s hard to believe he is the same actor from “Dr. Romantic 2.” Even within “Lovers of the Red Sky,” he switches flawlessly between red-eyed Ha Ram, revenge-driven Il Wol Sung, and the dark god of death. The two actors’ chemistry captivated viewers in episodes thus far and it is expected to continue through the plot.

Ahn Hyo Seop and Kim Yoo Jung pointed out that the drama is most appealing because it gives the viewer an experience of watching a fairytale. Ahn Hyo Seop added, “From fated love to factors of fantasy and tension surrounding the throne, there are lots to see. Please look forward to the fairytale that’ll come to you this fall.”

Kim Yoo Jung commented, “I suggest that when you watch ‘Lovers of the Red Sky,’ you watch it as if you’re immersed in reading a fun fairytale. There are also many artistic scenes with Hong Chun Gi and Ha Ram, so I hope you will check them out through the broadcast.”

“Lovers of the Red Sky” airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 10 p.m. KST.

Here's everything I loved about the premiere of 'Lovers of the Red Sky'

By AKP Staff Nyx-Elias

spacer.png

Kim Yoo Jung and Ahn Hyo Seop's 'Lovers of the Red Sky' has officially premiered, and it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that this is unlike anything we've ever seen before. Mixing fact and fiction, this drama tells the story of a female painter, Hong Cheon Gi, who finds her fate intertwined with Ha Ram's in a twisted ploy of destiny. It is implied right at the beginning of the narrative that things must fall apart for Cheon Gi and Ha Ram for the center to hold.

Spoiler Alert!

The tragic import of the central story is posited before we're even introduced to the characters. This is the drama's way of telling us that we should not be mistaken about this being just a simple, timeless love story. Fate, Time, and Life are personified through the figure of the "Samshin" or the three Goddesses of birth, death, and the balance between the two, giving us an omniscient perspective on the events that unfold where we are to believe that everything happens for a reason. However, as with every drama we've seen before that features Samshin or the Divine in some form or another, like 'Goblin,' it almost never bodes well for our main characters.

spacer.png

The drama's narrative structure is designed so that it gives us the ending before the beginning. After demonic anarchy is let loose upon the world, a young woman who had lost her lover creates a painting that seals the evil within it. Ultimately, the woman disappears. Presumably, this woman is Cheon Gi, the chosen one who must save the world. Despite the knowledge of an ending that sounds futile on the surface, especially since both the primary agents of the story seemingly cease to exist, we are drawn into the tale regardless.

Spoiler

spacer.png

Each episode is packed with information, and there's not a moment to spare. Cheon Gi and Ha Ram's relationship is seen developing quickly yet with sincerity even though they are children. Admittedly, however, it was a tad bit unsettling to see their affection manifest itself through a kiss. Besides that, child actors Lee Nam Gyeong (young Cheon Gi) and Choi Seung Hoon (young Ha Ram) do a brilliant job at setting up the story of our star-crossed lovers in the very first episode.

Spoiler

spacer.png

At 28 years old, Cheon Gi is ethereally gorgeous, and Ha Ram is irresistibly handsome. Kim Yoo Jung and Ahn Hyo Seop look like they walked right out of a manhwa, and their chemistry is electric, to say the least. Ha Ram's memories are gone, but they're awakened in Cheon Gi's presence, just as Samshin predicted. The plot is starting to get clearer, but we're far from being out of the woods.

spacer.png

From characters that are intricately designed and developed to conflicts that extend beyond the limits of our dimension, "Lovers of the Red Sky" is the type of drama that comes around once in a blue moon. As a matter of fact, it might just be one of the best sageuk dramas we've had in a very long time.

Overall, if we excuse the CGI, everything about this drama screams perfection. Much like Shakespearean tragedies, this story will make your heartache, but you still won't find yourself looking away. After all, if K-Drama logic is anything to go by, fate doesn't stand a chance in front of true love.

Childhood Connections, Gods, And Demons: First Impressions Of “Lovers Of The Red Sky”

by shalini | Sep 4, 2021

spacer.png

Kim Yoo Jung is back! “Lovers of the Red Sky” has been teased since December of last year, and SBS’s newest sageuk fantasy is finally on our screens. The first two episodes pack in fated lovers, bloodshed, gods, demons, and the reoccurring theme of sight and sightlessness. But is it worth the hype? Here are our thoughts on the premiere!

Warning: spoilers for episodes 1-2 below

Loved: The lore

spacer.png

The drama starts off in true sageuk fashion, weaving a fantastical tale of three gods that used to be one: Samshin, the goddess of Life (Moon Sook), Mawang or the devil, and the god who balanced both. The animation here is stunning, detailing how this harmonious balance fell apart when the devil ate the god of balance. This is a neat founding myth for the show and posits every battle henceforth as one between life and death, not necessarily good and evil.

spacer.png

The nuance here is interesting because King Yeongjeong (Jeon Kuk Hwang), who brings about this entire state of affairs, does so because he used the devil’s power to butcher his opposition and rise to power. However, once his reign is assured, he no longer has use for the devil. Thus, it is sealed away in a painting of the King on a night where everything changes for two families. This seems to posit that evil is almost necessary at times but must be imprisoned before it can go too far. One can only hope the show pursues such a nuanced line of thinking.

Loved: The tight childhood storyline

Spoiler

spacer.png

A show that posits the main couple as meant to be always has a tough job ahead of it because it has to explain to the audience why it’s these two and no other. This job gets even tougher when there’s a childhood connection involved because the weight of selling chemistry and fate falls on the child actors. “Lovers of the Red Sky” accomplishes this through tight writing and the metaphor of sight and sightlessness.

Spoiler

spacer.png

Hong Chun Gi (Kim Yoo Jung) is inadvertently blinded due to a ritual performed by Ha Ram’s  (Ahn Hyo Seop) father when sealing the devil into a painting of King Yeongjeong. It is this ritual which results in the devil cursing Joseon to suffer drought and famine. This, in turn, puts Ha Ram in the position of having to be a human sacrifice for the gods to bring rain, and it is that sacrifice which results in Ha Ram and Hong Chun Gi falling into the same lake at the same time where Samshin binds their fates together once more by giving Haram’s sight to Chun Gi.

Every event flows logically from the other. Thus, while the child actors are cute together, and the drama makes the smart decision of hinting at a kiss instead of making the children do so, it is the writing that posits them as meant to be.

Loved: The hints at what is to come

Spoiler

spacer.png

spacer.png

There’s so much foreshadowing in these initial episodes! Samshin tells the devil that she’ll restrict his power by giving Chun Gi Haram’s sight but that everything will go back to its place. This means that Chun Gi might go blind in the future, which would cripple her as a painter. It makes for conflict in the love line between her and Haram, because can he really afford to fall in love with the girl whose sight he’ll take?

Spoiler

spacer.png

And there’s more! Before his death, King Yeongjeong says the devil cannot be killed and can only be sealed. Now that Grand Prince Juhyang (Kwak Si Yang) has unleashed the devil upon the world, and it’s only temporarily stuck in Haram, it’s apparent that the only way to get rid of it is to seal it. And the only way to seal it is to have a brilliant artist draw a life-like portrait of the possessed person, like Hong Eun O (Choi Kwang Il), Chun Gi’s father. Given Hong Chun GI’s incredible talent at painting, it is evident that she has a vital part to play in ridding Joseon of the devil. The drama gives away some of what is to come by telling us at the last of a young woman who seals away the devil in a painting after losing her lover, then vanishes. But is this our ending, or just before it?

Speaking of the devil, something appears to have happened post-ritual where a blind Haram and his family were attacked by the former head Shaman Mi Soo’s (Chae Gook Hee) loyal goons. Haram seems to have lived waiting for revenge for the day’s events. But who are his intended targets? And why has he chosen to live as a spymaster? Only time will tell!

Hated: some of the CG

The animation at the start of the first episode was amazing, and the devil looked terrifying, but then things started to look spotty towards the end of the episode. The swirls of golden light around Samshin and the intense dark clouds around Ha Ram are pretty disappointing graphics for 2021. It’s a bit sad as the rest of the cinematography, the painting, and the color palette are all quite lovely.

Spoiler

spacer.png

Worse, Ahn Hyo Seop in demon form looks, interesting to say the least. A defining feature of all sageuk heroes is their stunning mane of glory, like Lee Jun Ki in “Illjimae” and Yoo Ah In in “Sungkyunkwan Scandal”. Poor Ahn Hyo Seob, on the other hand, looks like someone glued a bad weave or a broom to his head! But the acting more than makes up for it!

Spoiler

spacer.png

We still don’t know all that much about the characters. Despite the drama’s Korean title being “Hong Chun Gi,” it feels like we’ve spent a lot more time with Ha Ram. Hopefully the show’s focus shifts to her soon! Playboy prince Yangmyung (Gong Myung) makes a brief appearance, but there’s much to learn of his character. Kwak Si Yang is back as a villain for what feels like the umpteenth time, but he does do it well! Here’s to next week establishing character relationships solidly and getting us into the political and fantastical battles between devil and human, prince and king, and greed and perseverance!

@Mymindisblank I’m pretty sure the drama is 16 episodes!

also when I look at the photos for the drama, it looks like Ahn Hyo Seop’s eyes aren’t red…Is his red eyes done by CGI? :o I know usually actors wear contact lens but I feel like in all the photos I’ve seen, I don’t see the red eyes

Kim Yoo Jung Is Frozen In Place As Danger Approaches + Gong Myung Appears As The Romantic Troublemaker Prince

by C. Hong | Sep 5, 2021

SBS’s “Lovers of the Red Sky” has released new stills ahead of the upcoming episode.

“Lovers of the Red Sky” is a fantasy historical drama about the world of humans caught between demons, evil forces, and gods. Kim Yoo Jung stars as Hong Chun Gi, the Joseon Dynasty’s only female painter, and Ahn Hyo Seop stars as Ha Ram, a blind astrologer.

Spoilers

Hong Chun Gi and Ha Ram have been connected by fate since they were children. Ha Ram lost his sight and his eyes turned red when Ma Wang, the god of death, was sealed inside him. To rob Ma Wang of his powers, Ha Ram’s eyesight was given to Hong Chun Gi instead, who was born blind. Now, Ma Wang is on the hunt for Hong Chun Gi in order to take his eyes back from her.

In the new stills, Hong Chun Gi walks alone in the dark woods with only a lantern to guide her steps. As if she senses a presence around her, she stops and stares off into the distance as Ma Wang’s hand reaches out for her face.

spacer.png

spacer.png

The production staff stated, “As Hong Chun Gi is thrown into imminent danger, Ma Wang’s appearance will create waves in the story. Please look forward to the combination of thrilling suspense and fantasy scenes.”

SBS also previewed some stills of Gong Myung, who plays Prince Yangmyeong. He is a romantic at heart and cultivates his love for art, unlike the more ambitious Prince Joohyang (played by Kwak Si Yang). He first made his appearance in episode 2 and made an impression with his free-and-easy, optimistic personality, describing himself as the “beautiful prince.” He will begin to be intertwined with Ha Ram and Hong Chun Gi’s story starting in episode 3.

In the stills, Prince Yangmyeong shows both his love for culture, as evidenced by his carrying various books, but also his penchant for getting into trouble. He causes chaos around him as he worries over his ripped clothes, even though he is actually dressed as his steward Go Pil (Go Kyu Pil). As he is friends with Ha Ram and connected to Hong Chun Gi through their mutual love for art, it is inevitable that he will get caught up in their stormy fate.

spacer.png

The production staff stated, “Gong Myung will add depth to the storyline as he becomes more connected to Ahn Hyo Seop and Kim Yoo Jung. Prince Yangmyeong makes viewers smile whenever he appears on screen, so please look forward to the unique chemistry he will have with Hong Chun Gi and Ha Ram and the energy he brings to the drama.”

Episode 3 of “Lovers of the Red Sky” will air on September 6 at 10 p.m. KST.

Episode 3 was definitely a slow episode, kind of setting up the fate between our two leads and reintroducing them to each other, but I’m sure episode 4 we will pick up the pace!

Anyone else really looking forward to our two leads figuring out that they knew each other when they were kids? Ha Ram does say that Hong Cheon Ki has the same name as the girl he met when he was younger, but not sure if he'll realize that it's her. I'm also really loving the interactions between Ha Ram and Hong Cheon Ki. The scene when Ha Ram asked if Hong Cheon Ki's name is "Hong Hong Hong" got me laughing :loolz:

We do learn that if Ha Ram dies then Ma Wang is released so Hong Cheon Ki has to create some bowl or painting to seal Ma Wang in and she'll make that in time.. Seems like Sam Shin really has her hand in this destiny and fate with Ha Ram and Hong Cheon Ki and making sure that Ma Wang is sealed for good through this. I'm just hoping that none of them die by the end of the drama..

Anyways I'm just waiting for Episode 4 to see more action to happen. If there's one scene I'm looking forward to that we saw in the highlight, it's this one:

The way Ha Ram uses his hands to find Hong Cheon Ki's lips

And then goes for the kiss

Me: Patiently waiting for this scene to happen in the drama
