I'm curious if those who read the book, if LMH's Hansu, is the image of Hansu as described in the book.  Personally, except for LMH's looks, yes.  I would like to see more ruthlessness from Hansu in season 2; more of why Japanese would have feared/respected him.

The best TV series characters of 2022

spacer.png

It is the outsiders who have conquered the small screen and the lovers of seriality in the past year.

Among the memorable characters of recent TV series there are no immaculate heroes, no paladins of society, no unequivocally positive characters and no figure that we can classify as the exemplary citizen conforming to the limited decorum of the majority. They are all outsiders, bizarre, rebellious types , full of idiosyncrasies and "different" who visibly stand out from the crowd and yet have been able to seduce the mainstream public, i.e. those who actually despise, ghettoize or even bully them on a daily basis. With the exception of one, they are all unreleased figures from TV series that debuted on streaming platforms this year in new productions or “ returning ” shows. Here's who they are, in our opinion, the best characters of the tv series of 2022.

Koh Hansu, Pachinko

The gangster who in Lee Min-jin's bestselling novel seduced the adolescent Sunja - the descendant of a very poor family prostrated by the war - was a decidedly negative figure, a powerful and unscrupulous man who acted as a guardian angel to her and her family only because the latter had been able to give him a much desired son. Actor Lee Min-ho's thoughtful performance and Soo Hugh's shrewd script make him a tormented anti-hero, a survivor who maintains his own moral code and who has genuine affection for the young girl whose life he upended. The episode entirely dedicated to his past was named one of the best of the small screen by the New York Times .

The TV program of the year, #Pachinko's main character #LeeMinho, Pachinko, the story of a Korean immigrant family, was named in the top 10 TV programs of the year by the American Film Institute (AFI)! Fall in love with the charm of Lee Min-ho, who plays the role of 'Hansu' that you can't hate even if you want to hate him

who is @fassker and was he the one who wrote this paragraph or was it taken from the AFI web site?  I can't seem to find where it came from.

Thanks for sharing with us all the awards Pachinko was nominated for and some of the wins.  There is bias with the Emmy's and Golden Globes and LMH did not win any nominations himself.  His role is just too little except for Episode 7

Richard Roeper’s best TV of 2022

‘Pachinko,’ a deeply memorable depiction of several generations of a Korean family, tops the list.

1. ‘Pachinko’ (Apple TV+)

After one of the greatest opening credits sequences in television history, with the multi-generational cast dancing in a pachinko arcade to the sounds of the Grass Roots’ “Let’s Live For Today,” we get one of the best TV series in recent years — a masterfully spun, gorgeously photographed, beautifully acted and deeply memorable work following the journey of one Korean family across some 75 years. Based on the widely acclaimed novel by Min Jin Lee, “Pachinko” is a triumphant work with gleaming performances by the great Youn Yuh-Jung (Oscar winner for “Minari”), Lee Minho, Minha Kim, Soji Arai and Jin Ha. Very specific to one family and yet universally relatable, “Pachinko” is a breathtakingly original treasure.

Really is a shame Pachinko was left out of the big awards.  The news media likes Pachinko at least.

The Best TV Episodes of 2022

We watched a whole lot of television this year and have compiled a definitive ranking of the best of the best.

As 2022 draws to a close, it provides a bittersweet opportunity to take stock of some of the best episodes of television that we saw this year. In a streaming landscape where even the creators of the shows themselves don’t know if they will vanish without warning, this type of reflection feels different from any other.

While it is still very much about highlighting great work, it also serves as a farewell to many shows who have either been canceled too soon or may be the next to be sent into the unknowns of streaming limbo. One hopes that this will not be the case, but the act of appreciation is still all the more important as a way to hold on to what we do have while it is still here. Thus, here are the best TV episodes of 2022 that we were not just entertained by but often deeply moved by in small ways.

"Chapter Seven,” Pachinko

No list would be complete without a recognition of one of the most sublime shows of the year. While Pachinko, based on the outstanding novel of the same name by Min Jin Lee, was wrongfully snubbed by the Emmys, it will always hold a place in our hearts when we look back on this mess of a year. The episode simply entitled “Chapter Seven” is one of the reasons why, as it centered on the character of Hansu (Lee Min-ho) and brought his own harrowing brush with death into the forefront of the story. As directed by the visionary Kogonada, it was an absolutely shattering part of a season that was never lacking in such moments.

I love that a number of them singled out Episode 7, kudos to director and LMH for that episode.

Suddenly it is doing well?  It is about a year ago since it came out and Apple really did not promote it enough.  Didn't believe in their own product?

‘Pachinko’ Season 2 Filming Officially Delayed to February 2023 at Apple TV+

Along with the delay, there is also a shift in the filming locations as earlier it was set to shoot in Toronto and Japan, but now it will film in Toronto and Korea

The filming for the second season of the Apple TV+ Series, Pachinko, which is currently in pre-production has been officially delayed for three weeks. The reason behind the delay is not known, but one of the reasons could be the current weather condition as it is around -10°C at the filming location.

The production was scheduled to begin this Monday (January 9) in Mississauga, Toronto, ON, Canada, which has been delayed for three weeks. Now, Pachinko Season 2 will begin filming on February 1, 2023, and wrap on April 21, 2023. Earlier, the Toronto filming was scheduled to wrap on March 27. This is likely to cause a delay in the start of the second part of the shoot, which will now take place in Busan, Korea instead of Japan. The first season was filmed in Vancouver and Korea.

Earlier we revealed the second part of the shoot will begin immediately in Japan after filming is done in Toronto. Now the filming is likely to start by the end of April in Busan, South Korea to finish by the end of June 2023. Leanne Welham is attached to direct four episodes of the second season.

“Pachinko” depicts the hopes and dreams of a Korean immigrant family through four generations as they leave their nation in an indomitable struggle to live and thrive. Beginning in early 1900s South Korea, the story is recounted through the eyes of a heroic matriarch, Sunja, who succeeds despite all odds. The first season of Pachinko premiered on Apple TV+ on March 25 of this year and was renewed a month later for a second season.

The series stars Yuh-Jung Youn as older Sunja, Lee Minho as Hansu, Jin Ha as Solomon, Anna Sawai as Naomi, Minha Kim as teenage Sunja, Eunchae Jung as young Kyunghee, Junwoo Han as Yoseb, Inji Jeong as Yangjin, Jimmi Simpson as Tom Andrews, Kaho Minami as Etsuko, Steve Sanghyun Noh as Isak, Soji Arai as Mozasu, and Yuna as young Sunja.

“Pachinko” is written and executive produced by Soo Hugh, who created the series and serves as showrunner. Kogonada and Justin Chon are executive producers and directed four-four episodes of the first season. Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer executive produce for Media Res, the studio behind the series; Theresa Kang-Lowe executive produces for Blue Marble Pictures, and Richard Middleton also executive produces. David Kim and Sebastian Lee co-executive produce.

Korean-language works win Critics Choice Awards for 4 consecutive years

'Pachinko' named Best Foreign Language Series

spacer.png

Apple TV+'s original series "Pachinko" has become the Best Foreign Language Series at this year's Critics Choice Awards, making it the fourth time for a film or a series in the Korean language to win a prize at one of the acclaimed U.S. awards.

The series beat eight other nominees, including another Korean-language series "Extraordinary Attorney Woo," at the ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday (local time).

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Min Jin Lee, the epic saga tells the story of a Korean immigrant family across four generations from the perspective of Sunja (Kim Min-ha), the family's matriarch.

It starts early in the life of Sunja, who is born to a hard-working family in the southeastern port city of Busan during the 1910-45 Japanese occupation of Korea. After being forced to move abroad to Japan, she struggles to protect her family through devastation and tragedy while trying to find a sense of belonging in a foreign land. The later life of Sunja is played by veteran actress Youn Yuh-jung.

A large part of the series was filmed in the Korean language, with Japanese and English also being used.

"Pachinko," which was released last March, has garnered popularity with its well-made cinematography and its heart-wrenching, dynamic story of a family. Following the eight episodes, the production of the second season has been confirmed.

The series was named one of the best TV programs of the year by the American Film Institute (AFI) last month and has been scoring several wins at awards, including the Best Breakthrough Series for a Long Format (over 40 minutes) at last year's Gotham Independent Film Awards.

Founded in 1996, the Critics Choice Awards is presented by the Critics Choice Association to recognize the finest cinematic achievements. The win of "Pachinko" in this year's awards has again shown enhanced attention to Korea-related content or content made by Korean creators in recent years.

Spoiler

Bong Joon-ho and his "Parasite" won Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film in 2020; "Minari" and Alan Kim clinched the Best Foreign Language Film and Best Young Actor awards in 2021; and Netflix series "Squid Game" and Lee Jung-jae notched the Best Foreign Language Series and Best Actor in a Drama Series awards in 2022.

Although failing to win an award, "Extraordinary Attorney Woo" was also nominated for the Best Foreign Language Series category.

The Korean-language films and series that have won awards or been nominated at the Critics Choice Awards were all in different genres, from legal dramas and survival thrillers to the history of the Korean diaspora, showing that various sides of Korea-related content are recognized globally.

Director Park Chan-wook's Cannes-winning film "Decision to Leave" was also nominated for this year's award for Best Foreign Language Film, competing with Germany's "All Quiet on the Western Front," France's "Close" and India's "RRR," but failed to score a win. The trophy went to the Indian action film "RRR."

Pity LMH could not attend the the ceremony.  Many of them did.  At least the critics recognized the brilliance of the drama.

I checked AppleTV recently but Pachinko was not listed in the Most Popular dramas section.
