A fan translated Yejin's most recent Japanese interview. I saw this on Twitter and also another Soompi member posted in another thread. Sharing it here. I am just so in awe of her professionalism and talent. She is not only a tremendous actress, she also has the insight of a creative.

I really wish we got a CLOY dvd because I find her insights into scenes and her characters really interesting (like how she was the one who suggested dual roles in The Classic). She has so many ideas and the chops to execute them excellently. Hope we hear more from her in the fanmeet and casting news for a film soon!

One can measure the current avid Japanese fan interest in SYJ.

Son Yejin's Japan Virtual Fan Meet on August 30, 2020 sold tickets for about $17 for the 90 minute session. The average Tokyo movie theater ticket price is around $14,67. Her fan meeting is generating a premium of 16 percent.

It may be a live event, but all of the fan questions will be pre-screened so I do not expect any surprise answers.

"Crash Landing on You" star Son Ye Jin overwhelmed by boom in Japan

South Korean actress Son Ye Jin, who played the role of a wealthy heiress who lands in North Korea in a paragliding accident in smash hit drama "Crash Landing on You," said she is "overwhelmed" at the immense popularity the romantic comedy has generated in Japan.

"It has been a while since the series ended (in South Korea), but I'm surprised that people have continued to express their interest and love for it," Son said in a recent written interview with Kyodo News.

The 16-episode melodrama -- a love story between a South Korean heiress of a conglomerate family and a North Korean military officer -- has taken Japan and other parts of Asia by storm since it premiered on Netflix at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has forced people to stay at home.

"I think the warm atmosphere and sense of comfort surrounding the drama have offered (viewers) inspiration and happiness in the face of the global threat of the spread of the novel coronavirus," she said.

The 38-year-old actress also said she is "overwhelmed" to hear that their work "played a role in raising interest in South Korean dramas" in Japan.

In the series, which was aired on the South Korean cable network tvN between December and February, Son plays Yoon Se Ri, who crash lands on the North Korean side of the Demilitarized Zone after her paraglider is caught in a tornado.

Forced to live in the North while searching for ways to return to South Korea, she falls in love with Ri Jeong Hyeok, a military officer who comes from a powerful political family. The hero was portrayed by popular South Korean actor Hyun Bin.

Son said she gave much thought to how she could effectively portray her character, whom she refers to as "very optimistic and positive," as the heroine adapts to life in the North.

"There were many scenes where I had to deliver my lines like a rapid-fire gun," said Son, who is also popular in Japan for her role in the 2004 film "A Moment to Remember" in which she played a woman who has Alzheimer's disease.

"I tried to be expressive in various ways, not just facially but also through my body and hand movements," she added.

While the popular melodrama depicts life in North Korea, the filming was done in South Korea and Mongolia, among other places. It has scenes in which the protagonists travel to Pyongyang on a train, as well as eat and drink with locals.

Son said she cannot forget the scene towards the end of the series where the two characters bid farewell at the Military Demarcation Line that separates the North and South.

"It was when the emotions of the two characters exploded. I really thought about how to act it out and devoted much energy to it," she said.

"Many people who watched the drama told me that it shows the tragedy that resulted from the division and that they were moved," she recounted.

The series, which also portrays scenes of corruption in the North Korean leadership, is thought to have drawn criticism from Pyongyang, which has said that South Korean TV dramas are full of "falsified" and "fabricated" information.

Came across this video where Haha called up YJ during his interview on Taxi. Seems like a very funny call, because YJ didn't know that she was on a live program. No subtitles though.

Anybody has the Eng-sub or Ch-sub version pls?

Hi everyone. Came here after watching CLOY and being blown away by SYJ's amazing acting!  She was so great at both the comedy (loved all the scenes with the North Koreans, the ajummas and the boys, as well as Capt Ri of course) and the pathos.  Wow, did she hit the mark with all the crying scenes.  She just has a wonderful expressiveness in her acting, especially with her eyes, and a very charismatic screen presence that draws you in.  This was my first Kdrama so I have no benchmark to measure against but SYJ impressed me as a wonderful actor by any measure. She really breathed life into Yoon Seri and had amazing chemistry with every co-actor.  I look forward to more amazing work from her.

Currently digging into her filmography and old you tube interviews with Eng subs... hope there are other fans around here to answer some of my SYJ questions. :)

Just started to watch Something In The Rain.  Wow, tonally so different from CLOY but SYJ is really bringing that very realistic character to life as well.  i think she's very good at slice of life acting.  And again the romantic chemistry with her costar blows me away.

I think SYJ was very intelligent in choosing dramas like SITR followed by CLOY.  Very different genres, very different characters but very strong stories and memorable characters in different ways.  I am interested to learn more about how SYJ chooses her roles as it seems she's quite intelligent about it and that is a key to the longevity in her career. She likes being versatile and challenging herself with new kinds of roles, while also understanding her super strengths and what audiences like in her. I think.

Also just watched The Truth Beneath. I didn't realise Park Chan Wook co-wrote this film but it's great that SYJ was part of a film he worked on.  He and the Parasite director Bong Joon Ho are probably 2 of the most acclaimed directors in Korean cinema today so I would love to see them work with SYJ in the future. And also to see her work with more female directors like TTB director.  I think SITR director would also be great at a feature length romance film.  He definitely has a deft touch in directing romantic scenes.

I thought SYJ gave a raw, powerful and a new kind of performance in TTB in a very challenging role.  I love that she took on a challenging and darker role that wasn't necessarily easy to love.

I hope it won't be too long before we see her next work though I think she needs a well deserved long break after CLOY.  Maybe a few films before another drama.  I have hopes for The Cross as I thought Gattaca and The Truman Show were very good films.  No doubt acting in a Hollywood production and in English will be a new challenge for SYJ to embrace.

What are your favourite SYJ works and what kind of work do you want to see her in next?

Welcome! It's great to hear lots of people from different parts of the world, including me of course are loving Son Ye Jin and keeping this thread updated as there are many contributors here as well. She has lots of CFs pic nowadays so we are getting fed with her charms almost everyday. For her movies, aside from The Classic, which will always be classic for me,  her "A Moment To Remember " - she had me cried buckets here (and I'm sure others), but what made me admire her more were her performances in White Night and The Truth Beneath, her movie "My Wife Got Married" - this made me research more about the story and have read some analysis because I wanted to explore her depth when it comes to acting choices. Almost all her filmographies brought out the best in her.

Like what you said and based from her past interviews (there are links few pages back), the way she chooses her roles depends on  the story, the importance of the character she's playing and someone that challenges her acting versatility then the director/pd (if I remember it correctly), price/money doesn't bother her much because she gives importance to her craft. Am I correct @Helena?  and maybe other members can add or correct me?

This forum helped me discover her as person, you can also check twitter fan accounts, they also have very good sources of her old interviews, CFs, and the like. :foryou:

After Crash Landing On You became a global hit, attention is focusing on Son Ye Jin’s next move.

Earlier on August 25, a media outlet reported that Son Ye Jin is coordinating the details after getting an offer from the drama Cut from the Heart (literal translation). However, according to Son Ye Jin’s agency MSTeam Entertainment stated, “It’s one of the scripts she received, and nothing has been decided.”

Meanwhile, Cut from the Heart is known to be a story of Pyung Kang, who used On Dal’s heart with a dream of becoming the King, and the mournful love of On Dal, who sacrificed everything. If Son Ye Jin confirms her appearance, then it will be her first historical drama on the small screen since 2002 drama The Great Ambition.

Son Ye Jin And Kang Ha Neul In Talks To Lead New Historical Drama

Son Ye Jin and Kang Ha Neul may be returning with a historical drama!

On August 25, Sports Seoul reported that Son Ye Jin is currently in talks to star in the drama “Cut by the Heart” (literal title). The upcoming historical drama will be about the tragic love story between Princess Pyeonggang, who uses On Dal’s feelings to her advantage, and On Dal, who makes foolish sacrifices. Son Ye Jin is in talks to star as Princess Pyeonggang.

Following reports, a source from Son Ye Jin’s agency MS Team Entertainment shared, “It’s one of the projects she has received offers for, and nothing is decided yet.” They continued, “Currently, Son Ye Jin is fine-tuning the details for her next project, the Hollywood film ‘Cross.’”

Directed by Andrew Niccol, “Cross” will be set in the future in a multiracial country divided into two nations, one of which is wealthy and one of which is impoverished. Son Ye Jin will be playing the role of Vera, a tough single mother who lives near the border in the impoverished nation. She will be starring opposite to Sam Worthington, who is well known for his role in “Avatar.”

If Son Ye Jin accepts the offer to star in “Cut by the Heart,” it will be her first historical drama since SBS’s “The Great Ambition” in 2002. Previously, Son Ye Jin also starred in the historical films “The Pirates” in 2014 and “The Last Princess” in 2016. With her performance in “The Last Princess,” Son Ye Jin swept many awards through the Grand Bell Awards, Blue Dragon Film Awards, Korean Film Producers Association Awards, Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, Film Award of the Year, and the Baeksang Arts Awards.

The same day, it was also reported that Kang Ha Neul was cast as On Dal the main character of ‘Cut by the Heart.’ Following the report, a source from TH Company stated, “Kang Ha Neul has received an offer to star in the new drama ‘Cut by the Heart’ and is reviewing it.”

On Dal is a character who lives in a hut in the woods with his mother. He has always been curious about the outside world, and even though he knows his mother will be angry, he makes his way to the market in the village. There he meets Princess Pyeonggang for the first time. One day, Princess Pyeonggang comes to his hut, stating that she will live with him, and she teaches him martial arts as well as how to read and write.

“Cut by the Heart” will be produced by Victory Contents, and it is reportedly helmed by producing director (PD) Yoon Sang Ho, who worked on SBS’s “Saimdang, Light’s Diary,” MBC’s “Different Dreams,” and TV Chosun’s “King Maker: The Change of Destiny.”

@Seriya The kind of raw and powerful acting you saw in TTB, YJ actually did show similar acting in Blood And Ties (BAT). Did you watch that movie? At that time, during many of her interviews regarding BAT,  YJ said that movie was the most difficult for her because there were many highly emotional scenes, far more than a normal dark thriller. YJ said she was completely drained after filming BAT.

There are so many memorable YJ shows that it is very difficult to choose. For me, AMTR will always have a special place in my heart since it is the very first YJ movie I watched many years back and I really cried buckets over it. 2nd will be MWGM because it is amazing how she is able to convince the audience not to hate her character in it (Jin Ah) with her brilliant acting. And I think she looks simple yet breathtaking without much makeup in all her scenes.

For dramas, my favourite is CLOY. She simply nails all her scenes and emotions, without overacting and boy, her comedic timing is flawless! Whenever YSR laughed, I laughed. Whenever YSR cried, I cried. Actually YJ's flair for comedy can also be seen in Personal Taste and The Art Of Seduction.

For great acting, I will choose Alone In Love (AIL) as my 2nd favourite YJ drama. The thing about YJ’s acting is that she’s fantastic when it comes to emotional scenes. She doesn’t need to shed tears, and we know she’s aching inside. Even when she is smiling, we can somehow feel the pain she is experiencing within. Sometimes the most subtle look or gesture has the power to generate the most emotional response from the audience. No words necessary. This is what differentiates a great actress from a normal actress.

@Jbelr  Yes, YJ often says that she chooses the scenario (script) first, then the character (whether it calls for YJ to act in the role or the role can be filled with any other actress), then the rest (Director, PD, salary, cast, etc) follows.

YJ aims to challenge herself with every role she accepts and I remember she said that if she feels confident that she can play the role 100%, she will not it take up. Because this means that it is not challenging enough for her. Only if she is 60-70% confident, she'll take up the role. The 30-40% difficulty is the challenge YJ gives herself in order to hone her acting skills and to grow as an actress.

So by repeatedly pushing herself out of her comfort zone and taking up a variety of roles, YJ strives to present a different appearance to her audience each and every time. YJ's transformation started in 2005 when she took up The Art Of Seduction. Next came AIL. The rest, as they say, is history.

At the tender age of 23, YJ is already striving to break free of her Nation's First Love image, and prove to her antis and critics that she is not just a pretty face. She said before that she is aware that beauty doesn't last, hence she will need to prove herself by improving her acting skills.

She has always been thoughtful and mature beyond her years. I am really proud to call myself a YJ stan and will continue to support this amazing woman in her acting journey.

PS: sorry for the long post!

Another article confirmed the Cut to the Heart script was sent to SYJ for her review, but "She's receiving a lot of screenplays for movies and dramas. It's just one project she's received an offer for."

She is at the height of popularity as shown by her numerous CFs.

I am a bit reserved on this type of news. Her agency is reacting to press reports coming from the project producers, who are seeking publicity for casting, gathering investors or network commitments. Nothing is final until her agency posts in writing that she will do the project.

For example, Cross movie maybe moving forward with securing a Korean movie location, but her agency did say contract details have not been worked out.

With most new productions put on hold or moved into 2021, there is plenty of time for SYJ to decide what is best for her and her career.

I’m doubtful about her taking on this historical drama because I read somewhere that she doesn’t like doing them, which explains why she hasn’t done any since her first one in 2002.

Since then the only quasi-historical project she has done is The Last Princess which takes place in 1925.  I read that she fasted for 24 hours the day before shooting a particular scene so she would look weak and sickly.  She was awesome throughout the movie and won best actress awards at Baeksang, Blue Dragon and Grand Bell.
