@Yeekrfan2 Thanks for posting. My biggest problem with the ending was the Ha Ram reset, but it looks like that's what the writer also intended, so I can't bl ame the director for it. For Black, him disappearing completely and us just going on with HR's story would not be satisfying either, so I'm glad the director showed that last scene.

It just seems to me there were a myriad of satisfying ways to end this drama, tragic or happy or bittersweet, consistent with the world-building and plot, yet somehow the least satisfying one was chosen by the writer.  Weird.

@Yeekrfan2 Thanks for posting the original ending script summary.. It's a mystery how can Leo did all those things, like stopping the accident..and make Ha Ram save the children..it will be more puzzling for me if they went to the original ending though..I prefer the director's ending adding more detail. Ha Ram and Black being together.

Is there something wrong with Soompi because everytime I hit enter or backspace, chunks of texts disappear.

Anyhow... I caught this on Netflix a couple of weeks ago before I went on holidays so I'm late to the party. Really enjoyed the first episode but not two or three. Glad I persevered though because everything subsequent to four has been very intriguing. The show suffered from the introduction of too many characters initially and they weren't well presented. Too frenetic.

SSH is great in this. Black's evolution as he interacts with the people around is very well done and believable. 444's relationship with the Joseon reaper and the rapper reaper is a lot of fun.

I'm up to Episode 10 and am becoming much more invested in the characters and the relationships.

That ending sucked! It doesn't make sense and is very illogical. If his existence was removed, how come he was there to meet her soul when she passed on? How did Joon not existing have that big of an effect to the extent that Ha Ram's father did not die and was not possessed by a Grim Reaper? What is the weird Halloween and Christmas halloween are Leo and  Ha Ram celebrating?

Maybe it's just me, but I would have preferred an ending where Ha Ram learnd about everything - the truth about her lineage, Joon and 444, Moo Gang, etc. Perhaps, 007 can tell her everything (more on 007 later). Joon/444 could have received the punishment of perishment instead of having his total existence removed. Ha Ram could have continued on with her life. After her and Soo Wan's talk about Man Soo sacrificing his life to keep her safe and that the best way to repay that sacrifice is to take care of herself and go on living, I don't think it likely for her to kill herself. The best way to repay everyone's sacrifice is for her to continue living to an old age. She could marry Man Soo (or Leo but leaning more towards Man Soo). She may not have romantic feelings for him initially, but who's to say she won't develop and fall for him eventually? Man Soo has been there for her and had willingly sacrificed himself for her numerous times. He had been there to help her try and save lives, not that they were always successful, but the intent was there. For the record, I'm not a Ha Ram and Man Soo shipper, but them ending up together does make sense to an extent. And the drama can have it's happy ending that the director was gunning for.

As for 007, I just realized how pitiful his character truly is. He's been around for hundreds of years and still hasn't moved on. He must have had countless of partners that has already moved on, yet he's still stuck with Grim Reaper duty. Will he ever get to rest? At first, I believed that there must be something sinister about him since he seems to know so much, but in the end, I guess he's just this old soul who wanted Joon and Rapper to find their peace. I wouldn't even be surprised had he been Rapper's reaper as well.

Apparently it seems that all my posts need to have a spoiler tag in them not just for The Secret Of My Love due to their length and all. Thanks for editing my post Mod for letting me know this fact.

Anyway now on to the show itself. After reading the recaps from dramabeans I am still going with my initial verdict that overall the story was good but it could have a few more things better explained or so and the ending wasn’t great. Which I will get down to again.

Spoiler

So overall I am going to end up giving this show 3.5 out 5 stars/points. A total of one mark clearly is taken away because of the ending and because things could be slightly better explained which I will be getting into next. The final 0,5 point is taken out because I just didn’t like some of the crude humor in the show. For some I could let it slide as it was more of a one time thing but not when it repeated. For instance when Black ordered food at the crime scene and that piece of food fell near the victim and he goes ahead and eats it like it was nothing. It was gross enough that his teammates even reacted to it but since it was a one time deal I could ignore it. Infact I even felt bad when Black had no idea about human society and was behaving like a pervert. I sort of felt bad for Moo Gang because It was his reputation that was being affected even though the real Moo Gang was dead and all. But then we had scenes where he teleported to the toilet atleast two times and more. While that bit was explainable and all it was that he just had to run into that one detective that always needed to use the toilet and all. At this point Black always seemed to drag him out without even letting him wash his hands and all. I found this both totally unhygienic as well as gross. Infact if I recall correctly the guy even wiped his unwashed hands on either his own clothes or was it Blacks’. The first time was bad enough for me but having to watch it more than once just irked me to no end. Though one could ignore this fact and all.

Now on to the things that I wish were either better explained or I totally missed said things and then that would be my fault.

First of all I wish they better explained the power set of Reapers and their limitations. They are stronger than humans but just how strong. They can teleport from one place to another. Do they have a limit in a day and if so how many times or better yet what distance can they cover or what do they base that on? For instance we know that Reapers can only teleport to a place that has an unlocked door and all. So can they just think of a place and they are automatically dropped to the closest area (unlocked door) from that point. If this is the case are there any limits involved once again. For instance if they just have to think of said place but don’t know the exact location can they still get there. That sort of did happen when Black tried to find out where Haram may have been kidnapped and all. But if he could do that for her why couldn’t he just focus on being transported to where Loser was. Does this not work when a Reaper is inside a body? Is the Reaper spirit masked that it can’t be detected? It would have been nice to know.

Then we have Haram and her abilities to see shadows around people that are going to die. Sounds simple sure. Unfortunately, we have her interact with Leo a few times and yet she never saw Loser inhabiting his body why was that. Atleast when it was with Black he always wore Black so they could explain that but Leo didn’t always wear Black so this shouldn’t work. Do her powers get negated if a person has even a tiny bit of black and if Haram sees that her powers become negated. I think that might have been hinted when she rescued that boy who tool lessons from Spider-Man. When she checked on him she couldn’t see any shadows on him but we were shown that he had a black sock on him. If this was the case it would have been better if they told us this at some point. Perhaps this was the reason why Loser could stay hidden for so long.

Then we have things in the story that don’t really make much sense but we have to go along with it. Such things are as follows.

Since we were talking about Loser earlier let’s continue with him for the time being. We see him roaming the streets of Seoul without any worry and that was the reason that he nearly got caught by Black. Why in the world would he even leave Leo’s body like that and go out in Spirit Form. It wasn’t like he didn’t know that he would be a wanted Reaper for abandoning his post and all. Not only that but is even leaving his body unattended like that even safe. What if someone came and found Leo’s body like that. They would freak out and call the ambulance and hospital and then perhaps freak out once again when Loser decided to return into Leo’s body and all. Just hope that the person who found him didn’t have a weak heart or they may just end up with a heart attack. L) :)

Still one has to even wonder in the first place why Loser was out like that anyway. Was he planning on becoming a Pervert or try and watch his sister in secret. Not that would help if other reapers were on the search for him. They would notice him and give chase. So that was a total mystery to me which would be nice if they explained it.

Then we have the chase that Black and Loser had that followed after Black spots him. We see Loser attempting to teleport but having to ditch it because Black is nearly on him and when he does try it again Black has beaten him to it and all. Regardless of that my point is that since Loser is dead and a Ghost why doesn’t he simply take a short cut to lose Black such as walk through buildings and backtrack or get on the other side. He doesn’t have any limitations unlike Black who would have to either walk all around or teleport. Loser on the other hand could also just walk in a building in ghost mode and use one of the doors there and get back to Leo’s body and be safe. We know that Reapers can walk through stuff because Black was doing that when he showed up and was looking for Loser the first time he went missing and all. So I don’t understand why Loser didn’t do the same. Is this perhaps a power that Reapers at a certain level can do it. Do they have to be active Reapers for a set amount of time before this ability is granted to them? I guess we could perhaps forgive Loser for not thinking straight because he just died recently so he still thinks and acts like a human and even when he returned he has been living in another human and all thus not realizing his full potential and all.

Then after this we have the video recording on Leo’s laptop that was what made Black figure out where Loser was actually hiding. My question then would be why was Leo even recording that on laptop in the first place. It showed him having drugs which would have been bad for him if it ever got out so it makes no sense to me why even record something like that. Sure it is a plot in the story for Black to finally realize not only the truth about where Loser was hiding but also about who killed him and all but in real life it makes little to no sense to me. So I say this part is a fail. Can’t even find an excuse to defend it. If anyone else has a good reason please do inform me.

I know that I had something else to add into the above points but I seem to have forgotten them for the time being. If I do remember them I will add them.

So let’s now move onto the original ending and my thoughts regarding it. That ending is slightly better in the sense that we get a few more details about why we go the final ending and why Haram got to live a normal childhood and all. Like I said the only way for that to have happened in the first place Is if her parents never had that accident in the first place. Since Leo prevented that well and good. It would have actually been better if they added these things to the final ending I am sure that it would have just taken a few more extra minutes or so and we could live with that. Though in real life that might not be possible since other shows would have to follow and it would be cutting into their time. I guess if they cut a few adds it might have worked. Regardless of all this I still say that the ending was flawed and it still had pretty much the same issues that I brought up earlier. Clearly the writer didn’t think this through.

Let’s say that Loser saved the day because he was in Leo’s body and since he was a Reaper he remembered Black and thus could keep his promise to look after Haram. Unfortunately, there is a small problem with this theory. Even if I were to go with the fact that Leo used a drug overdose when he was young after watching his father’s video and all and feeling guilty and all the problem here is that Loser should still have been alive at this point. Remember Loser didn’t fall of that bridge till much later on after he bumped into Leo and started to work for him and all. So this would mean that Loser was still alive and had no real reason to kill himself then. This itself is a problem for me. Not only that but Loser helps Haram save the day when it came to that accident and all.

This brings us to another small problem which would be that since Black decided to sacrifice himself by having himself written out of existence the Reapers would have been one Reaper short. A problem sort of. I guess they could make up for this by saying that since Haram’s father didn’t take over her real father’s body due to the accident he was still serving Reaper duty and all thus there wasn’t much change in that regard. Fine I will give them that but what about the other Reapers that couldn’t join the Ranks and all the souls that they escorted back to the afterlife such as The Hip Hop Reaper and all. If the accident never happened that means that he never died and his body wasn’t in said wreckage. If that was the case, he never became a Reaper. Not only that but I am sure that incident may have caused a few more Reapers to join the group and all but that was all prevented thanks to the actions of Loser. This I see as a problem.

On top of all this we have in the final episode Black jumping of he cliff. I wonder whose Dash Cam recorded that and why they didn’t bring it to the police earlier. Regardless of that I think I am going to blame him being responsible for Haram’s attempt at suicide here. Had she died that day and her history not altered I think that it would be fair to blame her death on him for a change. I mean if he was waiting for the Death Squad to take him then just go wait in your house or something I am sure they would be bound to find him or like have Joseon Reaper aka Reaper 007 bring the Death Squad Reapers to him and case closed. No one would have been the wiser in regards to this. Unfortunately, he had to not only jump of a cliff but at the same time get captured on camera doing it. Now I understand the reason why he chose the cliff as that was the place where he sort of died or where is body was. Unfortunately for Haram that must have been torture. First to find out that the boy she loved probably died because of her and then the man she fell in love with committed suicide for reasons unknown. Was he so tired of her that he had to lie to her and kill himself. Had Black still been alive she might still have had hope or she may have continued to live but to realize that people that she loved and cared about seem to die around her would be enough to drive her of the edge. Though I am sure people might be willing to forgive Black or ignore this fact. Not me.

Speaking of Black I would also wish they had bothered to explain his ability to not die so easily a bit better. Sure they explained that he couldn’t leave a body if it belonged to him in the first place or I guess if a part of your original body was in another body and a Reaper took it over. Still I would like to know just how much time it took for him to recover from such a serious injury and all. We have seen him stabbed, drowned and run over by a car. Yet he recovered from said injuries eventually. I kind of forgot how he ended up in the hospital after Evil 100 Year Old Granny Reaper (creepy doctor) ran him over. I guess I will have to watch said episode again. But let’s get back to him recovering from said injuries. We also see him shooting his own brains ou but to no avail. Now what was strange for me was that whenever he usually died there was a recovery period for him but when he was shooting at his head it was like nothing happened to him. Not even the bullet coming out at the other end. What happened there and why wasn’t he getting affected. Even if he was trapped in said body shouldn’t he have gone in recovery mode for some time atleast.

So like I said I felt the drama had issues that it couldn’t resolve properly but if overlooked it was quite good.

Now people have brought up the ending scene itself and what a Christmas Halloween was etc also Haram ending up with Leo instead of perhaps Man Soo. I think she may have very well ended up with Man Soo but from what I read in the subs Leo wasn’t her husband. I think as her protector and friend he stood by her but they didn’t marry each other. Will have to recheck the lines for confirmation though and will get back to you in regards to that. As for Black being written out of existence and the miracle I am going to go with is that while Joon was indeed written out of human existence the Reapers still remembered who he was. I guess they weren’t full affected by this. We have to remember that Reapers work on a totally different rule set. For instance everyone seems to think that lost soul Reapers are Pure Reaper Descendants and all and seem to respect them while the Reapers that have committed suicide are looked down upon by the so called Pure Reaper Descendants and all. No one seems to question them or if a Reaper changes their appearance It isn’t found all that suspicious such as when Hip Hop Reaper changed to his true kid form. Black simply questioned why he decided to look as a kid but didn’t find it all that odd or further question him in regards to that. Am pretty sure that Lost Soul Reapers may even have false memories implanted in them to think that they are Pure Reapers and all. So in this sense it would make somewhat sense that while the humans would forget Joon because he never existed in the first place but since Reapers lived in a different plane of existence they might not be effected by this. Now what is Halloween but a time where dead spirits walk the earth and can come back. So what probably happened was that since Loser was a Reaper he could easily see the Reapers that had come for Haram thus he knew that their time was finally up and that she was going to die anyway so it wouldn’t make any difference if he told her the story of the Reaper that was forgotten by everyone else. Now what happened next is that Haram didn’t remember Black exactly but her spirit resonated with his like her body seemed to somehow remember Black but not her. He then gave her the bracelet that she made for Joon and that may have finally made her realize that the reason she was so affected by the story was because it was her story and the Reaper was probably Black. The miracle here was probably that the Afterlife finally felt bad for both of them and thus permitted Black to escort Haram herself. Thus as a spirit he could return to the world of the living. This would make it Halloween miracle that Loser was probably referring to Haram.

Frankly as I said instead of Black being written out of existence I would have preferred him and Haram chasing after Rogue Reapers in the next season that is if Haram did end up dying. I guess it could be his punishment as well as his reward.  Also what was the point of him going all Rambo on Big Boss Man and the hired Hitman. I guess him doing a stage fatality on the hired Hitman could be perhaps given a slight pass but for Big Boss Man he killed him in cold blood and what was even the purpose of that if he was written out of existence then those two would come back to life anyway and continue their crimes. In other words, a total waste. Sure it made him eligible for the maximum punishment and all but I think it was a waste. Perhaps he thought that Haram having a normal childhood would be worth it and all but at the expense of other people I am not sure that Haram would have been okay with that.

@jjoy84 I am glad to see another person that feels bad for Reaper 007 and agrees with what I posted in regards to him being around for ages yet being unable to move on. Though perhaps it might not be so easy for him depending on when exactly he passed away. If he was a recent death, then it might be still possible but on the other hand he actually died when he was still in the Joseon Era then it might be a bit impossible for him to get his soul to rest in peace. Someone would have to actually find his remains if any still remain at this time which I have my doubts. So perhaps some sort of Archeologist comes across a mystery find and there are some clues who the person was I don’t think that his soul will be finding any peace anytime soon unfortunately. Then again we could perhaps have Season 2 where we look into his past and perhaps a Reaper decides to pay him back somehow. Perhaps he takes over a human body and while all the other Reapers are searching for him this Reaper Is actually trying to find a way to help Reaper 007 get his well-deserved peace so the body that he has taken over perhaps belongs to some well-respected professor or so and while using the clues that he has obtained sets out on his mission. Infact while we are at it lets make 100 Year Old Evil Granny as Reaper 007 rival who will have the clue to his real identity and all thus we can have the Reapers trying to chase down this Reaper who is now on the run as well but at the same time is also searching for 100 Year Old Evil Granny as well. I think that we could have an interesting story line this way. Then again I have no idea what I am talking about now since it is already 1 AM over here and I am starting to feel sleepy and all.

So anyway take care all of you and keep posting so that I can look forward to reading them and try answering questions in regards to the drama if possible. So till next time. :)

It occurred to me half way through this that just about everyone (except for Ha Ram and Mad Dog perhaps) in this show lies, or at the very least prevaricates in some fashion. The entire drama is quite literally built on the fact that everyone knows things but for reasons only known to themselves, they are not particularly forthcoming with the facts. This, I imagine, is why the show comes across as being rather more convoluted and layered than it probably is. Nothing that anyone says can be or should be taken at face value. That's clear enough.

The approach taken by the drama does feel fresh although the initial set up was a bit wobbly, ie. the incorporation of police procedural with supernatural life-death elements. There are clearly multiple levels of villains and their motives aren't always clear as is the degree of culpability of their deeds. The sexual exploitation of teenage girls seems to be at the heart of the multitude of sins that pervade right through the drama including the insurance fraud.

The death of Mad Dog hit hard which was a surprise seeing that my early impressions of the character wasn't brimming with affection. But following him on his journey and bearing witness to his dogged investigative disposition, I warmed up to him eventually even while his hotheadedness was still a dominant character trait.

I wasn't sure about the romance at first but SSH's performance was convincing enough to draw me into it eventually. Although I liked GAR, I think that HR was a thankless character to play on some level. The bleakness surrounding her led to this reckless need to leap into the frying pan and into the fire constantly which then caused the character to fall into deeper doom and gloom because she would second guess her decisions to intervene. It was a Catch-22 situation that she was trapped in. The previous 444 grim reaper's decision to take over the body of a human being had far-reaching consequences that went beyond his own happiness.

The ending, although not outright offensive, was put together rather sloppily. The showrunners were obviously aiming to bring across a particular message and in so doing, it glossed over some major question marks over the reset of HR's life. No doubt, the writer/director was trying to be existential but to the point where they flushed basic storytelling logic down the toilet. It is the trend these days in movies and dramas to trot the old mantra that "X isn't really gone if he/she is in our hearts and minds" but this drama takes it to a whole new level of disjointed sentimentalizing. I get it. Grim Reaper Joon 444 isn't really gone if someone remembers him. As soon as she remembered him, he was back. I don't necessarily have an issue with that. But where the devil did the red bead thread that was used to trigger HR's memories come from if he didn't exist in the first place? Which part of 444 didn't exist? Which part did? Kim Joon? Grim Reaper 444? Did they meet as children? Did none of the ugly stuff with the rich, dirty old men not happen just because 444 did nont exist? The ending of Black has a similar problem I had with Tunnel's ending but the glossing over of inconsistencies is much more egregious here. At least Tunnel was a time slip drama from start to finish but Black abruptly went from being a supernatural drama to being a time shift drama in a matter of minutes.

Of late there seems to be a pattern in K dramas regarding the enormity of victimhood that only a reset seems possible. I understand that there are stories to be told in that but I'd like them played out in a much more serious fashion.

To resolve some of the problems of the last few minutes, there really needs to be at the very least another episode or better still, an entire season to demonstrate how HR's life would be so drastically different.

I have just binged the show over the weekend and have been so upset by the ending that it's taken me a few days to get over. Some comments on possible resolutions and an alternative ending which could have made everyone happy, for your reading pleasure:

The Red String of Destiny

As Black/Joon stands to be judged, he chooses to be forgotten, and the sentence is issued in stone. However, in the midst of it being meted out, the red string bracelet glows and protects Black, because it has tied him indelibly with Ha Ram. The sentence is partially meted out, with everyone forgetting Black - except for Ha Ram. Her life is reset without him (her parents still die, and she is still half-Reaper half-human), and she lives a happy and full life, but she has always been looking for him in the shadows. Only when she passes into death does she see him, waiting as an orphaned and forgotten soul waiting for her all these years. They walk hand-in-hand into Paradise, with her following her Reapers (007 and 419) - she leads him, because he doesn't know where to go.

The Missing Soul/Old Lady

So what happened with her? She had a hard life because she was abused by her husband, and then turns murderous shadow, and then...? Suggested resolution would be for 007 to be her husband, whom she killed in self-defence, and burned and scattered his ashes so he could never find his remains.

Leo/Loser

He lives to the end of Leo's life and dies and then is sentenced to 100 years of training new Reapers.

Soo Wan and Byeong Tae

She didn't go to Chicago and they both got caught by Mssing Finger Assassin, and...? Both died? No happy ending for Joon's mom? Grrr.

I've seen up to episode 15 and read the episode recaps for episodes 16-18 (I really have low EQ). I'm not impressed with the ending but I would still finish this because overall, this series is still an 8/10 for me. One of the best if it weren't for the messed up ending. I'm not sure why the writer/director ended this the way they did, I wish they've written a better one. One without Black being erased from Haram's memory. I'm also wondering if Leo was wearing black every time he interacted with Haram since Haram didn't see the shadow in him. The ending was messy but I really loved the events leading up to it.

BTW, I love the big black sunglasses that Haram wore. I wonder what band it was.

I've just finished the drama and the ending really ruin all the story. Before watching a fantasy drama, especially those telling about after-life, I am always ready to get a sad ending. That's normal. No need to force the happy ending. I do not like both writer and director ending. So I think I prefer if Haram just keep move on with her life. Killing herself at nearly the end of the drama was really disappointing (we all know how many dramas try to send a message for not doing this action). So what's the point of message when Haram and Leo saved the writer's life from the rooftop if at the end she did it?

And the sudden antagonist at the end of episode? Hah! And the assassin, whom he works for? Oh Manho? Kim Yong suk? or the mayor?

I have so many to write but I guess all of you already expressing my confusion.

I just want to ask.. If loser possessed Leo's body before Moo Gang died (the scene at the hotel), then how come Ha Ram never saw a shadow inside Leo when they have seen each other a lot of times after that? I'm pretty sure he was wearing white when they saved that suicidal writer.

The ending sucked. Her previous drama also had a bad ending (GG14D). She needs to work with a great director next time. But I dont think I'll watch her future dramas. Already got dissapointed twice.

Loser & Black/444 are her reapers and she had explained she can't see her own shadow of death...so no matter how she can't see them regardless of the clothing which is a theory that was came up by those ignorant reapers themselves - 444, 007 & 416

Off topi:. Does OCN have their own awards like SBS MBC KBS?

I'm not sure, but I don't think they do. I don't think cable channels have year-end awards similar to the big three. The only awards ceremony in a cable channel that I can recall was that of TVN's tvN10 Awards which was part of their ten-year anniversary celebration.

I was really disappointed with the ending of this drama. I was (more or less) on board until the last 15 minutes or so, and I would have preferred a dark ending instead of a non-sensical one. I'm trying to interpret it as a dream sequence, something 444 wished before disappearing...

Another AWESOME MV of Ha Ram & Black!  I really agreed to the creator comment - "This drama has more plot twist and turns than the love child of a rollercoaster and a maze"  With that being said, this might be my favorite Korean drama of 2017. It was a very interesting drama. Right from episode one, it was intense. And you can be halfway through this drama and still not understand a thing. This story is a setup for a huge mystery but the more they revealed of the mystery, the more confused I got.

Last December, OCN hosted its 2017 virtual awards for its six dramas: Black, Tunnel, Voice, Save Me, Bad Guys 2: city of evil, & Meloholic.

Also, Black will aired in Philippine this January and in Japan This February. For those in Singapore, I saw an announcement that Song Seung Heon will be hosted his event this Sunday at the Cathy.  I'm glad OCN has been doing so awesome last year giving us these amazing dramas and combining them into its comic, Original Sin.

Congratulation to Black and its winning awards. PS. Unfortunately, I can't read or translate Korean writing but it'll a great pleasure if someone could translate them so that everyone could understand.
