A number of film distributors are postponing the openings of their films, after the government reinstated bolstered social-distancing rules to curb a surge in coronavirus infections. The country saw the number of infections reach a record 7,850 cases, Wednesday.

The premiers of local films "Kingmaker," starring Lee Sun-kyun and Seol Kyung-gu, and "Emergency Declaration," starring Song Kang-ho and Lee Byung-hun, have been pushed back after being scheduled to take place in the coming weeks.

Showbox, the distributor of the star-studded blockbuster "Emergency Declaration," has also indefinitely postponed its January premiere.

"We have worked very hard to present the film to open up a new year," it said in a statement, Wednesday. "We too are saddened to delay the release, as we have looked forward to the day, but we came to the decision after careful consideration… we will be there when it's safer for viewers to come out to the theaters."

The government announced Thursday tighter social distancing measures, as the country has been suffering another serious wave of virus infections.

From Saturday until Jan. 2, the curbs will restrict gatherings to no more than four people ― only those who are fully vaccinated. Restaurants, cafes, and bars must close by 9 p.m., and entertainment facilities such as movie theatres and internet cafes will be forced to close by 10 p.m.

Korea’s Hit Political Dramas

True Life Political Tales and Fictionalized Election Stories Draw Big Crowds

Elections are serious business in any country, but in Korea, politics have also proven to be good business for the film sector. Stories about political events, many of them true-life accounts of major events in modern Korean history, have consistently to be significant draws at the box office over the years.

These stories cover the breadth of South Korea’s relatively short history and feature characters strutting through the halls of power but also the citizens whose lives are most affected by their era’s political currents.

Below is a list of the all-time most popular political dramas at the Korean box office, followed by a brief primer on other Korean election dramas ahead of the political contest 2022.

Inside Men - 9.13 million viewers

In one of his most iconic roles, Lee Byunghun plays Ahn Sanggoo, a gangster who becomes a shady political fixer who is betrayed by an influential newspaper editor (Baek Yoonsik) and the national assemblyman (Lee Gyoungyoung) he’s trying to position as Korea’s next president. Sanggoo returns from the shadows and begins to hatch a plan to get back at his former ally while the editor is busy maneuvering behind the scenes as Korea’s next presidential election cycle heats up. But to do so, he needs to team up with a straight arrow district attorney played by Cho Seungwoo, who is also hellbent on taking down the corrupt editor and assemblyman. The third film by Woo Minho, Inside Men became a huge hit in late 2015, prompting the release of a significantly expanded three-hour extended cut that was also a critical and commercial hit.

The Man Standing Next - 4.75 million viewers

Director Woo Minho and star Lee Byunghun teamed up again last year for the political drama The Man Standing Next, which chronicles the days leading up to the assassination of president Park Junghee in 1979, an event that was previously dramatized in director Im Sangsoo’s modern classic The President’s Last Bang (2005). Lee plays Kim Gyupyeong, the head of the KCIA, which operated directly under President Park’s control. The film chronicles Kim’s gradual disillusionment with the head of state as President Park begins to favor his security chief’s hawkish counsel. Woo’s film was selected as South Korea’s entry to the Best International Feature Film category at the 93rd Academy Awards.

In particular, in the movie 'Gwanghae, the Man Who Became King', which drew 12.32 million viewers in 2012, he played the role of Gwanghae and the main character, Ha Seon, who pretended to be Gwanghae, and received favorable reviews. In the same year, for the first time as an Asian actor, more than 200 Hollywood actors, including Charlie Chaplin, left handprints in front of the Chinese Theater, a famous place where hand prints were left, along with senior actor Ahn Sung Ki.

Lee Byung Hun is scheduled to meet the audience through the films 'Emergency Declaration' and 'The Match', which have been postponed to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Movies with famous directors and popular actors such as Park Chan Wook’s Decision to Leave, which is expected to be seen at the Cannes Film Festival, and Hirokazu Koreeda’s Broker are set to premiere this year. Without further ado, allow me to introduce ten upcoming films carefully handpicked by ZAPZEE.

8. Concrete Utopia

2022 korean movie

Concrete Utopia is centered around the survivors of a massive earthquake that destroyed Seoul as they gather at the sole surviving building, Hwanggoong Apartment.

Concrete Utopia is a film adaptation of Kim Sung Nik’s webtoon which depicts how human nature changes when people are faced with a catastrophe. Lee Byung Hun plays the temporary apartment resident representative while Park Seo Joon and Park Bo Young star as a survivor couple. Uniquely, the movie has been expanding its cinematic universe even before its premiere. It is currently in mid-production of the drama Concrete Market, which is set in the same cinematic universe, and it has been reported that Don Lee has been cast to star in a film set years after the events of after Concrete Utopia.
