Jo In-sung donated 800 million won in the past 10 years to Asan Medical Center in Seoul - Spreading good influence

 

 

According to Asan Medical Center in Seoul on the 13th, actor Jo In-sung has continued to donate for pediatric and adolescent patients at the hospital for the past 10 years. Since donating 50 million won to Asan Medical Center in Seoul in the winter of 2011, he has donated 50 million won in 2012 and 100 million won every year from 2013 to 2019 to a total of 800 million won of support.

Park Kyung-rim, a broadcaster who has been close to Jo In-sung since his appearance on MBC's "New Nonstop," also participated in the sponsorship in 2019.

 

So far, seven celebrities, including Jo In-sung, have donated a total of 1.62 billion won, which has been used for 217 patients who are struggling with treatment due to financial burdens. Patients with severe and rare incurable diseases, such as newborns suffering from pulmonary hypertension and dyspnea syndrome, 5-year-old boys who need chemotherapy for acute lymphocyte leukemia, and 18-year-old boys who need surgery for congenital nasal deformity and cleft lip, will be relieved of the cost of treatment.

 

Asan Medical Center, the first general hospital in Korea to launch the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Committee, has made various efforts to fulfill its social responsibility.

It has also provided a total of 275.3 billion won to promote the development and welfare of our society, including social welfare support projects, scholarships for low-income college students, academic research projects to support social development.

Well Go USA Entertainment Acquires North American Rights To Korean Film ‘Escape From Mogadishu’

 

 

International and indie film distributor Well Go USA Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Korean film Escape From Mogadishu. It will open in theaters in the U.S. and Canada August 6 following a July 28 release in Korea.

 

The film is based on true events and chronicles the harrowing experience of bitterly opposed North and South Korean diplomats trapped in the city of Mogadishu at the advent of the Somalian civil war in 1991. The dramatic years-long conflict, which exploded following the rebel-led ouster of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre, was introduced to American audiences through blockbuster film Black Hawk Down, which picks up the narrative in war-torn Mogadishu in 1993.

“The film portrays this almost unfathomable event that throws the horrors of war into sharp relief,” said Well Go CEO Doris Pfardrescher. She noted the production team’s careful study of surviving embassy records and historical accounts to create the most realistic possible depiction.

 

Escape From Mogadishu was directed by Ryoo Seung-wan (The Berlin File, Veteran) and features Kim Yoon-seok (The Chaser, The Yellow Sea), Huh Joon-ho (Kingdom, Illang: The Wolf Brigade), Zo In-sung (The Classic, The Great Battle), Koo Kyo-hwan (Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula, Netflix’s Kingdom: Ashin of the North), Jeong Man-sik (The Swordsman, Rampant) and Kim So-jin (The Spy Gone North, The King).

 

“We tried to depict the extreme tension lived by these isolated people during the civil war of Somalia,” said Hye-jung Kang, a producer with Filmmakers R&K. “We hope North American audiences will also have a most vivid and immersive movie-going experience, the kind that comes from viewing these extreme situations in theaters.”

 

The deal was negotiated between Lotte Entertainment and Pfardrescher on behalf of Well Go USA Entertainment.

NYAFF 2021: OPENING NIGHT FILM, ADDITIONAL TITLES REVEALED

 

 

Ryoo Seung-wan’s action thriller ESCAPE FROM MOGADISHU has been announced as the opening night film for the 2021 New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF). It joins over 60 previously announced and new films that will screen at the hybrid festival — both virtually and in person — between 6 and 22 August 2021.

 

The film will arrive fresh from opening in its native South Korea in late July. Set in war-torn Somalia in 1991, it depicts the perilous escape attempted by North and South Korean embassy workers who were stranded during the conflict. Veteran director Ryoo, who we last saw in a similar historical action-thriller with The Battleship Island (2017), brings stars Kim Yoon-seok, Jo In-sung, Heo Joon-ho and Kim So-jin to his cast.

The action-suspense film "Escape from Mogadishu" is based on real events and is set during the Somali Civil War that occurred in 1991. The story depicts the details of dangerous escape attempts made by the isolated people who were stuck during the war.

Film distributor Lotte Entertainment generously shared on their official YouTube channel the behind the lens video of the much-awaited Korean movie "Escape from Mogadishu." It has been said that the video have three parts in the format of three short documentary films.

 

 

"Motive" is the title of the first part, where it will directly show what the story concept of the film is all about. Second is the "Mogadishu," a video that covers all the filming locations used in the movie. And lastly, the third part will give a sneak peek of all the casts and their teamwork on and off the camera.

For the first part "Motive" the casts look back on their experiences while filming the project and discuss their first impressions upon the first day they've met during the script reading. All 8,000 tickets for 'Escape from Mogadishu' sold out in 40 minutes.

 

The movie "Escape from Mogadishu," which is about to be released later this month, is drawing keen attention from prospective audiences. As soon as the reservation event was held, tickets were sold out in less than an hour.

 

On the afternoon of the 21st, a reservation event for "Escape from Mogadishu" was held through Lotte Cinema's official website.

'Escape from Mogadishu' reenacts heart-warming story of North and South Koreans

It is widely known that the ongoing Somali Civil War started in 1991 with an uprising by the clan-based armed opposition group, or the United Somali Congress (USC), against a military junta led by Siad Barre. 

However, the upcoming film, "Escape from Mogadishu," intends to shine the spotlight on the dramatic true story of South and North Korean diplomats coming together to flee the chaos in Somalia during that time. 

"When I read the script for this film, I thought it would be a wild and bold challenge (to make it into a film). I wondered how director Ryoo Seung-wan would make it possible. But if it can be made possible, I thought I should be part of it and took the role placing my faith in the director," actor Kim Yun-seok, who plays the South Korean ambassador, said during a media conference for the film, held in Lotte World Tower, Songpa-gu, eastern Seoul, Thursday. 

Set in the capital city of Somalia, Mogadishu, the film starts by describing the background story of South Korean diplomats ― ambassador Han Shin-sung (Kim) and counselor Kang Dae-jin (Zo In-sung) ― and their antagonistic relationship with the North Korean diplomats ― ambassador (Huh Joon-ho) and counselor (Koo Kyo-hwan). 

The two diplomats were stationed there on a diplomatic mission to convince the Somali government to back its membership in the United Nations in 1991.

However, when the opposition group took over the city, calling for a city-wide evacuation of residing embassies, the two ambassadors form an unlikely alliance to make it out of the country alive.

"'Escape from Mogadish' is a perfect movie to watch in summer. It's a movie that we can proudly present to audiences," Kim said, sharing his feelings after screening the movie. "The film is full of energy. I didn't realize how dynamic the story will unfold when I actually filmed it, but I was immersed in it from the beginning to the end."

The action blockbuster takes audiences on a 121-minute long ride through convulsive threats and attacks amid the civil war, and the North and South Koreans' heart-racing escape for survival. 

Director Ryoo, who has extensive experience in leading tent poles like "The Berlin File" (2013) and "The Battleship Island" (2017), said the key goal during the production was to create a safe environment. 

"My philosophy is that you get the best scenes when you have the safest environment for filming," he said. "Filming overseas for four months is not easy. One of my main priorities was to set up ways for the crew and cast members to complete the production without getting injured ― both physically and mentally."

Along with the fast-paced action sequences, the film also portrays people from two divided countries establishing a sense of companionship by going through a life-or-death mission. 

"The film is set in an isolated place with the civil war at its peak. So I needed to recreate the tension, fear, and desperation people felt under that situation," he said. "When you shoot such large-scale films like this, you might steer away from focusing on the characters along with the flashy action sequences. So I tried to not lose my grip and to bring out the sentimental side of the story."

Zo recalled the time he stayed with the cast members for months in Morocco, before the pandemic, to film the movie. "I have been working on projects in which I was usually the sole lead. So I took this role because I wanted to be part of something that I can work together with veteran actors in," he said. "When I screened the movie, it reminded me of the time we basically lived there together. So this film comes to me as extra special."

While the world was divided into two groups of capitalism and communism, the African continent with about 50 nations, known as the third world, was considered to have the casting vote at a United Nations General Assembly.

The upcoming local action movie "Escape from Mogadishu," based on a true story, is set in the African country of Somalia at the end of 1990, when the two Koreas were competing for membership in the United Nations.

There, diplomats from the two Koreas make desperate efforts to ask the Somali government to vote for their own countries on a possible General Assembly ballot for new members.

South Korean Ambassador Han Shin-sung (Kim Yun-seok) is in high spirits on his way to a long-awaited meeting with the Somali president. He anticipates a promotion after returning to Seoul as he is confident of winning Somalia over South Korea's side and help his country join the UN.

While rioters attack the North Korea Embassy in protest against the Somali government, Lim abandons his mission and asks for help in the state of emergency to the South Korean Embassy, which is guarded by armed police, as a last resort.

Upon advice by spy agent Kang Dae-jin (Jo In-sung) to persuade the stranded North Koreans to defect to the South, Han reluctantly accepts the North Korean people and lets them stay together at the mission.

Their unexpectedly sudden co-habitation is not as nice and simple as occasional quarrels and fights break out between officials from both sides.

But they have to end their altercations as the Somali police leave the South Korean mission, which is now exposed to the armed insurgents and falls into grave danger.

From this point on, South and North Korean people forget their nationality and ideology, and think of the same goal: run for their life and get to the Italian Embassy, where they can catch a rescue plane.

The climax of "Mogadishu" starts here as four cars bulletproofed with books and sandbags fly down the war-torn streets of Mogadishu under a storm of bullets.

The deafening sound of heavy-caliber gunfire, car crashes and tire skids echoing throughout the downtown creates a tense and violent atmosphere as if life and death of the two Koreas is at stake there.

Director Ryoo Seung-wan, who gained popularity for his kinetic and intense action films like "The Unjust" (2010) and "The Berlin File" (2013), exerts his ability again to build up emotional tensions among characters and feature dynamic action scenes in 121 minutes.

The ensemble of the cast led by veteran actors Kim Yun-seok and Huh Joon-ho helps the story look more realistic, as their humorous dialogues does not seem awkward in the life-or-death situation and in the tragedy of the civil war.

The unexpected cooperation between South and North Koreans in a third country might be a corny and formulaic plot often seen in many Korean movies.

But director Ryoo does not fall into the melodramatic conclusion where the protagonists become close friends but have to say a tearful goodbye in the end. He keeps a moderate distance from an emotional approach to the inter-Korean relationships.

"Escape from Mogadishu" will hit local screens Wednesday, with special versions like IMAX and 4-D also available.
