[Seoul=Newsis] Reporter Jae-Woo Shin = Seems similar but different.  The pachinko novel, which was re-released after a change in publisher, still had a cover with a butterfly pattern, but if you look closely, the composition and expression have changed.  It's not just outside.  The old and revised editions contain the same content but completely different translations and phrases.

  Pachinko, which was created as an Apple TV+ drama and received a lot of attention, was pulled from production last April due to contract issues.  After that, it was transferred from the publishing house "History of Literature" to the publishing house "Influencer", and a revised edition was released.  The sale of the first volume began on the 27th.  The second volume will be released at the end of next month.

 

The new "Pachinko" has undergone a full rebroadcast.  I pointed out how much has changed.

from the first sentence of the novel.  A spokesman for Influencer Publishing House explained, "We tried to more accurately convey the meaning of the original text" and "It was a translation that tried to keep a fast style unique to the work."

 

Translator Shin Seung-mi, who is responsible for this translation, differs in that he uses simpler and more specific words to convey the meaning of the original text.

The brevity of the expression of the new translation is also highlighted.  The result was a completely different sentence, despite the fact that it had the same meaning, translating sentences from the old version of literary thought in different ways.  In addition, the dialect designations that recur throughout the novel are also different.  Major and minor dialect expressions were corrected in the old version, for example, the line saying that

"there's not much to sell" was changed to "I don't have enough rice to sell" .

 

In this revised version, the composition of the original book, which consists of three parts (Part 1 "Hometown", Part 2 "Home Country", Part 3 "Pachinko"), is also repeated to maintain the structure and original presentation.  conceived by Lee Ming Jin.  "Midwinter Guest", "Man of Destiny" for each chapter in the old version.

Due to different translations, the number of old and new editions of "Pachinko" also varies.  Unlike the old version, which consisted of 366 pages, the new version, which contains two letters from writer Lee Min-jin to Korean readers, has grown significantly to 386 pages.

On the other hand, according to the publisher, the author expressed satisfaction with the Korean translation of this revised edition.  Through the publishing house, the writer said, “Translating is the work of an angel of literature and an artist,” and expressed her gratitude to translator Shin Seung Mi.  Once the book was re-released, it went on pre-order at major online bookstores such as Yes24 and Aladdin and then climbed to the top of the weekly bestseller list.

 

Pachinko is a work depicting the life of an immigrant family from the Japanese colonial period to the 1980s.  Apple TV+ invested 100 billion won to create a drama of the same name, and it has become a hot topic for actors Yeo Jong Yoon, Min Ha Kim, and Lee Min Ho.

Meanwhile, to mark the re-release, writer Lee Min-jin will hold a lecture on the book in Seoul next month.  It will be held on August 10 at Sejong University Daeyang Hall with 2,000 seats.

I used to read a lot when I was young, then slowed down after school.  But thanks to Pachinko, I started reading again.  I guess one gets tired constantly reading when you're in school, and I read a lot for work, so reading for pleasure was set aside.
