Upcoming drama “Island” has released another action-packed teaser!

Based on a webtoon of the same name, “Island” is a fantasy exorcism drama that takes place on Jeju Island. It depicts the sorrowful and bizarre journey of the characters who are fated to fight evil that is trying to destroy the world. The drama will be helmed by director Bae Jong of “Welcome to Dongmakgol” and “Fabricated City.”

The newly released teaser captures a look at the heroes Pan (Kim Nam Gil), Mi Ho (Lee Da Hee), and John (ASTRO’s Cha Eun Woo) who will be fighting against evil. Right from the start, Pan narrates, “An evil that has been parasitic on this land since the beginning of time—we are unaware of where they are or where they will appear.”

Frightening monsters with razor-sharp claws and fangs begin to appear on Jeju Island, sweeping the island up in a whirlwind of chaos until Pan and John make epic entrances to fight off the monsters. Shocked speechless with terror, Mi Ho makes her escape as creatures she has never seen before begin to chase after her.

The text, “Special beings who face against evil finally started to make their move,” appears on screen as John blocks off the creatures with his powerful staff. Mi Ho joins the fight, aiming the gun with a steady gaze, while Pan skillfully defends against the monster while dexterously wielding the sword Geumgangjeo.

When Mi Ho asks why the monsters have begun to chase after her, she receives the chilling answer, “Because your destiny calls them.”

TVING has shared photos from the first script reading for “Island”!

Based on the hit webtoon of the same name, “Island” is a fantasy drama about a dark secret hidden on beautiful Jeju Island—and people who are fated to fight evil forces that are trying to destroy the world.

The newly released photos capture the synergy, chemistry, and passion of the “Island” cast, despite the reading being their first meeting. Alongside director Bae Jong and writer Oh Bo Hyun at the reading were cast members Kim Nam Gil, Lee Da Hee, ASTRO’s Cha Eun Woo, Sung Joon, Park Geun Hyung, Jeon Gook Hwan, Kim Ki Chun, Oh Kwang Rok, Kang Hyun Joong, Geum Kwang San, Kim Jin Man, Lee Soo Won, Heo Jung Hee, and Yoo Seung Ok, as well as child actors Park Seo Kyung, Kim Seo Joon, and Kim Min Joon.

The director commented, “Although this is an unbelievable fantasy, I hope this drama becomes the role of oxygen and delivers good inspiration and touching emotion to many viewers.”

In his role as Pan, who is described as both a human and a monster, Kim Nam Gil immediately caught everyone’s attention with his first line. With his convincing tone as an immortal monster hunter protecting the world from evil demons, Kim Nam Gil reliably led the reading.

Lee Da Hee stars opposite Kim Nam Gil as Won Mi Ho, the “person at the center of fate.” As a third-generation chaebol and teacher, Lee Da Hee perfectly captured her character’s calm nature despite being placed in a chaotic situation.

ASTRO’s Cha Eun Woo plays exorcist John and impressed his co-stars with how easily his lines flowed, as if the role was created just for him. Even donning the eye-catching hairstyle of his character Goong Tan, Sung Joon made a memorable transformation and showed his dedication to the role.

TVING’s upcoming drama “Island” has shared a new sneak peek of Kim Nam Gil in his starring role!

Based on the hit webtoon of the same name, “Island” is a fantasy drama about a dark secret hidden on beautiful Jeju Island—and people who are fated to fight evil forces that are trying to destroy the world.

Kim Nam Gil will be playing the role of Pan, an immortal monster hunter who has been protecting the world from evil demons for thousands of years. Lee Da Hee will star as Mi Ho, a chaebol heiress who possesses a powerful strength of which she is unaware, while ASTRO’s Cha Eun Woo will star as a young exorcist priest known as John.

One photo captures the hunter in the midst of a thrilling fight, wearing both a murderous glare and a self-assured smirk at the same time, while another shows him gripping a weapon with an intense look of determination.

The producers of “Island” commented, “From the very first shoot, Kim Nam Gil brought the character of Pan to life through not only a detailed analysis of the character, but also a three-dimensional performance in which he disappeared fully into the role. “The Fiery Priest” In Talks To Return For Second Season

Dec 7, 2022

The hit drama “The Fiery Priest” may be finally coming back for a highly-anticipated second season!

On December 7, a representative from SBS shared, “The production of ‘The Fiery Priest’ Season 2 is currently under discussion, but nothing has been confirmed yet.”

“The Fiery Priest,” which first aired in 2019, is about a Catholic priest with anger management issues and a cowardly detective who work together to solve a murder case.

Starring Kim Nam Gil, Honey Lee, and Kim Sung Kyun, the drama recorded a peak viewership rating of 22 percent. At the 2019 SBS Drama Awards, “The Fiery Priest” took home eight awards in total, including lead actor Kim Nam Gil receiving the Daesang (grand prize) for the first time in his career.

The drama teased its return with the message, “We will be back,” in the final episode, and after two years, expectation is rising on whether the hit drama will be able to return for Season 2.

[2022 Year in Review] Editors’ Picks

by DB Staff

editorspicks_2022.png

One of our favorite features at Dramabeans is our annual Editors’ Picks, which is the product of much voting, deep internal debate, hand-wringing – and of course, fangirling.

For some categories, the winner was abundantly clear. For others, it was a really close call. And for others yet, it was an unbreakable tie. So, rather than break any hearts while trying to break said tie, you’ll see we have two winners in the Best Romance category this year. Enjoy the post, and may 2023 be good to us all!

2022 Editors’ Picks

BEST ACTOR

EP_actor.jpg

Kim Nam-gil (Through the Darkness)

solstices: It’s no secret that Kim Nam-gil is a phenomenal actor, but he’s outdone himself with the role of Ha-young in Through the Darkness. In his capable hands, Ha-young truly embodied the title of the show, grappling with his sense of humanity in the face of the worst that other humans had to offer. Through his expressive gaze and subtle mannerisms, Kim Nam-gil’s nuanced portrayal grounded the show with a compelling emotional center. His despair was heart-wrenching, but never overwrought; he was intelligent, but not simply because he was a genius. Instead, we saw firsthand the tenacity and mental fortitude that got Ha-young this far — and how that eventually built up into too much pressure on his weary shoulders, because he’s ultimately just human.

There was so much depth to Kim Nam-gil’s insightful interpretation of Ha-young, giving us a multifaceted and realistic protagonist. It isn’t easy to have chemistry with a co-star, let alone a whole ensemble cast, but Kim Nam-gil managed that and more. Over the course of the show, the emotional toll of Ha-young’s job grew apparent through the gradual shift in his demeanor and tone of voice. As Ha-young faltered, our hearts lurched with him, and his sincerity had us rooting for him as he slowly learned to find the light at the end of the tunnel. There’s a reason Kim Nam-gil has been my unrivaled favorite actor for over a decade now, and this role definitely reaffirmed my admiration of his acting prowess.

Even though I'm not a fan of dramabeans any more, they definitely hit the nail on the head naming KNG as the best actor.

He will definetly win an award at SBS Drama Award for his role in Through the Darkness and I hope it is Daesang.

Dec 28, 2022

“Island” has unveiled eye-catching new character posters!

Based on the hit webtoon of the same name, TVING’s “Island” is a fantasy drama about a dark secret hidden on beautiful Jeju Island – and people who are fated to fight evil forces that are trying to destroy the world.

On December 28, “Island” released new character posters drawn by Yang Kyung Il, the artist behind the original webtoon. Each poster captures the drama actor contrasted with their original webtoon characters, highlighting the high level of synchronization.

Kim Nam Gil will star as Pan, an immortal monster hunter who has been protecting the world from evil demons for thousands of years. However, his identity tragically makes it impossible for him to get along with humans. Kim Nam Gil appears firm as he flashes a cold and confident look.

[Grand Prize] Kim Nam-gil, who reads the heart of evil, wins the grand prize! “I think acting should be humble.”

2022 SBS Drama Awards] 'Evil Mind' Kim Nam-gil, Grand Prize... 3 years after 'The Fiery Priest'

The grand prize candidates for the '2022 SBS Drama Awards' include Kim Nam-gil of 'Those Who Read the Evil Mind', Lee Joon-gi of 'Again My Life', Seo Hyun-jin of 'Why Oh Soo-jae?', Namgoong-min of 'Thousand Won Lawyer', and 'Police Station Next to the Fire Station'. Rae-Won Kim of <P> was named, and Nam-Gil Kim was named the Grand Prize winner. With this, Kim Nam-gil won the second grand prize trophy three years after 'The Fiery Priest' in 2019.

Kim Nam-gil, who took the stage to win the grand prize at the 2022 SBS Drama Awards on this day, said, “Actually, our drama aired at the beginning of the year, so I really didn’t expect it at all. As Namgoong-min said, when we looked only at the results, we hesitated a lot because the material for our drama was difficult and the popular part was lacking. Thank you to the viewers and fans who have loved and watched until the end without forgetting ‘Those Who Read the Heart of Evil’.”

Next, Kim Nam-gil said, “There were a lot of people who were especially grateful for this drama. Of course, I hesitated a lot, but like director Park Bo-ra said, 'Let's think only of the victims and their families'. The actors here were of course the best, and with the help of the staff and actors, I tried to make a good result.”

In addition, Kim Nam-gil said, “I am grateful to the director and writer who allowed me to worry about essential things, and writing is so good that I can’t remember the original work even though there is an original work.” I think it was because there were actors who played vicious criminals. It's not easy to play a villain. Of course, it is a role that can be shown well in terms of acting, but playing a felon is a tough choice without thinking about arbitrary things, but I am grateful for choosing it without hesitation and giving the best performance in the name of an actor. Looking at them in Hyeonjaeng, I felt that ‘Acting isn’t about being famous, there are a lot of really good actors in our country’.”

Lastly, Kim Nam-gil added, "I dedicate this award to the police officers who worked tirelessly day and night for our lives and safety, and to all the profilers across the country who always try to read the hearts of evil behind the scenes."

****

I just knew in my heart that he deserves it but I also knew that the ratings play a big part for receiving the award. I know all the nominees were good too but I was rooting for Kim Nam Gil . I am glad SBS did not take in consideration only the drama success through ratings. It was a surprise but well deserved winner.

Well deserved!  I also wasn't sure he'd win because he has won before, the drama was early in the year, and yeah, rating play a part.
