I seemed to have misunderstood that Ep 11 would be fun? not after all this torture, blood, tragedy...

Poor HS, not only because of the torture, but but because of Lady Oh's execution....after Lady Hae whom HS also dearly loved. now Lady Oh...that is just too much.

I thought HS will be depicted as a spirited, strong, optimistic bubbly character.  Now they have broken her spirit. Always that sadness, i am going to miss her smiles.

Be careful with what you wish for indeed...she wanted to escape heartbreak and debts in her 21st Century life.... only to be transported in this barbaric era.

Just a note for those who watch the episodes with the DSS subs.  We finished the QC of Ep 9 only just now.  By mistake, it was marked as 100% done when it was only 25% QC'ed, a couple of days ago.  If you watched with the subs too early, you might want to watch again with the latest subs, as a some bugs were fixed and the logical flow cleared up on some of the stretches.

Glad to know that there are those of you who appreciate the subs there. DSS subs have only very few paraphrased lines, as we just stick to what is said. They include the details that are typically found only in the C-subs (but the common issues with the C-subs are fixed with some direct K-translation as well)....  If there is interest and we do not run out of time due to work pressures etc, we will keep it going.   Subs of Eps 6 through 9 are fully done.

So what is love?

Why are we arguing about who is in love with whom and why is that something important to be sure about? In the context of this drama at least.

There seems to be an underlying assumption in the discussions around the interweb that romance often takes very specific forms and yet we don't seem to agree about what it is. I get the impression that a lot of the disagreements that we have about whether Su is in love with this guy or that guy comes from the fact that we have a particular perspective about what romantic love should look like. This causes us to argue at cross-purposes. Our views of romance and love seem to be coloured by age, culture, the kind of books we read, the type of shows we watch and the life experiences we've had. Often I sense that we're not working from the same kind of definition.

To me love and romance occupy two separate categories. My worldview states that love is something deeper and more robust manifesting itself in different forms while romance has something to do with the act of coupling, courtship and its consummation. Romance can and often lead to love.

Since joining this thread and reading DB comments, I've been struck by the number of comments that say that Su seems so in love with Uk that there's no way she could fall for So or that it is hard to conceive of her doing so. For my part I have never thought that. I will not disagree that on the surface, they look like they're in love. Their relationship carries all the classic signs of young love... secret hugs behind closed doors, secret looks, smiles. But to me that relationship or "love" isn't really allowed to deepen because of lack of opportunity to interact more freely and the fact that the male character lacks resolve. The promises don't translate into anything really concrete and they're both content to play some kind of waiting game with some vague sense that they'll be married eventually. Secondly, they don't ever deal with the actual problems in their relationship or even acknowledge that there are problems. From my perspective the relationship is riddled with problems primarily because it's all about playing safe first and foremost. I'm not saying that there are no good reasons for playing it safe but there comes a time when one needs to cross the rubicon especially when we consider that she's a palace maid and he's a prince. Undoubtedly the skinship looks impressive but my argument is that that' where it largely remains. Once the bubble and froth disappears, there isn't much to that relationship that one can really sink one's teeth into.

This is why I think of that dynamic in terms of infatuation rather than love. I don't consider what's between them love and therefore for me, I don't find that pairing any real kind of threat to the OTP. From my perspective, Uk (yeah, sorry mate) is a merely stepping stone into a much more gritty, overwhelming, demanding and yet truly vulnerable relationship. As a momentary distraction, Uk is as good as it gets without having to get one's hand very dirty.

My worldview informs me that love requires a very high level of commitment and a willingness to take some risk. Something I don't see in the way Uk defines their relationship. Clearly he's committed to marrying Su in some indefinite, nebulous way but he seems loath to exert himself too much to get there. Maybe he thinks he's trying to protect her and his family. Maybe he's playing the long game. But whatever it is, he doesn't feel the urgency of ensuring that Su is well and truly his. He seems reasonably satisfied with the status quo being comfortable that she's "his" as a private arrangement. He has good ideas but he makes little effort with them. To his detriment, I might add. Because of that he has already had something precious snatched from under his nose.

It's like Uk knows he is on to a good thing but it's not so good that he has to move heaven and earth for it. Or to make himself vulnerable for it. Because if you're a prince who's in love with a palace maid, you will have to move heaven and earth to get her but the system is almost entirely against you.

This is why I say the writer is brilliant on some level especially with regards to the so-called love triangle.

So also knows a good thing when he sees it. But the difference is that good things for him don't come often and so when it does, he doesn't believe in holding back. Safety and peace don't really factor in his vocabulary. He too is as much a prisoner of the system as anyone else (or more so) but with a little help from his friends, he's clawing his way out of it or at least learning how to use it to his advantage. When he realises he's in love, he is somewhat guarded but hopeful. However, the incident where he is asked to be unmasked, disillusions him. Not because he had to expose himself to his brothers but because of Su's involvement in the unmasking as well as her response to it. He wants to be loved by her, not pitied so he gives her silent treatment in no uncertain terms. She spends a lot of Ep. 8 trying her hardest to back into his good books, seeks him out and develops Goryeo's answer to BB cream. Her authenticity seems to move him and he tells her that she has to now take responsibility for doing this much for him. That their relationship has gone to a whole new level and she cannot deny it. She has, as it were, crossed the line. It's clear from the way she looks at him (as ably demonstrated by our friend @bebebisous33) after applying the concealer that she knows it too. Something has happened between them that has transformed their bond. He was vulnerable in front of her and she took responsibility for his scar. A woman who was willing to do that, crossing social norms and issues of gender propriety was someone worth wooing and loving. She would now come under his protection.

He leans in for physical intimacy and while her heart and mind are already directed towards the fulfilment of his welfare/needs, her body has not yet given over itself to what the heart and mind already know.

On the surface the relationship looks messy, and I would add that it has taken on new levels of messiness after Ep. 9. Their connection begins under some not-so-promising circumstances, they seemed to be world's apart. One's a violent prince with mummy issues, the other a 21st century woman hiding inside the body of a 16 year old girl with links to the nobility. On the surface they seem to have nothing in common but somehow they connect and a friendship based on truth-speaking develops.

So why am I confident that they are the OTP? The reason being that despite this being a remake from a C- novel, it is still a K drama and we all know that K dramas love to make the protagonists suffer -- as individuals and as a couple. According to this trope, it is only through suffering that they can prove their mettle and their love. But also their worthiness to enjoy that kind of once-in-a-lifetime love.

Su and So have suffered. Su was grieving over relationship betrayal and its aftermath. She scars herself in Damiwon, finds the work as a palace maid hard, finds herself the target of workplace bullying. So... well, where do we start? The boy, scarred by his mother physically and mentally who nobody wanted.

According to K drama logic... the couple that suffers together, stays together.

That said, I'm no where near confident that their ending will be a happily-ever-after one. In part it's due to the source material but the political backdrop and what we know of history doesn't hold out much for that happening. But I'm fine (well, mentally prepared at least) with it as long as the OTP get their moments and that they've been given a fighting chance to explore their relationship to the fullest extent.

After this, I'm brain dead.

I'm quite heartbroken that lady oh will be gone soon, it seems like only recently she and haesoo came to a mutual understanding and respect for one another. I was looking forward to see that relationship progress more, but such is a preproduced show with only 20 episodes....

Although, I guess it works well to finally hammer home the point to haesoo how terrible palace life can be, because at this point I feel she's just been skating by with help from the princes and lady oh. basically, she has lucked out with surviving so far. I hope that this will cause her to be more resourceful and fully kicks her survival instinct into gear.... or to put it simply, grow up lol.  

On to happier musings, my heart leapt when I saw the still of the rain scene. I'm so glad SHR kept this very iconic scene!!! I wonder if they'll show the boat scene at some point...

I remember a quote which says; You want to finish the story but you don't want the story to finish. I'm so in love with this Drama and our ScarCouple's story. I want to watch them forever. I need that DVD release with no cuts and complete BTS!! oh! oh! and english subs please...

@LyraYoo That was what I wondered too when doing the translation, since it says that Lady Oh was executed 處死. Perhaps she begged for Lady Oh's life, or begged to be allowed to see her one last time before her death? Either way, one by one, she is slowly losing those who truly love her... heralding the start of a bleak, dark chapter in her life. I may be wrong but I think safe to say that we will no longer see Soo smile or laugh without a care in the world from here on... and perhaps finally, she will mature into the woman who is no longer reckless, but circumspect in every way to protect both herself and those she loves... befitting the title of this drama - 步步惊心.

Just a random thought... there is such a contrast in both the guys in her life in how they treat her. Wang Wook treats her like so gently, and he speaks in almost whispers and he's like that soothing kind of guy while Wang So is so rough and passionate every step of the way. But its too obvious for me that Wang So loves Soo so so so so much more.  fingers crossed for a happy ending!

@fathiayunia aku nonton kok drama sebelah. Tapi ga ngikutin threadnya. Bagus kok tapi memang lebih ringan dan cute kalo dibanding MLSH. Karena K** udah ga ada di One, abis nonton ML biasanya aku mantengin net buat nonton itu drama. Kalau menurut aku sih, ga kemudaan juga soalnya adegannya ringan2 aja kayak early 20 something drama. Tapi emang mukanya PBG sih keterlaluan cute-nya! Sama waktu awal aku mikir, "Masa iya kagak ada yang nyadar di cewek? Pan enggak ada manly2 nya. Oh dulu yang kayak begini bukan barang langka kali ya?" gitu. Sama kayak waktu pertama nonton drama pertamanya Yoochun Sungkyungwan. Tapi kesini2 sih ga terlalu mikirin, lah otak aku udah abis buat MLSH hahaha.. 

 

I'm waiting for the horse ride scene because it will be next to the force-kissing scene. Just what will WS do to make HS want to be back hug on the same horse with him? She already experienced that once, she must have known how intimate it can be and not a few moments a go she was throwing not so nice words to him and didn't want to be back hug or kiss. 

And another reason for watching that scene are the way he touch her knees and lay his head slightly in her shoulder also his face when they run into Wook and Jung. That is a smug face y'all! Like, heh yes bada**es I got the prettiest girl in Goryeo in my arm. Be jealous, be very jealous!

Oh my poor Wook.. He is indeed boiling hot in jealousy. Why don't you make some move, Wook! Do something, anything. Everybody kept saying you only say false hope and empty promises and I must say I agree with them right now. That's why I say shreds you sheep clothes and let's become A Real Bad*ss Wolf! 빨리 빨리!

I think HS become sanggong (cmiiw) when CP become King not when WS reign. There's a pic in Insta where they standing side by side and HS wearing the same dress while WS still has his hair in ponytail and not so formal. But Idk tbh. Anything goes in this drama.

I'm actually super busy right now doing some college project and haven't checked your previous post but I'm really interested with your concept of Handgang and the oath of allegiance between HS-WS that I can't concentrate. So I decided to ignore my college project for a moment.

So, does it mean that Wang So will acknowledge Hae Soo not as wife or as queen that stands below him but as equal that stands beside him as a king? So, no matter what because at that time for a royalty nobody married for love but for political reasons (love just happen along the way) he refuse to let Hae Soo become a pawn with all it's political conspiration and complication that for sure gonna kill her? And that will explain the lack of her name in history. If it's true isn't that so sweet?

It made me think that Wang So always say that Hae Soo is his and Hae Soo is his person but in reality he treats her like an equal and respect her every decision, know her struggle, giving her advice, etc. and the same goes for Hae Soo to Wang So. He opened up to her and she opened up to him. He gives himself to her and he wants her to give herself to him. He wants to have an equal relationship. That is why he will not marry her, because he treats her as his equal, not below him. He just didn't have the right choice of word and say "You're mine' instead and giving her a whole new perception, because she comes from different era.

It's in contrast to Wang Wook that say he loves Hae Soo and always try to be gentle to her but say she is his behind her back (Wang So expresses that clearly to her), Wang Wook hasn't opened up to Hae Soo and is hiding a lot of things, and I never see him giving Hae Soo advice too. And while he clearly love Hae Soo, he still see her as below him and thus wants to marry her to stake his claim because he feels Hae Soo is slowly slipping away from his grasp. He didn't think the consequences of all the conspiration and complications that Hae Soo has to face after marrying him. So while Wang Wook clearly love her he still treat her as below him.

 

Is my take on your concept right? Or am I beautifying it too much because of my undying love for Wang So? 

First of all, thanks for the compliments!! I am glad that my comments are appreciated.

Yes, that's right. There are many clues pointing in that direction!! First, he could have married her much earlier, but he didn't. What was his reason? Hae Soo belonged to the Hae clan, like his wife's, so technically she wasn't such a bad choice. However, her position in that family was much lower than her cousin's. Yet her uncles were able to use her as a pawn and attempted to have her married to the king which proves to me that Hae Soo did have some value. We shouldn't forget that she was a lady after all and not a servant or maid.

While Wang Wook refused to get married again (political marriage), he never told his mother nor sister his reason, although he could have. We know that he wanted to marry Hae Soo. Why the hesitation? Some might say because of his family as he knew that they wouldn't approve this marriage. However, I consider this as a false excuse. He is the head of the household, for god's sake... look how his father is treating his wives. He doesn't allow them to influence or blackmail him. Hence from my point of view, the real reason is that Wang Wook couldn't do it because of his greed.

 Deep down, he knew that if he got married to Hae Soo, he would have to give up his goal: becoming the king. And that's the real reason behind.

Like I described it before, Wang Wook is a prince whose strategy to become the king is to wait and to get support from the clans little by little as he knows, time is working for him. He has realised that Mu and Yo are lacking so that he has come to the conclusion that they wouldn't last long as king. Mu is not powerful enough and Yo is only his mother's puppet. Moreover, this explains his passive attitude. His method is to keep low profile and stay neutral. Then in this drama, we see how he is working in order to have as much support as possible:

- distribuing supplies to people is one mean to get the support from people;

- people keep visiting him and request help from him (he told his wife that he was happy that Hae Soo was the only one who tried not to ask for his help, implying that he often had visits from clans or higher ups who would make requests to him. He is creating a net of relationships by making their requests come true. To me, it is also similar to the feudal system: I help you but as such, you need to support me (financial and military support).

However, he is not doing it with Hae Soo. He keeps saying that he will help her ("leave the palace", "wait for him"), but he really fails each time as he hasn't still given up his dream of becoming the king. So the oath of allegiance is not working here. Striking is that lady Oh witnessed the closeness between Wang Wook and Hae Soo, but she never warned her about him or gave her the advice to be sure that she gave her whole heart to him, if not to avoid him. Why did she mention it with Wang So and not with Wang Wook? In my opinion, lady Oh is well aware that their relationship will never be official, that Wang Wook will have a little romance with her, however he will never claim her as his in front of others. Since he is not claiming her as his, she is not under his protection. By declaring her as his, Wang So has made a statement: "If she is in danger, I'll protect her. So don't mess with her!" And that's how the feudal system was working. People knew that if they attack a certain vassal, their lord would come to rescue him by sending troups.

Then some people write that Wang Wook can't act like Wang So because the latter has no family. From my point of view, they are forgetting that Wang So has a family: Queen Yoo and his brothers. Even if he has been excluded by his mother, he is still officially part of the family!! Then he is the adopted son of the Kang from Shinju. The bottom of the line is that Wang So is not officially alone. Moreover, the General Park and CJM are close to him so that we can't say that Wang So has no connection and no family at all. At the beginning of the drama, Wang So even tried to help his mother, well aware that he might die or lose his position!! So his mindset is totally different from Wang Wook's. Since he is not after the throne, he is more free than Wang Wook. In reality, Wang Wook's problem is his greed that forces him to be cautious!! 

Another aspect is due to the behaviour of these two princes I can't help myself thinking of Sartre's philosophy: existentialism and his expression bad faith ("mauvaise foi"). Existantialism is connected to freedom. For him, human is condemned to be free. His theory is: Human being is nothing else than his life. So only his acts in life matter. He is condemned because he has no other option or escape. He didn't create the world and himself. Then he is free because once he lives in the world, he is responsible for his actions. Even if someone is tortured, for Sartre, he is still free as he has the possibility to remain silence. So Sartre's freedom is absolute. A human who denies this reality is a coward, he is in "bad faith". 

"Bad faith" means that Human being lies to others, but he also lies to himself as well so that he is hiding the truth. He creates another reality that doesn't correspond to his life. As consequence, he doesn't fulfil his responsabilities. To me, Wang Wook is here the perfect example of that "bad faith". He sees himself as tied to his family, but in reality it is his own greed that stops him from marrying Hae Soo or declaring that she is his person.

Interesting is that Wang So is on the other hand emboding Sartre's philosophy: Wang So acts as if he was free and he takes responsabilities no matter what! Furthermore, since Wang So suffered so much in his childhood, he was not free from the start: his ties were his scar, the rejection of his family, the lack of support, the isolation in the Kang's clan aso. Yet, Wang So was able to free himself from these ties: pure strong-will and his meeting with Hae Soo. Isn't it funny that Wang So who had less freedom in the beginning is now more free than Wang Wook? I guess, the difference between them is the greed and ambition. So far, Wang So is only trying to survive, while Wang Wook is already aiming at the throne, but in a subtitle way.

I hope, this was not too difficult to understand or I expressed myself not too badly or it was not too boring!!

If this drama keeps being so good, then they decide to make a DVD with many scenes that were not used, I'll definitely buy the DVD!!

One aspect I love about this drama is that there is so much sensuality between Wang So-Hae Soo. The director showed it in their first meeting, then in the second ride (the way he hold her), then the make-up scene (he caresses her arm at the end) asm... You can see the physical attraction between them, something unusual for a k-drama!

Thanks everyone for all the updates and spoilers.  Out of all of the new images that came out, for some reason, this one (which seems to be HS wearing the same outfit as Lady Oh?) makes me feel the saddest....  yes, even after all those torture scene images (because at least we know WS will be on her side.)

Even though I know there is a possibility of HS and WS not having a happy ending, the idea that WS gets married to YH and HS possibly remaining a court lady during that time seems so lonely.  I know that WS will always love HS, but if this happens in the future, she will be more alone because also most of the princes will probably be married or not around the palace anymore.

One reoccurring thing among HS is that she is very adamant of "not being owned".  I do like the fact that she is has this type of thinking.  For example, in episode 6, I was all swoony over the princes help escape marriage.  However, in the end, I was happier that she saved herself.  I loved that line in episode 7 when she told WS "No one can save me but myself".  At this point in the story, WW and WS are both eagerly trying to make HS theirs, but her thinking will definitely give both a run for their money because as she said to Lady Oh before she'll have the power to choose (and not them).  Possible spoiler for BBJX:  Even when the 4th was emperor, he still couldn't keep Ruoxi in the palace because she had a way out through the 14th prince.  He ultimately decided to let her go like she wanted.

However, that being said... I am  also conflicted with this side of HS's character because it will definitely lead to tears and loneliness if she ultimately makes the decision she cannot be with WS (for whatever reason - i.e. he marries someone else).   I can definitely see her using her scar excuse again if WS becomes king and orders her to marry him. Poor WS has already suffered so much in his life, and for him never to be with the woman he loves just really makes my heart ache.

He did love Marianne but not as much as he needed to be in the his aunt's good books to inherit her estate. I expect that there's something like that going on there.

For wanting to marry to protect his family's security and increase their standing, I don't blame him. He is a man of his time and that's what people did in his day. But his not being forthcoming with HS... and she naively going along with it... that's the part I'm less amenable to.
