Netflix's Korean drama "Crash Landing on You" continues to be on the Netflix TV program TOP10 (Japan) more than two years after its distribution began.

 

One day, South Korean chaebol daughter Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin), who was flying in the sky on a paraglider, was blown away by a sudden tornado and crash landed on the North Korean side. It's a unique love story in which she is rescued by North Korean elite soldier Li Jung-hyuk (Hyun Bin) while she is suspended in a tree, and her love grows.

 

In South Korea, it was broadcast on the cable channel tvN from December 19 to February 2008, and the final episode recorded a high audience rating of 21.7%. This was the third-largest achievement in Korean cable TV history. Furthermore, when it is delivered on Netflix, it is a big hit all over the world. In Japan, distribution started on February 23, 2008, and many viewers were addicted to it.

 

Why is such a drama still popular in Japan?

The keywords are exoticism, gender relationships, and real love.

 

▣ First of all, exoticism.  In fact, "Crash Landing on You" is inspired by the actual incident that occurred in September 2008. When Korean actress Jung Yang was on a pleasure boat off the coast of Incheon, she drifted for about two hours across the military demarcation line NLL (Northern Limit Line) set on the sea of the Korean Peninsula due to sudden changes in the weather. She was found and pursued by a North Korean armed security ship, but she was rescued by the South Korean Navy. Jung Yang is said to have had a conversation with a North Korean inhabitant living in the coastal area while she was drifting, but "Crash Landing on You" carefully depicts the real life of the North Korean inhabitants. In the village where Jung-hyuk lives, power outages often occur and he spends the night in candles. Women cook dishes with charcoal and wash them together or pickle kimchi. Much poorer than South Korea, but people are naive and caring. Such a landscape is full of exoticism and reminds us of the "good old days" that Japan once experienced.

 

▣ The second is the relationship between men and women. In the first half of the drama, Seri, who crash-landed in North Korea, is depicted as she overcomes the difficult situation with her own wit. However, her delicateness cannot be hidden. Jung-hyuk kneads flour and uses a manual noodle-making machine to make delicious noodles for her hungry auction. He also prepares grilled meat with his subordinates and serves it to the auction. Jung-hyuk goes to the market and buys Korean-made luxury cosmetics, aroma candles, and women's underwear for Seri. These scenes deny the idea of fixed gender role division, such as work for men and housework for women, and can be said to be a well-thought-out script. For women who are tired of Japanese dramas in which excessive care for men is depicted as common sense at work and at home, "Crash Landing on You" is just like an "oasis".

 

▣ The third is a longing for real love. Seri, a heroine who independently chooses her life and is financially independent, and John Hyuk, who does not show annoying "masculinity" at all.

 

The relationship between these two people is steadily increasing toward the final episode Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin became lovers in real life and held a wedding on March 31st this year. In the released two-shot photo, the groom is dressed in a black tie and the bride is dressed in a pure white wedding dress, full of happy aura. When the honeymoon to the United States and the two-shot at the airport after returning to Japan were reported, the happiness of the two became more and more familiar. Clocking in an over an hour per episode, it’s not easy to lose one’s self in the megahit Korean TV series “Crash Lsnding On You” because of its amazing scenes

Paragliding accident that led Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin) to Ri Jeong-hyeok (Hyun Bin). The pilot episode did not hold back as it showcased the breathtaking Korean mountainside and the visual effects of life-threatening fierce winds that knocked out Yoon Se-ri and brought her to North Korea and into Ri Jeong-hyeok’s life.

 

 

Innocent encounters in Switzerland. Remember those mini-flashbacks of how Se-ri and Jeong-hyeok had a series of innocent encounters and missed opportunities in Switzerland before the paragliding accident in North Korea happened? There were just too many cinematic moments: from Se-ri being pensive on the boat in the beautiful lake of Iseltwald, Se-ri chancing upon Jeong-hyeok playing the piano on the dock, to Jeong-hyeok seeing her on the panorama bridge in Sigriswil and asking her to take a photo with the Swiss Alps in the background.

A candle in the crowd. Se-ri frighteningly lost her way at a dark small-town market in North Korea when Jeong-hyeok, remembering her love of scented candles, showed up and held up a lighted candle in the crowd to serve as a guide for her. Thankfully, she saw it and they found each other. It was quite a poetic scene showing the unexpected bond between the pair.

Leap of faith with Se-ri. Frustrated that she couldn’t immediately go back to South Korea, Se-ri abruptly left Jeong-hyeok’s place to paraglide her way back but he saw her just in time to reason with her and promptly paraglided with her to make sure she’s safe. It was a breathtaking scene from the moment they saw the enemy’s trucks approaching and bravely deciding to leap from the mountain.

 

 

Bonding over bonfire. On their way to Pyongyang, Se-ri and Jeong-hyeok’s train broke down and were forced to camp outside. Viewers were treated on a panoramic view of the fields of Mongolia (cosplaying as North Korea) as the main couple romantically bonded over bonfire through the night.

Jeong-hyeok rescues Se-ri en route to airport. Straight out of an action movie, the show sent us on a rollercoaster ride when we all thought Se-ri can successfully fly out but then it turned out she was being tailed by the enemies and Jeong-hyeok had been riding a motorcycle to closely watch over her. It led to a jaw-dropping moment where Capt. Ri took the bullet in his attempt to protect Se-ri.

 

 

Jeong-hyeok and Jo Cheol-kang's (Oh Man-seok) Seoul fight scene.Apart from the romance aspect of the series, the thrilling action scenes also deserve a spotlight. The nail-biting confrontation scene and gunfight between Jeong-hyeok and Jo Cheol-kang gave us three defining moments: the threatening yet suave arrival of Jeong-hyeok’s North Korean military buddies on the scene, Se-ri getting shot by Cheol-kang and Capt. Ri in tears finally saying “I love you” to Se-ri.

 

Defying borders. There were two times that the star-crossed lovers defied the borders between North and South Korea: first was when Ri Jeong Hyeok sent off Se-ri to South Korea and bravely made a step across the border to give a goodbye kiss. Second was during the epic finale when Se-ri showed up just when Ri Jeong Hyeok was handed over to North Korean authorities at the Military Demarcation Line. Picture the collective gasp of the viewers when Ri Jeong Hyeok heartbreakingly broke away from the North Korean forces so he could face and meet the sobbing Se-ri halfway as both the North and South Koreans took out their guns. It was one of the emotional highlights of the series.

Gu Seong-joon (Kim Jung-hyun) sacrifices his life for Seo Dan (Seo Ji-hye). Just as the main couple of the series struggled, the secondary leads were dealing with their own drama and their share of action. In a major turn of events, Seong-joon opted to ditch his plans of flying out of North Korea and rescued the love of his life Seo Dan from the hands of armed goons. The series delivered a tearjerking scene when Seong-joon fought off the armed men and eventually died knowing that Dan loves him back and that someone will actually mourn his passing.

 

Reunited in Switzerland. If you can’t have a happy ending in neither North or South Korea, then why not have it in the place that started it all? Yoon Se-ri and Ri Jeong-hyeok celebrated their long-awaited reunion and happy ending in scenic Switzerland amid the majestic backdrop of the Swiss Alps and green fields as we all cried tears of joy on how beautiful everything is—the triumphant love, the twists and turns of the story, the romantic scenery and the high quality production of it all.

Lee Jang Woo, WJSN’s Yeonjung, Lee Kyu Hyung, Lee Yi Kyung, and more have been cast in the musical adaptation of “Crash Landing on You”!

 

Last March, it was confirmed that tvN’s hit drama “Crash Landing on You” would be remade into a musical by production companies Pop Music and T2N Media.

 

“Crash Landing on You” tells the story of a wealthy South Korean woman named Yoon Se Ri (Son Ye Jin), who is forced to make an emergency landing in North Korea during a paragliding trip. There, she meets Ri Jung Hyuk (Hyun Bin), an elite North Korean officer in the military. They’re intertwined with characters Seo Dan (Seo Ji Hye), the fiancée of Ri Jung Hyuk, and Goo Seung Jun (Kim Jung Hyun), a rich and ambitious businessman who was once set to marry Yoon Se Ri.

 

The musical role of Ri Jung Hyuk will be taken on by Lee Jang Woo, Lee Kyu Hyung, and Min Woo Hyuk. Opposite them in the role of Yoon Se Ri will be Im Hye Young, Kim Ryeo Won, and Na Ha Na.

 

The role of Goo Seung Jun will be played by Tei, Lee Yi Kyung, and Han Seung Yoon, with Yoon Eun Oh as the understudy. Seo Dan will be portrayed by Song Joo Hee, Kim Yi Hoo, and WJSN’s Yeonjung.
