Squid Game Season 2: Release Date, Cast, Plot Details, Spoilers, and More

Beebom Staff - Last Updated: June 14, 2022 8:33 am

If you are a fan of the Netflix K-drama TV show Squid Game, it’s time to celebrate! Netflix recently announced the second season of Squid Game, its most successful and one of the best TV series available on the platform. The announcement came through Netflix’s official social channels, which hyped the fans globally. At first, writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk mentioned the possibility of moving forward with the series. However, he wasn’t sure if that would work since most K-dramas conclude in a single season. Luckily, the record-breaking TV series was loved by fans, and it was motivating enough for Netflix to officially greenlit Squid Game for Season 2.

Still, we have limited knowledge about how the series might proceed after the last season’s cliffhanger ending. Therefore, we have created this detailed guide to answer all your burning questions. So, let’s see what we can expect from Squid Game’s second season, including the returning cast, plot ideas, release date, and more.

Squid Game Season 2: Everything You Need to Know (June 2022)

Spoiler Warning: The post contains heavy spoilers for Squid Game season 1, so proceed further at your own discretion.

Table of Contents

Squid Game Season 2 Release Date

In an interview with Vanity Fair, director Hwang mentioned that audiences can expect Squid Game Season 2 to release around the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024. At the time of the interview, Hwang revealed that he had written only three pages of script and wasn’t sure how to take the story further. He mentioned that the audience would see more games that would test humanity repeatedly.

Neither Netflix nor the producers behind Squid game have officially mentioned the release date for the second season. However, if we are to believe Hwang, the next Squid Game season will air by the end of 2023. We will provide you with the confirmed release date as soon as there is an official announcement.

Squid Game Season 2: Trailers

At the time of writing this article, Netflix has only shared a short teaser trailer for Squid Game season 2. The streaming company tweeted a surprise announcement on the 12th of June, 2022, mentioning the “Red light… GREENLIGHT!” game from the TV show. The tweet further confirms that “Squid Game is officially coming back for Season 2!”

You can check out the iconic robot doll from the show’s first game in the teaser below:

Netflix is yet to release any official trailer for Squid Game Season 2. We will update this article to include the first announcement trailer and other trailers as and when Netflix released them.

The first teaser trailer was followed by a message from the writer, director, producer, and creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk. In the follow-up tweet, Hwang thanked the fans and teased some interesting plot points and returning characters for Season 2. So, let’s check out everything we know about the second season of Netflix’s biggest hit, Squid Game.

Squid Game Season 2: Cast Members

Hwang explicitly mentioned in his post on Twitter (attached below) that Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) is returning in Squid Game Season 2. The audience loved his performance in the first season, and it would be exciting to see what the character does next.

Screen_Shot_2022-06-15_at_9.44.57_PM.png

So far, we know that he won the game, but rather than enjoying his 45 billion (~USD$ 35 million) cash prize, he spent his days thinking about the atrocities that happened on the hidden island. Gi-hun is an exciting character who escaped poverty, but his morals aren’t letting him live peacefully. Therefore, it would be thrilling to see Jung-jae playing the kind-hearted protagonist again. You can watch the original Twitter post from director Hwang right here.

tScreenshot_2022-06-15_at_12.03.20_PM.png

Apart from that, Hwan has hinted at the return of the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), a former cop who now oversees the game and leads the masked men in the cult-like group. In the first season, the character shot his brother Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), the police officer who sneaks onto the island where the games are conducted. However, the show never confirmed his demise, and fans expect to see Ha-joon again in the role.

Screenshot_2022-06-15_at_12.03.47_PM.png

Having said that, it would be interesting to see whether the Front Man intentionally shot his brother in a way so as not to kill him. So the mystery around this sibling duo, along with the story of how the cop became the Front Man, is what the second season could explore.

Moreover, the handsome man with the ddakji game in his bag (played by Gong Yoo) is returning for the second season. We last saw this character playing the ddakji game on a railway station when Gi-hun spots him from the other side. That means he is still working with the dangerous organization, and we will see more of him soon.

Director Hwang also teased “Cheol-su” and mentioned him as Young-hee’s boyfriend. Young-hee is the killer robot doll from Squid Game’s pilot episode in the Red Light Green Light game. So, are there more killer robots in this season? Well, seems like it, but only time will tell.

Squid Game Season 2: Plot Details

Squid Game’s season 1 finale left us with a cliffhanger ending. We saw the lead character Seong Gi-hun not board the flight after realizing that the game is still active and the people behind it are keeping an eye on him. It only makes sense that the Season 2 story will follow Gi-hun as the lead character.

However, we do not have any idea what to expect from the plot. Writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk has mentioned that it took him 12 years to prepare the final script for season one, and at the time, he had no intention to continue the story. Therefore, we are in for a surprise.

The only clue we have right now is that someone else is continuing the game after Oh Il-nam’s (Player 001) death. Hwang has mentioned in an interview with The Times that he would like to explore Front Man’s origin in Squid Game Season 2. Now that it’s confirmed that he is returning for the second season, audiences can expect to learn how a former cop ends up overseeing a deadly game. Besides that, who all are behind it and what steps Gi-hun might take to stop them will be exciting to watch.

At the end of the day, one thing’s for sure, we can expect another round of the Squid Game in Season 2. That means we will see another set of people fight for their lives in each game (possibly new ones this time around). We can expect to see more killings, betrayals, and a dark mystery unfold next season.

Lee becomes the first Asian man to win the award, and the first to win it for a non-English-speaking role.

“I’d like to thank god above,” Lee said in an acceptance speech delivered in both English and Korean. His clean-cut look on stage was a far cry from his shaggy appearance on “Squid Game.”

'Squid Game' makes history at U.S., breaking regional, language barrier

By Kim Boram

SEOUL, Sept. 13 (Yonhap) -- Since its official release about a year earlier, South Korea's global sensation "Squid Game" has made history in the world's entertainment industry and helped the Korean content rise in power and influence on the world stage amid Hollywood's efforts for wider diversity and inclusion.

Written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the Korean-language Netflix original series about a deadly competition with 45.6 billion won (US$33 million) in prize money up for grabs has captured a total of six titles at this year's Emmys, becoming the first non-English program ever to win America's most prestigious TV awards.

Although it lost the best drama series honor to HBO's "Succession," it grabbed two major titles of best lead actor for Lee Jung-jae and best directing for Hwang at the 74th edition of Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday (U.S. time), along with four prizes in Creative Arts Emmys last week.

Like Bong Joon-ho's family satire "Parasite" (2019), the first Korean film to win the best picture Oscar, "Squid Game" made history in the U.S. entertainment industry that has been out of reach for non-English TV programs.

The history started at the Gotham Awards last year, where it won the best long-form TV series prize.

At Critics Choice Awards, it was nominated in three categories, including best drama series, and won two prizes for best foreign language series and best actor for its lead, Lee Jung-jae.

Actor Oh Yeong-su, who played the role of an old businessman secretly behind the death game, took home the best supporting actor honor to become the first South Korean actor ever to secure an acting trophy at the American awards show.

The all-Korean show was also recognized by Hollywood guilds, including the Producers Guild of America, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the Art Directors Guild Awards.

At the SAG Awards, in particular, cast members Lee and Jung Ho-yeon won best male actor and female actor, respectively, in the TV drama category, becoming the second Korean actors ever to have won the honor given by Hollywood actors, following Youn Yuh-jung from the immigration film "Minari" (2020).

Experts said "Squid Game" has benefited from the recent strong move to improve cultural diversity and inclusion in Hollywood.

"Hollywood has been increasingly accepting culturally diversified content, and Korean film, music and TV shows are in the frontline to be recognized by a U.S. audience," said culture critic Ha Jae-geun.

The emergence of global streaming services also helped the all-Korean drama reach about 190 countries while people around the world stayed at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the past, TV content was directly affected by regional borders. TV shows were accessible only to local people, as they were broadcast only over assigned channels.

Over the past decade, however, online-based streaming companies changed the way of enjoying TV content, providing simultaneous and uniform distribution to people around the globe in local languages.

As a Netflix original, "Squid Game" offers dubbed versions and subtitles in about 30 languages, playing a key role in expanding its popularity to the global level.

The nine-part series recorded a total of 1.65 billion hours of viewing in the first four weeks, becoming the biggest hit series in Netflix's history. It was the first South Korean-made TV show to top the streamer's weekly viewership chart in the United States.

"Netflix is working as a bridge linking Korea and the U.S., the world's strongest cultural powerhouse," culture critic Kim Seong-soo said. "U.S. viewers have now realized that there is much more entertaining content and can enjoy subtitled or dubbed versions."

In his acceptance speech after winning a best directing Emmy for "Squid Game," Hwang did not forget to mention the role of Netflix and thanked its CEO, Ted Sarandos.

"I want to give a huge thanks to Netflix," he said. "I don't think I made history by myself. It was you (Sarandos) who opened up the door for 'Squid Game' and invited us here at Emmys."

‘Squid Game’ Creator Addresses Concerns That Netflix’s Real-Life Competition Spinoff Is Problematic

September 13, 2022 12:21pm PT
By Ethan Shanfeld| VARIETY

When Netflix announced it had greenlit a reality series based on the murderous competition in “Squid Game,” fans of the hit Korean show were quick to point out the irony in translating the tragic tale, which creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told Variety is a “fable about modern capitalist society,” into reality TV.

Now, Hwang is urging “Squid Game” fans not to “take things too seriously,” saying he has met with the creator of the reality spinoff, titled “Squid Game: The Challenge,” and hopes “they will be carrying on my vision and intention as much as possible for the show.”

Hwang addressed the spinoff Monday night at the Emmys, where “Squid Game” made history— and scooped up a handful of awards in the process. Hwang won best directing for a drama series for the pilot episode, “Red Light, Green Light,” while star Lee Jung-Jae became the first Asian actor ever to win best actor in a drama.

“I think that even though our show does carry quite a heavy message — and I know that there are some concerns of taking that message and creating it into a reality show with a cash prize,” Hwang said backstage at the ceremony. “However, I feel like when you take things too seriously, that’s really not the best way to go for the entertainment industry. It doesn’t really set a great precedent.”

Hwang added: “I would say that reproductions of such efforts are going to bring new meaning to the industry, and I hope that this is going to be a great new direction for the industry overall.”

“Squid Game” was nominated for 16 Emmys and won six. The series, which broke Netflix viewership records, has been renewed for Season 2.

‘Squid Game captured the zeitgeist’: Emmys history maker benefited from good timing, Korean social media says of show’s awards

  • The first non-English-language show to earn a major Emmy award, Squid Game took home the best drama series actor and director awards in Los Angeles
  • Reaction in Korea was mostly positive, with social media posts noting the show had overcome its subtitling and had a story that fitted the global mood

Squid Game didn’t just have a big night at the Emmys. It had a historic one.

After earning 14 nominations in July, as well as prizes from the Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice Awards earlier this year, Netflix’s brutal blockbuster capped off its run on Monday by becoming the first Korean series, and the first TV series not in English, to win a major Primetime Emmy Award.

While it lost to Succession for best drama series, the Korean show, about a deadly game of survival in which contestants with money troubles compete for a cash prize, earned series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk the Emmy for drama series directing, Squid Game’s first prize of the night. He is the first Asian and first South Korean to take home the award. He was also nominated for writing.

Lee Jung-jae received the best drama acting Emmy for his lead performance as Seong Gi-hun. Earlier in the night, Jung Ho-yeon lost out to Ozark’s Julia Garner for supporting actress, while supporting actor nominees Park Hae-soo and Oh Yeong-su were defeated by Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen.

Monday night’s haul added to the four Emmys Squid Game picked up at last weekend’s Creative Arts ceremony: special visual effects in a single episode; stunt performance; production design; and guest actress Lee You-mi for her memorable performance as contestant Ji-yeong.

One of Netflix’s most-watched shows, Squid Game has already been greenlit for a second season, so it will have a chance to increase its Emmy take in future.

Korea’s Yonhap News Agency noted that the show had “overcome the 1-inch barrier of subtitles as Parasite did”, referring to that film’s 2020 Oscars best picture win.

Koreans on Twitter had mixed reactions to Squid Game’s Emmys success. Most posted their congratulations, but some asked whether the awards for the show represented tokenism.

Writing in Korean, one Twitter user asked: “How did Squid Game win the best director award, beating shows such as Severance, Succession, Ozark and Yellowjackets?

Among Korean users who retweeted the post, one wrote: “I truly congratulate the series for winning, but … it seems the Emmys took advantage of it to counter their reputation as ‘the most racist’ awards.”

Another commenter felt good timing and its good storytelling were behind its Emmy wins.

“There are a lot of series better than Squid Game. But Squid Game captured the zeitgeist. It was lucky to some extent that a series which depicted [a hellish Korea] received funding and spread throughout the world when the world was also entering that hellish life.”

Whether Monday’s honours open the door for other foreign-language series to receive Emmy love remains to be seen, though recent years have seen no shortage of acclaimed contenders, including HBO’s adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels, My Brilliant Friend; Apple TV+‘s lush, multilingual Pachinko, and the French-language Netflix hits Call My Agent! and Lupin.

Actor Lee Jung-jae, director Hwang Dong-hyuk score historic wins at Emmy Awards

By Lee Gyu-lee

Everything "Squid Game" has achieved at the Emmy Awards is a first: the first Korean, the first Asian and the first non-English performing actor, director and series to be nominated and clinch awards.

The Netflix original series has set records in the Korean and global entertainment industries, winning a total of six awards, including Outstanding Lead Actor and Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series.

Actor Lee Jung-jae was named best lead actor at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards held in Los Angeles on Monday (local time), becoming the first Korean, the first person of an Asian nationality and the first non-English performer ever to nab the trophy in the category.

He beat strong contenders ― Jason Bateman from "Ozark," Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong from "Succession," Bob Odenkirk from "Better Call Saul" and Adam Scott from "Severance."

"Thank you to the Television Academy, thank you to Netflix, and thank you to the director for making realistic problems we all face come to life so creatively on the screen with a great script and amazing visuals," Lee said in English upon accepting the award at the ceremony, held at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

He continued in Korean: "To everyone watching from Korea, my dearest fans, friends and family, I want to share this joy with you. Thank you."

The award was the latest one for Lee to receive for "Squid Game" in the U.S., following those at the Critics Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild, Independent Spirit Awards and Hollywood Critics Association Awards.

In a speech backstage after the award ceremony, Lee said the content business has changed a lot during his 30-year acting career.

"When we presented Korean content overseas in the past, we asked them to see our story, our culture. But now there are so many ways that we can communicate with overseas viewers so instantly, so I really feel we are connecting so fast with audiences all over the world," he said.

"I can see that if we think our story is entertaining and meaningful, it can be understood and enjoyed anywhere in the world. I believe that if we bring any ideas and create content more freely, we'll be able to communicate with many people (worldwide)," he said.

The smash-hit series' director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, claimed another historic win at the awards, achieving Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series with the series' episode, "Red Light, Green Light." He is the first director to win in the category with a foreign-language series in the history of the prestigious award.

Fellow nominees for the category included Ben Stiller of "Severance," Mark Mylod, Lorene Scarfaria, and Cathy Yan of "Succession," Karen Kusama of "Yellowjackets" and Jason Bateman of "Ozark."

"Since 'Squid Game' got 14 nominations at the Emmys, people keep telling me that I made history. But I don't think I made history by myself because it was you (Netflix) who opened up the door for 'Squid Game,' inviting us here tonight at the Emmys. So I believe I have to say, we all made history together," he said in English after accepting his trophy.

"And I truly hope 'Squid Game' won't be the last non-English series to be here at the Emmys. And I also hope this won't be my last Emmy either. I'll be back with Season 2," Hwang said.

The dystopian thriller series, about a group of people playing deadly rounds of children's games to win prize money, notched 14 nominations at the awards, including the best supporting actor categories for actors Park Hae-soo, O Yeong-su and Jung Ho-yeon.

It had won a total of six awards, including four ― guest actress, stunt performance, production design and visual effects ― during the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards held last week.

Lee and Jung also appeared on stage as the presenters for the Outstanding Variety Sketch Series category. On the stage stood a giant doll that was shown in an episode of "Squid Game," and the two actors performed like they were playing "Red Light, Green Light."

For the historical win at the Emmy, President Yoon Suk-yeol sent congratulatory messages to both Hwang and Lee.

For Hwang, Yoon said, "Your insight and approach toward unfairness and the loss of opportunities, which are difficult problems in modern society, have gained global sympathy."

To Lee, the president said his 30-year acting career has borne fruit. "I expect you to continue working actively on films and dramas that can impress audiences globally."

Lee Jung Jae Tests Positive For COVID-19 Upon Returning To Korea After Emmy Awards

dummy.jpeg?s=900x600&e=t

Sep 20, 2022
by E. Cha

After returning home from his historic Emmy win, Lee Jung Jae has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

On September 20, Lee Jung Jae’s agency Artist Company announced that the actor had tested positive for COVID-19 after undergoing a routine PCR test upon his return to Korea.

“In accordance with disease control protocol, actor Lee Jung Jae underwent PCR testing after he returned to Korea on September 18, and his test results came back positive,” stated the agency.

“Actor Lee Jung Jae has currently halted all of his scheduled activities, and he is self-isolating in accordance with the guidelines of government health authorities,” continued Artist Company. “Our agency will adhere strictly to health authorities’ guidelines and do our utmost to help our actor focus entirely on his recovery, while considering his health our top priority.”

On September 18, Lee Jung Jae returned to Korea from the United States after becoming the first Asian actor in history to win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the Emmy Awards (for his starring turn in the mega-hit “Squid Game”).

Fortunately, Lee Jung Jae’s friend Jung Woo Sung and his “Squid Game” co-stars Park Hae Soo and Jung Ho Yeon—all of whom took the same flight with him back to Korea—have all tested negative for COVID-19.

Wishing Lee Jung Jae a speedy recovery!
