Studio Dragon is expected to grow further in the second half of the year amid strong second-quarter earnings, according to a report.

According to Studio Dragon on the 7th, its second-quarter operating profit was 16.9 billion won and sales were 161.4 billion won. The figures are up 56.3 percent and 25.9 percent, respectively, from a year earlier.

It was 'The King: Eternal Monarch' who acted as a filial son. Kim Hoe-jae, a researcher at Daishin Securities, said, "With The King's performance, we achieved the highest sales ever." Overseas sales increased 41 percent year-on-year to 59.4 billion won, marking the largest overseas sales ever.

South Korea: Fans who follow Korean dramas will definitely recognize the faces of both of them, as they are both older actors in the Korean art scene, but often appear in new dramas. 82-year - old actress Kim Young-ok and 66-year - old actor Kim Chang-wan.

Actress Kim Young-ok has acted as the guardian of Lee Minho in two popular dramas, The King: Eternal Monarch and Boys Over Flowers.

CJ ENM: Profitability-focused Strategy Paying off

Studio Dragon rising sky-high

Studio Dragon delivered revenue of KRW161.4bn (+25.9%YoY) and OP of KRW16.9bn (56.3%YoY), beating the market consensus by 3.4%/4.5%. Programming revenue reached a record; non-captive revenue skyrocketed 646% YoY but captive revenue fell 30.5% YoY. Drama sales climbed 9.3% YoY on average to KRW470mn per work amid the growing popularity of K-dramas, particularly The King: Eternal Monarch.

TV ad revenue to recover; smooth sailing for K-content business

We think the TV ad market passed through a trough in 2Q20. With digital ad companies benefiting from the COVID-19’s impact, CJ ENM’s Media earnings turned around QoQ, raising hope that TV ad demand has begun to pick up alongside a recovery in demand for traditional media ads. We highlight Studio Dragon’s rapidly growing proportion of overseas sales. Netflix mentioned at its earnings release that Korean media companies, unlike their peers in other countries, are not experiencing delays in content production in the wake of the pandemic.

Different Tastes of Korean Drama on Television and Streaming

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia -

The development of streaming services in recent years has influenced the achievement of Korean drama ratings  on South Korean national and cable television channels.

Korean dramas, which are usually able to get an average rating of up to 30 percent, now mostly only last in the 6-10 percent range.

"The King: Eternal Monarch" is a drama that represents this. The drama, with big star Lee Min-ho, only got an average rating of 6-8 percent in each episode.

On the other hand, the drama managed to attract the attention of international audiences and is among the most sought-after Korean dramas and even the most popular on Netflix.

[HanCinema's News] Studio Dragon Posts Best Ever Second Quarter Earnings Off of Strong Drama Performances

In a report released on August 6th detailing Studio Dragon's financial performance over the second quarter, the drama production studio revealed a record-breaking 135 million dollars in total sales. This represented a 26% increase over the same time period the previous year. Actual earnings improved at an even higher margin, as increased international business has allowed Studio Dragon to make more money while spending relatively little.

Three dramas in particular have driven much of this growth- "Crash Landing on You", "The King: Eternal Monarch", and "It's Okay to Not Be Okay", all of which have been very successful internationally on Netflix. "The King: Eternal Monarch" likely deserves most of the credit, as it is the only one of these dramas to have aired entirely during the second quarter. The news is ironic, given how a previous report had investors cash out of Studio Dragon due to the drama's perceived poor performance.

A representative for Studio Dragon described these numbers as a strong argument for the merits of Studio Dragon's increasingly internationally oriented strategy.

Studio Dragon Unlimited Growth Potential
More than 21 dramas will be supplied over the next three years through a contract with Netflix.

...

Considering the trend of spreading the untact culture under the Covid-19 and the rapid development of the OTT platform and rising global demand for K-drama, the high growth rate is expected to continue for the time being.

It is estimated that Studio Dragon's sales in the second quarter will be 139 billion won (8.4% growth from the same period last year) and operating profit will be 16.9 billion won (56.8% increase from the same period last year).

The effect of "The King: Eternal Monarch" on the non-captive channel, which was aired simultaneously on Netflix, was warmly reflected. Also, Netflix sales of popular old-fashioned IPs took place during the current quarter.

Hwang Sung-jin, an analyst at Hyundai Motor Securities, said, "We have unlimited growth potential."

He then predicted that through investment points and conclusions, Sutudio Dragon's reputation and value as the nation's top drama studio, which is at the vanguard of the spread of K-drama, will continue in the future for the time being.

Lee Jung Jin in "The King: Eternal Monarch"

Playing the role of "male god" Lee Min Ho in the famous project The King of Immortality (The King: Eternal Monarch), Lee Jung Jin proved not to be inferior in terms of charisma as well as acting despite turning 42 years old.

The actor takes on the role of Lee Lim - the thief in the movie. After plotting to harm the emperor in order to take the throne, Lee Lim did not regret it, but also plotted to harm his successor. Besides, this evil man has even greater ambitions when he wants to dominate the whole world by manipulating and mastering both parallel worlds.

@NetflixInNews1  6 Aug via machi twit

The King: Eternal Monarch is the most-watched K-Drama of Netflix in 2020. The second in line is It’s Okay To Not Be Okay including Crash Landing on You, Itaewon Class, and Hospital Playlist.

I just want to clarify upfront that this post is not an attack against "Its Okay not to be Okay" or Kim Soo Hyun.  I watched it and thought it was a good drama.

Here is my comment to William Schwartz printed in the comment section and the response by the moderator.

“The King Eternal Monarch” has been particular galling.  I read your reviews of “The King, Eternal Monarch.” You criticize the cheesy lines, that viewers could not endure the brand of melodrama which appears to have fallen out of fashion. You make it sound like that drama is a total failure. You stress at every opportunity, the low and falling ratings of the drama “The King” in South Korea. Period, had nothing positive at all to say about the series.

However, when it comes to “It’s Okay” you excuse its lackluster ratings in South Korea by saying that it has been a noteworthy example of defying standard terrestrial ratings with strong performance in non-traditional metrics (meaning global success in such platforms as Netflix)

Your article “It’s Okay is Global Hallyu K-drama”.  Mentions the success globally of Goblin, Mr. Sunshine, Crash Landing on You and Its Okay not to be Okay. (The King is left out.)

Another article “It’s Okay  Attracts a Sizable International Fanbase” states that  "It's Okay to Not Be Okay" also enjoys high ratings on viewer aggregate ranking sites, beating out "The King: Eternal Monarch" and even "Crash Landing on You".

In all your articles, you omitted and never mentioned the fact that “The King” is a huge success globally. It topped the Netflix charts and was as high as 8th in the world for the year 2020. It topped Wavve charts and Good Data Charts.  It paved the way for It’s Okay even though, It’s Okay may eventually overtake The King, it is a fact that today:-

The Top 10 Most-Watched Netflix K-Dramas In The World This Year

In the 1st place spot is 2020 drama The King: Eternal Monarch, which is the 10th most-watched Netflix show in the world overall this year. It’s also currently still in the Netflix top 10 in Malaysia, Singapore, Nigeria, and more.

I also suspect that your bias is not against Kim Eun Sook since you praise her other dramas Goblin and Mr. Sunshine. It is telling that your article about the DCInside Celebrity poll, you had to snidely denigrate Lee Min Ho’s win by insinuating that the answers are counter-intuitive, whatever that means and that Koreans lack background in international media. If Kim Soo Hyun was the winner of the poll, would you have written such an article. You don’t have to like Lee Min Ho. All I ask is that you be honest with the facts and not try to mislead to promote your favorite drama or actor or manufacture consent.

Moderator response:

The reason we're running more "It's Okay to Not Be Okay" coverage compared to "The King: Eternal Monarch" is because while "The King: Eternal Monarch" was still airing it was overshadowed domestically by "The World of the Married". We only have so much space to do reporting, and "The King: Eternal Monarch" simply did not seem like an important priority based on our own analytics of what readers are interested in as well as what was considered news locally in South Korea at the time.

S. Korean drama, film productions receive mixed Q2 results amid COVID-19 pandemic

Studio Dragon, a drama production company owned by entertainment giant CJ ENM, seems to be the biggest winner for the April-June period, during which people were asked to stay at home and enjoyed TV shows or binge-watched Netflix.

Its sales reached 161.4 billion won (US$136.1 million) for the April-June period, up 25.9 percent from a year earlier.

Its operating profit soared 56.3 percent on-year to 16.9 billion won, and its net profit surged 82.1 percent on-year to 13.4 billion won.

The company said the strong bottom line was led by brisk overseas sales of its hit dramas, like "The King: Eternal Monarch," etc.

So what about the weeks after TWOTM ended, wasn't TKEM still newsworthy, especially now with its global success? lame excuse

Totally with you @syntyche on the lame excuse!     Intially when I read the Mod's response, I could not understand it much.  It's true that TKEM was shadowed somewhat by TWOTM but it came to LIGHT after TWOTM ended.   What space was she talking about?  Both had low ratings in Korea due to several factors but TKEM reception was way higher and better.    Wonder where they massaged their data (analytics) from?   Which point of readers' interests, selectively vs priority?  And which period at that time?  Only that one particular period?   Why blatantly omit TKEM when you write about the others?  It's not like TKEM was aired last year - it ended just a week right before IOTNBO.

Not sure if this has been posted here or not, besides Sebastian Roche (actor), another western entertainment person, Tiffany Vogt (TV critics and entertainment reporter), recently expressed her admiration and recognition for TKEM.

I like this post of hers saying that 100,000 million fans wants TKEM Season 2. She must know something as a film critic.
