[Drama 2017] My Sassy Girl 엽기적인 그녀

Everyday the drama gets better and better.. Today's episode was really good.. The story is thickening and so is the relationship of our lead.

While there are all sorts of conspiracy going on against princess and royal family, I love how the King's mother is so forgiving of princess. She understands that princess is being careless more because of her loneliness..King is protective of princess and forgiving to some extent. But I do hope King will not misunderstand Officer Kang when he is loyal. He is one of the few people who are loyal to king. King must learn from his past mistake of believing in conspiracy and rumor. May be he will remove Officer Kang just to use him as spy!!

And while our leads are getting closer but bickering all the time, they now have their first shipper....... LITTLE Cute Wanja. He seemed very happy at the thought of his Master being interested in his sister! He He he.. so cute.

finally the pretty lantern scenes. They will be good cover photos. :D

I will eagerly wait for the next week's episodes. :)

I do not know why many people dislike this drama. For me it is my first time in a historical drama (if I do not count Queen in Hyun's Man) and usually I hate this kind of drama (what is very ironic because I love history and I study Internation Relations, a course where you need to KNOW very well history and politics) because they all end up in tragedic and for me it is very sad and because of what I study, I just cannot take more tragedies when I want to just "relax". But this one, I think is more comedy and I do not think we will have a tragidic end hmm.

Thank you for taking time here to share here @Ana Paula Cionci. Nice to have different opinions and you have an interesting viewpoint.  Your name suggests you're an Italian ? Interesting course you're studying. It's true tragic events weigh us down and we become burdened. Conspiracies do not bring peace either. Yes My Sassy Girl is a rom com based on an earlier drama of the same name and which was a hit ( about 10 years ago I think ? ) It's light hearted fiction and not a tragedy so it's relaxing for that feel good factor.

Other thing I am very sad about, is the fact that many people hates the Princess (complaining that it is very unfaithful to history). Well, first of all, this is a drama. They do not need to be 100% faithful to reality, if you want some drama that is based on "history" I can recommend Queen for Seven Days, because THIS ONE need to be very faithful. Second, the drama itself talks about a girl who is "sassy" it does not make sense if she was not rebel (at least). And third, some messages that the drama is giving us is AMAZING. I mean, the part where the princess says that she does not want to be the possession of a man and she wants more than just "marry". For me is the best! Because somehow, I think Koreans are trying to say: stop using women as rugs for a man to walk. And for me that is amazing, because it is a great change in koreans culture. And do not take me wrong, I really like koreans culture, but it is very sad when they are developped in many aspects, but they still so old-fashioned about women (and that is extremelly bad if you compared them to Japan and China, where you usually see many T-Dramas where the woman is the boss or have a great position).

I watched 2 episodes of Queen for Seven Days and I felt so wretched after the King displayed his jealously and began a course of tyranny against his half brother and other relatives that I bolted through the door. It borders on evil and the dark side. Gives me nightmares. I think this drama is half historical facts and fiction on the other.

MSG is so delightful to watch with a wonderful choreography well set out by the producer and the crew . Also there are 2 top class actor / actress who deliver their roles well.

I agree with you about the Princess saying that she doesn't want to be the possession of man and wants more than the traditional role of marriage. This message is relatable to the modern women. Princess HM is certainly an unusual character .... way out of the Joseon league. She's more the modern woman but it's hammered to us that women in any era have individualism and and brains and they certainly can exercise them. I don't like the word bizarre , rather I think she's a liberated miss and that frees her to be her own person resulting in outrageous behaviour.

Yes Asian culture is still conservative but women are making breakthroughs in women equality.

Just watched episode 4 with subs.

PD just threw in a mixture of the funnies with the darker palace intrigue.

THE ABRASIVE OTP..... still in denial about their true feelings which are still buried deep in their psyche ... just waiting for the catalyst to happen. Should explode once the jealous rival starts her move.

A BED SCENE THAT IS NOT A BED SCENE......... !! What does GW expect after reading porn...... hahaha.

A DATING GAME ....... OMG.... did the PD have to make fun of GW by presenting the ugliest girls ever.... really!!!  a snorting girl, a motherly girl, a sexual maniac .. !! The equation is not balanced...rich equals ugly? A parody on ambitious parents hoping to catch the rich fish ?  I guess it's to bring out the fact that eventually the Princess is the real deal..... wealthy, noble birth and beautiful ad she's already captured his heart.

OFFICER KANG IN DANGER....... he's being compromised. Leave him alone you fiends.

SOME PRETTY SCENES...... the lanterns floating across the sky.... so beautiful.

Thanks @flutterby06 for the pix.

The princess in the outdoor pavilion ( not sure what's it called ) The scene is just lovely. ( no pix yet )

AND WHO IS THE GOSSIP MONGER ON THE BRIDGE? He was the one who set up the human " printing Press " in some shady backroom and got thugs to create chaos. They are conspiring treason . Is GW a match for them. Indeed I want GW to show his superior intelligence  for once instead on getting revenge.

Almost right, actually I am Brazilian, but my family is Italian (just my father and mother were born in Brazil). I just think that we need something that gives us hope for the future, because nowadays everything is so hopless. And, yes, My Sassy Girl is based on a famous film that had many versions around the world hmm.
I did not watch QFSD yet, I do not have the courage (although I did recommend the drama to my friend). And actually I do not like when the drama takes half historical facts and fiction. I mean, it's good when you do the novel in a second war (for example) but it's not so good when you use the famous name to do this. I think it is very dangerous, and they are usually unfaitfull with reality and gave us false hope (like Anastasia, a film that I loved as a child, but made me very sad when I discovered the history behind the name).

Well, it's my first time seeing the actors rs.
I think people misunderstand the women in history (well, can not blame them, because history fu*** women.) We have many examples of women who are Not like they show us in dramas (virgins, saints, calm ...). Of course, that was the main goal of society and many were like that. But as  nowadays, there were many who did not follow the rules.

Just watched the first 4 episodes.

Here are what I like about the drama:

  • When the scriptwriter is making parody of modern things, like Hallyu
  • The costumes, which have a refreshing color palette when compared to most of the sageuks (despite being historical wrong about the Qing emperor's clothing)
  • The acting of the leads (their acting is IMPECCABLE) and others

But I understand why the ratings are not satisfactory. The main storyline is predictable, the script is trying hard to be funny but sometimes not so. But it is a still light-hearted rom com that is relaxing for me, so I gonna stick to it for now.

One historical note for those who don't know though: marrying a princess was NOT desirable during Chosun era for nobility, since those clans could not have their members being government officials after the marriage.

This rule was set to prevent these clans from controlling the government, but it made any family who want make a name (obtaining "family glory" was an important matter for clans in older societies) in politics/ history stepping away from such a marriage.

That is why the king did not want talent such as GW to be a candidate as the princess' husband at the first place, for he (and his father) would not be able to work for the government after the marriage. Princess' husband would only receive a wage from the government with an honorary noble title.

However, rich business families (which were not nobility, and often got looked down upon for scholar-officials had a higher social status while businessmen were just commoners, no matter how rich they were) and noble families with untalented offsprings would be eager for such a marriage. Though I am no Chosun history expert (and I doubt Chosun official history would record much on princesses' marriages in details since it was a patriarchal society) I can image bribery happened to make male candidates more desirable than they seemed and princesses ended up being unhappy in a unsatisfactory marriage.

Last week, I was very nervous before the first review on MSG was posted in dramabeans page. I think their reviews will affect how international drama fans view the drama too, given how popular the site is. Thankfully the reviews in dramabeans have been positive so far.

Ep 5 & 6 Review by dramallama

http://www.dramabeans.com/2017/06/my-sassy-girl-episodes-5-6/

I'm looking forward to next episode! Waiting to see if the princess' ex-bf is dead or still alive and working for Minister Jung (my guess - this needs to happen so that her heart will have room for our Gyun Woo right??) and Choon Poong playing a more interesting role in our couple's love story (I hope he has hidden agenda and is just pretending to flirt with the gisaengs). Plus more of these please...

- more funny facial expressions from Gyun Woo

- jealous Gyun Woo

- arrogant Gyun Woo realizing he is in love when Princess is in trouble

- more fighting scenes with Gyun Woo

- cutie prince (Princess' brother) playing cupid

Thanks to the drama being pre-produced, I can catch the subbed drama live from local cable channel. I think this is one of the best gifts from JW to international fans like me who hate to wait for subbed drama. A pity international views will not contribute to the ratings in Korea. Although I'm pretty sad to see news headlines on the other KBS drama breaking rating records, I hope JW isn't affected by the ratings and know that many fans enjoy the drama.

@lavender2love I'm honored you remember me! Thank you for making this thread fun and lively with your viewpoints. Pls know I'm reading and loving your posts even when I'm not posting  :)

@lavender2love, you are most welcome. :)

@sagaseed, my concern exactly. Only if MSG editing team had done a better job in arranging the first episode..sigh. Still the negativity of K-netz towards this drama is unfair. It is becoming more and more entertaining in each episode. It would be great if the rating rises but I hope Joo Won is not worrying by himself all alone.. It can be quite upsetting situation for him knowing people are being bitter towards his show and he can do nothing about it now that he is performing his military duty. He should know that a lot of people are actually enjoying this show specially his national and international fans who care less about rating if they get to see good things from him.

@000231846597 ....Well said. I like your viewpoint about why you like the drama.

I also read with interest about the historical fact that it is NOT desirable to marry a princess. ( but it is considered a catch when a girl marries a prince ? ) This insight into the code of marriage is absorbing. Than you ( sorry I had to cut short your article ..... I just want to make sure I don't infringe a rule. )

Doesn't MCW look like KTH and Vice versa?

Yes.......... one can breathe better and feel the sunshine hotter if the review gets the nod as DB sets the tone for brickbats or bouquets.

So glad there's no battle to wage there for MSG since the drama is seen in a more favourable light. Sometimes when there is negative bias towards the drama like ferreting for " plot holes " or faulting an actor/ actress,   you'll need earplugs for the noise or a battering ram to break down their prejudices.

My sentiments too . We need to see the ex lover dead ( the ring he gave her is exquisite though ). How about GW parkouring over rooftops and trees in " ninja" black for mystery and to kick a****? Preferably with superior archery skills....... zing and a nasty minister drops dead with a bloody thud.

Awwww ..... kissing scenes too . No no no ......... that's not right. JW is attached ....so I rather see him doing pecks....cute little pecks.... for my sanity. His last fantastic kisses were with Yeo Jin on Windy Hill ( ring a bell ? ) so we'll just say au revoir to hot scenes.

I think it's poor timing that he has to be listed after the drama and suffers such a low profile .That means a loss of promotional press meetings, appearances in variety shows, singing performances, fan meetings, V App, twittering etc etc to keep his drama in the spotlight.

I'm sad .....

and mad ....... JW is so deserving.

Hello everyone, glad I have company of people who love the drama. One thing that excites me is the mention of Banchon Village. As everyone who watched SFD or TWDR know about Banchon village where no government forces can enter the village even if they were chasing a criminal who entered the village. So the flyer distributors and writers must be hiding in that village. That really  peaked my interest and my curiosity about the jade ring giver possible boyfriend of the Princess. This drama is getting better and better. In the end I think the sassy Princess will end up doing something great for her country or at least for her family. This drama is funny but now there maybe serious stuff cooking along the way. This is one drama that makes me welcome Mondays......

Well if the lady was not from noble class, marrying a prince might not be a good thing either, since she was deemed to be a concubine.
Chosun era ruled that any child would inherit the class of his/ her mother but not his/ her father.
If the lady was from commoner or untouchable class, often times her kids would be liken to servants to the noble family....
(In some luckier cases they might be adopted by the noble wives and obtained noble class in some TV dramas, but not sure how often it was the case in reality.
If the lady was from middle class, the male kids might get good education and became minor government officials).

Meanwhile, no one from noble class was willing to let their main children descend to the lower class. The main wife was 99.99% marriage of convenience, including the king's one, that is, the Queen.

Thank you for this eye-opener. Wow .... you are well versed. I enjoyed reading what you shared .

Having been fed on staples like Cinderella, Snow White and others, our brains are mushy with joy when the usually dirt poor little mistreated girl get a huge heave-ho to the upper crust royalty or nobility without the down grading of her children. Just look at modern times Kate Middleton, a commoner whose marriage to Prince William did not take away the titles from her children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. ( Of course she will never be made queen and still is a lower rung to the true blue royal stock.)

Imagine the lowly Joseon ladies disconcertment.... no wonder their lives were often bitter, filled with hate, malicious back biting and evil scheming, at least from drama point of view.

Oh .....just for fun. If GW cannot be a government official , he can be a fashionable trend setter and a famous dog breeder of pedigrees with the highest lineage... haha

I just watched this week's episodes.

And they were good, and the romance was great, but...

I really hated watching all the consequences of what our princess did. It left a bitter taste in my mouth.

And the taste became way worse after watching the preview where she goes out of the palace again.

I don't get how could she be so careless towards the others. This time GW got hurt, the servants got punished, officer Kang got dismissed. I understand and agree with all the feminist comments, however getting out of the palace after all that happened shows her to be a spoiled selfish person.

Maybe next time someone will die while trying to protect her. What then? Will she wait 2 days and then go out again like some idiot :(

This is selfishness 101. And I don't agree or like it.

Oh @glee77..... cheer up .

All the bad things princess did are just the preclude to her transformation.

GW is the man who will tame her ....

With this kiss ....... voila !!! Princess , though still exuberant, will mature in a woman of substance.

See her eyes ? All closed and tender..... !!
