I want to talk about dogs and wolves, well okay, not all dogs but ONE dog in particular... Wang So. More specifically I want to deal with the dog metaphors used so far especially when they apply specifically to him. Previously I referred to Yo's apparently insulting comment to So about wolves being one of those odd beasts that mate for life when talking about his devotion to Su so I'm trying to remember if we've had much of a discussion about wolves and dogs... but my mind's a blur at the moment so I hope I'm not retreading any old ground. I have some vague memory of @bebebisous33 posting something but my brain is a sieve right now.

 

Canis lupus is the Latin name designated to the subspecies of the gray wolf and of the domestic dog. The wolf has a long history with humans as a predatory figure, which sees it as a figure of fear and derision, danger and destruction. A hunter. On top of that, wolves are generally monogamous. The domestic dog, on the other hand, has come to signify loyalty, devotion and unconditional friendship. "Man's best friend"

These two apparently contradictory strains of thought are brought together in the development of Wang So.

He begins his journey as a hostage in a foreign land tangling with wolves and develops a reputation as being a wolf-killing psychopath. He lives up to the reputation by massacring a temple full of non-speaking monks and sets the place alight. In that instance all his skills as hunter and ruthless predator come to the fore.

Soon the wolf gradually becomes domesticated when he returns home and chooses to stay. He sets aside his bestial instincts, puts away his sword momentarily and takes to book learning.

Despite his willingness to be domesticated, he is never allowed to forget this bestial nature. The scar on his face, insults from his dysfunctional family are constant reminders that he will never truly be one of them. At best he will be a mere dog… a tamed pet or a tool that one uses to undertake thankless tasks… or in the vernacular, do the dirty work.

To some degree he accepts  and lives with his reputation both as a searing wound and as a badge of honour. He is well aware that the chances of his being accepted as a potential mate is slim to known. As he says in defiance to his siblings:

Rather than a woman of high value, I want one who will treasure me. Someone who would not be concerned about this ugly face of mine.

 

On that occasion Yo calls him a “struggling animal”. Then Yeon Hwa says, “How much fun would it be to turn an animal into a human.”

Yo believes that So carries pretensions of being civilized but in Yo's eyes So is no better than an animal who is wrestling with his bestial nature at best. This appeals to Yeon Hwa’s need to control and show her dominance in a world where men dominate. Since she cannot gain dominance over men, she likely believes that she can fashion a man out of an animal in accordance to her will. A notion, thankfully that remains largely within the realm of fantasy.

So, however, against all odds, does find a woman who seems to be unconcerned about the ugly face of his. Moreover, she seems rather largely unfazed by his reputation for being dangerous and oddly unshaken by his darker tendencies. He falls in love with her and becomes her willing dog... a beautiful picture of devotion and loyalty in the face of death and crisis. He is as we say in English "dogged" in his devotion. 

When So asks Su out for a night of star-gazing, he uses the call of a wolf/dog… a howl. Wolves howl to track each other during a weather event or when in unfamiliar territory and to communicate over long distances. Despite herself, Su’s faintly amused, acknowledges the summons and soon makes her way to her “mate”. On this occasion we see too that there’s a sense of self-awareness with So as he is continually grappling with his inner savagery. While the courtship ritual doesn't quite take off, the story he tells Su about jealousy over Jeong as a child shows a clear self-awareness and even fear of his potential dangerous impulses… his hunting tendencies. What moves him here in this exchange is that Su seems to not fear but even offer sympathy regarding the source of such impulses despite knowing about his handiwork. As a result he is convinced that he has found his “mate for life” and he is ready to confess love.

However in that same episode (and episodes subsequent to that) the dog-wolf metaphor re-emerges as a burden and an impediment to freedom.

In an attempt to protect the King's daughter from a fate no different to his as a child, he agrees to marry her. This means he cannot exercise his freedom to keep his promises to his "mate for life". His loyalty to the King binds him yet again.

With a leash on my neck like this, am I again becoming a dog to protect my brother? Is this my fate? Turning my back on what I like is making me sick and tired right now... Tell me, how exactly should I break this leash and escape?

 

So is a man in love but is not free to love and to act on it. He feels the constant tug and pull to be at the beck and call of the throne. For Mu, he does it willingly as a loyal, devoted dog.

However, Ji Mong takes the metaphor further…

Most men in such situations will want to be a dog that bites the owner and takes over the house.

 

This is a scenario that So doesn’t seriously entertain until he is completely backed into a corner by Yo who uses the “thing he likes” as leverage ie. to tighten the leash and force him into fealty and submission. He is now a dog with a tightened leash with the threat of his mate for life hanging over him.

Yo forgets that though So maybe be his running dog under duress, a wolf still lurks within. A wolf that may be defanged momentarily but given time and enough space, they will return.

After being pressed on every side and bullied to be the animal that he wanted to jettison, So once again dons his wolf persona. He becomes the wolf in dog skin for the sake of his own freedom and the freedom of the woman he loves. He assumes a cloak of subservience in order to make his own plans.

There is no better known folktale in the English speaking world about pigs and wolves than the one about the three little pigs who built houses.

It is no coincidence then that Yo calls himself a pig with a lovely sense of irony. Not just any kind of pig but a breeding-pig whose sole purpose is to warm the seat and pass it on to the next suitable contender. This pig, usurper to the throne is nearing the end of his use-by-date… he is slowly losing his grip on reality and even his mother knows that her blemish-free son has serious mental health issues.

It is interesting and maybe no coincidence again that this pig is building a house elsewhere while he is casting a watchful eye over the one he's sitting in, barely keeping it together.

This pig maybe building his house of stones but unbeknownst to him, the dog he sends to build that house has turned on him and will soon become his wolf.

Therefore now the two houses are in jeopardy... one made of straw and the other made of sticks. Both easy targets for the wolf that's been and is coming.

However, this pig knows that the wolf is sniffing at his door. Through his spy, he finds out that not only the house building is going nowhere but that the wolf is coming for the house of sticks that he’s living in presently.

Nevertheless there is no happy ending for the pig in this story. The wolf will come and he will do more than huff and puff and blow the house down. He will rush the house, take over and gobble up the pig that sits on the throne. He will then become the dog that bites the owner and takes over the house.

@zi4r Wow, you are pouring out your frustration over HS 's plain idiotic from episode 14-16. I love your comprehensive explanatory about this drama because you have putting all my thoughts in writing which I couldn't do it.  I can understand you because I have the same thoughts as you. But when I think deeper, or I put myself at HS's position I could do the same things. HS has seen the vision that WE would being killed by WS, she was scare. So, the only way is to ensure WE s safety is to separate both princes meeting with each other. 

But, I think she do trust WS. If not, she wouldn't tell WS the condition of King Taejo while she is looking for CP.  HS did tell WS that its took her quite sometime to fully believe in him. Of course, I also don't happy because she doesn't stand firm to what she supposed to be. 

However, I did not agree with you saying that HS might sense that "she will be sent back to future the next day"..Being transported to Goryeo is already unacceptable fact to her, and for so many years she still lives in Goryeo. I don't think " she has a feeling that her time is running out". She did her best, to be a judge and do not to let anyone of the princes get hurt. No hard feelings, just for discussion.....

Anyway real life got complicated for me so I seldom come here, but I still lurk sometimes. I'm so sad reading the article about LJG who feels responsible about the low ratings for this drama  when the ratings are just based on people who watched it live...   I really wanted to say to LJG :

Somebody said it's better to have a few but dedicated fans than having many fans but not as dedicated. Now LJG-shi, imho, this drama isn't for watching live and moving on with RL or other drama just like that, but for people to watch it, get awed while confused, download the episode again, ponder about it, and finally understand the hidden meaning of what the writer try to convey and the meaning behind the expressions all the actors try to deliver, while wondering about the truth which is the real meaning of that plot and expression in the next episode. The conclusion is, this drama made people think, everyday, while waiting for the next episode. So maybe, just maybe, not everyone can watch it live and there are some people who just need to have the right mood to have a better understanding about this drama. That's why fans of this drama has better chance of rewatching this drama in the future and remembering it in everyday life. IMO, this drama definitly attracts more dedicated fans, who fall in love with the subtle meaning behind every episodes. Proof? HERE! and all the websites who posted the episode about this drama or just talk about this drama. I've never seen so many comments on a drama before. That means people feel the need to talk and analyze about drama so much they may start to write a thesis out of it. LOL What has MLSHR done to you people (and me also)??  /LOL sorry for sprouting nonsense /sorry late reaction /trying to send telepathic message to LJG "Please cheer up!!". LOL

this is my last post about WHY HAESOO behave like that toward WS through all this time and this one is from TongHua POV who i happen to read discussing why many people dislike RX character as female lead... cr to KOALAPLAYGROUND...

with respect to many people disliking Haesoo character as a female lead cause So is the one who love her passionately and without a doubt also she the one who keep waffling and creating reason not to be together.. the trust she have is a little compared to So because she been hurt again and again plus all the KG thing that she know.. we seriously can't blame her not to know about history that much and she just a human to begin with.. people keep forgetting just because she lived in Goryeo for many years deep down she still the modern girl Ha Jin .. and we all know modern girl are practical , realistic and not the type to love also not to lose in a grand gesture (e.g So sacrifices and all).. in a way she is selfish and she want to survive living not dying...

all of her fear are very modern sensibilities which is totally different in that era.. people in Goryeo is all out i mean WW getting darker and evil because of love So keep sacrificing his life out of love.. Yo became so evil is out of his mom doing and YH want to be a queen to revenge , WH became a spy to revenge but HS fear is just her dying and So became KG.. her modern sense can't grab the thing that people do in order to achieve something in that era cause we all can't accept that.. her reluctant till the end to accept So is just because one thing... she afraid letting her heart to be owned by someone who she think in the end will kill her heart...

people ask why Soo still can't accept when So do his king duty although she been living in palace?? because she loves him... So is someone that she loved and he will unintentionally hurt her when he do his duty but still it will hurt her deeper than other people e.g Yo caused the person who hurt her is not So but KG.. she will slowly accept her fate and want to go against it.. RX i believe did't want her last breath in palace cause that place causing her hurting so much... Soo also will escape the place that make her suffer and want to die peacefully....

in the end Soo will loved So as much as So ever loved her.. Soo will loved So with her entire heart and soul and she already give him the most precious thing as a women can gives.... but you have to remember Soo also can't stop caring and loving other people too such as WJ , WW , BA , WH and CR.. no matter what this people did to her she love and care for them until the end.. like WJ said when she hid him that she will do the same if other people in that room because its just who Soo is..

Soo just loved too much for her heart to handle... and in the end it will break her...

people are so quick to jump on hate bandwagon that people forgot that unlike So who does't have anybody except Soo that he willing to give up his life for her she have a lot of love from other people that her only fear is dying.. Soo might be the realistic female lead that make us hate her but what she do is to survive and that what we all going to do if we on her shoes... 

even Tong Hua know that RX will be a very controversies character to begin with cause she not the one who put love first.. she put her life at first.... and people don't get it because we all being served with love before anything else in drama... 

when i watch BBJX i keep defending RX too and in here i'm defending Soo too.. lol

at the end everybody entitled to each own opinion and i really hope we will see a happy ending in 20th century cause Goryeo is not the place where SoHae will have their happy ending... 

they BOTH deserve a happy ending after what they been through....

These couple of days, I mostly lurked around to read your awesome posts of pictures, BTS, discussions of last episode. Honestly, I'm a bit unprepared to face the end of this drama. It's been one strange, exciting, exhausting, but addictive journey of drama watching. I've been told many times that Scarlet Heart is flawed and all, It's almost like a mantra for I keep reading it everywhere. My mind's been telling me from the episode 1, "are you sure you wanna keep watching?" but my heart answers differently. This emotional attachment is kinda derailing me from the real life. Crazy, but true. After episode 14, I even forced my self to watch another fluffy and light drama, to stop me from thinking about Scarlet Heart all the time. Again, crazy but true.

But I wanna be here, until the end of the line. This drama is the one to beat, for I'm not sure how long.

I can relate the lyrics to SoSoo couple. More to WangSo after HaeSoo's death and he knowing she is from the future, a future where his soul can possibly be together again with her and be finally happy.

I wonder why there is less spoiler this weekend ya, usually compare to previous weekends, we should have several spoilers already, and on Monday morning at least 1 new clip of upcoming episode. Is it because Moonlight ended already so there's no need for aggressive promotion for rating battle? 

Come to think of it, the thread gets quiet because we are in the final stage of Grief: ACCEPTANCE. 
We have said what we have to say about almost anything. We know what lies ahead, we brace ourselves for the heartbreak and start to think of something that can 'cure' us and help us move on. I know I need to.

@violet90 i agree with you. If we are in her position, we might do the same things Iike. Just bear in mind that HS comes from 21st century, her thinking can not deviate too much from what she is, even though she lives and stays in Goryeo. I should say the writer nim has successfully created wrath feeling to viewers. Hehehe.....

I admire these great analyzes and I enjoy reading them and thinking through them. Thank you very much. Still, I see some controversies in my thoughts. When Wang So Yeon Hwa marries and the story of Taejo and Lady Oh repeats, Yeon Hwa will probably direct the lack of love against her child. Just as Queen Yoo did it against Wang So too. Why is Hae Soo Wang So not that she is out of the future? At least Ji Mong would have to foresee the disaster in parts (He also saw the short life of Prince Moo). Why is it calculated Wang Jung who brings Hae Soo out of the palace. It could also be Wang Sos confidant Baek Ah. Because he trusted him (Woo He's betrayal now times except.)

I think we all felt upset when knowing that LGK ' s oppa upset and disappointment over the low ratings...that's way this thread is slowing down ....Please brace ourselves, don't be affected by the ratings, This is good drama I ever seen. Let's us enjoy the coming final four episode. And I pray that the writer nim will give mercy to HS, don't waver her trust to WS again, no play games about trust....
