KIM SHIN 

 

Chairman Yoo explained to Secretary Kim that Kim Shin's name means "to believe" [Ep 9]. This helps establishing the Hanja character for Kim Shin's given name, which is 信.

However, based on Eun-tak's Internet search results [Ep 5], the Hanja for shin in Kim Shin's name is  侁, not 信 . The screenshot of her search is in the spoiler box.

I believe this is an error on the production team's part, because 侁 means "large masses", which contradicts Chairman Yoo's abovementioned statement. Out of 25 Hanja characters formally listed by the Korean government for the given name Shin, only 信 means "to believe". 

• 金 (kim) = gold; iron (Note: generally, the character refers to any precious metal of the ancient Chinese era)
• 信 (shin) = to believe, belief, trust, to profess faith in (Note: the character consists of two characters, 人("man") and 言("speech") = a person's truthful words. The character implies that a man with this name is one who stays true to his promises)

 As this was one of two names that Kim Shin wrote down [Ep 8], there would be no mistaking the Hanja. Nevertheless, the "dawn" meaning is a new discovery for me.

• 王 (wang) = king (Note:  the three horizontal strokes are Heaven, Man and Earth. The vertical stroke is the king. A king, therefore, has to connect Heaven, Man, and Earth. This implies that a king's failure in maintaining this sacred connection/carrying out the mandate to rule justly, will result in Heavenly punishment)
•  黎 (yeo) = dark; black; dawn; many people; commoners

Thank you so much for the explanation. Thank god I could read some of these Hanja - Traditional Chinese. I guess naming of a child really affects the person's character, probably why the asians actually go to pro fortune teller to get a good name.

I can't get more awestruck with their planning. It's just too top notch. The scenes layout, the way they dress, the wordings on the clothes (not sure if it's true that it imply something in the show), the colors they use to represent the characters, even to their names! They must have really spent a lot of time deciding on how these details would let us go mindblown. Reminds me of literature.

Speaking of colors, it kinds of reminds me how some of us kept talking about who is on which side of the team. EunTak with red scarf, Red Halmoni. Goblin with blue flame, DeokHwa in blue clothings (as mentioned by some)

Same here. I think it's cherry blossom. Oh does it mean that Sunny will remember somehow her past life?...Cos her eyes are not only full of tears, but pain as well. Finally some justice for YIN! @gamshe I think we'll finally see more of her superb dramatic acting.

And in tvN'z twitter post with this vide from google translate it's somethig "Finally their story willbe revealed". But it makes no sence since only viewers and Dieties know the secret behind Grim Reaper.

I was surfing the Korean sites looking for fan theories on Deokhwa and this site posted a theory that seemed plausible, translated below. Part of the fun of drama watching are fan discussions and reading theories, so please enjoy

Who is Chil-sung shin?

Chil-sung shin, together with Samshin are the most popular deities worshipped in Korean folk culture. It is believed that he possessed an extensive range of abilities that transcended various religions.

He is widely regarded to be in charge of human lifespan and supervises the health and longevity of humans. Chil-sung is also believed to be the god of rain and also believed to be in charge of wealth and talents / abilities.

My hypothesis is that Deokhwa is Chil-sung and have discovered several interesting facts while watching the drama and I’ve tried to collate some points to show that.

1.       Kim Shin’s death and Chil-sung shin

When the people learnt of the death of Kim Shin, they called upon Chil-sung shin’s name.

By allowing Chil-sung’s name to be spoken through the people, writer Kim Eun Sook might as well be letting him make an appearance in the drama.

Writer Kim Eun Sook, by using the people to reference Chil-sung shin’s name, is no different from Chil-sung appearing in the drama himself.

2.        Deokhwa has the same face as his ancestor

It is extremely rare for someone to be born with the same face after reincarnating, but Deokhwa possesses the same face as his ancestor.

By showing the face of the ancestor who possessed the same face as Deokhwa right after the Goblin had confirmed it seemed like a hidden foreshadowing of sorts, didn’t it?

3.       Deokhwa and Samshin

Adult Deokhwa’s first appearance in the drama was when he casually invited Samshin in her young disguise out for a drink. He had the air of a spoilt third-generation chaebol, and Samshin didn’t seem too happy about accepting so quickly.

The strangeness of their meeting was enhanced in the second meeting between Deokhwa and Samshin in the recent episode. Samshin ran into Deokhwa the moment she stepped out of the bookstore after warning Kim Shin. Although it is not clear whether he overheard the exchange between Samshin and Goblin or whether he just happened to pass by, this scene clearly is hinting at something.

What differs from the first scene is that Samshin has elevated her speech when speaking to Deokhwa while Deokhwa uses casual speak.

I wonder if it is because as the supreme god, Chil-sung is ranked much higher than Samshin.

4.       Deokhwa creating connections during important moments

From the very first episode, Deokhwa played an important role in the meeting  of various characters. He created the meeting between Grim Reaper and Goblin after receiving rent for the Goblin’s house.

When Euntak returned to the bookshop to retrieve the maple leaf she stuck in the book, Deokhwa appeared just as if it were a coincidence to return the leaf to her.

He was there together with Grim Reaper when they opened the scroll of Kim Shin’s sister and ratted on Grim Reaper to reveal the relationship between goblin and Kim Sun.

Deokhwa’s actions in this continuing thread of fate makes his identity even more suspicious.

5.       Deokhwa lied about Kim Shin’s will being a love letter

Euntak found the goblin’s will in his room and consulted Deokhwa, who claimed he has mastered various foreign languages since childhood due to his 3^rd generation chaebol upbringing.

“Dear god. My will is a petition to you to grant my death. Once I thought this life was a gift, but it has turned out to be a punishment. Not one death have I forgotten. And thus, I’ve tried to end this life. However, as usual, god has not listened.”

Even as Deokhwa said this was a love letter, he could narrate the goblin’s inner thoughts without the goblin ever mentioning this to him within the confines of the drama.

“The oracle was right; the future I saw was right. Through this child, my immortal existence will now come to an end and I will return to nothingness. The human lifespan is but a hundred years; is the thing I’m turning back to look at one more time my immortal life or is it your face? Ah…I think it is your face.”

“One day after living a hundred years, one day, when the weather is just right, I ask the heavens for permission to confess that it was my first love.”

Deokhwa knew the goblin’s inner thoughts without the goblin having ever mentioned it to him. If this isn’t suspicious, what is it?

6.       Deokhwa’s ability to find the goblin’s bride when both Grim Reaper and Goblin were unable to (feat. Butterfly)

When Euntak went into hiding after finding out that the goblin would die if she pulled out the sword, both Grim Reaper and Goblin were unable to find her despite searching everywhere.

Deokhwa though, mentioned that he had his ways and the next scene was the butterfly finding Euntak in a ski resort.

Although there have been some who called it a red herring, there were too many other clues laid out earlier that makes this scene suspicious enough.

Also when Kim Shin released the lantern, the light from the lantern fell on Deokhwa….and a picture of Buddha.

In the shots above, it seemed like it was framed in such a way that Deokhwa was observing the goblin through a picture frame, which adds to the credibility that he is some otherworldly being.

@aurelly thanks for sharing! fancam. From what I read in captions (translated) from various vids, Wookie has came late and they have been filming there with YIN, who came later again. And people are glad that the filming location is so convinient that they can stalk there both LDW and GY and see either of them, but they mention that it's already so late and freaking cold. But they will return tomorrow again. Poor people. And from various fan cams I've watched today, there are a lot of Chinese there.

And looks like they're still filming. Wookie has changed and returned. So they must be filming few scenes (btw he was wearing at first same clothes as from last night's filming).  The same as KGE was filming few scenes today at uni.

And from earlier filming with KGE. Looks like he was on duty. Maybe he was protecting her there? Cos in each episode he breaks another God's rules written for GRs.

Insider reveals author of Goblin rejected Lee Dong Wook multiple times

Actor Lee Dong Wook recently revealed a secret regarding his casting for the role of the Grim Reaper in hit drama series Goblin.

tvN‘s latest drama Goblin has taken Korea and the world by storm, surpassing even Descendants of the Sun in popularity and causing tourists to flock to its filming sites. The main cast of Gong Yoo, Kim Go Eun, Lee Dong Wook, Yoo Inna, and Yook Sungjae have shown great chemistry with each other, but the perfect chemistry between Gong Yoo and Lee Dong Wook almost didn’t happen.

It has been publicly known that writer Kim Eun Sook chose Gong Yoo to star as Kim Shin from the very beginning. At the writer’s presentation, Kim Eun Sook said, “I’ve been rejected [by Gong Yoo] for 5 years now, so I was extra careful when I made the proposal [for him] to appear in my drama.”
