Synopsis:

Gao Bing Zhu, a notorious deputy marshal at the bottom rung of society becomes a suspect after getting caught in a case. While trying to prove his innocence, he meets Baili Hong Yi, a young man trying to find out the truth about his father's death. The two work together, starting to investigate.

 

Due to a mission, Si Yue, a woman from a noble family approaches Gao Bing Zhu, who not only excels in martial arts but also has the cunning needed to survive. In order to find information related to the case, the two people from completely different classes who bear a mutual dislike for each other find themselves tied together. As they continue to dig into the truth, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that is capable of destroying the godly city and drenching Luoyang in blood.

Yes, based on a novel from the same writer of Longest Day in Chang'an. I believe it's also the same production crew, so the visuals, costuming, and technical aspects should be top notch.

i loved Huang Xuan from Tribes and Empires. Been such a long time since I saw him.

I caught several episodes over dinner last night. Aesthetically, it's not my cup of tea. The fights are nice (albeit somewhat messy to me). Intriguing story-wise, a whirlwind of activity.

Twelve episodes in and this has turned out to be pretty good. Keeping me riveted to the screen. Characters, fights and especially the plot.

@impoppies  This Drama takes it's time to warm-up.

- Ep 1:  Makes you want to give up.  It is like everywhere; But not going anywhere.

- Ep 3: The Plot starts to take Shape

- Ep 5: Starts to get interesting

- Ep 6: It is Wang Yi Bo's Episode  He makes me laugh.   Especially after his Visit to the Brothel.

 

So far, both Huang Xuan and Wang Yi Bo has done well. 

- Huang Xuan has Screen Presence.  His acting will Capture Your Attention.

- Wang Yi Bo is equally Impressive. 

- Victoria is the Weakest Link here.  Her Diction, Lines Delivery and Overall Acting needs improvement.  I hope she gets better as it gets along.

Ep 9

Wang Yi Bo as Baili Hongyi makes me laugh again.  They are at the Birthday celebrations of Princess Yongchuan.  The bad guy Master Liu Xun Shan is there.  Gao Bing Zhu seized the opportunity to go to Master Liu's Mansion to search for his Illegal Copper Biz accounts books.

 

Baili Hongyi (Wang Yi Bo) is trying to prevent him from leaving early.  He failed.  So he got on a horse and chased after him.  He called out to him to stall him at his Main Door. 

 

Cracking his head for a reason to talk to him, he suddenly said: "It's the Red Dates Cookies.  The Chef has not done a good job.  You see.........." 

 

Master Liu was stunned.    (And I laugh until my Belly aches.....  So Funny )

 

So far, he looks Serious but burst out occasionally with Funny Moments that can really makes you laugh...

Episode 9 also had that nice fight in the bamboo forest.

 

In one of the following episodes that scene of Gao and Er Lang in the carriage arguing was simply hilarity epitomized.

 

This show has certainly gone from 尚可 to 甚好.

 

Episode 12 ended on a bit of a Yibo cliffhanger.

Now that the other drama has ended, I am starting this one

 

Watching this gives me the vibes of the Demon Cat movie. Huang Xuan was excellent in that one. Is the film set the same? I marvel at the sheer number of extras hired for the town/street scenes.
 

So far 4 episodes in, the 2 male leads are doing fine. The female lead is lagging behind in terms of acting and diction, as pointed out by @hush puppy. Happy to see Song Yi here acting as Bai Li’s wife - she was excellent in that son-in-law drama.

I just finished Ep 12

1) Gao Bing Zhu's comrade (Wang Deng Cheng)  in the Ghetto is a Traitor.  He is quietly working for the Enemy - The Minister of War, Song Liang and their Big Boss, the 4 Seasons Divine. 

 

The Divine is one Big Scoundrel.  He once tried to kill the current Crown Prince Li Dun who was then returning to the Capital from Fan Prefecture. Gao Bing Zhu went to Li Dun's rescue.  The then Deputy Minister of War, Song Liang arrived and saved Li Dun and escorted him back to the Capital. But left Gao Bing Zhu to the mercy of The Divine. GBZ's 7 comrades joined him and in the process were killed by the Divine's men.  GBZ became an Outcast in the Ghetto and a Wanted Man by the Kingdom's officials.  So the audacity of  Wang Deng Cheng to help the Murderer of his fellow comrades in The Ghetto

 

2) Ep 12 ends with a Big Fight in the Arsenal within the Ghetto.  Luckily Baili Hongyi (Wang Yi Bo) understood Gao Bing Zhu's cue and went to inform Yue Hua (Victoria) and get reinforcements. And everybody in the good side were safe.  Baili Hongyi is not a Warrior.  So he uses very Layman's methods to fight back- so amusing

 

When Song Liang was caught, Baili Hongi asked him "My father worked hard and was not crazy for power. Why do you kill him?"

 

Song Liang said: "Baili Yan blocked my way. So I have to kill him".  At this moment, Baili Hongyi suddenly grew up. No matter how angry he was, he instantly understood how his father has been teaching him countless of times - The Law of Survival.  But he has ignored him.

 

He realises that his father had always been right.  The Truth that he - Bail Hongyi insisted on, was nothing more than arrogance and ignorance of the World.  The Wind is Blowing in Luoyang and no one can stay out of the matter.  Finally Baili Hongyi has grown up.

 

Therefore, even though Song Liang provoked him, Baili Hongyi did not kill him. In the past, he would have killed him in anger.

 

I believe the Divine will manage to escape.  Otherwise there will be no more Drama to watch......

The Difference Between Gao Bing Zhu and Baili Hongyi.

 

Baili Hongyi (Wang Yi Bo)

Brought up by his father The Minister of Works. Baili Hongyi's character-role in this drama is a Cold, Introverted, Cultured, Gentle, Stubborn but Kind Person. He is from a rich Family of Court Officials and loves Food.  Hence the way he eats in this Clip. 

 

Baili Hongyi only lives in his own world. He doesn't care much about his relatives and world affairs. He wants to be a Cloud, a Breeze: to go anywhere without restraint.  But the Death of his Father slowly makes him grows up.

Gao Bing Zhu (Huang Xuan)

- is a very important character in this story.  He is a man who bears a sea of blood.  A kind man who wants to help "The Untouchables" get out of the "Bad Wells" (or "Unwelcomed Wells")  But he is also An Untouchable. A former Deputy Officer of the "Bad Wells". Unlike the other 2 Protagonists, he must learn to be cruel.  And cruel if he wants to stand up

Eps 13 & 14: (Another 2 Exciting Episodes)

1) GaoBZ did not catch the mysterious Divine, did not see his face.  But was arrested by the Inner Guard.

2) Wu Youjue (Wu Siyue or Yue Hua's brother) was jealous.  Because Siyue dares to disobey him for GaoBZ. He wants GaoBZ to confess to collaborating with Song Liang.  Or he will detain all the 1,403 people in the Bad Well and make them pay.

3) WSyue was worried and argued with her elder brother to release GaoBZ. She asked GaoBZ why he confessed. Of course she didn't know that it is for the 1,403 Untouchables

4) So Siyue seeks Baili Hongyi's assistance.

5) Baili Hongyi is the "Brainy One" here.  From the records of Wang DengCheng's departure, he is able to pin-point the locations of WDC

6) Siyue found WDC. But was tricked by him instead.

7) To save Siyue, Baili Hongyi found a way to rescue GaoBZ from the prison. Because he knew that only Gao could find WDC.

8) WDC is Not an Original "Untouchable". He was someone Gao had saved 10 yrs ago. So naturally he has no real affections for the "Untouchables" and his Background is questionable. No wonder he is so cruel. He gave Gao 2 choices: to kill Siyue or WDC will kill Gao's mother.

9) Gao would rather sacrifice his own life than to kill Siyue. Siyue is touched. She has fallen in love with Gao.

10) But at that moment, Gao's mother revealed that she is not suffering from Dementia. All these years, she was just pretending.  She asked Gao to go ahead to do what he wants and commited suicide  with the Blade of WDC.

11) Meanwhile Baili Hongyi proposes to divorce Liu Ran. She quietly left home. While her father Liu Shi suddenly returns, after 5 years, and came to see his son-in-law, Baili Hongyi.  

 

 

Huang Xuan continues his amazing portrayal.  His crying scene is infectious.  You can really feel his Grief.  

 

Victoria:  Her range of facial expressions are "limited".  She either stares or frowns. With due respect, I felt nothing when she cries.  I hope her character-role will grow as the Story progresses.

 

I like the Opening Musical Scores.  They set the Mood.  And loves the ending song - so melancholic

Ok, I just got the opportunity to start this drama last evening, so was able to watch only one episode. I should say I definitely need some time to get used to the speed of the action scenes . So far they are too fast for me, especially close-range capture.

Since most of you have not catched up yet, I shall not say much for Eps 15 and 16 except that:

1) Our Mr Intelligent, Baili Hongyi has discovered something about the Copper Mine. And he is off to Mount Lian to investigate.  Liu Ran wanted to go along. So she smuggled herself into his Carriage. Baili Hongyi wanted to send her back. But relented at the last moment. 

 

One Ship has started sailing in Ep 15.  That of Baili Hongyi and Lady Liu Ran.  Baili Hongyi has started to open up to her: kinder, gentler. Why. By end-Ep16, they are in the same bed already.   I like Wang YiBo's performance.  Most of the Subtle Comic Moments seem to come from him. 

 

2) While another Ship has ran ashore.  That of Gao Bing Zhu and Wu Si-yue.  To fulfil his aim of finding The Divine who had killed 7 of his Comrades, GBZ joined the Intelligence Service.  He is Not allowed to Marry or Have any Children.  So Wu Si-yue is crushed.

 

3) The Divine must be someone Very Powerful.  So powerful that Duke Liu Xun Shan and the Minister of War, Song Liang are willing to be his Pawns.  I couldn't wait to find out who this Person is.

 

Who do you all think the Divine is? Lord Gao Sheng? Wu Youjue?  Why did Liu Ran's father, Liu Shi suddenly returns?  We will have to wait till the Finale to find out I guess.

The 3 Musketeers (GaoBZ+WSYue+Baili Hongyi) manage to get some Vital Clues.

 

Eps 17 & 18

1) Baili Hongyi went to Mount Lian (Lianshan) to investigate. And accidentally found a Half-Burnt Sheepskin with some remnant rhythmetic message on it.  The insane old man seems anxious about this Sheepskin. So it must be very important.

 

The crazy old man is Aisou, a friend of Informant Lin Zhong - the Man and his young daughter who were killed in the Opening Episode. Before he left for Luoyang, LZ has entrusted this Sheepskin to the old man.  Unfortunately the message is incomplete, since the Sheepskin is almost burnt.

 

The Prose on the Sheepskin reads:

The English Translated Version reads....

Dragons and Snakes slither around

Mountains overlook the crowd.

 

But the Mandarin lines spoken by Baili Hongyi reads:

"Dragons and Snakes conceal the Pathways ;

The Imperial Court and the people will conform to Mount Lian (Lianshan)"

 

- I supposed it means the Empress and her Court will be Overthrown by the Rebels who began their Preparations in Mount Lian.

 

** Baili Hongyi is so "Cute".  He will go tensed and clench his Fists whenever a woman touches him. Even his wife.

 

Baili Hongyi realises that the Crux of the Consipiracy is in Luoyang.  With Supervisor Zhang the Administrator  for the construction of the Heavenly Temple.  The Project Baili Hongyi, and thus the Ministry of Works was put in charge of. 

- Which is why they got rid of Baili Hongyi's father.

- Which is why when Lin Zhong and her daughter arrived in Luoyang, they look for Baili Hongyi and not any Court Minister. Because Baili Hongyi is in charge of the construction of the Heavenly Temple.  

 

He rushes back but the Assasins were waiting to finish him off.

 

2) Meanwhile GaoBZ while searching the residence of the rebel-Monk, Ruo-an intercepted the Pigeon-Messenger which carries the message detailing the location of Baili Hongyi.

 

Both GaoBZ and Si-Yue rushed to the rescue of Baili Hongyi. And the 3 Musketeers were temporarily re-united.

 

3) GaoBZ presented his Theory to his Boss and was given the Task to rat out the Spies in the Intelligence Service.  He is doing well.

 

4) Baili Hongyi knowing that his Life is in Danger tries to make Liu Ran  stays away from him.

 

5) Baili Hongyi conspires with Si-Yue to snare the Divine's people. Baili Hongyi offers himself as the Bait. He is meeting Supervisor Zhang in Liubai Building. Si-Yue and her men will cover him.

 

Will they succeed?  I doubt so. Otherwise we will have no more drama to watch.
