Why did Lee Byung Hun choose "Our Blues”? (A  translation) 

 

 

“There was no reason not to.”

 

Actor Cha Seung-won answered the question about the reason for appearing in the tvN weekend drama 'Our Blues', which is a new work by writer Noh Hee Kyung. And then he added. "I didn't believe it at first, saying, 'Isn't it Lee Byung-soo and not Lee Byung-hun?’  It is a belief in Lee Byung Hu's choice.

 

Lee Byung-hun is not an actor who frequently appears in dramas. However, in the 2000s, the works he chose never failed. Starting with ‘All In’ in 2003, ‘Iris’ and ‘Mr  Sunshine. The drama he appears in four years after 'Mr. Sunshine' is 'Our Blues'. Cha Seung-won's one word can be said to show respect for his acting skills as well as the perspective of Lee Byung Hun, an actor of the same age.

 

The story of Dong Suk, played by Lee Byung Hun in the omnibus drama, has not yet started properly. However, he has already shown the so-called 'crazy presence' (this expression became common after being used as a tribute to Kim Seung Woo in the 2009 drama 'Iris' starring Lee Byung Hun). Dong-Suk , who lives as a vendor selling miscellaneous goods in trucks, was born and raised in Pureung Village. The sight of him enjoying entertainment while dancing naturally in the reunion of his seniors is considered a famous scene in ‘Our Blues’.

 

 

The public has already seen a similar figure to Lee Byung Hun in the movie “It’s Only My World” / “Keys to the Heart." The scene where he, who had been living in the house of his new mother, whom he reunited after a long time, suddenly performed a breakdance skillfully while sitting at the table chatting with each other, is not easily forgotten in the minds of those who have seen “It’s Only My World” .  It’s nice to be able to see Lee Byung Hun’s appearance with a lot of strength removed from his shoulders again in 'Our Blues’.

 

In this drama, Lee Byung Hun plays Dong Suk. His mother has a house on Jeju Island, but he does not go there and lives on a truck. He even sleeps in the truck. He brings fresh food and miscellaneous goods, such as fish and shellfish, to the elderly in scattered island villages near Jeju. It's not about making money, it's about love. So he got get angry when they have bought things from other vendors. He then said, "I can't sell it after today," and throws all the fish out of the car. It's not that I’ am angry because I can't sell things. I get angry at the 'betrayal' of people I thought of as my mother and sister.” “ Dong Suk is such a person.

 

Dong Suk’s opposite character is Sun Ah,  played by Shin Min Ah.   The meeting between the two was briefly introduced in the prologue of the second episode. It was seven years ago. Dong Suk kissed Sun Ah thinking she had a heart for him, but Sun Ah hurts him by saying, "Me? Oppa?" Eventually, Sun Ah returns sitting in the back of the car driven by Dong Suk.

 

The relationship between the two has yet to be clarified. However, if you look at the website of "Our Blues," there is an introduction about Dong Suk, "If only my first love (Sun Ah) had not trampled on my innocence twice at 17 and 32”.   Dong Suk has loved his first love, Sun Ah for a long time.  However, in the fourth prologue, Sun Ah appeared to be suffering from depression while raising a child. The story of Dong Suk and Sun Ah, which follows the stories of Han Soo (Cha Seung Won) and Eun Hee (Lee Jung Eun), is also expected to be convoluted.

Regarding the drama, Lee Byung Hun said at the production presentation, “I appear as the main character in some episodes and in other episodes, I appeared briefly like an extra and that was fun. It felt like the layers of the drama were piling up. I felt like only the camera was moving among the people who really lived there," he said.

 

This omnibus-style composition can be said to have been crafted from the beginning when writer Noh Hee Kyung wrote 'Our Blues'. Writer Noh said, referring to Jeju's gyeomdang culture (the concept that everyone is a relative) and said, "It was like seeing the hot sentiments of Korea where the culture of Jeju people, who they regard as us and not others, is disappearing." A relationship in which everyone is connected is in line with the meaning of everyone being the protagonist of their own life. It means that each person who lives his own life in this drama is the lead.

 

Lee Byung Hun is Korea’s top tier actor. When he says he will appear, major investment distributors welcome him with open arms. To this, he responds with impeccable acting skills and box office success.

 

But at the same time, he does not  insist on being the principal actor.  “I don't mind making a cameo appearance. In the movie “The Age of Shadows" released in 2016, he made a surprise appearance as Jeong Chae San  who is hiding under a veil. This scene in which Lee Byung Hun, who is called 'acting 9', and Song Kang Ho, the main character of “The Age of Shadows”, face each other, is the highlight of this movie.  The reunion of the two actors who played the bad guy (Lee Byung Hun) and the strange guy (Song Kang Ho) in the movie 'The Good, the Bad, the Weird' was even more interesting.

 

 

In 2017, it appeared in the music video for singer Psy's 'I Love It'. The public was enthusiastic about his breakdance with a very serious expression. Afterwards, Psy appeared on a radio program and said, "Lee Byung Hun himself said, 'I used to break dance when I was young.' His unique bending motion caught my eye.
