You Are My Spring: Episodes 1-2 Open Thread

And we’re off to a strange start, folks! The premiere week of You Are My Spring delivers on the exact multi-tone dimension hinted at in its promo material. We get a complicated and slowish start — but that slowness turns out to be a bit of a red herring, since each episode is punctuated with eerie goosebump moments, thrills, and enough strangeness to have me hooked.

 

EPISODES 1-2 WEECAP

 

We’re heading into You Are My Spring knowing that it’s about three adults who live trapped by what happened to them during childhood — so it’s not strange to find the drama starting with some backstory. The year is 1994. In a painful opening sequence, we meet our heroine and her little brother when they’re children, protected by their mother from an abusive, alcoholic father.

The three escape one night under cover of darkness, and we’re not quite sure yet what sort of scene they are fleeing from. What we learn is important, though, because this is where we understand the significance certain things have for our young heroine. For instance, her obsession with a children’s book version of Poe’s “The Black Cat,” and her yearning for the normal life she sees next door, where a loving father comes home to his children with tangerines.

 

We next meet our heroine in the present day. She’s KANG DA-JUNG (Seo Hyun-jin), a concierge at a big hotel. She’s competent, speaks three languages for her job, and seems to have pulled herself together as much as possible to live a normal life. But, as with any deep scars, they still affect her life, and most frequently her romantic relationships.

To help suss all this out, we meet our hero, JOO YOUNG-DO (Kim Dong-wook), a psychiatrist whose practice just moved to the same building where Da-jung lives. The common space on the roof, and general proximity amongst the neighbors, means these two run into each other quite frequently (and that becomes very important). But, their first meeting is quite contentious.

 

Da-jung’s friends own and operate the coffee shop on the ground floor of the building, and as she sits with them on the roof, she meets Young-do for the first time. He’s seen a peek into her apartment, and uses what he’s gleaned to psychoanalyze her right there on the spot. Even from the little we know of Da-jung at this point, we know he’s 100% on the money — like a Sherlock Holmes of psychiatrists, revealing more about herself by what she displays in her apartment than she probably ever realized.

Like any person exposed and made vulnerable, Da-jung loses her cool and actually grabs Young-do by the collar to get him to stop (lol). But, despite this uncomfortable start, the two don’t have that much trouble moving past it and treat each other in a friendly manner.

Jang Sung Hoon is about to make his first small screen debut by taking on the role of Secretary Choo, a handsome secretary for a hotel VIP guest. As he boasts a tall stature and warm visuals, he is expected to create a high synchro rate with the role of a real handsome secretary Choo.

 

Through his agency, Management Soop, Jang Sung Hoon said, "I am honored to be working with director Jung Ji Hyun. It was unbelievably happy and thrilling just to work with great seniors along with a good story." Showed enthusiasm.

 

Jang Sung Hoon debuted as a model for F/W Seoul Fashion Week in 2015 and was selected in British Vogue's 'World's Hot 50 Boys' in 2017. In this regard, the ambiguous 'Sanggyunrye Three-Shot', in which Seo Hyun-jin, Kim Dong-wook, and Seo Hyun-jin's mother, Oh Hyun-kyung, sat in one place, is drawing attention. In the play, the three people are sitting facing each other in the pizza shop of Da-jeong Kang's mother, Mi-ran Moon(Hyun-kyung Oh). Just finished Episodes 1-2, and wow ... just wow.

 

Based on the drama's initial description, I was expecting something totally different.  This is entirely more complex/dark.

 

I absolutely LOVE the leads and the secondaries are fun and a perfect counter to the insidious dark side of this drama - the blend is absolutely perfect thus far.

 

These first two episodes have been an incredible emotional whiplash with the stories unexpected twists/turns - I just hope they can maintain it.

 

The wait for episode 3 will be a long one ...

I'm here after the first episode and must admit, didn't see that coming. At all. 

After trailer I didn't have any good feeling about the drama, maybe I've saw the wrong one, don't know. But after the first few minutes in, I've... changed my mind. It can be really good, if they'll continue like this. 

The one that disturbes me the most is Kang Da-Jeong. The way she was decribed, the way her realtionship are in the present, I think she's the one that is most dangerous, close after her is Ju Young-Do, whose, well, not the brightest in the long run, but that makes him a lot more... suspicious. The one I'm actually the least concerned is Chea Jun - it's too obvious, and too... blunt to be anything than distraction. Still don't know about Ahn Ga-Yeoung. Well, we'll see, how it'll turn out. 

It was a good first episode. I'll see the next one, maybe something change.

I don't find Young Do or Da Jung are dangerous or suspicious of any matter..I'm just anticipating for the moment how they fall in love!Young Do's really a interesting psychiatrist who analyzes this and that too much even out of his profession room. And I guess that Chae Joon could be the son of the deceased detective who was murdered whom's heart was donated to Young Do, if he is, he might be also investigating about the culprit, errm...may be I was wrong. Yes, a lot to expect to be unfold...

I must admit, I liked Chae Joon’s way of courting Da Jung. Looking for her since childhood. But other side of him was really creepy. And a lot of questions in my mind. Is he really looking for her because he loves her or is there other reason? Maybe revenge? But most of all, is he really dead?
