Lee Byung Hun is the most successful among Korean stars that have made forays into Hollywood

A translation of an article that appeared in Ming Pao Weekly.

Throughout recent history, Lee Byung Hun is the most successful Korean star to enter Hollywood.  In 2005, with his Korean movie, “A Bitter Sweet Life”, he took part in the Cannes Film Festival and unexpectedly won the opportunity to sign a contract with a Hollywood agent.  Entering Hollywood has not been easy.  When he shot “G.I. Joe: Retaliation”, he had to let go the “Sunbae” position gained in Korea and take the initiative to greet younger actors.  Despite getting a fairly small part in the movie, he worked very hard to shoot each of his scenes well.  In addition, he improved his English.  Therefore, naturally he got the opportunity to shoot the sequel. From 2009 until now, Lee Byung Hun shot a total of six Hollywood movies. In 2016 alone, he has two movies:  “Misconduct” and “The Magnificent Seven” 

Lee Byung Hun is the first Korean actor to be invited to present at the Annual Academy Awards.   This indicated that his foray into Hollywood was effective. Starting from 1998 when Park Joong-hoon, the first Korean actor to enter Hollywood, there were others who followed but mostly without success.  However, with the recent growing influence of Korean dramas and Kpop, will there be more and more “Lee Byung Hun” appearing?

Hollywood has always been an actor’s dream.   Prior to Lee Byung Hun, a number of Korean actors had already gone to this land of dreams.  The first was Park Joong-hoon in 1998 who starred in  the movie "American Dragons”. In 2002, he took part in the movie "The Truth About Charlie”.  Thereafter he only concentrated in making movies in Korea.  

Jun Ji-hyun and Rain have also acted in Hollywood movies.  Jun Ji-hyun's  “Blood: The Last Vampire” was not successful.  Thereafter, she returned to Korea and attained multiple career peaks.  Rain shot three Hollywood movies:  supporting roles in “Speed Racer” and "The Prince.”  and a lead role in ”Ninja Assassin”.     “Ninja Assassin” did not achieve good results at the box office.  When he was interviewed at the promotion of this movie, he said box office is secondary, the most important thing is for more people to know about Rain.

Mainly in Action Films

Most of  Korean actors who took part in shooting Hollywood movies have to pick up a knife or a gun,  in action films.   Once rumoured to enter Hollywood, Jung Woo Sung, had said this in distress:  “Hollywood is not my ultimate goal, in order to continue to act in mainstream Hollywood films, my acting is not good enough.  Furthermore, I need to have the skills of Jackie Chan and Jet Li.  This is perhaps the plight of many Korean actors:  in order to take part in Hollywood movies, they have to shoot action movies; they may have the desire but are not capable.   South Korean actor Jang Dong-gun is the one exception, there were romantic scenes in the movie "The Warrior's Way”.  Unfortunately, the movie did not do well in Hollywood.

Lee Joon-gi  to enter  into  Hollywood 

For the past five years, more and more  South Korean actors appeared in Hollywood movies:  Kim Soo Hyun (Claudia Kim ) in “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, Bae Doona in “Cloud Atlas” and “Jupiter Ascending”.  Lee Joon-qi who is shooting “Scarlet Heart: Ryeo” has earlier completed filming the movie, “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” and has officially entered Hollywood.  He revealed that he had learnt a lot from his co-star Milla Jovovich.  They discussed a lot and shared each other’s opinion. 

In addition, Go Ah-sung has signed a contract with an American company to act in Hollywood.  A few days ago , it was rumoured that Lee Jung-jae may participate in a Chinese American movie.  His management company responded that the matter is still under negotiation.

Before its premiere, movie ‘Master‘ had gained lots of attention from the viewers as the movie featured the top actors in Korea which are Gang Dong Won, Lee Byung Hun and Kim Woo Bin.

‘Master‘ tells the story of the intellectual crime investigation team and the company, Won Network. Won Network is involved in a serious fraud case and the crime investigation team goes after the company.

Gang Dong Won will play the role as Kim Jae Myung who is the charismatic leader of the crime investigation team. Lee Byung Hun will play the role as President Jin who is the president of Won Network and Kim Woo Bin will play the role as Park Jong Goon who is the smart Section Chief of Won Network.

‘Master‘ will start filming on April 23 and we are looking forward to this great movie.

Lee Byung Hun, Kang Dong Won, and Kim Woo Bin Begin Filming New Crime-Action Movie

Actors Lee Byung Hun, Kang Dong Won, Kim Woo Bin, Uhm Ji Won, Oh Dal Soo, and Jin Kyung will be starring in the upcoming film “Master,” which will start filming on April 23.

On April 22, CJ Entertainment revealed a few photos of the cast and crew of the film participating in a ritual before the day of the shoot to bring good luck and fortune.

“Master” is a crime-action film that deals with betrayal after betrayal as the police force tries to hunt down a skilled conman and the brains behind him.

In the film, Lee Byung Hun will be playing Jin Hwae Jang, a con artist who plans everything perfectly and gets away with crime thanks to his great persuasive skills and a flawless network supporting him.

Kang Dong Won will be playing Kim Jae Myung, the team leader of the police force in charge of the con artist case. His effective plans and investigation makes him go head-to-head with Lee Byung Hun in the police chase. This marks Kang Dong Won’s first time portraying a detective.

Kim Woo Bin will be acting as the highly intelligent mastermind who created the network and is the brains behind Jin Hwae Jang. Actress Jin Kyung will be the advertising executive of the network.

Lastly, Uhm Ji Won will be playing the role of a lieutenant in the police force and Oh Dal Soo will be an elite lawyer named Hwang Myung Joon.

Movie "Master" recently had a Korean traditional sacrificial ritual, 'gosa' to wish for a success of the production.

"Master" is "Cold Eyes" director Jo Eui-seok's next film project starring the powerful golden lineup, Lee Byung-hun, Kang Dong-won, Kim Woo-bin as well as Eom Ji-won, Oh Dal-soo, and Jin Kyeong. The filming begins on April 23rd.

"Master" is a crime action movie depicting the mind-boggling brain game between the intellectual crime unit and an unprecedented fraudster backed by the real brain behind the biggest fraud case in history.

Lee Byung-hun will play CEO Jin of One Network, who leads the enormous fraud case. Kang Dong-won will play Kim Jae-myeong, a commander of the intellectual crime unit. Kim Woo-bin has been cast for the role as General Park, who is the actual brain behind the fraud case led by CEO Jin. The first rendezvous of the three A-list actors is drawing explosive attention.

Jin Kyeong also joined the fantastic cast for her role as Mom Kim, a marketing director of One Network. DENZEL WASHINGTON, CHRIS PRATT, LEAD ALL-STAR CAST IN ‘MAGNIFICENT 7’ REBOOT

Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt are leading an all-star cast in the latest remake of The Magnificent Seven.

Entertainment Weekly announced that “Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt are saddling up” in a new remake of the already often-remade The Magnificent Seven. The movie will have an all-star cast, and fans are already excited.

The movie is being directed by Antoine Fuqua, famous for Training Day, The Replacement Killers, Tears of the Sun, King Arthur, Shooter, Brooklyn’s Finest, Olympus Has Fallen, and The Equalizer, as well as many music videos. Hollywood is often criticized for its lack of diversity, so many fans are looking forward to the remake of a classic western, as re-imagined by an African-American director, starring an African-American lead, one of South Korea’s most popular actors, a Mexican actor, and a Tlingit actor.

Denzel Washington will be portraying Sam Chisholm, leader of the seven men who come together to protect a town and accidentally become heroes, according to USA Today. His character is the equivalent of Yul Brynner’s Chris in the 1960 western, Lee Van Cleef’s Chris Adams in the 1972 sequel The Magnificent Seven Ride, and Michael Biehn’s Chris Larabee in the 1998 TV show. Denzel Washington is one of Hollywood’s most respected actors, known for John Q, Training Day, The Preacher’s Wife, Glory, Malcolm X, and St. Elsewhere.

Chris Pratt will be Josh Farraday. His character is roughly equivalent to Horst Buchholz’s Chico in the 1960 version, or possibly Anthony Starke’s Ezra Standish in the TV show. He’s described as a gambler with a fondness for explosives. Chris Pratt has starred in blockbuster movies Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World, as well as the television show Parks and Recreation.

Ethan Hawke will play sharpshooter Goodnight Robicheaux. His character may be closer to Brad Dexter’s Harry Luck from the previous movie or Eric Close’s Vin Tanner in the TV show. Ethan Hawke has been in White Fang, Gattaca, and Born to be Blue.

Vincent D’Onofrio will be Jack Horne, a trapper. His character will be roughly equivalent to Vin Tanner, who was played by Steve McQueen in the movie and Eric Tanner in the TV show. Vincent D’Onofrio has been in Men in Black, Jurassic World, Full Metal Jacket, Daredevil, and Law and Order: Criminal Intent.

Byung-hun Lee, who performs in his native South Korea as Lee Byung-hun, will be Billy Rocks, an assassin. His character is the counterpart of Britt, the knife man played by James Coburn in the movie. His character has no direct equivalent in the TV show. Byung-hun Lee starred in Masquerade, Joint Security Area, The Good, the Bad, the Weird, and Inside Men, which are the top 40 of the 100 highest grossing movies in South Korea. In the U.S., he has appeared in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and RED 2.

Martin Sensmeier will play Red Harvest, a Comanche warrior. In real life, Sensmeier is mostly Tlingit, with some Koyukon-Athabascan, Irish, and French heritage. His character is supposed to roughly be the equivalent to Charles Bronson’s Bernardo O’Reilly. Martin Sensmeier has been in Salem, Lilin’s Brood, and False Memory Syndrome.

Manuel Garcia-Rulfo plays the bandido Vasquez, a part roughly equal to Robert Vaughn’s Lee in the movie. In the USA, he’s been in From Dusk Till Dawn, Cake, and Bless Me, Ultima. In Mexico, he’s been in Alguien Más and 180º.

Peter Sarsgaard will be the villainous Bartholomew Bogue. Sarsgaard has been in such movies and TV shows as Dead Man Walking, The Center of the World, The Man in the Iron Mask, The Killing, and Shattered Glass.

Haley Bennett will portray Emma Cullen, the defiant, undefeated widow who hires the seven to defend her hometown. She has been in Hardcore Henry, The Equalizer, Passage, Kaboom, and Arcadia Last.

Other actors in the film will be Matt Bomer from White Collar, Sean Bridgers from Deadwood, and Luke Grimes from Fifty Shades of Grey.

The Magnificent Seven is no stranger to remakes and reboots. The 1960 western film was itself based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 Seven Samurai. The 1960 western had three sequels between 1966 and 1972. In 1977 and 1978 Marvel’s Star Wars comic book did an homage to The Magnificent Seven in issues 7-10, with Han Solo taking the role played by Yul Brynner and Denzel Washington in the movies. The 1980 science fiction film Battle Beyond the Stars was based on The Magnificent Seven, even having Robert Vaughn play almost the same character under a different name.

In addition to an all-star cast, led by Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, The Magnificent Seven will feature the final movie score composed by James Horner before his death. As reported in the Inquisitr, the new The Magnificent Seven, starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, will be released on September 23.

Actor-couple Lee Byung Hun and Lee Min Jung celebrated the birthday of their son, Lee Joon Hoo at a restaurant in Yeouido-dong. The belated one-year birthday for the couple's firstborn was held on the 24th in the company of close friends including actress Son Ye Jin, actor Song Seung Heon and martial arts director Jung Doo Hong.

Little Joon Hoo's birthday was on March 31 but because both his parents were tied up in filming schedules, the birthday was planned on a later date instead. It was a jubilant joyful atmosphere at the restaurant, Lee Byung Hun & Lee Min Jung were beaming with happiness celebrating their son's happy day. Byunghun carried & showed his son around while Minjung's smile never left her face.

Lee Byung Hun and Lee Min Jung Celebrate Son’s First Birthday With Star-Studded Party

Actor Lee Byung Hun and actress Lee Min Jung celebrated their son’s first birthday with a party on April 24. Close friends and acquaintances on both sides of the family were invited to the do, which took place in a restaurant in Yeouido.

It’s reported that Lee Byung Hun held his son while wearing a huge grin and Lee Min Jung’s smile never left her face.

The couple’s son, Jun Ho, was born last year on March 31 but due to the pair’s rigorous filming schedules they had no choice but to hold his first birthday party a little later. Lee Byung Hun was filming the movie “Single Rider” (working title) in Australia until April 19 while Lee Min Jung was shooting for the drama “Please Come Back, Mister” until very recently.

Famous comedian Jo Se Ho (pictured above) was the MC for the party, and attendees included Lee Min Jung’s label mate Son Ye Jin and Lee Byung Hun’s close friend, martial arts film director Jung Doo Hong.

Noh Hee Young, representative of the venue, “Sky Farm,” uploaded a picture of herself with Lee Min Jung and Son Ye Jin at the celebration onto Facebook with a caption reading: “Today’s leading lady meeting Son Ye Jin for the first time in a long time.”

@letzparty, you're too quick!  What a surprise treat from BHMJ!  Can't believe the luck seeing these pics of the couple and their son! Although the baby's face is blurred and we only see him from behind, this is indeed the super cool surprise. Our first sighting of JoonHoo and parents Byunghun & MInjung clearly adore their baby boy. 

After a year, this is worth the hope (to see their photos) and wait. We can obviously feel the happiness and proud moment of the couple of their son.

So happy.
