have you read the book? Are the intimate scenes between Hansu and Sanju moderately written or more open?

@1ouise do you remember? :sweat_smile:

A scene between the two is expected--otherwise we wouldn't have a story.  If they portray what is written, it would be explicit.  I hope what they show will be moderate.

If Sunja is the center character of the novel, why there's not many even none mentioned about Sunja ?

This is my main question.  They would have had to make big changes for Hansu to be the main character.

Someone was saying that young Sunja was only 14, 16 when she met Koh Hansu?   With only 8 episodes, there will probably be a (short) bed scene between the two - well, that's how we get Noa, right.

Whoa ... so excited to know how they going to adapt the stories, focusing the lead on Hansu , meaning Lee Min Ho.    It's not going to cover all the 3 books then.

Sunja is 16, nearly 17, when she meets Hansu.  You are right, of course there is a love scene.    What I hope not to see are the gratuitous and unnecessary scenes that come later in the book involving other characters.

It will be covering the third part of the novel because the characters announced so far include Solomon, Naomi (not in the book), adult Mosazu, and Etsuko, who appear in part 3.  In fact, from the announcement, so far they haven't listed characters from parts 1 and 2.

If these 8 episodes on Hansu, would there be next, next on Noa (played by LMH again) .. hehe (one can dream, right?)

The two characters have a relationship with each other.  For me it would be weird for the young Hansu from the beginning of the story (LMH) to suddenly be changed to an older actor and be talking to the older Noa (LMH) who changed from a child actor.

And he's now 33, perhaps by choosing this project and playing an unconventional character, he wants to slowly move on from his flower boy image as he has more and more mature fans from all over the world now. :D

I agree.  This is chapter 2 in his career.  He wants to do something different.  I love that and have been waiting for it.  In my opinion, he should portray mature content that is not voyeuristic in nature.  I think that would be the authentic LMH.

Can this drama be kind of spin off?? I mean rather than old story writer will make a new story about hansu.only about his life???

I am sorry I don't know how I should explain

I think I understand what you are trying to explain.  From what they have released, it doesn't sound like they are following the book too closely.  Will it be something different??

It's good to read everyone's thoughts.  May I suggest that we have our Pachinko discussions over on the Pachinko thread?  :)

You are not alone.
I read C-Minoz's opinion, if we will not hear any further casting for adult Sunja and Noa, it's possible there will be season 2. And because Noa and Han Soo look very much alike, LMH may play Noa in S2.  :P

Let's all dream about it and push it be true.

Lee Min Ho Confirmed For Cast Of Global Drama “Pachinko” Spanning Across Korea, Japan, And The United States

Lee Min Ho has officially joined the cast of Apple TV+’s “Pachinko”!

The drama is based on Min Jin Lee’s best-selling novel of the same name, which follows four generations of a Korean immigrant family, telling their saga that unfolds across Korea, Japan, and the United States. The show is a global project that will feature Korean, Japanese, and English, and the story will be told over eight episodes. Filming starts on-location in Korea on October 26, and they’re also planning to film in Canada.

Lee Min Ho will be playing the character Hansu, who’s a rich and powerful merchant with ties to organized crime. He’s an opportunist who’s true to his own desires, but he also hides a secret side of himself that’s pure when it comes to love. This mysterious character will embark on a forbidden romance, and he plays an important role in the story.

According to Variety, Lee Min Ho joins a cast that also includes Jin Ha, Anna Sawai, Kim Min Ha, Soji Arai, and Kaho Minami. The drama’s showrunner, executive producer, and main writer is Soo Hugh, and Kogonada and Justin Chon will each be directing four episodes.

If I may offer my thoughts on why adult Sunja (who’s the main protagonist in the book) is not being talked about: she could be a narrator with story being recalled from her perspective. Maybe it’s one huge flashback being retold by an older Sunja (or her descendant).  After all, the book was acclaimed for being female-centric so I doubt that they will spin it to be all about MH’s character.

That being said, I hope that MH’s role be strongly dramatic that will set a whole new reputation for him as an actor. His flower boy brand (that’s been over exploited in his millions of CFs) has overshadowed his acting in the eyes of many people, so I’m excited that he’s taking steps to solidify himself as a serious actor.

I also don’t mind seeing him do 18+ scenes, being a pervy ahjumma myself. After all, our boy is over 30—let him mature too, k :yum:

Lee Min Ho will be returning with a new acting project—the global video streaming service (OTT) Apple TV+ drama Pachinko (literal translation).

Apple TV+ in the U.S. officially announced the production of the drama Pachinko and named the actor as the lead of its cast, which will be composed of Korean, Japanese, and American actors.

The drama is based on a best-selling novel of the same name written by Korean-American author Lee Min Jin. Set to be distributed globally through Apple TV+, it will be conducted in three languages: Korean, Japanese and English.

Pachinko will feature a total of eight episodes of individual stories penetrated by history on a vast scale and in depth through four generations of Korean immigrant family epic stories. Filming for this global masterpiece will begin on October 26.

Lee Min Ho, who is the drama’s first revealed cast member, plays Han Soo. The character is a merchant who has built up wealth and power with ties to the yakuza. He plays an important role in the context of the story as an opportunist who is faithful to his desires and a mysterious person who pursues a forbidden love with a secret kept from the person he loves.

Portraying a chronicle of war, peace, love and separation as well as victory and ties between Korea, Japan and the U.S, Pachinko will be produced by the production company Media Reds.

The Terror and The Killing television writer Soo Hugh will participate in the series as its main writer, general production and showrunner.  Korean-American director Kogonada (Columbus, After Yang) and director Justin Chon are also confirmed to participate in the production.
