On October 21, MBC’s upcoming drama “The Spies Who Loved Me” held a press conference with director Lee Jae Jin and Shinhwa’s Eric, Yoo In Na, and Im Joo Hwan.

“The Spies Who Loved Me” is a rom-com about a woman who accidentally gets caught up in the world of espionage when both her husbands turn out to be undercover spies.

Yoo In Na stars as Kang Ah Reum, a wedding designer. Eric stars as Jeon Ji Hoon, her ex-husband and an Interpol agent who is undercover as a travel photographer. Im Joo Hwan stars as Derek Hyun, her current husband and a corporate spy who is undercover as a diplomat.

Director Lee Jae Jin said, “Spies are a concept that have been seen often in dramas and films, so the genre itself is not unusual, but our drama focuses on the spies themselves and the characters who help the spies. It’s hard to capture onscreen the relationship between an ex-husband and a current husband, but these two men are trying to save the female lead from various situations. It’s more of a rom-com than a spy drama.”

He praised the cast and said, “Moon Jung Hyuk (Eric) has a lot of ideas on set. He’s multitalented and good at everything. Yoo In Na is so good at capturing the key points of her character. Im Joo Hwan seems like someone who would be perfectionist and strict, but he has a surprisingly cute side.”

Hi chingus, I really loved the 2 episodes :D The 3 leads (that I love) are the perfect trio for this drama. But I think Lim Ju Hwan would play a bad guy (He is the best in vilain roles). I hope he does not **** her.

This drama is fast paced, the scenery was beautiful (I really have to go visiting Jejudo, which seems wonderful).

It's sad for the drop in ratings but I do not understand because the 2 first episodes were really good (my point of view which is subjective). There is suspense also.

In addition, I am not a specialist in Interpol and industrial spying so I had to read subtitles about theses subjects 2 times because they also use names likes Helmes... But that's not a problem because I can read the biographies of our 3 leads.

Next week, let us hope for a rise in ratings :)

I do enjoy the 2 episodes.  Though, while it is still quite interesting and fast pace, EP2 seems to be a tad less energetic than the 1st one.  That said, rating fluctuates often so I'm not concerned.  MBC doesn't have good rating lately so I didn't expect much.

Back to the drama. Just from what we've seen so far and the characters' descriptions, high chance Dereck might be directly or indirectly have something to do with Sophie's death.  I happened to see someone saying even if Dereck is a bad guy, she should stand by him because she's his wife.  How does everyone think of that?  I personally think it's really hard to be around someone that involved in my best friend's death, let alone sharing the same bed.  I'm saying that without expectation for Areum to get back to Jihoon.  Though, working together to find Sophie and now to find her murder might bring them closer.  I see people more interested in "who will get the girl/guy" (not just this drama) than how the drama will be.. it makes me wonder is that so important?  It doesn't matter to me who Areum end up with or none at all.  I guess because it's not a 100% typical rom-com that I don't really invest to the pairing much (even though I like Areum & Jihoon's chemistry so far)

I can't wait for EP3 because there are so much to anticipate for after 2 episode.

Before the airing of EP2, Eric posted in YT thanking for a good premiere and said that next week (this week now) when Derek Hyun comes out, it'll definitely be more fun. Please look forward to it~  :)

“How does it sound? Instead of doing what we like, how about we do what we don’t like together?” – Ji-hoon

Wishing good fortune to other people makes me happy. – Ah-reum

“That’s how we met again. At the island where we fell in love with each other. It was a karmic connection that brought us together. If it was destiny for two incomparable people to meet again, then this night is our destiny.” – Ah-reum

I managed to watch the second episode today.

My first impression. I like the drama . The romance and the spy thing works for me in this drama. I already sensed a strong vibe between the ex spouses and I want to see more of them. I think Derek killed Sophie and A Reum will be very affected when she will find out.

I already knew that A reum and Ji-Hoon will get closer while spending time together. She will discover who he really is and the misunderstanding from the past but she still will be angry. They still have feelings for each other and eventually will be together. A Reum loves her husband but she will gradually find out more informations about him.

I don`t necesarry want A Reum and Ji Hoon to get togheter but I like them and I want to see more of their dynamic. I find Lim Ju Hwan very good cast for the role of cold blooded spy. I anticipate a lot of confrontation between Derek and Ji Hoon.

The stars of MBC’s new drama “The Spies Who Loved Me” are getting along great behind the scenes!

“The Spies Who Loved Me” is a suspenseful romantic comedy about a woman who inadvertently gets caught up in the world of espionage. Yoo In Na stars in the drama as Kang Ah Reum, a wedding dress designer who gets married twice—and accidentally marries an undercover spy both times.

Shinhwa’s Eric plays Kang Ah Reum’s ex-husband Jun Ji Hoon, a charming and unpredictable secret agent who works for Interpol, while Im Joo Hwan plays her current husband Derek Hyun, a highly intelligent corporate spy with a competitive streak.

The production staff of “The Spies Who Loved Me” raved about the three leads’ teamwork and chemistry, which has not only been shining through in the drama, but has also been lighting up the set behind the scenes.

Releasing a set of fun behind-the-scenes photos from filming, the drama’s producers remarked, “The actors’ synergy and teamwork is amazing, as is the skillful acting of the stars, who have been tightly knitting together romance, espionage, action, and even comedy. The value of their teamwork will shine through even more with each new episode.”

They went on to tease, “[In this week’s episodes], the unpredictable espionage warfare of these three characters with hidden secrets will begin in earnest. Please look forward to it.”

Such an interesting drama so far absolutely love the leads so far.

The first thing I want to say is that Ah-reum is definitely still in love with her ex husband Ji-hoon and they look so good together! I hope that they will get back together in the end especially after she finds out about his real profession. AR does not seem to be that much into her current husband Derek Hyun, in my opinion he may just be a rebound from JH who she although pretends to hate, still loves him a lot. Also, everyone keeps saying that them meeting again is fate, foreshadowing their relationship.

Now Sophie had to be killed by Derek, although we have not seen much of him in the show so far, but I just do not trust him, there is just something about him that I find very off. It is as if he is pretending to be a good guy in front of his wife, but in reality he needs a cover? I mean it is cute he is giving her a car and doing it himself, but that is materialistic. I am just not getting good vibes from him.

I am very interested to see where this drama is going to go, next episode looks very interesting seems that AR will be getting herself in trouble again and JH will be there to spy and hopefully help her too. I mean JH did say that he knows nothing about AR because he was too busy to find anything out about her when they were married, for which I do not blame AR for divorcing him, I mean walking in on him being with another women (I'm sure it was not what it looked like), also not caring much about her always travelling away and returning with scars on his body which he is not able to explain. He was to blame for the divorce and I am hoping he can realise that and try again.

As soon as they’re gone, a fourth van arrives and Ah-reum personally holds an umbrella over the celebrity bride who exits the store wearing her wedding dress. The reporters realize that Ah-reum’s employees served as decoys just as the van with the real bride gets away undetected.

Nice seeing everyone's thought on the 2 episodes.  I am the same with @larus  I'm indifferent if Ahreum & Jihoon end up reconcile again at the end.  Though Ahreum obviously still has feeling for him despite all her harsh words.  I get that she's mad at him for with his line of work as 'travel writer' that often got injured somewhere in the Amazon and crocodiles LOL Anyone wants a stable marriage, not a widow so soon... on top of that, she thought he cheated on her with the other girl who is Jihoon's Interpol team mate.  I see why she wanted a divorce.

Her marriage with Derek some how gives off some artificial vibe to me...  what odd to me is he cares the fluff things like covering the sun for her when she gets in the car but let her changing the light bulbs and installing the chandelier herself is kinda weird.  I don't mind changing the light bulbs myself but those up high, no way I'm getting on the ladder by myself. Though Derek fixing up a car as anniversary gift for her is a nice gesture.

For Jihoon, I really like his relationship with the nun. It feel warm and genuine. The part he offered Ahreum to buy the ruined wedding gown (boy wasn't shy on haggling for a deep discount lol) and donated it to the church even though he isn't rich is altruisticI wonder if the nun knows he is an agent.  The fact that he wanted to help Ahreum from being scammed by those thugs was nice.  Jihoon still cares for the ex-wife when they meet again but he doesn't try to rekindle the flame. Ahreum called out Jihoon's name when her husband was meeting her at the police office was a big oops

I am still confuse who with what agent.  Hemes is the corporate spy central is it? Are Derek, his right-hand man Peter, Sophie and her ex-bf lawyer all working under Hemes? What is Fellix? Who's under this organization?

I see some speculation that Jihoon's boss, Director Ban, might be the killer... possible he seems a little off to me some how, the way he treated Jihoon... Show is telling me to wait and find out :)

2-part sub for the latest BTS.  I'm not sure what MBC is doing by deleting behind the scene and blocking YT videos.  It's surprising no one even mention the slap when the episode was on air. If it was the other way around, I'm sure there would be an uproar lol  Both Eric and Inna are professional, especially Eric.  He was telling her to hit harder in practice.. and then after the slap the told an apologetic Inna it's okay it's okay and gave a a pat her on the shoulder. Seeing the staff covering his mouth right after that slap, it must hurt pretty bad...

Yeah, I don`t obsess who is ending with who but I know that A Reum, and Ji Hoon will be together. :) Ji Hoon shouldn't have gotten married in this conditions but I guess he fell in love and thought he could handle the double life. I hope this time he wil say the truth or he will be discovered because Ji Hoon will try to catch Derek. Of course A Reum will find out the truth about both. It is obvious that both have lingering feelings. It is hard for him to not be able to tell the truth and clear misunderstandings and I get a feelings that he regreats that. He should retired after this mission. Enough with dangering his life as a secret agent.

New stills for this week episode.  Looks like team Interpol put on surveillance at Sophie's funeral. Ahreum's injury must be from Sophie's ex-bf who probably thought she was killed by Derek

MBC has given a glimpse of Yoo In Na and Eric in the upcoming episode of “The Spies Who Loved Me”!

“The Spies Who Loved Me” is a suspenseful romantic comedy about a woman who inadvertently gets caught up in the world of espionage. Yoo In Na stars as Kang Ah Reum, a wedding dress designer who gets married twice — and accidentally marries an undercover spy both times.

Shinhwa’s Eric plays Kang Ah Reum’s ex-husband Jun Ji Hoon, a charming and unpredictable secret agent who works for Interpol, while Im Joo Hwan plays her current husband Derek Hyun, a highly intelligent corporate spy with a competitive streak.

Spoilers

Previously, Jun Ji Hoon and Kang Ah Reum met for the first time in five years since their divorce. Kang Ah Reum, who was going to congratulate her friend Sophie (Yoon So Hee) on her marriage, ran into Jun Ji Hoon on Jeju Island, the place they had fallen in love. Sensing danger, Sophie, who is both Kang Ah Reum’s friend and the NIS agent Jun Ji Hoon is looking for, fled the scene. Hiding his identity, Jun Ji Hoon and Kang Ah Reum tried to chase down Sophie. However, Sophie ended up dying, which shocked everyone. At this point, Derek Hyun appears, and Kang Ah Reum continues thinking about what Sophie had said.

In the new stills, Jun Ji Hoon and Kang Ah Reum appear to be pursuing the mystery of Sophie’s death. Kang Ah Reum attends Sophie’s funeral mass, and she looks determined despite her sadness. Meanwhile, Jun Ji Hoon looks on at Kang Ah Reum. He had been ordered by Ban Jin Min (Kim Tae Woo), Director of Asian Affairs at Interpol, to investigate Kang Ah Reum.

the-spies-who-loved-me-111.jpg

Jun Ji Hoon’s reason for chasing down Kang Ah Reum despite his mentioning that she doesn’t know anything is something to watch for in the upcoming episode. Kang Ah Reum is also on the hunt for clues although her forehead seems to be bleeding. Viewers can look forward to the tension between Kang Ah Reum, who begins to seriously look into the mystery of Sophie’s death, and Jun Ji Hoon, who failed to prevent her from dying.

3 Things We Loved & 1 Thing We Hated About The Premiere Of “The Spies Who Loved Me”

ca1d4f5f529c4511864f4361ab7d9c0b.jpeg?s=

Oct 27, 2020

Any “Goblin” fans out there? Our favorite Grim Reaper-Sunny couple were star-crossed lovers in “Goblin,” then reunited in “Touch Your Heart” for their fourth(?) reincarnation. But as we all know, they only get four lifetimes together, so now, The Powers That Be have separated them… onto two separate networks! Lee Dong Wook is off romancing his first love, Ah Eum, in “Tale of the Nine-Tailed,” whereas Yoo In Na is now Ah Reum, a woman caught between two men. Come to think of it, these two female characters have veeery similar names. And these two shows are airing on the same night too. Is the universe trying to tell us something?

Okay, maybe not. Back to reality.

“The Spies Who Loved Me” is a rom-com that is centered around Kang Ah Reum (Yoo In Na), a wedding dress designer who’s on her second marriage. She suddenly finds herself caught up in the world of espionage because her husband, Derek Hyun (Im Joo Hwan), happens to be an undercover spy. Worse yet, so is her ex-husband, Jeon Ji Hoon (Eric).

Here are three things we loved and one thing we hated about the premiere:

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

LOVED: The interesting set-up

We’ve seen shows that start off with couples being strangers then eventually falling in love. We’ve seen shows where couples are in love then break up for someone else. We’ve also seen shows that have exes find each other and fall back in love. But “The Spies Who Loved Me” trumps all that and gives us a married couple. Who will undoubtedly get divorced. And the wife will get back with the ex-husband. Talk about “it’s complicated.”

Kang Ah Reum is a wedding gown designer who never truly believed in marriage. That is, until she meets Jun Ji Hoon, a travel writer and fellow-“I’m-going-to-stay-a-bachelor.” They coincidentally meet each other at Jeju island, where they begin a whirlwind romance that eventually leads to them both trying something they aren’t really confident in — marriage. Fast forward a few years, and this marriage has dissolved, leaving Ah Reum even more resistant towards the idea of marriage. That is (you guessed it), until she meets another man, a diplomat by the name of Derek Hyun. What Ah Reum doesn’t know, however, is she apparently has a very specific type. Both the ex-husband and the current husband are spies — Ji Hoon is an Interpol agent, whereas Derek is an industrial spy.

The-Spies-who-loved-me-Eric-gif-2.gif

An Interpol agent who… moonlights as a stripper? You’ll just have to watch the show to find out!

This whole set-up is pretty interesting and frankly it’ll be intriguing to see how the writers write themselves out of this complicated situation. Will they have to make Derek the bad guy to justify Ah Reum going back to Ji Hoon? Will Ah Reum inevitably cheat on Derek? How will knowing the truth change Ah Reum’s perspective on both men? Or will Ah Reum just kick both men to the curb and become a spy herself? The possibilities are endless!

LOVED: The falling in and out of love (in one episode!)

It usually takes a while for a drama to build a romance up, but for “The Spies Who Loved Me,” we dive head in first with the falling-in-love portion. The show gives us a succinct cut of how Ji Hoon and Ah Reum meet, fall in love, date, decide to get married, and with plenty of skinship thrown in for good measure too. And we buy it. Everything is done so beautifully (the aesthetically gorgeous Jeju landscape is a major bonus) and Eric and Yoo In Na share such natural chemistry, you can’t help but be swept up in this whirlwind romance of Ji Hoon and Ah Reum’s.

Even if she would not be OK with his job and wanted to divorce, it would have been better then letting her in the dark. Then it ould have been her choice and he would not felt guilty or regretful for something he did not do.

They separated but both still had feelings for the other. Even today, those feelings are still there.

So I finally caught up with this drama, it's not my cup of tea ( in general the dramedy  spy type) and I started solely due to Inna . Im actually sold . Aside few things here and there the drama is good , there is a good story that seems written well and with plan.

The story is not too Melo or too comedic (aside the towel fighting) , they don't force so much the romance and they allow the female character so far to be independent unit without making the story about a love triangle. There is chemistry between Inna and Eric , they play each other well . He allows her to carry heavy emotional scenes without drugging his character down. Even Derek's character is not too "dark" and carries a mystery around him. They keep certain level of secret plot underneath ready to unravel .

The supporting cast are good actors , even the more young ones.

One of my fears was that they will make Ah Reum's character pinning for ex or make everything cringe. So much the story is slowly building the tempo. Sure the female character is clueless but not clueless enough to bang your head against the wall. Yoo Inna is really underrated actress and has been typecasted in roles that she outgrow in acting range. I feel Goblin showed aspects of her development and range but TYH kinda scratched the surface and didn't allow her to come out of her shell . She is truly good In rom coms but I feel this drama is taking her on the right direction. Not alone the fluffy - cute girl who everyone loves but her brain cells are hiding behind her smile. She is smart, independent . not over the head and if you have watched her dramas you can see how differently she portrays this character.

I like Eric's character , he keeps duality between his real self and the one he masks to his ex wife . He is not majorly written as tsundere , you can see his struggles but also wanna slap him for lying to his SO and probably *in my opinion* forcing a divorce with "faking" cheating with his co-worker .

The story is refreshing in terms of how they approach the "triangle" , Derek's character is labeled as sort of shady but even there you are not sure who is the "bad guy" because we have two spy agencies , a murder , a clueless so far person of interest who slowly will focus on uncovering the fact she married two spies. I hope they kinda switch to Melo but not too Melo in the reveal. Inna is super ace in scenes like that , the scene where she slaps her ex was very good .

Im glad they keep each character connected to each other , but they keep them as independent unit . They allowing you to root for the main couple but it's not innocent love anymore . It has issues that need resolving , one of the things I enjoy is how they build their story as if the flashbacks starting the romance backwards .

The main three have good chemistry without forcing an awkward triangle , their acting is solid . The story has a solid plot and it balances the comedy and seriousness in a good level but it loses points sometimes because some scenes switch and you are not sure if its meant to be funny , cute or serious. It's not bad , its not overly dramatic or Melo or too funny and cringey . They have solid writing, cinematography and directing . The dialogue and progress is steady.

Im looking forward to see how everything will build up and hope for scenes with YIN that push her out of the usual acting she had so far. She misses action throughout her career so its nice to see her even in small action scenes . I hope her character turns out to be the key player and not the damsel in distress and her ex - present husbands have to follow her lead towards the ending.

I hope they will give rights of the drama to more streaming services , we live in year 2020 where dramas are hot topic beyond SoKor and it deserves more attention.

@ninjayejin I love your post.

Thanks to others too. I agree with @larus and others if the OTP do not get together it is fine.

Yoo In Ah is great and she is the QUEEN of rom coms and i look forward to her being challenged in this role.

I love Eric Mun and the rest of the cast are great thus far.

As mentioned by others, this is a much WELCOME relief of all the other HIGH Drama and intense stories break I NEED in my drama rotation.

But our secret spy has to keep in mind that he’s on a mission, and lives are more important than his failed marriage.

EPISODE 2 RECAP

Spies02-00014.jpg

Something goes wrong at the bachelorette party, and before she gets a chance to meet with Ji-hoon, bride Sophie finds herself fleeing with a man dressed as a security guard hot on her heels. Her pursuer knocks down Ah-reum, then Ji-hoon follows them both, dropping his cowboy hat next to Ah-reum. The “security guard” fires a gun at Ji-hoon, then continues after Sophie.

Ji-hoon goes back and sees Ah-reum, and as fireworks explode in the sky, they think in tandem: “That’s how we met again. We were once married. Under pretty fireworks, with the sound of a gunshot…”

Ah-reum notices that Ji-hoon’s arm is bleeding, and the blood is dripping onto the veil he’s holding in his hand (nice symbolism there). He’s the first to ask if she’s okay, and she exclaims over his arm. He says a pervert with a knife nicked him, and he explains his shirtless vested ensemble by saying that it’s for a part-time job, hee.

They hear a phone vibrating and find Sophie’s bag on the ground. Ji-hoon puts the clues together, that Ah-reum is friends with the source who was to contact him here. Ah-reum answers the phone, and a man says that they caught the “stalker” bothering the bride (the Helmes lawyer who’s in love with Sophie and who tried to convince her to let him help her).

Confused, Ah-reum tells Ji-hoon what the man said, and he asks what her friend does for a living. Ah-reum tells him that Sophie is a scientist, and as one of the security guards catches up to them, Ji-hoon smoothly pockets Sophie’s phone.

The lawyer, who goes by the name PETER (Jeon Seung-bin), is tied up in the security station. He manages to work one hand free, then he tips forward to let his pen/taser fall out of his shirt pocket. When one of the guards leans down to get it, Peter kicks him over, smashes a foot into the other guard’s crotch, rolls to pick up his taser, then throws himself out a window, still tied to his chair. Welp, he’s definitely not just a lawyer.
