@ChristineH: I translated the OTP scenes from ep 13-19 (the ones not yet out or subbed on viki) here: https://mydramalist.com/28037-emperor-phoenix?r=notif&_nid=52375305#comment-5052103 :) Enjoy!

Thanks for taking the time to summarize those episodes. I just finished watching the raw episodes up to 18. I noticed the annoying third prince trying to grab, distract and entice A’Wu away even while she’s tending to the people. I’m so glad XQ showed up in time to rescue them from the attack. Love how A’Wu ran to him and hugged him.

    Ep 12

I love the way Xiao Qi telling the truth and comforting Awu. Not a lipservice and nonsense talk.

He praise and encourage her at the same time.

His posture, his voice, his words, his reaction. Like Awu is his world. No wonder Awu called him back and hugged him with no hesitation.

In fact, i love the way Xiao Qi treat Awu from the first time they met

I love this scene. Actually, what surprised me is that he told her that she has to be strong now as they face life and death together while he wiped her tears away. Another man might have wanted to keep her pampered and sheltered. After he tells her this, she nods and he hugs her again.

I also like how he tells her not to hide behind her Wang family anymore. I think the Wang, Xie, Xu and other noble families are trouble. Let them kill each other fighting for power. I support none of them. The only people I support are Xiao Qi and A’Wu. I like A’wu’s mom and brother but unfortunately they can’t escape the Wang or royal family connections.

By the way, it’s so yucky that A’wu’s brother’s wife is actually sleeping regularly with the second prince. Next thing she gets pregnant and passes it off as her husband’s if his father keeps forcing him to pay attention to her. Then he’ll be like the emperor who actually thinks the second prince is his son when he’s not. I honestly can’t wait to see the second prince fail. I naturally don’t like him. Maybe because he seems to have a slimy character. So, the crown prince is a dummy, the second prince a snake and the third prince a coward. All pretty lame in some way or another.

  3. @bomnie, I found Xiao Qi smoldering hot from the beginning. As a matter of fact, I don’t know any of these actors but just one look at this man with long hair that suits him, drew me to watch the show. lol The other guy who kidnaps her looks good too, objectively speaking, even if his character creeps me out in a real way because of his actions.

@hush puppy, I’m so very curious to watch the subbed episode 12. I really want to hear all that Xiao Qi revealed to A’Wu about her dad’s schemes and basically the way he used her as a pawn to attempt to get his hands on Xiao Qi’s military power. Thanks to you I know what he will say though.

@DramaLover, I can’t really comment on whether the romantic progress was fast because episodes 12 and above haven’t been released on Viki yet? Personally I think that once Xiao Qi told A’Wu the truth and she accepted it, all she needed to do now was to let go of the past. That stupid third prince made her wait all night for him in the rain and didn’t show up. A’Wu has probably long realized that their fate has ended. In fact, she even ordered her maid to burn the letter the third prince sent her. She probably had lingering feelings but she knows she’s a married woman now and she needs to put an end to those feelings. I think since she’s getting to know her husband better and they’ve cleared up their misunderstandings, it’s not hard to believe that she’s more open to her husband now because the reality is, he’s the person she has to spend her life with now. If he treats her respectfully, considerately and affectionately, I don’t see what’s to stop her from opening her heart to the man who will be her lifelong partner. I actually think this kind of relationship is nice too. When two people who weren’t in love marry, as was the custom in those days, and through mutual respect grow to love each other.

  4. @minglanfan2, Story of Ming Lan is a huge favorite of mines. :D I also believe that Xiao Qi probably values the peace of the people more than getting involved in deadly political intrigues for personal gain. Unfortunately, since he commands an army, it’s inescapable that he will be drawn into political intrigues. He has already started to be targeted too so he will most likely come to that point where he is forced to enter the political fight to preserve his life, family and men.

I could only watch until ep 9 because of eng sub.

I so hate Helan Zhen because of he humiliates Princess Wang Xuan. I can understand men's ambition and revenge. But I could not tolerate if a man rappes a wife of someone just because of he wants to get his revenge to her husband. He is as low as an animal for me. :rage:

And the king is a selfish man. Just like any other king in cdramas. I am a bit happy (just a bit) because of prime minister Wang poisoned him.

I hope Wang Clan and general Xiao Qi can work together to save Princess Wang Xuan.

Your writings make me can't wait to watch more eps @hush puppy :o

I agree. This drama needs an actress with good acting quality. I don't remember if we have any young actress with impressive acting quality like Zhang Zi Yi when she was on her 20s (Memoir of a Geisha era). This is not just a melancoly romantic drama. This is a drama with complete plots and intriques. Political plots, tactic and strategy, affairs, wars, revenges, and romance.

I understand your feelings. As a female, I hate rape and sexual assault in any form. It really turns me off of a character. I hope that there aren’t any more scenes like those because I was honestly shocked when I saw that kind of stuff happening to the female lead. Usually women of her status are at home and/or surrounded by attendants. However, I suppose A’Wu will not be a normal woman of her times but she should at least have a female guard or something.

@hush puppythanks for all the background information you provided. That almost-rapist guy seem to have more to him. Maybe my mind will change about him but it still says something about his character that he would try raping a woman. So low. If he has something against a man, how about dealing with the man directly.

  6. @hush puppy, I wish I could discuss this show more with you but can you imagine that we only have four fully subbed episodes while you’re already on 17? Heh. So thank you so much for updating us on the story. I’m far behind. I didn’t understand why Wanru turned against A’Wu but your points make sense. I thought maybe she blamed A’Wu because the crown prince assaulted her instead of A’wu but turns out she has more reasons according to your points.

So second prince is not the son of the emperor? I didn’t see that coming at all. Anyway, since episode 3 was finally subbed, I do understand now why A’wu’s father decided not to be passive but began scheming against the emperor.

Who exactly killed the tutor Gu? Was it the second prince and his hidden backer or some other party?

Wang Xuan's former maid under the Crown Princess' false claims was given poison to poison Wang Xuan and need a snow lotus which will be given to her by He Lan Zhen. I believe He Lan Zhen fell for the same qualities as did Xiao Qi.

I liked it that Xiao Qi told the drunken Wang Xuan that she can always be the same playful girl that he first met at the festival in his company. Pampering his young wife and took her out to have some fun before settling her down to some bad news from her maternal home. If it was not for that letter, she was packing to join Xiao Qi to his next campaign.

Loved the soldiers' loyalty to their Wang Fei.

Wait, are you saying that the former maid poisoned Wang Xuan and she can only be cured by the guy who tried to rape her? Sorry, all I can think of him is that he’s an attempted rapist. Don’t like men who force themselves on women.

    7) The Emperor:  He was the one who planned the Kidnapping of Princess Wang Xuan. To thwart the PM's plan.  Frightening isn't it?  The emperor loves the Princess so much.  But will not hesitate to hurt/sacrifice her when needs arise.  His Hatred for the PM outstriped his Love for Princess Wang Xuan.  Again, the Princess became someone's else Pawn

I am shocked! Wow! From the raw episodes I actually thought it was the second prince that got Awu kidnapped. I can’t believe it’s the emperor. Wow. Trust nobody. I hope Awu finds out. It seems the number of people she can trust is dwindling fast. About her maid, I wondered if she slept with the third prince because of some dire need but it turns out it’s the crown princess’s plot. Enemies everywhere.

    Hi  @celebrianna

    1) I don't know the ML before this drama.  But I know him now - Zhou Yi Wei.  I'm a Fan now.

I love ep 12. The moment the Princess was kidnapped, I knew the "Rescue" by his "Shining Knight In Armour" will be the Highlight to look forward to.  And I'm not disappointed.

The Princess's father - the PM is very Ambitious.  He married her daughter off to the General for Political Reasons.  This Story is about Power Struggles.  According to the PM, there are 2 ways to win the struggle:

    -  Control of Supplies (Grains,  etc). The Xie Family has this

    -  The PM (Wang Family) has the Army.  They also has the monopoly of Empress position.  The current Empress is already the 12th Empress from the Wang Clan.

So, since the PM has "incapacitate" (so he thought) the Emperor, he wants to further  his Control over the Army.  He has secretly met-up with the General three times  - seeking his alliance.

Remember the Wedding Night, when the General rode away without informing his New Bride?  It was to prevent the PM from using his Army to execute an All Out Coup.

This General is a very Smart Person.  He can strategise not just in Warfare, but also in Palace Intrigues.  He can "read" the situation well.  Plus he is a Gentleman, a Principled person and a good Husband.  I must say... at this stage, he is the Character-Role I'm focussing on.

In ep 12, the General managed to answer all of the Princess's questions (doubts) and gain her trust...  and love definitely.  She realised now that she has all along been treated as "Pawn" by both the Queen and her Father.

This Pair is on their way to be The Power Couple.  I couldn't wait for ep 13 and......

Thank you for this. I love your explanation. It makes sense from what I can gather from watching the raw episodes. I didn’t want to think that the Father was after power and tried to do away with the king but your explanation confirmed it. I wasn’t sure though if Xiao Qi was going along with his plan or not. I’m very glad to hear that he didn’t allow the father to use him in an attempted coup. It shows he has a mind of his own.

  10. @hush puppy, I don’t know the actor who plays the male lead but I like to see him and he’s believable as a General. I watched the raw episodes up to 12 and only watched two subbed episodes. I like the story so far. However, I’m so impatient to understand why her father married her off to Xiao Qi. I needs subs badly. I know

    Spoiler

she’s kidnapped in episode 7 or 8. I notice that these men have a tendency to be rapists. First the crown prince and now this fool that kidnap her. I hope she doesn’t allow him to humiliate her in this way. It looks like Xiao Qi rescued her in episode 10 though.

This chairman is so self-centered.  He thinks his daughter is just jealous, when we know from flashbacks she is furious at how he treated her and her dying mother: like they were just there to serve him, stealing the mother's business that the mother built up, defrauding people to get dirty money to steal stocks from the mother and now trying to do the same from the daughter, and saying the daughter will just let any husband run the business instead of doing it herself, which is just another excuse for his lousy sexism.  His jealousy comment is just more toxic male verbal abuse stoking more female rage.

Frankly, with all the hitmen this woman knows, I'm amazed she hasn't taken a hit out on her father all this time.

I can’t stand both the father and her. It would be nice if they destroy each other. I sympathize with her past but she’s a murderer and no better than her equally disgusting father. She was sleeping with someone else’s husband then had that dirtbag husband murdered. But, considering this is a Kdrama, I suppose she might go to jail for a year and then get out. Triple disgusting is her male cousin who were raping women in that secret room. Quite a sleazy family overall. I don’t care about their equally sleazy company and the way it destroys the lives of other people. I guess the board should get rid of the family’s active management and get an outside managing director.

I hope in the end He Ra gets to raise the little boy and this time in a healthy home.

True, I was not happy how they ended the anime. Naruto is the only anime I watched which is more than 26 episodes. Recently, I watched Your Lie in April, it was very deep but as you previously said instead of having the characters at 14, they could have made that at 17 or 18. But nevertheless that was a very good anime. I also watched Kono Oto Tomare, even in that one the protagonists did not end up together but it was finished at a good point and the manga is still ongoing.

I mainly enjoyed Kono Oto Tomare for the music competition. I really enjoy their win in the season season. Their piece was beautiful.

I wonder why CMJ is against HR to use her in his revenge. It must be her exposé that got his sister in public eye.
We are going to see him regretting his actions now she is in coma- very sure.

The problem is that the flashbacks seem to be disjointed. I think he has a grudge against He Ra because of the expose but it seems to me that He Ra has her own grievance. For example, CMJ was told that his sister helped He Ra into her position as reporter. However, He Ra said nobody ever helped her and CMJ was mad when she said that. But, there was a flashback showing another staff at the news organization saying to a lady if she believed the sister really helped He Ra which suggested that there was more to the situation. Then there was a scene where it looks like He Ra’s future husband was sexually assaulting her in a private room where business people go for drinks. He was also affiliated with or worked for the news corporation. So, I’m wondering what exactly happened in He Ra’s past. She says nothing to anybody and keep all of it inside.

I actually think she knows how to endure and that’s why she can pass through so many bad things. Just like when she was taking care of her sick mom while attending school and got kicked out of their room. When I saw her as a young girl carrying her sick mom on her back through the streets, I wondered how she came this far. There was also that time that the owner of the restaurant wanted to sexually assault her and she got away and called the police. I don’t know why she put up with the scumbag husband but I would really like to know what she’s been through in a consecutive sequence.

You mean Ao Haru Ride, they didn't adapt the full manga, so was dissatisfied

True but that’s always the case with anime that serves as an advertisement for the manga/novel except for the major anime shows like Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, etc.. Kimi Ni Todoke two seasons were not the full manga. However, I see your point about Ao Haru Ride because unlike Kimi Ni Todoke, the couple didn’t get a firm resolution in the anime. I guess that couldn’t be helped because they only got together at the end of the manga anyway. :(

My friend told me that Dr. Stone's manga is still ongoing and a lot more is left in the story. So it will be one of those really long anime, and with the second season still on hold, I think I will not try it for now. Although I watched some clips and they were quite good and the whole idea of anime is interesting. I might give its manga a try though.

Among the most favorite ones, I think Lelouch does deserve it. I liked this dude, he was a calculating character, was mostly 2-3 steps ahead of everyone, and I believe they finally gave a really good closure to his character with the latest Code Geass movie. I know it remained a mystery for many years whether he was alive or not after the end of anime, and finally after so many years it was answered.

I am with "L" too. I don't know whether you know it or not, but this guy was supposed to finally catch Light in the end of Death Note, but the writers thought it would be too predictable, so they killed him, and well I know many who dropped the anime because of it. I also found the initial few episodes after his death quite boring, since the transition had to happen and the new characters had to be introduced.

About Levi too, he has got a very solid fan base in Attack On Titan fans. I know they are one of the biggest reasons that the author didn't really kill him till now, even after a very big deadly blow, where many were left wondering whether he was dead or not, he turned out to be alive. In the list above, he is the only one who is not really the ML of the anime. He is a side character, and is more famous than the main trio of the anime itself.

Edward Elric is good and likeable character too, but I won't be complaining him not being in the top 5. Would replace him with Light, but I know we've got a lot of people who loved "Kira". I am sure there must have been two groups divided when the anime was airing or the manga coming. One who be supporting him and the others against him, just like the same in anime. But Edward Elric was extremely good guy here. For me he could be among the top 5 adorable characters here.

@Sleepy Owl, I hate Light Yagami. I hate him a lot. He’s one of my most hated anime characters. I forced myself to finish the Death Note anime but I will never watch it again. Lots of people like L because he was eccentric and well, interesting. I didn’t know he wasn’t supposed to die but it effectively turned me off the story and it’s pretty forgettable to me now especially since I watched it a long time ago.

I recently fell for the anime “That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime”. I put off watching this anime for months because I found a slime unappealing as a main character. However, I watched the anime recently and I went straight to the manga afterwards. I like the world building and the main character is the type of personality I enjoy. I find absolutely nothing annoying about him. Maybe because he retained his maturity from his previous life where he was a 37 year old Japanese team leader before he was stabbed to death.

I didn’t know there was a Code Geass movie. Actually I watched that anime a long time ago so I can’t remember the story much. Heh. Maybe I’ll rewatch it since it’s on one of my streaming channels.

@mirmz, hmmm, it depends on what you like though. Those characters in Say I Love You were a bit too much for me. :sweatingbullets: When I was in high school we didn’t act like they did. Anyway, one that @pompyavi didn’t mention is Blue Spring Ride. There’s also:

    Wolf Girl and Black Prince

Blue Spring Ride (added it here too)

    My Love Story

    Tonikawa

Golden Time (didn’t watch the whole thing)

Our Love Has Always Been 10 centimeters apart (Series)

The Moment You Fall In Love (Movie for a couple in the above series)

I’ve Always Liked You (Movie for another couple in the above series)

    Kaguya-sama love is war

    The World is Still Beautiful

    Glass Mask

I read the manhwa a few weekends ago and I couldn’t understand why they would make a drama out of such a cliche story. I actually had this in my “plan to watch” list not knowing the story. I promptly took it off after reading the story because despite the fact that I do like the actors and some of their past drama shows, I just don’t see why anyone would make this story into a drama unless they are going to change the storyline but then what would be the point.:rubchin:

  18. @H0ney, I love Masumi and Maya’s romance too. It really is the best I have read including Mr. Purple Rose persona. :heart2beat: It was the only manga that made me want to learn Japanese. I bought books to self study and then crashed and burned at Kanji and their many readings.  The hiragana and katakana were easy peasy. In any case, at least a wonderful Italian fan created a website with volume summaries as a resource for English readers because the manga is officially published in Italy.

  19. @H0ney, I have read Glass Mask manga through volume 37 in English. The rest of volumes I had were in the Japanese raw through 48. It’s such a shame that the mangaka won’t finish the story. I really enjoyed the story although it did get very dramatic at times. I’m just glad that the OTP development in volume 47 was a solid move forward and now all that’s left is the selection of crimson goddess and Masumi’s resolution regarding his wacko fiancée.

@Sleepy Owl, I watch Fire Force and actually enjoyed it after a second attempt. I also watched Dr. Stone which was quite interesting especially the science part.

    3. Luffy (One Piece) - 95.0k

    4. Levi (Attack on Titans) - 94.0k

    5. Light (Death Note) - 81.7k

    Thanks for the confirmation.

Yes, I read she finally gave the second lead a chance after he wooed her for a time. Male lead was also entangled with a fiancée that he felt guilty towards. I heard the second female lead is really the villain and not the second male lead. Well, judging from the second female lead’s motive, she is indeed a villain. However, what I didn’t see coming while reading the story summary is the truth behind the accident that killed the father. What a life changing event for all the characters that led all of them to the lives they were currently leading 10 years later.

@shana0127 ~ like @maribella mentioned, in the original, she ended up with the male lead. however, this wasn't a typical triangle. will try not to give too many spoilers but part of the reason I loved this drama is that it dealt with the triangle in a very different way. it wasn't a case of "I don't know who I like" but instead, it was a case of trying to make peace with the past, figuring out why your last relationship failed. she agrees to date the second lead because she is convinced it is time to move on with her life. even the second lead wasn't some silly love obsessed twit because there were lots of other things going on in his head. not sure if this drama will have that kind of nuances from these actors. lets see...

I read the summary of the old plot and

    Spoiler

did she really end up with the second lead? I thought she and the male lead get back together in the end. The summary I read said they coincidentally met in whatever beach/island that is memorable for them and they had a serious talk and decided that this was the right time for them to start again. It was three years after all the craziness ended. I think the most shocking revelation was the one regarding the second male lead’s family. How cold blooded could that father be? Wow! Just Wow! All for the sake of money?
