WEEKEND BOX-OFFICE: ‘Escape from Mogadishu’ places first

The Kim Yoon-seok-Jo In-sung film “Escape from Mogadishu” topped the weekend box office in South Korea and emerged as the No. 1 top-grossing Korean film this year to date.

Based on the numbers from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), “Escape from Mogadishu” emerged as the No. 1 film for the weekend box office from Aug. 6 to 8, selling 480,495 tickets and earning $4.25 million.

The film is the only Korean movie which has sold one million tickets this year and is set to reach 2 million. As of Aug. 9, “Escape from Mogadishu” has sold 1.71 million tickets and grossed $14.46 million.

It premiered at No. 1 at the Korean box office on July 28 by selling 126,670 tickets, the highest opening day record for a Korean film this year.

“Escape from Mogadishu” tells the story of personnel of the South and North Korean embassies escaping Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. In 1991, a civil war broke out in Mogadishu. The South Korean embassy’s staff and their families became isolated. One night, a group from the North Korean embassy knocks on their door asking for help. Their goal is to escape Mogadishu.

Here are the 10 top-grossing films in South Korea based on the weekend box office from Aug. 6 to 9:

Korea Box Office: ‘Escape From Mogadishu’ Overpowers ‘The Suicide Squad’

“Escape From Mogadishu” held on to its place at the top of the South Korean box office for the second weekend. It comfortably overcame the challenge from newly released “The Suicide Squad.”

“Mogadishu” earned $4.26 million in its second weekend of release, down only 14% compared with its first session, in which it took $4.96 million. Since its July 28, 2021 debut “Mogadishu” has accumulated $14.5 million, making it the sixth ranking film released in Korea this year and the top locally-made title of 2021, according to data from the Korean Film Council’s Kobis tracking service..

Spoiler

“The Suicide Squad” opened earned $1.66 million over the weekend and $2.57 million since its release on Wednesday (Aug. 4).

Other new releases also fared relatively poorly. Japanese animation, “Doraemon The Movie: Nobita’s New Dinosaur” scored $295,000 over four days and was only good enough for fifth place over the weekend. “The Green Knight” earned $56,000 over the weekend and $87,600 over four days. “Blackpink: The Movie” earned $65,200 over the weekend and $135,000 over four days.

The aggregate weekend box office weighed in at a lightweight $7.88 million, compared with $8.74 million the previous weekend, but higher than the $6.47 million achieved a week earlier.

The weekend totals are roughly double those in the first quarter of the year. But since June they appear to have reached a new plateau from which it is still hard to go higher and get anywhere near pre-COVID levels of attendance and revenue.

“Boss Baby: Family Business” (aka “Boss Baby 2”) slipped to third place on its third weekend of release in Korea. It earned “640,000, down 38% compared with its previous weekend, for a 19-day cumulative score of $6.56 million.

“Black Widow,” which remains the highest grossing film of the year in Korea, held on to fourth place over the weekend with a $466,000 haul. Since release on July 7, 2021, it has amassed $25.7 million.

THE SUICIDE SQUAD Fails to Take Out ESCAPE FROM MOGADISHU

Local Blockbusters Shut Out Hollywood in Summer Season

Local blockbusters continued to hold the foreign competition at bay during the summer holidays, as sales were down a slight 10% week-on-week. Out of a total of 895,000 admissions, the local market share stood at 57%, a figure that should rise further this coming week with the entry of another hot local title.

Ryoo Seungwan’s Escape from Mogadishu claimed the top spot again after a strong 14% hold kept it far above the competition. With 480,000 entries (USD 4.26 million) banked during its second weekend, the action-thriller has so far reached 1.71 million viewers (USD 14.47 million). Though big competition is on the way, strong word of mouth could carry the film to the best total at the Korean box office in 2021 within the next few weeks, which is currently held by Black Widow.

Opening in a distant second place was the DC Comics title The Suicide Squad. Despite strong reviews, the film opening with just 177,000 sales (USD 1.66 million) over the weekend, with a total of 281,000 tickets sold since its Wednesday (USD 2.57 million) debut.

In its third week, the animated sequel Boss Baby: Family Business was down 43%, adding 79,000 admissions (USD 640,000) to a total of 837,000 sales (USD 6.55 million) so far.

Marvel film Black Widow remained a presence after slowing 46% and filling 51,000 seats over the weekend (USD 465,000). The film’s 2.91 million admissions (USD 25.71 million) total is the best score of the year to date, but it may not hold on to the title for very long.

Opening in fifth place was the latest Doraemon the Movie, Nobita’s New Dinosaur. The Japanese animation debuted with 28,000 sales (USD 215,000) over the weekend and a total of 39,000 entries (USD 294,000) were recorded over its first four days.

Though Escape from Mogadishu is still going strong, local competitor Sinkhole, a disaster comedy from Showbox, is threatening to take over in pole position this coming weekend. Meanwhile, the US title Free Guy is also set to open.

"Mogadishu," which was released in the U.S. and Canada after Korea, has achieved a successful release in more than 50 countries around the world by selling overseas theaters.

The movie "Mogadishu," which has been sold to more than 50 countries as a film that can be experienced in theaters, not only in OTT method, is considering not only 2D but also various global theater screening formats such as IMAX and 4DX. Large Recruitment...Netflix vs. OTT Operation Landing in Korea

spacer.png

This is an era of unlimited competition for OTT (Online Video Service). With changes in the domestic market starting with Netflix, Tving and Wavve are making all-out efforts to revive the pride of native OTT. On top of that, Disney Plus officially lands in Korea in November, and global OTTs such as Apple and Amazon are also about to enter the Korean market, and the heat of the content war continues to heat up.

It has already confirmed that domestic contents are competitive in the world through global platforms such as Netflix. At a time when content has been advanced, the production team is now actively recruiting stars and trying to increase the competitiveness of content. In particular, interest in stars has increased as the platform starts, and it is burning its will for box office success. Star casting, which can raise viewers' interest first, is currently the biggest topic of OTT competition.

...

Disney Plus, which is preparing to land in South Korea, is also preparing for "Moving" as its first film. It is no exaggeration to say that all the top stars are gathered, and "Moving," which stars Jo In-sung, Han Hyo-joo, Cha Tae-hyun, and Ryu Seung-ryong, will show the essence of fantasy. Expectations are high as actors are also making efforts to improve quality in action schools.

OTTs landing in Korea are joining hands with stars for a stable penetration of the domestic market. Even if stars are at the forefront, it is not guaranteed to be a work and a box office hit. It is already a lesson learned from many years of watching. However, it is also a reality that the news of stars' appearance alone gathers expectations from viewers.

Action blockbuster 'Escape from Mogadishu' sold to 50 countries

By Kwak Yeon-soo

Action blockbuster "Escape from Mogadishu," the most-watched homegrown film of this year, has been sold to 50 countries across the world, the film's local distributor said Thursday.

Lotte Entertainment confirmed that it has locked in multiple deals on the international sales rights of "Escape from Mogadishu."

Among the 50 countries, the tent-pole film has sold to Europe (Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland), the Middle East and North Africa (the UAE, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Kuwait, Yemen, Syria, Oman and Ethiopia) and Asia (Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Mongolia, Indonesia and Malaysia).

Since the film is intended for theater-only releases, the distributor is considering selling it in various formats, such as IMAX or 4DX.

Directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, whose other works include, "The Berlin File" (2013), "Veteran" (2015) and "The Battleship Island" (2017), the film tells the story of South and North Korean diplomats during the Somali Civil War in 1991.

Amid the chaos of the uprising in the Somali capital city of Mogadishu, two South Korean diplomats ― played by Kim Yoon-seok and Zo In-sung ― join hands with two of their North Korean counterparts ― played by Huh Joon-ho and Koo Kyo-hwan ― on a mission for survival.

"Escape from Mogadishu" has attracted over 1.9 million moviegoers since its release on July 28.

Jo In Sung’s “Escape From Mogadishu” Becomes 1st Korean Film Of 2021 To Surpass 2 Million Moviegoers

“Escape from Mogadishu” has reached an impressive milestone at the Korean box office!

On August 13, Lotte Entertainment announced that as of 12 p.m. that day, “Escape from Mogadishu” had officially surpassed 2 million moviegoers. The film was originally released on July 28, meaning that it took 17 days to hit the 2 million mark.

Notably, “Escape from Mogadishu” is the first Korean film of 2021 to draw over 2 million moviegoers—an especially remarkable feat considering that the Korean government has currently placed the greater Seoul area under the strictest level of social distancing guidelines.

“Escape from Mogadishu” is also the fastest Korean film to hit 2 million moviegoers since 2020’s “Deliver Us from Evil,” which was released in August of last year.

The OG oppas: Male leads we first loved in the 2000s

The K-drama fever has gone a long way from how it was in the past decades. Thanks to the rise of social media and the birth of more streaming platforms, people all over the globe now get to consume endless content, even from up-and-coming Korean celebrities.

But once upon a time in Hallyu history, there were oppas who had already succeeded in making us fall hard with their bewitching presence on-screen. Here is a list of male leads who will reaffirm our belief that first love never dies.

Jo In Sung

Jo In Sung makes up half the formula (the other half being Son Ye Jin) of the iconic jacket-under-the-rain scene often referenced in different K-dramas. It was from the 2003 hit film The Classic, a perennial tearjerker you should most definitely include in your watchlist. The following years saw his versatility as an actor, as shown in What Happened in Bali and Spring Day.
