I've always thought that the writing was pretty good. There are plenty of nuances and layers in the storyline. Most of the issues are really post-production stuff.

I think it's why the king probably kept So as far away from her as he could. While I can't condone his taste in women (probably didn't have much choice in the matter), Taejo seems to me quite a cluey operator. I'm sure So was pretty smart as a kiddie too.

I expect he's got his succession plan all worked out.

 My utmost focus while acting as Wang Wook was 'reason.' Of course, reason would be important for any character, but for Wang Wook, rationality/reason was the core of his character and the cause of the changes in the character as well as the theme of the character of Wang Wook himself. I so agree with this, and can relate to it very well too, which is why I'm cutting him some slack in the romance department. I love WW, but I love WS more for HS

Yes, if he were to be punished by the King, everyone in his household under his care will be punished as well, even the lowliest servants.

On a side note, may I just say that Queen Yoo is so beautiful with her straight hair down. Been wanting to say this since the early episodes. I know probably I'm the only one who thinks that, hahahaha....

SBS’ period drama “Scarlet Heart: Ryeo” is nearing the half way mark with episode 10 scheduled to broadcast on Monday.

To celebrate the halfway mark, SBS has released an interview with actor Lee Joon-gi who plays the 4th prince, Wang So.

Below is the translated version of the interview:

Q: The ritual scene in the rain has stirred a buzz among viewers. What were your thoughts when you were acting it?

I thought that it would be a pivotal scene in Wang So’s character change. I wanted to show how Hae-soo allowed him to break out of the cold exterior that he suppressed himself in and overcome the scar that had tormented him. I tried to act in a way that showed his emotional development as he addressed his people. 

Q: The ritual scene truly is a groundbreaking scene. What do you think?

I’m relieved and glad that its being received so positively. I knew it would be a big twist in the story, but I had no idea it would be such a hit. The scene really worried me because I had to portray an ancient character in a way that wouldn’t disrespect the historic significance.

Q: Your character’s relationship with Hae-soo is really unique. What are Wang So’s feelings for Hae-soo.

She is the only person that saw him for what he truly was. He’s also most honest when he’s around her. She’s somebody that he wants to protect, and he feels he is being protected by her as well. She’s the first person that has treated him kindly and warmly so his feelings for her are becoming more and more pronounced. 

Q: Your chemistry with Wang Wook’s actor Kang Ha-neul is also getting a lot of attention. Your characters are the same age, so how does that affect the relationship between So and Wook.

Wang So thinks that Wook understands him. Among all his other brothers, he feels that he’s closest with Wook and so when he said “there’s nothing that’s yours here. She is all mine,” my character had to try really hard to hide his shock. They might see the same things, but they look at it differently, so it adds an interesting dynamic to the characters. 

Q: Which viewer reaction was the most memorable?

When I had to take off the mask and show the scar, I was worried that viewers would be turned off by it, but instead they didn’t even think it was important at all and sympathized with my character. I was really grateful, because what used to be significant is not anymore so it shows how the viewers have become more accepting. Whats important is the character, not what he looks like. That’s the kind of actor I want to be as well. 

Q: “Scarlet Heart: Ryeo” is not only popular in the Middle-East but also in North America. What are your thoughts on that?

I’m extremely grateful. Every culture is different and they have different tastes. I’m glad we satisfy their tastes, and it also really interests me. When I read feedback and encouraging comments on my social media, I feel like I want to be a better actor. 

Q: What should we look out for from Wang So?

From being the most neglected prince, Wang So suddenly becomes the center of attention. He was a self-conscious and introverted boy before but now he’s gonna show a more strong and assertive character. He will tackle betrayal, jealousy, romance and more so keep watching!

A. I concentrated hard because it was the scene highlighting the change in Wang So. I wanted to show him regain confidence as a young boy who had been intimidated by cold outlooks but was able to get rid of the stigma of the scar with Soo's help approaching the altar step by step. As So was passing by the common people, the princes and court officials, and the king and his queens in order, I tried to convey how the emotional intensity gradually rose in him.

Q. The part where Wang So is tranformed into Gwangjong towards the end of the ritual generated much talk

A. I'm glad that it got a positive response. I knew that it would be surprising, but I didn't know it would be this dramatic. I had put much thought into it as I had to preserve the image of So as well as show passage of time as Gwangjong.

Q. Your relationship with Hae Soo seems unique. What are Wang So's feelings for Hae Soo?

A. Soo is the only 'person' that sees So the way he is. Also, So can become the most honest/open when he is with Soo. While she's a woman he wants to protect, Wang So also feels like he's being protected by her. A. So had thought that Wook understood him. They are all my people," So tries hard to hide is perplexity. When So and Wook see the same thing, their perceptions/thoughts and expressions are different. You'll see what I mean as you watch on, so please look forward to the rest of the show.

Q. What kind of viewer responses left the biggest impression on you?

A. I was a little worried that viewers may be scared of the scar on my face once it was revealed, but people were more sympathetic to So, saying that a scar doesn't matter. I was thankful for such responses because that means what used to be considered flaws in the past are not as important anymore today. What's important is what's inside that person. I want to become an actor that can portray that.

Q. 'Moon Lovers' is gaining popularity in North America as well as the East and South Asian areas. This is unusual. How do you feel about that?

A. I am very grateful. Viewers from each different culture seem to find enjoyment from different parts, and I find such different perspectives intriguing. I renew my resolution to become a better actor when I see the various encouraging messages from fans on social media.

Q. What shall viewers focus on as we continue to watch Wang So?

A. His surroundings change completely as he turns from the most humble prince to the most favored one. You could say he was an insecure boy so far, but from now on, he'll become more reliable and solid. He'll face some crisis as he becomes the subject of aspiration, envy, and jealousy all at the same time. Also, an unusual romance awaits. I tried hard not to lose my anchor in my acting because various emotions come and go.

Isn't it how we (in this thread) sees WS's feeling for HS? All the posts of 600 pages (from me, you, us at this thread) tell the same thing: HAE SOO IS THE ONLY PERSON THAT SEES SO THE WAY HE IS.

It seems that LJG and us think the same way.  

Though i might be denying the fact that the novel and c-version have sad ending, deep down inside i hope the k-version has happy ending.  I'm looking forward to the last 9 episodes of MLSHR.

Poor WS he has a lot to deal with and it seems that HS will betray him and he'll become jealous of HS and WW so this could be were his obsession comes in at.. HS will have no clue to how she will be affecting the princes life..

I think the start is going to be happy but then things are just going to go down and down and down....

The writers will get us all happy and excited as we see them going on their little trip to the sea and then BAM the assassination attempt, WS drinking poison, misunderstandings, arresting ... the list keeps going ...

sorry to bring the c-version up again, but a thought just occured to me earlier today (this drama has taken up at least 75% of my brain space lately!!! ):

I do believe that in c-version, there was a (kind of odd, imo) daydream sequence of 4th prince imagining Ruoxi dancing for him in a beautiful red costume. I believe this signified his realization of his romantic feelings for Ruoxi. This scene was also shown when he was on his deathbed near the end of the series, which shows how he never was able to forget Ruoxi after all those years...

Anyway, i wonder if Wang So being struck by HaeSoo's bday song for 10th was supposed to be the k-version counterpart!

 

 

In the meantime, only several more hours until ep 10!   Unfortunately I won't be able to join until much later... yay time differences and work schedule!

Below is a translated version of the interview:

Q: People have begun calling you the “Romeo of Goryeo” and have claimed that your gaze is like honey. Do you like the nickname and the things people have said about you? What about your close acquaintances? 

I’m not quite sure because I‘ve seen my eyes my whole life, but I am very grateful for the compliments. My friends take screenshots of articles that use the nickname and send it to me. I actually get teased a lot, but it makes me feel good because I know my friends send me these things for fun. I’m truly grateful to the viewers and fans that say those things about myself though. All I did was stick to the script and tried my best to give a good performance, but because I‘m being so positively received, I’m very grateful. 

Q: The scene where you walk in the snow with Lee Ji-eun in the fifth episode has become really famous. What are your thoughts on that?

There’s a lot of background to that scene. We almost couldn‘t film it actually. We needed to film a snow scene, but it wasn’t snowing so it was very difficult. So we filmed the other scenes while we waited for it to snow, but luck would have it that the last snowfall was coming up. So we rounded up the whole production team and filmed that scene at last. It was very memorable. 

Q: You spent a lot of time acting with Lee Joon-gi and Lee Ji-eun. How was it?

I‘ve been a fan of Lee Joon-gi since I was young and he’s an actor I really look up to. It was just a great joy to work beside him. Even before meeting him I wanted to contact him, so I got his number through his agency and contacted him very carefully and respectfully. I was surprised he was happy that I got his number and contacted him like a stalker. I think that definitely built a bond and made filming a lot more fun. 

With Lee Ji-eun, I only knew her music so I thought it would be a bit hard to break the ice, but she has such a great personality and so we just naturally kicked it off. Were also in a similar age group so it was easy relating to each other. Her focus and acting was also really amazing which motivated me to work harder as well. 

Q: What was the inspiration behind your character‘s thoughts on arranged marriages, family expectations and Hae-soo (Lee Ji-eun) in the drama. 

While playing the role of Wang Wook, I put a lot of emphasis on reason. I think reason is a definitive factor in fully immersing yourself into character. You have to think, what is my character’s reason behind this and that? So I put myself in his shoes and imagined myself under his pressures to justify the reasons behind his actions and behavior. The reason for an arranged marriage, the reason behind falling in love with Hae-soo, and later the reason behind his change in character. He‘s actually quite an unfortunate person. 

Q: We are now on episode 10, what can we expect as the story unfolds even further?

Now there’s only 10 episodes left. I just want to say thank you to everyone for watching and staying tuned. It really means a lot to see the hard work we put in come to fruition. You can expect an even more heart wrenching story to unfold so make sure to keep watching.

Finally,it's less than 7 hours to 10 PM KST, I already prepare a blanket and a warm bowl of soup to comfort me in one of tortuous time for our OTP (or a glass of champagne on top of a building if you're on evil queen side. cheers to the victorious trap. LOL.) Let's do the circle hugs and get through this together, shall we?

Okay since now we have saw 'that spoiler-y pic', looks like we would inevitably heading to that 'aggravating, irksome, and head-banging' part where wang so would married to yeonhwa, just like what's written in history. Of course, I have told myself to stomach the reality many times, but still I can't help but feel bad to our OTP that apparently they would never catch a break.

Now if I try to surmise the inducements that led to this arranged-marriage, at least there are two plausible causes, it's either

• by force, similar to eun, he was tormented on the receiving end, like a political pawn, and not in the position to opposed the marriage or defying royal decree.
• or by pragmatic choice, in a way he also calculating his benefits into account and he was not just a pawn but held the stirring wheel in their pure-business relationship. Which much more fitting to his personality. It's mutually beneficial and would consolidate power necessary for the throne, a position they both aspire for different reasons. For him, it was probably a mixture of haesoo's sake, desire to avenge his mother's humiliation, or put a stop to tyrant wang yo. As difficult as it is to admit, we saw that both reserved a tiny soft spot to each other, I would not necessarily call it affection (no way!), but their interactions never suggest an abhorrence, it was civil and respect in manner. Other than the fact it was incestuous relationship, it was not that appalling that they somehow form an allegiance through marriage in the future. Like it or not, YH probably much more fitting to be a queen than our modern day haesoo, she has both brain and spine to survive the challenges as a queen. I conclude she will be a better version of evil queen, she has a good combination of quality between EQ and queen sinjeong, she is as manipulative and ruthless as EQ, but not as emotional, she knows when to strike and when to held back, and just like her brother WW she knows how to hide behind a perfect facade of smile and kind courtesy. I believe she would offer him much help as political partner in mobilizing influences in court and manage the intricacy of palace, at least before their relationship goes completely sour in the latter part of their marriage. In other words,she can be the queen of goryeo and haesoo's will always be the queen of his heart.

There's also a plausibility that it was a combination of both, but I prefer if it was leaning towards the second option just because I don't want him to be portrayed as a hopeless romantic that completely caught off guard and been force into a marriage he did not want to commit. As cruel as it is betraying our heroine's feeling, the second option is much in line with his character and I better believe he had a da*n good reason for it.

Either way, this marriage would completely change the dynamic between our OTP, adding another insurmountable hurdle for their happiness. But like any relationship worth fighting for, would she swallow the bitter pill of reality, and finally relents in compromising her ideal view of love and marriage just for him? Or would she surrender their dream to have a future together and just quietly loves him from a far?  Neither one of this choices would make her happy to be honest, and when the time comes I would be a dysfunctional emo mess. 

So...when would the arranged-marriage likely happen on this drama? Considering the possible inducements I explain above, I think there are two plausible timeline for this to happen:

• If the reason leaning towards by force, then I assume it would come sooner than we expected when their father still is THE KING. Why? It's because it can't be done much later, neither CP,EQ (through WY) or YH herself could force WS to arrange marriage, he definitely would retaliate and fight against their plan especially since his stake of the throne as legitimate as theirs. It's different if their father still the king, he was an authoritative figure to both of them and if YH (with the help of EQ) manage to convince him to gave her to WS, no one can contests his decision. Besides, since YH already in marriageable age, she need to be hurry for her plan to work, if not she would be sent off elsewhere to another marriage. However, I am doubtful it would happen this early because I am holding on hope that our OTP will have their peaceful and wondrous time of their relationship during CP's reign (Bless you, wang mu, my teddy bear awesome brotherly prince, don't failed me please....) and that won't happen if WS already married. Why? Because if he does, he would live elsewhere from palace and then there's YH, where in the world would my poor little HS go then?
• That is why it's much more plausible if the reason was a pragmatic choice, then it's most likely happen in between the later end of CP's reign to the beginning of WY's reign. It's the most turbulent times for our OTP with chaotic power struggles between the princes' in the palace. With so many things at stake, i think he was motivated into a decision to ascend the throne himself to protect everything that near and dear to him and YH offer a beneficial relationship that could consolidate power necessary for the throne.

Okay I should end my speculation now, it's getting too long and real life restrictions start interrupting (on my way to work......), apologize if this make you snooze and bores you to death, lol, I get carried away easily when my inner fan girl self take over the sane side of me, and thank you to all of you who kind enough to read it till the end.
