Dundee
18 hours ago, violetpetal said: I'm glad people here love and appreciate KGE, I love KGE too. I only know her in this Goblin I didn't saw any of her work before, but right after Goblin ep 1 I fall in love with her. Her smile is so charming and adorable.. and most of all is her acting skill is superb. Sorry if this article below has been post before, yesterday i just read an article posted sometimes ago early 2016, that Gong Yoo also found her charming and wanted to work with her. Actor Gong Yoo recently had an interview with TV Daily to promote his new movie 'A Man and a Woman.' During the interview, he was then asked which actress he wanted to work with in the future, and he said, "There are a lot of charming people. Kim Go Eun is charming. Maybe I'm getting old, but it makes me happy when I see the people make their first appearances at Chungmuro [film festival] and take center stage. It makes me fell good. I enjoyed Kim Go Eun's 'Chinatown.'" http://www.allkpop.com/article/2016/02/gong-yoo-wants-to-act-with-kim-go-eun I've watched Coin locker girl (i think it was chinatown alternative title) the boss lady and KGE as her adopted daughter were awesome

Popular Post NRGchick
@packmule3 Phew! I read your thesis about beauty and character and I love it! Permit me to respond. Kim Go Eun is definitely no classic beauty like Song Hye Gyo but I think she has infinite beauty. This allows her to be the role which is asked of her. Be it a tough boyish gangster in Chinatown/Coin Locker Girl, a rebellious martial arts practicing hoyden with a birth secret in Memories of the Sword or the dim witted girl who takes revenge against her sister's murderer in Monster, she is able to portray these characters perfectly. Her eyes are emotive (even with her monolids) and when she smiles or cries, unconsciously you would smile or cry along with her. [That's the end of my treatise to Kim Go Eun and back to Goblin!] I agree with you that the word 'pretty' is more than the basic meaning. I have taken the liberty of highlighting what you have said in red. Hope that's ok! "Anyway, that's one level of understanding beauty. Inside beauty, intelligence, character, and so on. And there's another level of understanding Beauty in the story that upends this view. It relates to Shin's and ET's emotional development." Spot on! Sometimes I think the writer is also taking the mickey out of all those who were already disparaging the casting decision to have KGE as the lead actress because she was not 'pretty' enough. So now 'pretty' runs as part of the central theme. >Shin says it’s not his concern and she gets angry at that and accuses him of lying because she’s not pretty enough to be his bride. But he says readily, “You’re pretty. I’ve lived over nine hundred years. I’m not looking for someone who’s pretty; I’m looking for someone to discover something about me.” To me, it sounds like he has all the 900 odd years and he knows that there is more to a person's character than merely the appearance. So even if Eun Tak is insecure over her looks, he knows how she is like beyond appearances. He needs her (as you mentioned about her usefulness to him - bear in mind that he does not have any tender feelings towards her at this stage.] Yet, I think he needs her for more than her ability to pull out that sword - but he needs her to show him how to live and love. He was not 'living' in the 900+ years of his existence. He was surviving. Episode 4: (Shin is drunk and they are taking a stroll together.) >She asks what happens to him if she decides not to be his bride, and Shin says he won’t be able to pull the sword out, because only she can do that. “I have to pull the sword out in order to…” he can’t say the truth, so he ends with, “To be pretty!” He says the word that he knows Eun Tak is hung up on. I mean, she knows that is not what's going to happen. [She joked about him turning into a broom] but it would never have crossed her mind that it would mean death for Dokkaebi. [You also reminded me about the scene in Quebec at the crosswalk - how beautifully shot, how beautifully written and how beautifully was the poem read by Gong Yoo aka Dokkaebi. You could see the realisation dawn on his face when he realises he had fallen in love for the first time and Eun Tak being oblivious to everything. Gong Yoo - Jjang!] >Eun-tak says that she’s been thinking she’ll defer “making him pretty” (i.e., pulling the sword), because once she does, it’ll take away her usefulness, and he might kick her out. He whines about her eating all those snacks, and she calls him out on his pettiness, saying he could have just given her that 5 million won and be done with it. By now I feel that word 'pretty' is special to the both of them because no one else will know what this 'pretty' actually means. It's a shared tease. >Eun-tak turns to greet her lunch partner, an unseen CEO, seemingly not seeing Shin sitting in front of her. “At 29, you’re still bright,” Shin says, looking at her with sad eyes. “But I am not there next to you. My life’s immortality has come to an end. After my death, you and your life after my disappearance have forgotten me and come to perfect completion. I must disappear. For the sake of you, who smiles prettily. The choice I must make is ending this life.” This was one of the most touching scene ever! The look of devastation on Dokkaebi's face when he realised (or doesn't see himself there in the future) that Eun Tak is meeting this mysterious CEO. So it must mean that he has turned to dust and Grim managed to wipe her memory (Although I would think that Grim would be unable to do this since he can't access Eun Tak's mind (remember the scene where they were having the cold drinks at Dal.komm after Dokkaebi treated Eun Tak to a BBQ meal?). Actually, if she seems to have lost her memory of Dokkaebi, I would be more inclined to believe that there was a reset - whereby all memories of Dokkaebi's existence would have disappeared for all who are connected to him, not just Eun Tak. Episode 8: (We see his reluctance to tell her that she’s pretty and allows her to think that his first love is somebody else. Why? Partly, because it derives pleasure from seeing her jealous reactions, and partly I guess, because he’s reticent to openly discuss feelings with her. In the past, he said he didn't care about her appearance but now, she’s so beautiful to him and it pains him to death that he cannot be with her ever because of his punishment.) At this stage, we do know how Dokkaebi feels about his bride (Eun Tak is discovering she has some sort of feelings for her ajusshi) and who doesn't love to tease a person who seems to be ignorant of the actual feelings felt towards her?) That word 'pretty' also now feels like a burden. >He tells her that she doesn’t know what’s paining him, and when she asks what it is, he replies, “First love hurts a lot.” Thinking he means someone from his past, Eun-tak gets pettish, saying she must have been really pretty. Shin says, “Very much… every day… it hurts.” Annoyed, Eun-tak tells him to rest up, patting his arm extra hard, telling him that’s not something you say to your bride. “If you look hard, you can see where she’s pretty,” Shin says. “So don’t go.” I think I did a gif set of this scene and had to smile at how Eun Tak did not get that the first love was her. Now the tease is shared with the audience. Dokkaebi has acknowledged his first love is 'pretty' [And it was funny to read how some people thought that the first love referred to the Queen - before the big reveal that she was his sister - therein lies the crunch - some viewers still hung up on the traditional, dictionary meaning of 'pretty'] >Back to her cheery self, Eun-tak confesses that she can’t see his sword anymore, so there’s no chance she’ll be able to pull it out for him. Aw, is she lying? Shin pats her head affectionately, and she smiles in turn. Here, there is mutual understanding about the love they have for each other. [the epic rescue - 'saranghae' and his response 'na-do'] She is implicitly telling him that she will not pull out the sword, no matter what (since she can't 'see' it) . This is the point where Dokkaebi will make up his mind to find other 'doors' to which he may appeal to the deities and change their fate. >Once they’re outside, Eun-tak explains that her ghost friend Jung-hyun (her library friend who died in a car accident) asked her to come visit her with flowers. She then changes the subject to him, saying that flowers, any kind really, look good on him. “You’re totally my type,” she continues. “Anytime. You have a great personality. Most certainly.” Shin is perplexed by the sudden shower of compliments and asks if he did something wrong. He didn’t and neither did she, and Eun-tak says these are words of consolation and encouragement. He asks how he’s her type specifically, and she replies, “You’re strange and beautiful.” He beams. Since this conversation occurred after she heard his life's story - she has a better understanding about her Dokkaebi. That he is beautifully strange inside and out. She is accepting him wholeheartedly and without judgement. [Though I dread to see her reaction when she finds out about the either/or clause regarding her life and death as told by Samshin halmoni - she would be upset with him not telling her the facts] There’s still NOTHING wrong with emphasizing CHARACTER > PRETTINESS. But when you love somebody, often variables change and the beauty of the beloved to the lover may simply encompass everything else. Thus, in a strange but profound way, PRETTINESS > CHARACTER. [Nothing more I can add to this] I love how we could see Dokkaebi gradually falling in love with this missing soul, this spitfire of a girl who he may have saved as a fetus in her mother's womb but who had carved out a life for herself. She lived with the evilest aunt I have ever seen, her two useless cousins, her teacher who is biased and lacking friends in school (since many of them were afraid of her ability to see ghosts - what more being bullied by the girls in her class.) It's as if Dokkaebi himself may have given Eun Tak the sandwich (not subway!) and let Eun Tak (through free will) decide on her own path. Sorry - I tend to be more Dokkaebi/Sinbu centric ...

frankreich
I'm back! I hope to discuss more with you all from now on. I was on a holiday vacation abroad and finally got to experience winter. The ski resort and cable car scenes in ep 9 reminded me of my travel and how extremely cold it was up in a snowy mountain! The cast and crew are working so hard! @NRGchick@packmule3 and others (since I spent the last 2 hours backreading I couldn't note down all of you hehe)... Thank you for all your insightful comments on KGE as well as KS and ET's relationship. I can't express myself well so kudos to all of you who took all my thoughts into writing! I tend to like relationships that are rooted and get to develop based on a deeper connection. I've never seen a couple like KS and ET in a drama before and I really think it's a breath of fresh air to see them interact. The slow burn is perfect for their relationship. Their love is so pure and innocent and tender and heartwarming (I could list all adjectives I could think of but it'll get annoying haha). The sadness that wraps around their fates yet they still manage to be so cute with each other is what makes everything so heartfelt. The feeling of falling in love for the first time and that constant foreboding... and them finally taking action in changing their destinies. From what we've been hinted at so far, I do think we will get a happy ending. "Love will prevail" and it's nice to see KS begin to hope and change the course of his life because of love. As I've pointed out before, I think this will be one of the final scenes: I think it's cool that they've already filmed all the Canada scenes. We might get to see more 29yo ET.

kiranzz
Our Dokkaebi is single for more than 900 years, because he's too afraid of being attached with many people. More he has people by his side, the sadder he will be because they will be gone one by one . But from Episode 1, the umbrella scene, we know that KS can see his shadow on ET when they were passing each other. So, why he notices of ET presence that anyone else in his life. I'm curious yet sad in every episode, 6 episodes left guyyyssssssssssss

Popular Post selenette
REVISED! THE CHARACTERS AND THEIR HANJA NAME MEANINGS "Your real name is Kim Sun? Which Hanja character do you use?" - Kim Shin, to Sunny [Ep 9] I've revised my previous post (removing wrong Hanja characters) and moved it here. Thank you, @kumoiwa for the insightful inputs, the screenshots, and @hushhh for reminding me that I placed my pictures wrongly in my old post. Thank you to any of you who read the old post and this one. KIM SHIN Chairman Yoo explained to Secretary Kim that Kim Shin's name means "to believe" [Ep 9]. This helps establishing the Hanja character for Kim Shin's given name, which is 信. However, based on Eun-tak's Internet search results [Ep 5], the Hanja for shin in Kim Shin's name is 侁, not 信 . The screenshot of her search is in the spoiler box. Spoiler Cr: kumoiwa I believe this is an error on the production team's part, because 侁 means "large masses", which contradicts Chairman Yoo's abovementioned statement. Out of 25 Hanja characters formally listed by the Korean government for the given name Shin, only 信 means "to believe". 金 (kim) = gold; iron (Note: generally, the character refers to any precious metal of the ancient Chinese era) 信 (shin) = to believe, belief, trust, to profess faith in (Note: the character consists of two characters, 人("man") and 言("speech") = a person's truthful words. The character implies that a man with this name is one who stays true to his promises) TO [STRONGLY] BELIEVE; A STAUNCH BELIEF; STEADFASTNESS ________________________________ WANG YEO As this was one of two names that Kim Shin wrote down [Ep 8], there would be no mistaking the Hanja. Nevertheless, the "dawn" meaning is a new discovery for me. 王 (wang) = king (Note: the three horizontal strokes are Heaven, Man and Earth. The vertical stroke is the king. A king, therefore, has to connect Heaven, Man, and Earth. This implies that a king's failure in maintaining this sacred connection/carrying out the mandate to rule justly, will result in Heavenly punishment) 黎 (yeo) = dark; black; dawn; many people; commoners THE DARK KING; THE BLACK KING; THE KING OF MANY PEOPLE; THE KING [WHO CAME AT?] DAWN ________________________________ KIM SUN Written side by side with Wang Yeo's name [Ep 8], this name's Hanja characters were clearly shown in the drama. 金 (kim)= gold; iron 善 (sun) = virtuous; good; kind; charitable;kindness (Note: the character is formed by two other characters, 誩 ("say a lot") and 羊 ("goat" [= sacrifice, soft speech], implying that the person always speaks in kindness and is selfless/self-sacrificing) GOLDEN VIRTUE; GOLDEN KINDNESS; TRUE/GOLDEN SELFLESSNESS _________________________________ YOO DEOK HWA His surname's Hanja character is written on his ancestors' gravestones [Ep 1]. The screenshot is in the spoiler box. His given name is that of Andy Lau 's [Ep 5]. Spoiler Cr: kumoiwa 柳 (yoo) = old Chinese surname "Liu"; willow; a constellation 德 (deok) = morality; ethics; virtue 華 (hwa) = illustrious; magnificent; flowery; to flourish; to prosper (Note: the character consists of elements 艹 ( "grass") + 匚 ("basket", "sieve"), which referred to a container for herbs, plants, leaves for traditional medicines. In ancient times, one travels to the countryside. Naming a person in this character implies a hope for a distant yet encompassing journey.) ILLUSTRIOUS VIRTUE; MAGNIFICENT MORALITY; TO [EMBARK ON A] JOURNEY ON [THE PATH OF/TO] VIRTUE ________________________________ JI EUN TAK Based on Eun-tak's death card [Ep 3], these are the Hanja characters for her name. Please click the spoiler box to see the screenshot. Spoiler 池 (ji) = a Chinese surname "Chi", pool; pond; ditch 恩 (eun) =favor; grace; love; kindness (Note: the character is formed from the character 心 ("heart") and phonetic 因 ("to follow"; "cause"), implying that the person is kind-hearted) 倬 (tak) = bright; beautiful; high and large BEAUTIFUL GRACE; BEAUTIFUL KINDNESS; BEAUTIFUL AND GRACEFUL; KIND AND BEAUTIFUL ________________________________ Revised: My observations on the Names (please only click if you're interested) Spoiler 1. It makes me sad that Kim Shin's name really signifies his loyalty to both his sister and his king, the two people he failed to protect. But it makes me happy that he is, at the core, a man who is willing to protect his beliefs. 2. The realization that there is an element of sacrifice (neck and neck with kindness) within Kim Sun's name makes me sad, too. 3. Wang Yeo's given name wasn't chosen out of spite (a name that means dark). His family loved him, after all. He was named "dawn" because his parents hoped that he would bring their country out of the dark. 4. When Shin named Deok-hwa, he didn't do it to embarrass the boy. He truly cares for the boy and hopes for the latter's well-being. 5. Eun-tak was really cherished and loved by her late mother. Please stay alive, you kind and beautiful girl. Your mom prayed that you would bring love and grace for everyone. ______________________________ Sources Reveal hidden contents https://chinese.yabla.com/chinese-english-pinyin-dictionary.php http://www.chinese-tools.com/tools/calligraphy.html http://www.chineseetymology.org/CharacterEtymology.aspx?characterInput=恩 http://dictionary.pinpinchinese.com/definitions/ http://www.koreanwikiproject.com/wiki/ http://www.hanja.me/explore.html http://www.chinesetools.eu/chinese-dictionary/index.php?q=%26%2321331%3B http://hanja.naver.com/ https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Lau http://justlearnchinese.com/chinese-radical-show-basket-radical-37/ https://eastwindgallery.blogspot.co.id/2016/04/hua-lian-splendid-affection-7-nameplate.html?m=1 Edited January 3, 2017 by selenette Corrections and screenshots (thanks @kumoiwa)
