So much anger and bitterness in *ahem* another thread. Haha, why is that so funny to me?

 

Come on, Taek bowed out in defeat, and then cried, and then drugged himself into slumber. This clears the way for JH. Shouldn’t JH-fans be jumping with joy?

 

Hee hee, I'm being naughty. Anyway, there's no need to put any side down. I want JH to be happy just the same way that I want Taek to be happy. It’s not so much that I am shipping Taek-DS so much as I am simply predicting it.

Now that I've watched R88, this just makes me kind of almost hate R94. (Sorry R94 fans.) Before watching R88, my opinion of R94 was mildly positive to indifferent. But for whatever reason, the more I love R88, the more I conversely dislike R94.

 

In general, I think R94 has a lot of fun moments and charming performances. And I love the general premise - immersing yourself in the culture of that time. Even just watching the cell phones evolve is fun. But the more I see of R88, the more I realize that R94 is incredibly sucky in comparison. And I’m sorry this is kind of off-topic, but if you will allow me to get it off my chest...

 

- I guess my first complaint is that Na-Jung is kind of a shrill brat. Maybe it's all her shrieking at her dad and tussling with Trash Oppa. I don't know. She's just not as endearing and lovable as Deok-Sun. She’s like Bora, but without the depth and maturity.

 

- The reason that Trash Oppa took FOREVER to respond to NJ's love confession, or broke up with her later for absolutely no reason. It was just exhausting to watch, and made me just not care about this relationship after a while.

 

- The very existence of Chil-Bong, the perfect-on-paper boy who seemed to have no human reaction except to love NJ blindly, and existed solely to trick the audience. I never shipped CB because he was not really a person.

 

I think that’s the ultimate reason for the Chil-Bong outrage - it’s not so much that the audience needed him to become NJ’s husband. It’s that they felt manipulated and not respected.

 

And one thing I appreciate about R88 is that both Taek and JH (and everyone else!) feel like fully realized characters, and we care about them, and want them to be happy. I mean, I am feeling thrilled for Jung-Bong and Mi-Ok, and laughing and crying at their love travails.

 

But I never cared about Binggrae (R88) or even Haitai in the same way, not even close. They were certainly amusing sideshows, but that was it.

 

I did enjoy Samchunpo and YunJin, but honestly, that is the only fond memory I can recall about R94.

 

- The very boring last 1/3 of the series, where the OTP broke up for no real reason except, again, to trick the audience that CB had a chance.

 

- The writing just seemed kind of sloppy overall. Like, the parents had a baby! Wow!

 

And it must have been the quietest baby in the world who never needed anything like food or attention. I found this incredibly weird because this family had endured a tragedy - NJ’s brother dying as a child - and that was why they were so close to Trash, who was his best friend and filled this huge hole in their lives. So you would think that a new baby in their lives a significant event. But you never see NJ or Trash ever interacting with the baby in any significant way.

 

Think about how a similar storyline would have been handled in R88. R88 has its share of past tragedies, and they handle it in such a touching, human way.

 

- Oh, and I recall that NJ had a debilitating back problem that was seriously affecting her ability to live a normal life. But then you never hear about it again, except that one other time.

 

Ultimately, you want to end the series feeling happy for the OTP, and I rooted for them. But in the end, I was just exhausted. As a couple, they feel rather … smug? You know, like other people only exist to serve their interests? Like, I thought it was a weird detail that they were renting their house from Chil-Bong at a huge discount, with NJ demanding that he better not raise the rent (even though his wife is complaining about it). Like, use him until the very end?

 

Okay, sorry, that was kind of a random rant. But I guess I was just thinking about how everyone’s always bringing up Chil-Bong. (Taek is the new Chil-Bong!, No, it’s Jung-Hwan!) In my opinion, no one is the new Chil-Bong, because I feel like this time, all the characters are cherished, and the writers are not disrespecting the audience.

I wouldnt bank too much on getting flashback on scenes...i remember in 1994 CB shippers kept thinking that there would be flashbacks and they never came. They purposely cut scenes or show them in  a way sometimes and very rare do they go back to flesh it out

Chingus, do you know what I want to see? I want to see a flashback on DS and how she responded to the news of TK's airplane going down. I think this would be a really important scene and maybe that's why it was not shown on purpose. Or maybe I'm just delusional haha.

I think they are to focusing on JH without giving any attention to the story itself..

I often go around the 4r, especially the main thread and JH-DS thread, too. I think they are a little negative (and sometimes extreme, maybe?). Well, I know they have rights to think and say whatever they want. However, it would be such a waste if they don't enjoy another parts and aspects of AM1988. It's a great show, though.

To me, I'd only gone mad because there was no preview for ep17. Even my ship won't end game, it's okay. There are no complain because the show itself entertains me. Sung parents,  Kim parents, TK's dad and SW's mom couple, homeroom teachers, DR's mom, SW-BR, JB-MO; all of them have been building an amazing complete panorama totally. I really can't sympathize with people blaming the writer and the PD. Why? For putting so much enthusiasm for this work? Wanna have a greater show? Go and create another happy ending rom-com JH-DS themselves!!

By the way, since you all started mentioning your most favorite TK-DS scenes, I've been planning on drawing the sweet scenes between them for quite awhile too. So, I wonder if that's okay to post my fanarts here? It's nothing much though. Just a simple illustration ^^;; haha. So, it's like I'm listing my favorite scenes (not in a particular order) with drawings instead of words. And I'll probably draw more than three scenes 'tho if that's okay ^^;

For this part

Omg, he really paid lots of effort on this movie date. Even DR doesn't believe he can do it. I think TK actually knows the place. The gang just simply doesn't expect that from him.

Again, I'm touched by how much DS cares for TK here. She understands that he needs to rest and she knows it doesn't matter if he wins or loses (she repeats this idea in the conversation with DR on the bus later on) TK is really honest with her. And, what really strikes me here is how calm DS is. It's like she is so used to having him on her side and spending time together. I guess they have lots of off-screen interactions and hence, their bond is actually much deeper than we think. On the other hand, it's nice when DS tells TK that she needs to study and has no time for him. It's not a direct rejection as DR worries about but here we can see that DS concerns for both TK and herself. This is like BR-SW issue on a smaller scale. And, our witty TK's reply to DS just cracks me up. The idea of having quality time with loved ones is so evident here. It's like their earlier movie date. TK just slept throughout the whole thing, but it was heartwarming that DS accompanied him and be his source of comfort. Lastly, DS's response justifies that SW is right. Earlier, SW told DR that he believed DS would get TK's idea. And DS understands TK here

I think the next 2 episodes will see Taek withdrawing from DS. And she has assumed for the longest time that Taek with be around forever, I wonder how she will react? Will she realise that he is THE special one all along? 

Also, I think the TV interview that Taek did not want to do (but did anyway) may be an important plot device to show DS that she was so special to Taek. If not, why did they emphasize that the reporters were asking him questions unrelated to baduk (ie. His personal life)? 

So excited abt how the story will unfold for Taek....I think I'm going to rewatch the series to stay sane!

Lemme share my thoughts after watch ep16 again...

1. Look at how Taek take care of sick DS, without just simply asking, he do the action,give her the medicine, and DS turn her head when she burp is just.... what are you doing Deoksunie?! ㅋㅋㅋ [PS: DR looks so cute and younger without his glasses]

2. I'm laughing so hard at the ahjummas when they going to singing contest, so nervous and end up too drunk when its finally they turn lol. And the ponytail too. Aigoo~ ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

3. When you thought that JB oppa and MO couldnt be any more cuter and sweet together. And JB oppa (again) freaking out with MO's dad voice in the phone *goat sound*. Pls dont cut they're scene in the next eps PD-nim. They look so good together.

4. Yeay... at JH took the blue paper to make airplane. He's the blue one. So much hint even the BLUE lagoon birthday gift. I dont think the writer going too far to make JH-DS to be like Blue lagoon story, esp going to island etc. It's just... doesnt see it coming.

5. When Bora brush her teeth after breakfast and just sitting there, sighing, hearing her family talking. I think its bcoz she'll think she couldnt hear her noisy family talking again when she moved. She'll miss it. Aigoo.... Bora~ *hug*

6. When DS asking her friend about their dreams. Is she wondering her dream too? What she wanna be in the future?

7. Smart JB put the cassete tape in the freezer for 10 minutes (?) so the sound can be more clearer (?) like a new cassete. Ohhh.... uri JB oppa who knows many things!! Plus he making soooo many that paper crane (what is it called again? I forgot its name). I remember I used to make it before when I'm first going into kpop and kdrama,

8. DS nagging at the boys when she saw them out from Taek's house. Is she thinks they watching yadong (porn) movie again? And is it just me or is she intentionally brought something (FISH FISH FISH ) to Taek so just she can go talk to Taek and remind him not to forget to call her after the match?! Uhh... Song Deoksun, soo smooth.... you're really anticipating it dont ya?

9. Touching moment convo between taek and papa Bear. When his dad said he want to be "Joheun chingu / Good friend " with Sunwoo's mom and he won't do it if Taek doesn't like it.He hate it if its make Taek uncomfortable (Not fully understand Korean,but that's what I get).
You do realize Taek's changing gaze from not understand what his dad trying to say to understanding gaze (when his dad mention joheun chingu with Sunwoo's eomma). He look at his dad with understanding gaze plus little smile of understanding. When his dad said he want to tell him first and asking for permission (?) and Papa bear won't do it if taek hate it.
And when its finally his turn to speak, notice that almost-break voice when he said, Appa, It's your life. He just want him to be happy. If his daddy is happy, then he likes it.
It's just another prove that Taek is more mature than kids on his age. When SW took really long journey to finally "accepted" Taek's appa (which is normal for his age). Taek's words "I just want you (his dad) to be happy" is the same when SW (imagining) talking with his dad about this matter and his dad said "I just want your mom to be happy".

10. Taek playing the game and beat JB oppa.ahhahah.... serious expression Choi taek... and his manly hand.... >.<

11. Look at DS waiting for the phone. And her dissapointment look when Taek canceled the plane. What is she mumbling about when she climb the stair after talking to SW JH DR?? Girl girl girl.... you clearly not being sunny DS huh, Gloomy DS now.... girl please...

12. Ra Min Ran just really cracking me up. She dancing to the 'egg music'. Still persistent to dance and singing eventho there is no music, and even when DR and SW's mom drag her. LOL. I knew it. I knew it, they brought the egg sound cassete tape to the contest when that egg seller ahjussi taking the wrong tape.Its really hilarious. She and Kim sajang really just match made in the heaven ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

13. Aigoo~ poor DR, that contestant nomor 91 just beat him hardly. Gwaenchana DR-ah, at least we know you can sing know ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

14. I know Noeul can sing (remember that eps when he and DS watching TV and do that hand and neck dancing thingy,he singing along the song, that's when I know he has good voice), just surprised me when he join that contest since he's shy kid (JB'appa said).

And I just watched the BTS scene. The one when DR DS consultant thing happen. lol. HR said scene with Taek is hard bcoz she always the one who do so much talking, while with DR its so fun. LOL guys.... what if its a hint? A hint from Hyeri that DS is going to choose the one she has most fun with, and its DR.... *goat sound*

I admitted i was so stupid believing such rumors on DC about how Reply 1988. The writer is clearly JH-DS pro and acted as if he knew how the script will be written and I bought their cheap trick. *sigh* As my sanity comes back, . i don’t think the writer finish writing her script for the last episode (but i believe they have finished all with the witty story).

I just watched ep 15 and 16, I watched the show whole-heartedly with open mind. And Yes... I love the show sooooo much... each episode is so goooooood. I really enjoyed the show. I am happy with the baby step of Love triangle among DS-Taek- JH.

Episode 15 really highlighted how beautiful Taek’s personality. His appa and himself came out as supermen of Ssamunddong, indeed. Beautiful moment of DR and his mom.. yes, i’m laughing of content watching happy Do Ryong.

Episode 16: I’m really on the roller coaster watching this this episode.. laughing, happy, swooning and even crying for Taek.

However, I really expected that Taek will hold his confession to DS. I’m happy because, eventhough he confessed he just will add another conflict for DS. As I want for DS falling in love with Taek so much without knowing Taek has fallen for her before she knows herself. I want her to know her trully heart without any interuption. So the progress is good.

I’m happy watching ep 16 and put extra attention for DS’s reaction towards Taek. I saw happy results:

 The way she behaves towards Taek really makes me happy. Where is old DS who challenge JB eat cake in one bite? She hid her face and covered her mouth when she wanted burping in front of Taek!!!  Ohooo... now, she acted “differently” .

Again, I’m happy when she comes to his room just to drop by the Anpan fish shape cakes specially bought for him (my God, she keeps parraling SW’s omma action, giving redbean fish shaped cake to Taek’s appa). And her reaction when she tought Taek just finished watcing racy video with the boys ç=== screaming “acting wife” LOL . And How excited DS, reminding Taek not to forget about his promise to call her? Hahaha... this girl really shows her feeling.

The scene when DS’s waiting for Taek’s call.. shelooks so miserable.. Taek’s call means so much for her. When Taek cancelled their date, again she looks so dejected. It’s clearly, she’s not OK with it and can’t sleep it off just like old DS.  I think, aware or not, DS starts follow her heart.I hope she will act upon DR’s advice:  It’s OK for her to like someone..eventhough it’s Idiot God TAEK.

About JH: The writer writes JH character consistently: “FULL OF HESITATE” (eventhough he’s a pisces.. he sounds like a libran) and because of his hesitation he always miss the chance/opportunity to react on certain circumstances. He needs to behave exactly like he punched the sunbae who insulted SW. One acts without Hesitaton..JH~aah,  JUST TAKE an action without thinking too far! i think you will come out as a superman too. I really hope that he and Taek will have conversation about their feelings towards DS.. Hey, they have to resolve this issue, right? Both don’t want to jeopardize their close *bromance cough* relationship .. and instead of going fro and backward JH.. I really want him to take a step talking face to face with Taek. I believe, Taek is alreday open his door ready to welcome JH talking about how to resolve their unspoken conflict, anytime. The fact that Taek sends DS giving back JH’s wallet, saying like “ JH~ah.. now I know your feeling.. I’m giving back your wallet to DS (Taek indeed gives DS a chance to see JH’s real feeling for her, and a chance for DS and JH might end up together), i’ll be here when you want to talk your feeling...” Aaaaah Taekkie yaaa.. such a mature boy!

BTW, ep 16 is Irony part 1.. So i think we won’t see time jump in ep 17 too since there’ll be irony part 2, right? So next episode.. whose irony will be?

I mean.. come on now! How can I not melt when a guy paused, smiled, and greeted me good morning specifically in THIS manner?? You're bad for the heart, Choi Taek! *fans myself*

 

2. "You know nothing about me. I have someone that I like, and i'm going to confess... soon." - EP 14

CIENVJNKVKSASLDLSJD I DIED AT HIS EXPRESSION HERE. The bgm, DS' startled expression, TK's eyes, the way they both sit face to face... One of the best episode cliffhanger in this series. I would LOVE to know DS' response to this.. but alas, we may never see it/ it's gonna be revealed in a flashback later. but no matter what, this scene changes things a little. like what some of you have mentioned, she no longer uses her motherly tone with TK, or pats his head anymore.. at least not in EP 15&16. 

 

1. DS choosing TK's mittens over JH's gloves- EP 8

This gesture means so much to me. Although this doesn't lessen my confidence that JH is endgame (EP 16 did it for me), it changed the way I see their friendship/ relationship. I had a hard time choosing between this scene or the vase.. but I must say that so far, TK's gifts are never insignificant. DS choosing the mittens (albeit perhaps unconsciously or out of ease to avoid raised eyebrows from others) means the first score/ goal for #teamtaek, somehow. Not to forget that the other person who TK gave these mittens to is HIS DAD, for his birthday nonetheless. This shows how important DS is to TK at the same time. This unconscious "seontaek" action is again reiterated in EP 11 when the Sungs evacuated to JH's house, but DS ended up sleeping at TK's anyway because of the plug incident.

Also, I asked @uglypearl about one specific song that they used in the preview of EP 15 below.. and I was told that the song is by Cho Yong Pil and the title is "I Hope It Would Be That Way Now." I googled the lyric and I just feel like sharing it because of how meaningful they are... and how much it tugs at my heartstrings knowing that the gang's separation is inevitable given that there'll be a time skip and they can't stay in one block as neighbors forever...

Edit: i just read DB's recap of EP 16 and DS' question when in the classroom makes these lyrics all the more heart-wrenching.. This is what she said according to DB: “How could you possibly know now, how great now is?” Let me say this guys, we're already 4/5 way through this series.. and I'll look back and think, how great "now" was. At first I was so sure that JH is the husband but as I see Taek's character growth, the possibility of him being the husband increases. The way he says DS doesn't know him at all, him asking DS to do things for him, him learning curse words, smokes and being more comfortable in front of DS...

 

The future husband is definitely not 100% Taek but it is not impossible not to be him since we see Taek displaying his true self as the episodes go by.

 

Omg it's starting to confuse me

Deep down,I know people know the real truth but the fear of R94 is hindering the hearts of many to just focus on what they think should be truth instead of the truth. Confusing,I know.

To be honest it is only like that for people who are there for the romantic aspect. People tend to forget that this is a family drama. I'd be mad if there was no plot in the story at all, but each episodes shows so much of the struggles of each family. Specially now that its dealing with the issue of remarriage, and on the recent episodes it deals with the unnecessary stress put onto kids by school and parents.

 

This drama does not focus on the romantic aspect, but uses it to show the friendship between the characters.

Again,I say yes to this. I'm sure most ppl who r watching R88 didn't watch R94. R94 was about family but focused too much on the love line that it became draggy and annoying, so the writers decided to focus more on family this time around but people still ain't satisfied. Like seriously, what do you want? Like a netz said,

And I say PREACH to this.

I loved the scenes involving TK, don't get me wrong,I love others too but I'm drawn to TK cuz of his nature. And I'm amazed that people do not even care to know more about him or even try but they keep on finding faults and thinking he's a "stumbling block" to their ship. Oh well...its their loss really. *shrugs* you can call him clumsy, or someone acting like a baby, blablabla but I will leave you all with these words from GF about TK..

8. DS nagging at the boys when she saw them out from Taek's house. Is she thinks they watching yadong (porn) movie again? And is it just me or is she intentionally brought something (FISH FISH FISH ) to Taek so just she can go talk to Taek and remind him not to forget to call her after the match?! Uhh... Song Deoksun, soo smooth.... you're really anticipating it dont ya?

9. Touching moment convo between taek and papa Bear. When his dad said he want to be "Joheun chingu / Good friend " with Sunwoo's mom and he won't do it if Taek doesn't like it.He hate it if its make Taek uncomfortable (Not fully understand Korean,but that's what I get).
You do realize Taek's changing gaze from not understand what his dad trying to say to understanding gaze (when his dad mention joheun chingu with Sunwoo's eomma). He look at his dad with understanding gaze plus little smile of understanding. When his dad said he want to tell him first and asking for permission (?) and Papa bear won't do it if taek hate it.
And when its finally his turn to speak, notice that almost-break voice when he said, Appa, It's your life. He just want him to be happy. If his daddy is happy, then he likes it.
It's just another prove that Taek is more mature than kids on his age. When SW took really long journey to finally "accepted" Taek's appa (which is normal for his age). Taek's words "I just want you (his dad) to be happy" is the same when SW (imagining) talking with his dad about this matter and his dad said "I just want your mom to be happy".

11. Look at DS waiting for the phone. And her dissapointment look when Taek canceled the plane. What is she mumbling about when she climb the stair after talking to SW JH DR?? Girl girl girl.... you clearly not being sunny DS huh, Gloomy DS now.... girl please...

 

@bunnyqueens17 sorry to cut your post  but point 8 is really nice, haha. What if she bought the fish cake intentionally? Why fish again? is it a symbol for their love since their childhood?  

For point 9, yes I agree that scene is so touching. TK said "Appa, I wish you could have warm meals when I'm not around" OMG! I'm speechless... He continued "It's your life, appa. I wish you would be happy. As long as you are happy, I'm happy with anything you do  " and the lyrics of "Noel- Together" at that time was 

There are always painful memories hidden inside us

What had hurt you and me so much together?

After those long suffering days

we should give love now

We are having a hard time but as long as we are walking together

For point 11, DS was grumpy and said "Nothing is smooth. Everything is frustrating." and she sighs  Wow, our DS actually expected to have a nice movie date with TK. She said this to the gang after being asked "Why are you here at the reading room?" and she replied "Why can't I study?" So, I guess the frustration here comes from both her concern for her own future and the fact that TK couldn't make it for the date.
