"It's a dream come true," said Filipina tourist Isabel Palijon, staring in wonder at a wooden pier framed by the turquoise waters of a Swiss lake and the towering Alps behind.

And she is not alone. Ever since the hugely popular South Korean series "Crash Landing on You" aired a romantic scene shot on this very spot, the picturesque village of Iseltwald has been overrun by Asian tourists.

The Netflix hit tells the unlikely story of a South Korean billionaire heiress who accidentally paraglides into the peninsula's demilitarised zone, crashing landing onto a chivalrous army officer serving North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Several flashbacks in the show take place in Switzerland, including a riveting romantic scene on Iseltwald's wooden pier, where the male lead plays a beautiful piano melody that echoes across the water as the girl he will later fall in love with arrives by ferry from Interlaken.

decided to run for cover.

- 'Romantic' -

"I wish someday someone would do that for me," said Jiah Hni Gwee, a 35-year-old from Malaysia, looking longingly at the spot on the pier where the piano stood.

"It would be amazing and romantic."

She was among dozens of tourists milling around the lakeside on a sunny day last week, as a large steamboat bearing a giant Swiss flag pulled up to the nearby dock, teeming with visitors.

The breathtaking scenery and the romantic setting have made the pier a must-see for so-called "CLOY" fans who make it to Europe.

The 16-part series started airing just as Covid-19 began and it became a must-watch in much of Asia during pandemic lockdowns.

A South Korean culture ministry survey found that CLOY was the second-most popular K-drama show among foreign viewers in 2021 after "Squid Game".

- 'Overwhelming' -

But its success has caused an unexpected headache for Iseltwald, especially since last year when travel restrictions were lifted across much of Asia.

"The numbers have exploded," local tourism office manager Titia Weiland told AFP.

She said it was difficult to calculate how many CLOY tourists had come but estimated that "for every local person living here, it's been 1,000 visitors".

She stressed that "almost everybody in Iseltwald -- population 400 -- is happy to have many tourists," but acknowledged "it has been quite overwhelming".

Last summer, up to 20 coaches began arriving each day, clogging traffic and sometimes blocking access to the village.

And locals complain that CLOY fans typically rush to the pier for a picture before moving on, often leaving a mess but little money.

In a bid to deal with the influx, the municipality last month announced only pre-booked coaches that pay for reserved parking spots will be let in.

And it installed a turnstile at the pier, which tourists can pass for a "selfie fee" of five Swiss francs ($5.50).

- 'Paradise on Earth' -

Sonja Hornung, the manager of the Strand Hotel that overlooks the pier, said the measures had made a difference and her restaurant gives customers a turnstile token.

"Last year, it was terrible, (but) it has gotten much better," she said, hailing the slot system that has dramatically reduced the number of coaches.

Some tourists, however, were a bit dismayed by the turnstile -- and the price.

"Oh, five francs!" Florita Lichtensteiger, a 64-year-old Filipina living in Switzerland, exclaimed as she showed up with several visiting relatives.

She grudgingly paid for them to go through, but did not follow, saying she had been here at least 10 times before. "All my guests want to see this place."

"It's not worth it," said Nayeon Park, a 21-year-old from South Korea.

Weiland insisted that the payment was needed for the upkeep of the pier, which had seen the number of people walking on it skyrocket.

"It has to be safe."

Iseltwald "is like paradise on Earth," she said. "We want to really try to keep it that way."

'Crash Landing on You' Filming Swiss Village, Busy with Tourists… inherit the toll

Fans flock to Lake Village with a population of 400 and traffic congestion... 7,000 won charge

The Swiss lake village, which was one of the main filming locations for the Korean drama 'Crash Landing on You', is bustling with drama fans.

AFP reported on the 9th (local time) that residents of Iseltwald, a small lake town with a population of 400, which was the filming location for "Crash Landing on You," began to collect tolls as tourists flocked to the point where they could not afford it.

The drama "Crash Landing on You", which aired from 2019 to 2020, tells the story of South Korean chaebol second-generation Yoon Se-ri, who crashes into North Korea due to a paragliding accident and falls in love with North Korean military officer Ri Jeong-hyeok.

This drama, which recorded a high viewership rating of more than 20% at the time of domestic airing, gained explosive popularity, especially in Asia, when Netflix was released and the early blockade of the Corona 19 pandemic (pandemic) coincided.

As the lead actors Son Ye-jin and Hyun Bin became lovers in real life and got married last year, the topic of the drama continued.

Iseltwald served as the background for the scene where Lee Jeong-hyeok plays the piano while thinking of his older brother while studying in Switzerland, and Yun Se-ri accidentally hears Lee Jeong-hyeok playing.

Since last year, Asian countries have become free to travel overseas, and the number of tourists visiting this place, where 'Crash Landing on You' was filmed, has increased.

In particular, the lakeside pier where Ri Jeong-hyeok's piano was placed became a must-visit place for tourists to take pictures.

"It would be amazing and romantic if someone did that for me," said Gianna Gwee (35), a tourist from Malaysia, looking at the lakeside pier where Ri Jeong-hyeok's piano was placed.

"The number of tourists has exploded," said Titia Vaillant, an employee at the local tourism office.

Local residents are not happy with the influx of tourists. As the number of tour buses entering the village increases, traffic jams occur and the access road to the village is blocked.

Residents also complain that 'Crash Landing on You' fans take pictures on the pier and make a mess of it, paying little to no money.

“Almost everyone in Iseltwald is delighted with the increase in tourists, but it is also difficult to handle,” said Vaillant.

For this reason, the local government introduced a reservation system in the parking lot last month and announced that only reserved buses can enter.

In addition, a ticket gate was installed at the pier on the lakeside, and it was necessary to pay 5 Swiss francs (7,200 won) to enter the pier.

Sonya Hornung, a staff member at the hotel overlooking the pier, said that the system has significantly reduced the number of buses entering the town. "Last year was terrible, but this year is much better."

Vaillant also emphasized that as the number of people walking on the pier has increased rapidly, they have to get paid to maintain the pier. "Iseltwald is like a paradise on earth and we want to keep it that way."

However, some tourists are disappointed that they have to pay.

Florita Lichtensti Tiger, 64, a Filipino living in Switzerland, said that only her relatives who came with her paid to enter and she did not go in alone.

"Five Swiss francs," he said in amazement.

The K-Drama was filmed in multiple locations in Switzerland, showing the beauty of the country. One of the filming locations was the Sigriswil Bridge, where Ri Jeong Hyeok unknowingly saves Yoon Se Ri’s life for the first time.

They also filmed the opening scene, where the two walked past each other in Lindenhof, Zurich.

The last scene of the last episode was also filmed in Switzerland—more specifically, Lake Lungern, a lake by the shore of the town of Lungern known for its views of the valley that looks like a scene out of a fairy tale.

One of the most famous filming locations for Crash Landing on You that fans enjoy visiting is Lake Brienz in a tiny village named Iseltwald. This was where Ri Jeong Hyeok played the piano without knowing he was saving Yoon Se Ri, who heard him from afar.

The view of Lake Brienz from the famous wooden platform | Ordinary Traveler

Iseltwald has a population of 400, but many tourists started to visit Lake Brienz after the popularity of Crash Landing on You. According to Switzerland’s local media report, about 400,000 people visited the site last year. However, villagers experienced inconveniences due to noise, garbage, and traffic congestion caused by the many tourists.

Therefore, Iseltwald introduced a new reservation system in the parking lot so that only buses that make reservations ahead of time could pass. In addition, the village installed a ticket gate by the pier of the lake so that tourists who want to visit must pay a toll fee of 5 Swiss francs, which is about ₩7,200 KRW (about $5.59 USD).

Meanwhile, Crash Landing on You had a record of the highest viewer rating of 21.7% (according to Nielson Korea) and set a record for tvN K-drama ratings.

'Crash Landing on You' Filming Swiss Village... “Now pay the toll”

2023.06.12

SOURCE

In the global social media and ever-changing Internet world, what reasons and videos have attracted the attention of netizens?

The first is the news that the Swiss Lake Village, which is famous as a filming location for Korean dramas, has decided to collect a toll tax as it is becoming overcrowded with tourists. Iseltwald, a small town with a population of 400 on the shores of Lake Brienz in Switzerland!

It is one of the filming locations for the drama ‘Crash Landing on You’ starring actors Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin.

However, after the drama became popular worldwide and movement restrictions were eased after Corona 19, the number of tourists visiting this place increased, causing residents to be troubled.

According to authorities, it is estimated that about 1,000 tourists visited each resident last year.

It is said that traffic congestion, garbage, and noise problems as well as the situation around the pier, which has emerged as a sacred place for proof shots of dramas, have become a mess as tourists flock to an unbearable amount.

After all, since last month, the local government of the village introduced a reservation system in the parking lot so that only pre-booked buses can enter and exit, and a ticket gate was installed at the lakeside pier so that you can enter the pier only after paying a toll of 5 Swiss francs and 7,200 won in our money.

However, some tourists are opposed to paying, and some point out that administrative measures such as limiting the number of visitors per day should have been considered first before the decision to collect tolls.

Thanks to Netflix, This Tiny Swiss Town Has More Visitors Than Locals

Crash Landing on You has driven a tourism boom to the peaceful lakeside village of Iseltwald. Residents aren’t thrilled.

The small fishing village of Iseltwald, Switzerland, is home to just about 400 people. Located on the southern shore of Lake Brienz, it’s long been quiet and uneventful, rarely visited by outsiders—until a popular South Korean TV show put it on the map for global travelers, practically overnight.

Since September 2022, Iseltwald has been hosting massive numbers of Asian tourists, mostly from South Korea and Southeast Asia. The volume of day-trippers has become so intense—sometimes outnumbering locals—that the village launched a double-decker bus service this month to ferry them to the scenic spots they come to see.

That’s thanks to the popular K-drama Crash Landing on You, which Nielsen Korea ranks as South Korea’s fourth-most-viewed TV show in history. After it debuted in 2019, a steady international rollout on Netflix Inc. snowballed the show’s audience. The show’s narrative is set in North Korea, where production was not possible; instead, many scenes were shot in Switzerland. A particularly pivotal scene takes place at Lake Brienz, whose stunning turquoise waters, flanked by mountains, are now etched in viewers’ minds.

That scene—a crescendo in the main characters’ relationship that features actor Hyun-bin playing the piano on a pier—has driven such intense tourism that Google Maps now calls it “Crash Landing on You filming location.” It’s become such an icon of romance that visitors use it as a backdrop for proposals, weddings, and engagement photos. Lake Lungern, a 40-minute drive east from Lake Brienz where part of another episode in the series was shot, has also experienced an influx of South Korean tourists.

Getting to either spot takes commitment. Since Lake Brienz is more easily accessible, it’s gotten the lion’s share of attention. Visitors typically fly to Zurich and take a 140-minute train to Interlaken Ost, then ride a bus for 25 minutes to Iseltwald. (Bern Airport is closer but much smaller—and would still require rides on trains and buses.)

On a recent midweek visit, the bus between Interlaken and Iseltwald is filled with Asian tourists toting selfie sticks and tripods. On arrival, each must now pay 5 Swiss francs ($5.50) to go to the edge of the pier to take pictures; the charge was imposed in May in hopes of curbing overtourism. All proceeds go directly to the municipality of Interlaken to help cover infrastructure costs related to the influx of visitors, such as garbage disposal, toilets and signage.

Most visitors (including this writer) stay for only an hour or two. Unlike the huge gains in tourism across Croatia that stemmed from zeal for Game of Thrones, or the spike in overnight stays at British countryside estates after Downton Abbey’s big run, TV tourism here stands to disrupt a pristine place and tiny community without bringing much economic benefit. With only a few modest hotels and restaurants in the village, few are cashing in meaningfully, though the family-owned Hotel Chalet Du Lac has enjoyed rising reservations from Asian guests in recent months. (Though the show’s streaming run ended early in 2020, the pandemic delayed the fans’ response.)

“I came to Switzerland 10 years ago, but at that time I didn’t know anything about Iseltwald,” says Young-ah Lee, 30, visiting from South Korea. “I found out about it through Crash Landing on You, and I’m glad I got to come here because it’s such a beautiful place to visit.”

Ramya Mamidi, 22, an Indian American from Philadelphia, came with her sister to photograph the location. “You could really see the beauty of Switzerland in the show. I think that’s something they did really well,” she says.

Even these visiting fans see the risks of introducing tourism on this scale to such a small destination. On her visit, Lee expresses conflicting feelings: “I think it’s great that the show increased exposure to this place that otherwise wouldn’t have had that many visitors, but I could also see how it could be bad for the residents who live here, because of the increase of noise and disturbance.”

Some elderly locals sit on a bench within earshot of chattering tourists. Asked about the influx, one of the women frowns and says in her limited English: “Too much.”

“Local people can feel a little overwhelmed by the situation, especially by this lake,” adds Markus Berger, head of corporate communications at Switzerland Tourism. “It’s a small village, who normally have this beautiful place to themselves, and all of a sudden you have hundreds of tourists every day.”

He adds that the language barrier—residents mainly speak German in central Switzerland, along with the country’s remaining official languages  French, Italian, and Romansh—forces a sort of culture clash on locals accustomed to few visitors. Complaints to town officials have streamed in. Managing the number of visitors while finding ways to cash in on them will be vital to making this tourism wave more sustainable.

The Asian TV tourism boom in Iseltwald is the talk of the region; Carolyn Lansdell, a professional paragliding tandem pilot in Interlaken, mentioned it in mid-flight during the author’s visit. Photographer: SUNNY KIM/Bloomberg

For now, momentum seems to be gaining. The new double-decker buses that started running from Bönigen to Iseltwald each transport up to 120 passengers, increasing capacity by 25%. Because parking is limited, buses must secure permits ahead of time. The sole alternative transport, due to limited parking for cars, is by ferry; ticket sales to Iseltwald are already up 40% year over year, says operator BLS Schiffahrt AG.

“Some say this is just a boom that will end, but we will continue to bring people over to Lake Brienz even when the drama is over,” says Berger. “It would be a pity not to bring people to this beautiful place.”

10 K-Dramas That Feature Chaebols

August 11, 2023

PREVIEW PH

Often shrouded in an aura of intrigue and opulence, chaebols are situated at the top of South Korea's societal pyramid. K-dramas offer us a slight glimpse into their daily lives, portraying characters who suit up as CEOs and retreat home to the most grandiose mansions. Stories usually portray how they gain a fresh perspective on life after encountering someone from the other side of society. More often than not, a little romance is sprinkled in for good measure.

Though, what is a chaebol in the first place?

The term "chaebol" is a portmanteau of "chae," which means wealth, and "bol," which means clan or faction. In essence, these are large conglomerates, usually in the fields of electronics, finance, and retail, that are s
olely owned and operated by one family. Modern-day examples would be the groups behind Samsung, Hyundai and LG.

Chaebols play a huge role in making South Korea a global powerhouse, given their large market shares and contributions to economic growth. Leadership of a chaebol group is typically treated like a family heirloom, which is why people born into these clans are perceived to have silver spoons in their mouths.
