It's a bummer that Netflix got it for us US viewers, but at least European and other International fans can enjoy it a week later!

@marykarmelina I guess locals are not that much interested?  This is for Intl audience. Oh well.. I'm not fond Netflix esp with having license of Kdramas. They just take  too long to sub. By time. drama will be almost  done..just like what happened to Bad Guys 2! just viewers/ potentials viewers got lost interested

Netflix Shines for Lee Byung-hun-Starrer 'Mr Sunshine'

Netflix has picked up multi-territory rights to Mr Sunshine, a new Korean period drama series starring Lee Byung-hun.

 

The show is written by Kim Eun-sook and directed by Lee Eung-bok, the pair who created smash it series “Descendants of the Sun.” Production is by Hwa&Dam Pictures, one of Korea’s top drama production firms, and Studio Dragon, who teamed up with Hwa&Dam for Goblin and Bravo My Life.

 

Running to 24-episodes, “Mr Sunshine” will premiere exclusively on Netflix starting July 7, with episodes streaming on the same day of its Korean broadcast in the U.S. and most Asian territories. The series will then premiere in Japan on July 8, and the rest of the world on July 19.

 

 

 

Yeah! Been waiting for this drama to premiere. I will be watching a korean drama again after so long. Hope it will be good.

 

Great news that it will stream on the same day of its korean broadcast on Netflix  in US and most Asian territories. Hope that Singapore is included. If so, I will subscribe to Netflix.

That is great news! may I ask where you heard about that so I can go google it all day long? Our house has a Netflix account so it would be great to watch it live streaming from there.

According to this article from Deadline, Netflix USA will have episodes the same day as Korea broadcast! Yay! So no more waiting for USA (for a change!)

4 Ways The Production Of “Mr. Sunshine” Has Already Reached Epic Proportions

“Mr. Sunshine” is about a boy who left Korea for the United States and returned as an American soldier to his homeland in 1871, a period when Korea was undergoing much change. It has been a highly anticipated drama, with a star-studded cast and created by writer Kim Eun Sook and director Lee Eung Bok, who previously collaborated on hit dramas such as “Descendants of the Sun” and “Goblin.”

 

To make the year 1871 come to life, the drama has poured much of its resources into creating the setting. Not only have they created never-before-seen sets to portray the historical aspects of the drama, they also traveled far distances to film and hired countless extras to capture life in the Joseon era. Here are four ways the production of “Mr. Sunshine” has surpassed other dramas.

 

1. Capturing the four seasons of Korea

In order to recreate the setting of this era, filming began in September of 2017 and has continued until today. The drama will show the beautiful scenery of the four seasons of Korea. In addition, it will also use computer graphics to add special effects and other post-production edits to properly portray the era.

 

2. Filming in all nooks and crannies of Korea

The setting of “Mr. Sunshine” is 1871, when three American ships invaded South Korea, and in 1900, the beginning of modern history in Korea. In order to be accurate historically, the production staff filmed at the actual locations where the historical events happened. This included visiting many major cities such as Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, and Incheon, as well as many areas in the countryside such as the North and South Gyeongsang, Jeolla, and Chungcheong provinces, spanning over 40,000 km (approximately 24,800 miles). The production staff particularly paid attention to recreating the historical event in 1871 when three American ships invaded Korea, using special equipment and effects.

 

3. Pouring resources into countless extras and costumes

The time period the drama covers is when Joseon is introduced to Western influences and experiences new cultural shock. To express this accurately, the production staff even recreated scenes from the Spanish-American war, and hired many foreign extras to film the war scenes. Overall, the production team had over 10,000 extras working on the scenes, and outfitted them all accordingly to the time period.

 

4. An enormous set of over 8,000 pyong (approximately 285,000 sq ft)

“Mr. Sunshine” also invested quite a lot of their resources into creating a set on a never-before-seen scale. In Nonsan, Chungcheongnam province, the production staff designed an outdoor set to show what the Korean empire and Japanese colonialism looked like during the early 1900s. The expansive set included buildings as well as transportation during the era such as streetcars, bridges, and city walls. Their studio in Daejeon was just as expansive, stretching over 2,000 pyong (approximately 70,000 sq ft) which included the set for Hotel Glory and the office of the American embassy.

 

A source from the production staff stated, “‘Mr. Sunshine’ aims to show a historical background and a story that hasn’t been told before in dramas. We have prepared a lot before filming. We have done our best to make it even better. We hope that viewers will be able to empathize with that era’s story.”

 

“Mr. Sunshine” will air on July 7 at 9 p.m. KST.

So, with this show, Netflix is kind of like a Dramafever + Viki hybrid. Released soon with full subs in 20 languages, that is really cool.

 

We were thinking of not recapping this one since Netflix is releasing subs so early. But since it doesn't seem like Canada, Europe, Africa, or South America are included, we think we will continue live recapping this one to help out all those drama loves!

 

I'm really excited for this show now. It is so much more enjoyable to watch a drama live when a lot of people have a good change of watching along.

Byun Yo Han Transforms Into A Sophisticated Playboy For “Mr. Sunshine”

Byun Yo Han is the ultimate modern man in a historical era for “Mr. Sunshine.”

 

Upcoming tvN drama “Mr. Sunshine” is about a boy who returns to his homeland Korea as an American soldier and falls in love with the daughter of an aristocrat.

 

In the drama, Byun Yo Han plays Kim Hee Sung, the fiancé of Go Ae Shin (played by Kim Tae Ri). After studying in Japan for 10 years, he returned to Korea to marry his fiancé. He is known for harboring hostility towards his rumored horrible father and grandfather, and especially known for being a wealthy, handsome playboy. The actor will be making his drama comeback after two years and four months since his last drama “Six Flying Dragons.”

 

In the released photos, Byun Yo Han wears a well-trimmed beard and sophisticated clothing. He smiles casually and gazes at a bouquet of flowers. In other photos, he is serious and appears lost in thought, pondering over something quite important.

It was revealed that from the first shoot, he always greeted each and every one of the staff members and kept the mood light on set with his refreshing personality, jokes, and conversation. When the camera turned on, he slipped easily into character and showed off his strong acting.

 

A source from the production staff stated, “Byun Yo Han will be making a shocking transformation into Kim Hee Sung, a character that thinks deeply about the life that he does not desire. [In the drama] Joseon is undergoing a period of turbulent change. Please look forward to how Kim Hee Sung will take part in that change.”

Okay, ready for this! Loved Descendants of the Sun and Goblin, so excited for this one! However, is it still wrong of me to wanted a different male lead? I like Lee Byung Hun but the 20 year age difference... He still looks young but she looks young enough to be his daughter! Now as a child he's 9 years old? How much of a time skip is there going to be?! Because LBH was cast, I was expecting the younger actor to be at least maybe pre teens? Like I was expecting/hoping for the male lead this time to be Lee Joon Gi or Jo In Sung.

 

Wait... maybe there could be a chance that second lead or third lead will get the girl! It's rare but not impossible! I feel like I'm going to have SLS or TLS anyway.

Blockbuster drama series “Mr. Sunshine” is to air soon. 

 

Cable channel tvN is soon to air its new Saturday-Sunday drama series “Mr. Sunshine,” featuring Lee Byung-hun and Kim Tae-ri as the main leads. 

 

Lee is to play Eugene Choi, who travels to the United States in the 1870s and returns to Joseon as a US soldier. Kim took the role of a character named Ko Ae-shin, a daughter of an upper-class family. She is to fall in love with Lee’s character and work together to save Joseon from Japan.

 

 

 

“Not many dramas or films have been made about the early 1900s. Not much history has been told too,” director Lee said at a press event held Tuesday at Patio 9 in southern Seoul. 

 

It’s Lee’s first time to feature in a drama series in nine years. 

 

“My character is very unique. He is an American soldier who is also a Korean. But he is not very patriotic about Korea, rather, he wants to have his revenge on the nation,” he said. 

 

The drama marks Kim‘s first small screen production. 

 

“I didn’t even read the scenario when making the decision to feature in the work,” Kim said. “My character is very ironical. She is defiant, rebellious but also a daughter of a noble family. She goes through inner conflicts, deciding what to take and what to throw away.”

 

The fantasy-romance series grabbed the attention of viewers even before the start, as it will be scriptwriter Kim Eun-sook and director Lee Eung-bok’s third time to work together, after hit series “Descendants of the Sun” and “The Guardian.”
