Pachinko Season 2 Will Break Your Heart All Over Again

Apple TV+'s sensational tearjerker will begin filming its latest installment in February.

If the Season One finale of Pachinko wrung you out like a sponge made of tears, you’re far from alone. Apple TV+’s multigenerational saga about a Korean immigrant family saw tragedy strike on multiple levels, with one terminally ill character succumbing to her illness and another hauled off to prison for suspected treason against the Japanese emperor. Many of our favorite characters were left in the lurch, leaving emotional fans to wonder: will Pachinko return for a second season? And now, with the series scooping up the trophy for Best Foreign Language Series at the Critics Choice Awards, read on for everything we know about the future of Apple TV+’s breakout hit.

Is Pachinko Renewed for Season Two?

Yes. In April, Apple TV+ announced that Pachinko will continue for a second season. “Words cannot express my joy in being able to continue telling the extraordinary story of this indomitable family,” said showrunner Soo Hugh. “I’m grateful to the amazing team at Apple and Media Res studio for believing and supporting this show and to our passionate fans who have cheered us on. It’s an honor to be able to continue working with this amazing cast and crew.” Hugh has said that the plan is for the series to run for four seasons, but so far, only Season Two is confirmed.

What Will Pachinko Season Two Be About?

Pachinko is adapted from the award-winning novel of the same title by Min Jin Lee. Given that Season One didn’t exhaust the material, there are many more stories to tell.

When we last saw Sunja, the matriarch of the family, she was standing on a street corner in Osaka circa 1938, selling her homemade kimchi to shoppers at the local market. According to Hugh, a “little bit of a time jump” will take us to World War II, where Sunja, now her family’s breadwinner, “will become stronger, even though there are so many burdens on her shoulders.” Fans of Lee’s novel know that Sunja will struggle to make money as ingredients grow scarce during the war, then decamp to the countryside with the help of Hansu, the wealthy father of her eldest son, Noa. “It’s about the story of her, continued from Season One… even heavier, but still, there’s joy,” Hugh teased. “Still, there’s joy.”

Executive producer Theresa Kang-Lowe teased how this setting will shape Season Two's tone, telling Deadline, "I think where we’re going in Season Two, the stakes get even bigger and it’s actually even more dramatic because what happens is you see with occupation how something is coming towards everyone in Korean-based families. What happens in Season Two is the scale grows and the stakes get even higher. I can’t tell you more than that, but I can tell you… we always say that Season One is epic. Season Two gets to an even greater place of epic-ness in scale."

Per Hugh, Season Two will also focus on Sunja’s sons, Noa and Mozasu. The boys appeared as children in Season One, though little about their childhood was explored. Speaking to Deadline, Hugh touched on the brothers, saying, “The brotherhood between Mozasu and Noa, I think because they’re so young in Season One, we don’t get a capture, but in Season Two, that brotherhood is just magical.” Book readers know that tragedy is in store for the brothers, as an adult Noa will one day take his life. In the show, we saw Mozasu and an elderly Sunja dance around this painful history, but never address it explicitly. If Season Two skips around in time like Season One, it could move into the brothers’ adulthood and explore this family tragedy.

Hugh also teased an expanded role for Kyunghee, Sunja’s sister-in-law, who becomes her best friend and partner in the kimchi business. “In season two, Kyunghee comes into her own as just her own person and her own being, and she’s just one of my favorite characters in this story, so I would love, love to see that,” Hugh said.

As for the present timeline, we last saw Sunja’s grandson Solomon striking a deal with Mamoru Yoshii, a seedy but powerful Japanese businessman with deep roots in the pachinko parlor business. Jin Ha, who plays Solomon, teases that his character’s Season Two arc will be about “moral conflict”—and “completely new,” rather than sourced from the novel. “I think we are seeing him question his preconceived notions of what success looked like when we meet him at the beginning of the season, and I’m rooting for him to find a healthier and less toxic idea of success,” Ha told Deadline. Hugh described Solomon's latest business decision as "a deal with the devil"—no doubt he'll pay the price in Season Two.

When is Pachinko Season Two Coming Out?

No premiere date has been set, but production is moving along. Pachinko is set to begin the first part of filming in Toronto on February 1, 2023, and wrap on April 21, 2023. The second part of the shoot, taking place in Busan, Korea, will begin in late April and conclude by the end of June 2023. Leanne Welham, known for her work on His Dark Materials and Conversations With Friends, will direct four episodes of the season.

What these dates mean for Season Two's release date isn't quite clear, but we're hoping for a late 2023 or early 2024 release. Watch this space for updates as we continue to learn more.

Award winning Apple TV+ drama shooting in Cambridge

The internationally acclaimed Apple TV+ drama, Pachinko, turns Cambridge heritage building into a WW2 Korean munitions factory

The interior of the Silknit Textile building in Hespeler is being used by a US production company to film scenes for the Apple TV+ series Pachinko this month.

An award winning dramatic television series that has drawn international acclaim is in Cambridge this week to shoot scenes for its second season.

Pachinko is filming at the old Dominion Woollens/Silknit textile factory on Queen Street, transforming the interior into a Second World War-era Korean munitions building.

"They are only using the interior of the building for their set," said Bryan Dykstra, partner for Blacks Point Developments. "The property is a great example of a turn of the 20th century industrial mill and was selected as few remain in Ontario."

Pachinko is based off of the New York Times bestselling book of the same name and is described as, "a sweeping saga that chronicles the hopes and dreams of a Korean immigrant family across four generations as they leave their homeland in an indomitable quest to survive and thrive," according to the Internet Movie Database.

"We were looking at reference material from 1940s Nagasaki and we felt the building fit perfectly for the layout and the geography for what we were going for," said Mureen O'Donnell, publicist for Sliding Pin Productions.

"Filming will go one for a few more days in the city."

The Korean drama starts in the early 1900s in Japanese occupied Korea and follows Kim Sunja, played by Oscar winning actress Youn Yuh-jung, as she recounts her life and her family's history escaping poverty in a war-torn region.

The show currently has a 97 per cent rating on popular tv and movie reviewing site Rotten Tomatoes.

O'Donnell said the City of Cambridge has been one of the most cooperative municipalities in helping to get the permits to set up for filming and has made a name for itself with bringing titles like The Handmaids Tale and The Queen's Gambit to life.

Season one of Pachinko is streaming exclusively on Apple TV+.

Here’s how Lee Min Ho is spending his time in Canada ahead of Pachinko 2 shoot

spacer.png

Reprising his role as Koh Hansu, Lee Min Ho is set to star in the upcoming season 2 of the popular novel-turned-drama.

Actor Lee Min Ho is currently in Toronto where he has travelled in order to film for the second season of the popular TV show ‘Pachinko’. The Hallyu heartthrob left on the morning of February 17 and has since kept his fans updated on his activities in the Canadian land.

The ‘The Heirs’ actor seemingly started off his probable long-time stay with a visit to the mart for some groceries and local produce. He shared photos from his mart run where he was carrying around a cart and seeking some beautiful flowers. Completely inconspicuous in his athleisure look with a mask covering his face. He proudly showed off his big purchase with countless bags in his next update. Looking super happy and tired at the same time, the actor plopped down on his lush sofa at what appears to be his new humble abode during his Canada stay.

Lee Min Ho’s next visit while in Toronto seemed to be to the sea as the actor shared pictures from his stroll under the cloudy skies. Appearing to be struck by the cold temperatures, Lee Min Ho looked adorable all buncled up with a puffer jacket, beanie and a pair of headphones covering his ears as he manouvred his way around the beach. The actor seems to be planning for a long stay in Canada and will likely return to South Korea only after completing all of his shooting schedule.

‘Pachinko’ season 2 is likely to finish filming in a few months and the viewers are expecting the new episodes to drop anytime in the next year, following the completion of post-production.

Spoiler

Ask the Stars

Meanwhile, Lee Min Ho recently wrapped up the filming for the upcoming big-budget K-drama, ‘Ask the Stars’ opposite Gong Hyo Jin. Playing the role of a space tourist, his love story with an astronaut on the same space vehicle as himself will be captured in the show. Lee Min Ho will embody Gong Ryong, an OB-GYN while Gong Hyo Jin plays Eve Kim. The K-drama has been catching the attention of fans around the world thanks to its star cast as well as the interesting storyline supported by a hefty budget and a lot of wire scenes.

Starting in South Korea in the early 1900s, the story is told through the eyes of a remarkable matriarch, Sunja, who triumphs against all odds. It juxtaposes her story with that of her grandson, Solomon, in the 1980s.
