I am a kdrama addict for 4 years now. My depression and withdrawals usually only happens with Lee Joon Gi's dramas and my first sageuk "Faith". I handle it by watching the drama over and over again slowly cutting my scenes down to my favourites until I feel satiated then I am happy to move on to the next drama. I think it will take me a few months with MLSHR even though I have already watched up to ep 16 more than 4 times.  I can get over it quicker if LJG announces his next project then I can happily look forward to it. This is the first time I have gone overboard though in reading and writing in forums about a drama otherwise I keep my interest in LJG looking for news about him and his projects which hasn't been much until now. He has kept a pretty low profile in the media until MLSHR.

Sigh...last thing I do before heading to bed is check this forum.  First thing I did when I got out of bed is check this forum.  MLSHR has completely consumed my life.  I think about it constantly, wondering what will happen, replay different scenes in my head, replay the OSTs...I need serious therapy.  

What will happen to my poor soul after this ends?

Eun’s death made WS finally accept the thing he’s known for a long time - he is helpless to protect the people he loves; if he saves them from a sword there will always be an arrow coming from the other way. He’s reached an impasse and THERE IS ALWAYS ONLY ONE WAY OF THE CUL-DE-SAC. So’s always wished for HS freedom and happiness and live with her till their hair turned grey, yet HIS LOVE IS THE VERY REASON SHE IS IN A DANGER,a danger he doesn’t have the power to save her from. So the pragmatist he is, So does the logical thing and takes himself out of the equation, giving up his chance to be with her - once again, he PRIORITIZES - HER LIFE AND HAPPINESS ABOVE HIS OWN SELFISH DESIRES. Unlike Jung and Wook who treat her like an object and would make her live in a golden cage, HE IS THE ONLY ONE OF THE BROTHERS WHO KNOWS HE CAN’T HAVE EVERYTHING AND THE ONLY ONE WHO LOVES HER ENOUGH TO LET HER GO, even though it breaks him even more than Eun’s death ever could. So said it himself didn’t he - how could he possibly live without seeing her - and the answer is that he won’t be living, but only existing. The king’s position truly couldn’t give him his heart’s desires - he gained Soo’s love on his own and neither it can give him the freedom to be with her, BUT IT CAN GIVE HIM THE POWER TO PROTECT HER AND SET HER FREE. It’s the part of his promise he can still keep.

What guts you the most is that you know THAT THE FIRST THING WS WOULD DO AFTER BEING CROWNED WOULD BE TO FREE HS FROM THE PALACE,DAMNING HIMSELF TO A LIFETIME WITHOUT HER. His eternal loneliness is the ultimate price he is willing to pay in exchange for her freedom and safety because he LOVES HER SO MUCH HE CAN’T BE SELFISH WITH HER and it doesn’t come as a suprise because even years ago he was capable of such sacrifice when he offered her marriage and subsequent divorce just to save her from slavery. The knowledge that she would be free and safe is enough for him because he would never ask of her to wait when he can’t marry her, when he can’t give her everything - he loves her too much to ask that of her.

“Now I must look like a monster in your eyes, too. I did kill Eun.”

It’s the ultimate, heartwrenching irony of fate is that Wang So sarcastically and self-depricatingly tells HS that now she must think of him a monster IN THE VERY PLACE WHERE SHE PREVIOUSLY TOLD HIM HE WOULD RUIN EVERYTHING AND THAT SHE WAS AFRAID OF HIM. And finally, the fact thatHE IS IS BREAKING UP WITH HER IN THE VERY PLACE WHERE SHE HERSELF TOLD HIM TO LET HER GO, TO LEAVE AND GO FAR AWAY AND NEVER RETURN. In the end, SHE GETS HER WISH AND PUNISHMENT - she feels the same desperation So felt when she was pushing him away, it’s HER NOW WHO IS AFRAID SHE IS ABOUT TO LOSE HIM FOREVER.

- or future-oriented

Great thoughts as usual dear.

I think the message of this show has always been how difficult it is for people to change. But it is a fact of human nature and a fact of life. Suffering, pain on the other hand, are all part of the mechanism through which that change occurs. As I've said previously, people don't change people... but circumstances... and more specifically suffering do. It is easy to live in the past hankering for what used to be but sooner or later the caterpillar must leave the cocoon after metamorphosis and take flight. For most the past is a comfortable place because at the very least, it is a known quantity.

The real tragedy of Eun and Seon Deok for me is that squandering of 3 years. Even if they were unjustly killed and both died relatively young, if they had shared more moments like the one that had in Ep. 15, their deaths would have been less of a tragedy. I think people in those times had very little expectations of living long lives in the way that we do so they married younger, had kids younger and did most of what they had to do before they were 30. If it wasn't disease, ill health or poverty that took that them early, it was war and violence. They had a much bleaker view of the world and they were more prepared to deal with it.

I've never been really critical of Su in the way that many have been. Change is hard even when you know you should to accommodate the realities that you're dealing with... people cling on bitterly for dear life right up to the end. They even make themselves sick over it. I know I've lived it. Fear of the unknown, fear of losing yourself. It's far too easy to resist change because you can't control the future or the outcomes. The future is an unruly mustang or brumby (as we call them here in Oz) that just can't be micromanaged. At least not in the way Uk would like to.

This is what I've appreciated about the writing. Contrary to what people think, the writer is quite aware of the shortcomings of the characters. They are factored into the storyline and its general trajectory. Their inherent weaknesses, good/bad choices and lack of resolve all contribute to how the story unfolds as much as their relationships do. Even though Su is the wildcard and stirs things up in this drama, everyone chooses how they want to live.

Speaking of choices, I've been meaning to give props to the lad that plays Yo, Hong Jong Hyun. I think he's done a sterling job with the material. He's probably been given some of the best lines in the show especially in Ep. 16. He plays Yo with such relish and a great sense of irony even when he's degenerating through paranoia. On some level he is right to be paranoid because So and Ji Mong have been actively conspiring against him. On top of that, his mother is now telling him to make Jeong his successor which exacerbates his paranoia. There's a nice irony in what he says to her. A self-deprecating awareness behind the tyrannical mask.

I absolutely love the line about the breeding-pig. My fellow subbers at DSS tell me that it refers to a king that's washed out and only good for passing down the throne. LOL. 

That's the thing I like about Yo... he knows his ambitious and he's a bad guy on some level. And he even knows subconsciously that his Nazi-Bene Gesserit mother is using him as her pawn in her chess game. And while his hallucination scene in the broadcast version is a hoot, what I loved more was that Sauron voice going "Yo, Yo". 

And really... we have him to thank for in bringing So and Su back together. Without him, we wouldn't have gotten the night of passion. Personally I think we have much to thank him for in this show. If he hadn't tricked Eun into getting So unmasked we wouldn't have gotten Goryeo BB cream and the start to the OTP's romance.

I know we all praise LJG to the skies here... and he really does deserve it. However, I can't agree that he singlehandedly holds this show together or elevates it. If the rest of the cast were that mediocre, I doubt this show would have much staying power. At least not for me anyway.

Wang Yo hasn't named a crown prince yet so I think the throne will be up for grabs should Yo die without giving instructions for the next heir. It's so hard to choose! I listen to the OSTs everyday and fall in love every single time. But here's my top 3:

1. My Love - Lee Hi

Every time I listen to this song, Lee Hi's voice pierces through my heart.  I unconsciously imagine scenes of So and Soo, and even make up scenes in my head.  This song, for me, represents their love and struggles.

2. Can You Hear My Heart - Epik High ft. Lee Hi

It's a refreshing, upbeat song that's pleasure to my ears. Lee Hi's voice in the chorus is so angelic. For me, this song represents their friendship. This was the song played during Hae Soo's first day as a court lady in the palace and she and So were walking around. "I'm not alone. You're here, your highness."

3. All With You - Taeyeon

This was the song played during So and Soo's scene in episode 16 when Soo was taking care of Soo and they made love, etc. It represents Soo's love for So.

Maybe it's just me, but every time I see someone complain about the lacking of changing in the characters, I can't help but strongly disagree.  I mean, the first time skip was only one year... how can a person change much in such a short time? Are you really that much different from the person you were a year ago?  The second time skip was 2 years and we CAN see a difference in the character's behavior. it's subtly but is there. HS changed a lot, she acted much more reserved than her old self and looked older, too. So did as well, he was more carefree than his old self. We can't see much difference in other characters because they're not in the spotlight for longer enough to notice. 

The only time skip I would agree that there's not much change is the third one ( 2 years), that probably only happened to stay true to the timeline of events.  Overall, If you compare how the characters acted in the beginning to how they act now, you can see the change.  

I understand that when a time skip happens you expected to see a big change, but it seems like some ppl expect them to be a completely different person and, in such a short time ( and w/ no external reasons) , that would be unrealistic IMO. 

 

That website? They are extremely bias and write reviews and recaps solely based on their preference. I avoid that website. They just make my blood boil.

Thank you for the new stills @briseis  I love HS's look in these, she's soooo pretty, but why is she with Jung ? I guess this is once WS becomes king. Also, how are you guys all doing ? How is your obsession with scarlet heart ? Mine is definitely getting worse, what can I do ? I just love this drama so much, and I'll cry buckets when it's over.

The time skips aren't great in this drama I agree with that, but it doesn't ruin my enjoyment of the drama. I actually think the 3rd time skip was the best. It wasn't just a small title card at the beginning of the episode. They made an effort to show change of season that implies passage of time. I wish they would have done something similar with the other time jumps so it wasn't so jarring. But again a small gripe. I watched the CVersion and really the time jumps weren't any better...so...there is that.

• Part 8: I Confess (SG Wannabe): This song... I just looooove listening to it! I always get excited when it comes up in my playlist. The singer's voice is just... Also, this song's lyrics scream Wang So (lyrics are definitely written from his perspective)! xD
• Part 1: For You (EXO): I have heard other songs before this one, but this was the first song that stood out to me (the 'ta tara tara ta ra ra tara' part gets to me everytime) I loved it the moment I first heard it  The official MV also plays in my head whenever I hear this song, makes me remember the earlier episodes... back when they all got along and when HS was happy...
• Part 10: My Love (LEE HI): Out of all the recent songs that I have been released, this one grown on me! I love the singer's voice (oh screw it, I LOVE ALL THE SINGER'S VOICES IN ALL THE SONGS). But this song is very pleasant to listen to ^^
