(LEAD) Actress Song Hye-kyo: 'Descendants of the Sun' gave me a good opportunity

SEOUL, April 20 (Yonhap) -- Actress Song Hye-kyo may have been the happiest woman in Korea from last summer to this spring when the TV drama series "Descendants of the Sun" was being filmed. It turned out to be a series full of heartthrob male characters, led by special forces Capt. Yoo Si-jin.

The military romance drama shot Song Joong-ki, who played Yoo, to Asiawide stardom, causing many women in the continent sleepless nights when the show came on.

Song Hye-kyo's character in the series is female surgeon Kang Mo-yeon who develops a romance with Yoo in the fictional war-torn country of Uruk, where Yoo is part of South Korea's peacekeeping force and Kang a volunteer for a medical relief NGO.

"I thought the male protagonist's role was really important for the show's success, and he accomplished that difficult job," the actress said during a news conference at a hotel in central Seoul on Wednesday to mark the show's successful closure. "His acting was so good it actually made my heart leap."

Broadcast simultaneously in South Korea and China, the show became an instant hit in the two nations as well as other Asian countries. The 16-episode series concluded with a stunning 38.8 percent viewership last Thursday in South Korea, which is extremely high for a weeknight drama.

In China, the show has scored over 2 billion cumulative views on iQiyi, the video-streaming website that ran the series.

Song said, however, that she didn't fully comprehend the fever the show created in China until she visited Hong Kong with her male lead for a promotional tour early this month.

"In Hong Kong, I saw students in school uniforms follow a Korean star for the first time in years," she said. "My counterpart actor has become a new hallyu star, so I felt really great that he received so much love." Hallyu means the Asiawide popularity of Korean TV dramas, pop music and films.

Questioned about how she feels with the show now over, Song said she would first like to express her thanks for so much love and attention paid to the show by fans.

"This work gave me a big opportunity, so I'm really thankful for it," she said.

"Descendants" marked her small-screen comeback after the 2013 drama series "That Winter, the Wind Blows."

   "Many big and small things happened over the past three years. So, this work was really important to me. I worked very hard, thinking this might be my last chance to act," said the 35-year-old actress, apparently alluding to the incident in 2014 when she came under public fire over her 2.5 billion won ($2.4 million) tax evasion fiasco.

Despite the show's success, she said there will be no drastic change in her career.

"I don't think there will be a turn in my path of life because of this latest success," she said. "I will continue to read screenplays and choose to act in ones I like, as I usually do."

   Song said one of her favorite moments in the show was when Yoo confessed his feelings for her by saying, "Should I apologize or confess my feelings?"

   "The scene really turned me on. I thought he acted very well and his voice is good," the actress said, adding that she enjoyed most of the show's episodes at home because it was a pre-produced drama. "I was not an actress but a woman engrossed in the drama at that very moment."

As for her title as an original hallyu star, she had the modesty to describe the phenomenon as the result of collective efforts by many Korean actors and actresses.

"That's what Korean stars have achieved all together. I'm honored to be part of the phenomenon as an actress," she said.

She gained Asiawide fame for her roles in "Autumn in My Heart" (2000) and "Full House" (2004). Before "Descendants," Song mostly worked in the Chinese film industry with such giant filmmakers as John Woo and Wong Kar-wai.

"I learned a lot in the past four years as a person and an actress, although I was upset and annoyed to miss many good chances in Korea," she said.

Asked what her future path will be after "Descendants," Song said even she doesn't know the answer.

"Nothing was decided regarding whether I will appear in Korean or Chinese work. I'm keeping all possibilities open."

Sorry for the radio silence until now but....I have finished the first marathon (in spite of terrible things like work and a quick weekend travelling to see my parents!) and I have to say that I was right: when watching the entire thing, it feels like you're watching a really long movie and even if I had fun spotting continuity errors, it did not distract me from the story.

Result: I'm now even more in love with this drama than ever before. I will probably repeat the marathon once we have Friday's special out, so I can watch it at the end as some sort of 'special making of' together with whatever this 'epilogue' turns out to be.

As a note....I'm sorry to tell you but, on a continued viewing Yoo Shi-jin is EVEN more lethal for your coronaries.

I didnt catch the live streaming bcoz i know it will be recapped for the whole episode. I dont expect much of epilogue that tell the next story. That's the point of 16episodes format. But we will see it a few days. I'm looking forward for the BTS coz i tend to download them if i'm addicted to the drama. Gaksital maybe, i collect almost 80 clips of BTS. With YCFAS, everybody know there will be a special epiloque bcoz a sighting of the OTP shooting location that was not in any previous episode (the cute Do Manager) . Gud nite guys.

i love how SJ looks at MY too! that what make me fall in love in this drama in the first place. this is first time i watch the male lead watching the female lead smitten and lovingly from ep 1 in a romance kdrama. usually the guy will fight and insult the girl first even he already develop feelings for her but our captain? NO. he just go straight to flirting with her and then ask her out

anyway if it not too much, can you post of si jin stare at mo yeon in ep 5? the scene where they at cafe after mo yeon get the gold card from the arab VIP. his stare was so intense wow!

Decided to post this here as well since I also translated Q&A for SJK. It only seems fair. And I really do enjoy this thread  The content is quite similar to previously translated articles and Q&A's provided. Just a heads up.

Q: What have you been up to since the drama ended?

Because the drama ended so well, I've been very happy. Even though the drama did well, I'm not actually as busy as I thought I would be. 

Q: What was it like acting together with SJK?

SJK-ssi gained a lot of female fans through this drama. It's something to congratulate. When I first read the script, it was fun but I also thought the male protagonist needs to do well in order for the drama to succeed. It was that important, and thankfully SJK-ssi did that difficult thing to do. (t/n: Pretty sure she's making a joke by referring back to YSJ's famous words lol.) He acted so well that even my own heart fluttered when acting with him, so that's probably why the response was so good. 

Q; Any particular acting secret for [good] chemistry in melodramas?

It's not based on my strength alone. For each case, there was good teamwork with my co-star. The staff also helped create a good environment and so I think there was a likewise positive response. 

Q: Thoughts on the rapid plot development?

Because it was a pre-produced project, I never felt that the the story plot was developing quickly when acting. After it was aired, there were viewers who were happy with it and others who considered it negatively. I was happy with the results. I think it's because it is a drama that it could turn out that way. It's because it's a fantasy drama that I'm satisfied with the results. 

Q: Would you date a man like YSJ in real life?

I think I would be scared if I were to date a man like YSJ in real life. The power of his love would have to be strong enough to overcome [that fear] in order to instill enough trust in me. In the first half of the drama, many viewers couldn't understand why KMY couldn't accept a guy who was chasing after her so much. In the latter half, [they said] it was good that she finally opened her heart to him when under more dire circumstances. In reality, if it was that kind of a guy, I would be similar to KMY and consider a lot of things before starting anything. 

Q: Any scene that made your heart flutter?.

Personally, the scene that made my heart flutter was "Should I confess? Or should I apologize?." It made me shiver. In that scene [SJK] acted well and his voice sounded good as well. 

Q: SJK-ssi quickly became a Hallyu star. Thoughts?

Everyone seems to know that SJK-ssi is nice, sincere, and well-mannered, even if I don't say it myself.  This drama took about 6 months to film. When there are many difficult scenes to film, like the earthquake scenario, it's normal to become frustrated/annoyed. But JK-ssi was the same from the beginning to the end. I felt like I had a lot to learn from him even though he is younger. Also, despite the fact that he probably had a lot to do himself, he was also taking caring of even the youngest staff members, which was nice (t/n: she literally says 'pretty') to see. I think he's a rare actor to see/come across. We also supported each other a lot. As a male lead actor, he fulfilled the the role perfectly. He's a very cool friend. 

Q: [KMY] has a girl-crush feel to her. How was it acting [as KMY]?

People thought I was acting stingy or prudish, but I thought it was closer to being more manly (t/n: can also be interpreted like a tom-boy). I think that's why I had a lot of female fans. I was told I spoke in a manly way. So I was very satisfied with acting as KMY. I had to think of my image and still had to hold down a bit in comparison to my own personality, but it was fun to act as KMY. 

Q: There were a lot of cringe-worthy lines. Thoughts?

As a woman I didn't think there were many lines that were really cringe-worthy, but many people felt that way. There was one in particular. "A beauty, a doll." (T/n: During the scene when YSJ asks about KMY's blood-type.) It was hard to say that line. I thought I was going to die. I think if I had been in my 20s, I would have confidently said it, but since I'm not, I worried a lot more about those scenes than the emotional ones. There are so many pretty actresses in their 20s, I wonder what they will think when watching this scene. I cringed a bit when I said I was a doll.  

Q: What is it like to live as SHK?

I think it's the same. I had a lot of friends since I was young. So many friends, it was sometimes hard to handle. But as I grew older, my social circle got smaller. It was a natural result since I had to be cautious all the time. But I'm still the same. When it's hard, they cry with me. When it's stressful, we drink wine or travel. When I'm frustrated, I get angry at people. The only difference is that I'm a celebrity, but other than that, I'm the same as other women my age. 

Q: Recently you've received attention for rejecting a Japanese advertisement offer and promoting Korean brochures.  We'd like to hear about your values/thoughts.

I believe that anyone in the same circumstances would have refused the advertisement offer.  Also, it's been a while since I've worked with Prof. Seo Kyung Deok on the Korean brochures. Since I was young, when I would go abroad, there would be Japanese, Chinese, and all other languages available at museums, but only Korean was excluded. By coincidence, I came to know Prof. SKD and told him about my experience. It was from then that we started working together. There is still a lot for me learn. I also don't know everything about our nation's history, and continue to learn as I go. In the future I will continue to go forward doing what I believe is right/just despite what other may say. 

Q: What are your honest thoughts on the dating rumors with SJK?

It's true we had a lot of meals together. I think it blew up because of NY, but it's a place I coincidentally see a lot of people. Aside from JK-ssi, I met a lot of other people. We worked together on a project for 6 months. I also think the scandal blew up because of the couple bracelet, but mine was a hair tie. It was those kinds of things that made it seem like something, but now everyone knows (laughs).  Also, I want to thank Yoo Ah In for making a cameo in a short scene despite how busy he is.  Starting with Kwang-soo in the beginning and finishing with Ah-In in the end, thank you so much. 

Q: Future plans?

I want to greet viewers through diverse characters. There isn't as much diversity in roles available to female actresses in comparison male actors. So if I had a wish, it would be that more diverse characters and genres emerged for actresses.

Song Hye Kyo talked at great length about her latest work 'Descendants of the Sun' in an interview with Sport Chosun on April 20. During this interview, Song Hye Kyo had nothing but good to say about co-star Song Joong Ki.

The actress said, "In the viewers' perspective, I mused, 'So that's how charismatic [Song Joong Ki] is,' and I thought, 'That's why people like him so much.' My heart was all aflutter watching the confession scene." 

Song Hye Kyo also went on to compliment Song Joong Ki to no end, saying, "As a person, Song Joong Ki is kind, hardworking, and polite with good manners. It's as everyone says. What people liked him about on set is that he was consistent. When people are having a hard time, they can act irritable but with Song Joong Ki, he was the same from beginning to end. He may be younger but I believed I had a lot to learn [from him]. Actors like him are rare these days. When I look at younger actors, there are many who aren't like him."

Song Hye-kyo had a dinner meeting with the members of 'Descendants of the Sun'.

 

 

On April 20th, Song Hye-kyo posted a group photo she took along with Lee Seung-joon, Suh Jung-yeon, Park Hwan-hee, Hyun Juni, Onew, and Kim Min-seok. The heartwarming vibe among the team members is impressive.

 

 

Song Hye-kyo pouted her lips and showed a v sign with her fingers while smiling brightly. She is bonding with her fellow actors, while everybody put their bodys so close to each other. She also added the witty comment on the image, "Medical team! Min-seok, which team do you belong to".

 

 

Kim Min-seok also responded to the comment, "Happy time with our medial team, although I'm not a member of medical team. I'm a bat of Sun, a golden bat".

 

 

Meanwhile, KBS 2TV's Wednesday & Thursday drama, 'Descendants of the Sun' closed its curtain on April 14th. The final episode recorded its personal best, 38.8% according to Nielsen Korea.

After their meeting in New York, photos of them rapidly circulated online and dating rumors spread. The dating rumors began with speculations about the pair allegedly wearing matching bracelets.

 

 

 

Song Hye Kyo continued, “I think people viewed it differently because it was New York. I actually meet a lot more people than you would think in New York. Also, it was Fashion Week when Song Joong Ki and I met.

 

 

“Isn’t it funny that we couldn’t eat together because of scandal worries despite Song Joong Ki going all the way there, and when we are friends who have worked on a project together for six months?
