Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People: Episode 24

hgd24-00146.jpg

It feels like we’ve just been preparing for the past twenty episodes, and finally, we’re starting to make some headway. Key decisions are being made and events are propelling us toward the final confrontation we’ve been waiting for. But for some reason, I’m not feeling as much excitement as I was last week. Perhaps it’s the lack of blood, guts, and fighting, which I must admit are my favorite parts of the show at this point. You can’t help what you love.

EPISODE 24 RECAP

Both Yeonsangun and Gil-dong are plagued with nightmares, but the causes behind their respective restless nights are vastly different. The king fears Gil-dong’s return and replays Gil-dong’s last words to him over in his dreams. He wakes up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, and Eunuch Kim rushes over to him with a worried expression. Yeonsangun tells him his theory that Gil-dong must be an illegitimate nobleman’s child or a long-lost royal cousin, because there’s no way a plebeian could have that much confidence facing a divine being such as himself. When Eunuch Kim protests, saying that Gil-dong even professed that he was a commoner with no special bloodlines or family ties to speak of, Yeonsangun is convinced that since Gil-dong is a thief, he’s a liar as well, and he must have deceived everyone about his ancestry.

Whereas, in Gil-dong’s nightmares, he is haunted by the suffering of the people that are rotting away in Yeonsangun’s packed cells—bloodied, bruised, and without hope. So he resolves to save them, and the following day, he gathers up all of the people in the cave hideout to recruit volunteers. Gil-dong announces that while they have no power over the weather or mother nature, they do have the power to bring down the king. Then, he brings up his plan to steal the citizens in prison from Yeonsangun’s cells. He asks for recruits because he needs all the help he can get to rescue so many people.

However, the people can’t follow his mindset—they say that they only followed Hong Hero because they needed the food and shelter in order to survive. They didn’t come there necessarily because they wanted to defend justice and go against the king. But a courageous woman stands apart from the crowd and says that although she doesn’t know how to fight, she’ll help Gil-dong in any way she can, and some other brave souls follow her example. But it seems like most able-bodied men don’t agree with Gil-dong’s plans—they followed him because they wanted to live, not because they wanted to die. So, in huddled corners, they think about betraying Gil-dong to the king because that would ensure their survival. Yonggae overhears their conversations and reports back to Gil-dong about the fear that these people have. Gil-dong looks troubled after hearing this news, but then the shamaness appears at the Hong brothers’ strategic planning table.

Spoiler

She gives them a new insight into the state of the people’s mindset: They’ve lived oppressed all their lives and don’t know the taste of freedom and success. So, she suggests that each of the Hong brothers tell their individual stories of outwitting the corrupt system, fighting for justice, and of how following Gil-dong has been liberating for them.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

by DB Staff

(girlfridayRebel: Thief Who Stole the People: I was SO confused this week, because Gil-dong was suddenly not imprisoned anymore, and I was convinced I had accidentally skipped an episode. Did the editor fall asleep on the job? Seriously, why would you make the hero’s big jailbreak happen offscreen, only to spend the rest of the week in limbo just waiting for the big fight to start? You have until Monday to make it up to me.

Ep.25 thoughts:

Okay, so the story is marching along.

- The king is a bad person. Check. His people are turning on him. Check. Eventually everyone will turn on him. That slavish eunuch Ja-Won will be the last one to stab him in the back.

- That Creepy Teacher and Prince Choong Won and that wicked Lady Jo are bad people. They will all turn on each other, Mexican standoff style.

We will enjoy watching them burn. Bad people lose, good people win, happy ending. And screw you, Jeong-Hak. Let's not forget about you.

- And Nok Soo... girl, you are screwed, too. History tells us so. I still like her, but obviously not as much as I used to. You are COMPLICIT, girl.

History tells us that this is the year before Yeongsangun's reign ends. So the next 5 episodes will be all about Bad King going down.

BUT! Are we still playing the Who-is-Eorinie game? Gil-Dong should have recognized Eorinie right away, but he didn't. He clearly recognized her before, when he saw the two girls in the forest.

But Gil-Hyun recognized her right away. So one of them is wrong? WHUT.

I'm going to place my bets on Sweet Girl being Eorinie in the end, for two reasons:

(1) There must be a reason Sweet Girl is taking so much screen time.

(2) We still don't know what happened to Eorinie. How did she get into the palace? Why can't she remember her brothers at all? What did Creepy Teacher do to brainwash her?

The only real clues we have that Mean Girl is Eorinie is that she has that blue cord, and that Gil Hyun thinks she is Eorinie (but Gil Dong doesn't).

So I feel like there is room for a twist. I don't know how Mean Girl and Sweet Girl are involved, but I do hope that they are both involved in the story for a good reason, and not just to mess with the viewers.

I really hope they will explain all this. Can't wait until tomorrow!

It was so close today.  Ga Ryung was so close to finding out about GD.  I can't believe they're still playing the Eorini game.  GD and GH thinks two different girls is their sister.  This makes me think that the real Eorini is gone and Sang Hwa was close to the real Eorini and keeps the piece of cloth to remember her.  Well that would be a real twist...

The king is losing everything-- his people and mind.  Nok Su will be gone soon.  We're getting close to the moment we're all waiting for - Ga Ryung's uptimate fate.

GH was the star of today's episode. I absolutely love how he was never suspected, his revenge is definitely the best. And Madam Jo's face when she found out about his identity was priceless. I thought she was going to get a heart attack. SH is as evil as the mother I could see it in his eyes,GH has to watch out for him.

It is sad that URN cannot remember her brother's but definitely understandable. She was helped and brainwashed by Scholar Song. I just hope that before the big show down she will remember. I think she is the real URN they showed a clip of when she gave water to GD because she said she could not see a person dying of thirst. Now if we go back to when GD lost her (after they fell off the cliff) she was going to get him water because he was dying of thirst and that is when she disappeared.

Where was Mori today? I need his evil boy eyeliner to choose a side already.

GR needs to get out of the palace pronto because I have a feeling NS and the King will try to kill her.
By the way props to Kim Ji Suk who is doing a great job playing psycho king.

Anxiously waiting for tomorrows episode!!!

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People" Episode 25

photo842738.jpg

Increasingly I find myself thinking that the most logical interpretation of Gil-dong's character in "Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People" is that he's just a figment of King Yeonsangun's imagination, blown completely out of proportion. It's hard to think of any other reason why Gil-dong inexplicably leaves King Yeonsangun unharmed instead of just killing the guy outright. A figment of imagination, that I can understand going into long-winded speeches. But a guy who's actually going to war against the state?

The rather limited scope of Gil-dong's war doesn't help matters. While we've seen plenty of preparation and exposition it's not totally clear what Gil-dong and his team are actually trying to do long term. They just seem to be attacking King Yeonsangun's bad policies on a piecemeal basis. The way with which King Yeonsangun is specifically singled out as the main bad guy is also confusing, considering how for most of "Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People" corrupt nobles have been the real problem.

Which brings me back to that speech, where Gil-dong is referencing Amogae as if this is a person King Yeonsangun should be familiar with. At the time when all that bad stuff was going on, from King Yeonsangun's perspective, Amogae was just another random bad dude whose punishment needed to be rubber stamped. King Yeonsangun's personal involvement in Amogae's case was pretty limited, so why is Gil-dong taking all of this so personally?

Now, as to why King Yeonsangun takes all this personally, that's a much easier question to answer. All the constant whispering among close subordinates about how great King Yeongsangun is have ruined what little objective decision making ability the man ever had. Again, this is why I've been finding more appeal with the whole "Gil-dong is just a figment of King Yeonsangun's imagination" theory, because in that case, King Yeonsangun's paranoia about Gil-dong being Nok-soo's ex-boyfriend is less about him being smart and more about his being crazy.

Spoiler

Obviously that theory can't be true, since we've seen ample evidence that Gil-dong exists outside of King Yeonsangun's imagination. It's just, I'm finding so much of "Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People" to be dull right now I'm desperate for any sort of alternate interpretation to help spice things up. The drama keeps obsessing over Eorini's position in greater palace politics, once more stalling any sort of dynamic action. It's another one of those careful what you wish for situations. Hard to believe I used to be annoyed that we weren't hearing enough about Eorini.

I've seen several knetizen comments praising the OST in the last few weeks, hopefully MBC will release an album with all the songs + instrumentals.

Ah so it seems Sang Hwa is Eorini then. I'm glad Nok Soo didn't turn on Ok Ran as easily as it seemed.

Congrats to Rebel, ending the week at number 1!!  Only four more episodes to go.  It's been a while since rebel had two solid episodes in the same week.  Episodes 25 and 26 were really good this week, especially 26 because it was about the people.  They shined in this episode by being the true heroes.  I'm glad the Eorini game is over.  The reunion was long overdue.  I'm hoping that now Eorini has her memory she'll mention Ga Ryung being at palace to GD.  I wish someone would tell GR that GD is alive.  Also what is GR's new title now?  In his moment of solace, GD can only find peace about his people as thinks of GR.  Poor guy misses his wife.  It's true what they say you won't know someone's importance until they're gone from your life.

We saw a bit of Mori today.  He has yet to grow his facial hair so I guess we still won't see the final battle.  It will probably be during the last week.

In today's episode the people showed to be true followers and willing to stand up to the King. It was enjoyable to see them in action.

Finally URN remembered her brothers, now I want her to go save OR. I wonder if she will also want to save GR, or if she will tell GD about GR.
Talking about GR the girl needs to get out of the palace. I have a feeling NS will tell the King about GR and GD. She will do it out of jealousy and anger. I hope our OTP meet before the stake scene. It saddens me to see GD see imaginary GR, however I like that he is always open to telling her about his problems.

Once again the big question, What the heck is going through Mori's mind? He seemed a bit bothered and dissapointed at SH words that he is a servant and it is not possible for them to work together.
I think Mori will end up killing Mama Boy. Prince CW will atempt to get rid of Scholar Song and he will tell his servant to kill Prince CW. It is all a cycle with evil crew. I just hope someone kills Madam Jo sorry ( not sorry). And I hope Mori lives and joins GD.

Only 4 more episodes to go for the scene we have all been waiting for.

Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People: Episode 25

Rebel25-00135.jpg

Get ready to feel tons of gratification at once, because Team Gil-dong is finally taking some major steps forward. While every move is being carefully and strategically planned, the king is making things quite easy by creating his own demons, and with those demons becoming Gil-dong’s allies, the tide turns drastically as Gil-hyun finally makes the checkmate move he’s been planning for a long time now.

EPISODE 25 RECAP

The king’s banquet is interrupted by silhouettes lining the rooftop in plain sight. It’s Joseon Batman Gil-dong and his Hong bandits, there to seek revenge. Gil-dong calls out to Yeonsangun with his given name, Lee Yung, and smoke bombs go off as Gil-dong majestically flies down with his cape flowing in the wind (lol). The king is urgently escorted away as the Hong bandits fight off the guards and ministers in hazy visibility. Gil-hyun hears the commotion inside the palace and orders his guards to protect the king. After closing the gates, he stops and shows the slightest of smiles.

Spoiler

Rebel25-00012.jpg Rebel25-00009.jpg

As the king is carried away by his loyal eunuchs, another smoke bomb goes off in his way. Gil-dong swiftly fights off the guards and eunuchs in the smoke, leaving the king completely exposed. The smoke clears, and Gil-dong smirks at the scared king before riding off on his horse. The disdain provokes the king to jump on a horse to chase Gil-dong, and he vows to capture the bandit with his own hands. Gil-hyun orders his disguised guards to divide into two teams and meet back up at the north gate. Gil-hyun’s team frees the rebellious descendants, and the other team frees the imprisoned musician mothers, whose children have been safely taken care of under Gil-dong’s care. They come to rescue the prisoners while Ga-ryung is visiting Ok-ran, and she can barely believe it when the guards announce that they are the Hong Hero’s people.

She convinces Ok-ran to join them, and as they run away, she remembers Sang-hwa. She tells the guard that she will join them after finding Sang-hwa, and he warns her that she must meet them at the north gate within the hour. She promises to be there and searches the palace for Sang-hwa, who we now know to be the real Eorini. The guards enter the palace to find the ministers passed out on the ground with signs around their necks labeling their crimes. They are accused of irresponsible flattery and for selling out their friends, all of which have turned the king into a tyrant. The guilty ministers are all sprawled out on the palace grounds, and it’s an amusing sight.

Yeonsangun chases Gil-dong on horseback onto a hill and confronts him about his true identity (finally, the intro scene of the first episode!). He asks if Gil-dong is a son of a royal family of Goryeo (the previous ruling dynasty) or an indignant son of a concubine. Gil-dong laughs and clarifies that he’s simply the son of his father, Amogae, a slave who was in the lowest class in Joseon. At this, Yeonsangun laughs and says that this is impossible — there is no way for Gil-dong to have come from such a lowly person. Gil-dong reciprocates the doubt and asks how the son of heaven could become such an ignoble person.

Spoiler

Rebel25-00030.jpg Rebel25-00029.jpg

A disguised guard leads the palace maids through the palace toward the north gate, but Ok-ran hesitates because Ga-ryung has not returned. She tries to delay the guard, but he says that they’re out of time. The guard surreptitiously bows to Gil-hyun as he leaves to carry out their mission.

Back on the hill, Gil-dong tells Yeonsangun that his parents gave birth to him, but he was made to be like this because of someone else: the king. He lived and died as a merchant, “Footstool,” and a thug. It was a boring and simple life, but he says, “The day you broke my body, the tears of the people flowed over me — realigning my bones and sewing together my ripped skin. So if you want to stop me, you need to stop. If you stop, I could return to my ‘Footstool’ life.”

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People" Episode 26

photo843139.jpg

Now that Eorini has finally been identified, it's up to attempted memory triggers by her brothers and various flashbacks to explain how exactly Eorini has not been able to recognize anything of her own life. It's not clear to me that Eorini was really young enough for such brainwashing to plausibly work, and the motives for anyone to even try it in the first place were comically pointlessly evil for the sake of being evil. Haven't we had enough of that by now?

Apparently not, because King Yeonsangun fills the other parts of this episode with the usual trying to solve problems with needlessly violent orders that just make people more angry at him. Although the real kicker is that King Yeonsangun remains completely oblivious as to why people hate him so much. We always get these juxtapositions of King Yeonsangun enjoying traditional performances while outside the palace people are beaten to death for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Aside from the obvious visual irony, though, this angle remains largely unexplored except to explain why Nok-soo is important to the story, as the main character encouraging King Yeonsangun's artistic side. Ga-ryeong also gets an honorable mention- her big moment is the latest in a long line of scenes wherein a character gets tantalizingly close to just finishing King Yeonsangun off once and for all only for the scene to, as usual, end up coming to nothing. Well, hopefully Ga-ryeong will at least inspire Nok-soo to do something more constructive down the line.

Spoiler

Weirdly enough, the main characters to show serious character development that I've noticed aren't any of the actual named characters, but rather the random extras in Gil-dong's citizen army. Gil-dong continues to show a frustrating unwillingness to acknowledge that fighting King Yeonsangun requires he fight on a vastly larger tactical scale than has been seen up until now. Why bother training peasants how to fight if you're not expecting them to help out?

That's probably what's really come to irritate me about "Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People". At times, the drama shows real promise in accurately identifying how and why power gets abused, but completely pulls its punches when it comes to the moral ambiguity necessary to defeat a corrupt regime- and more importantly, guarantee a replacement with moral scruples. Yes, Yoon Kyun-sang's presence constantly reminds me of the much better "Six Flying Dragons". Unfortunately.

Well, I was very wrong about who Eorinie was, but I'm fine with it. I don't really understand the need for teasing the viewers for so long, but whatever.

As someone else posted earlier, Amogae's children are all smart and have good survival instincts, and "mean girl" Eorinie has shown that she fits that mold. So... yay.

So whenever she was saying she wanted to do stuff for her mother, her mother was actually Teacher Song. But I still have some questions, though:

- She was very motivated to kiss Nok Soo's butt and get ahead. She really wanted to be promoted to Heung Chung, too. Why? Was it part of her mission as a geo-in?

- She was pissed when Ga Ryung got to go into the king's bedroom, when she's been working for years to get there. Why? Also part of her mission?

As many have long suspected, Eorinie was drugged and brainwashed. I guess I'm excited about her because she makes a perfect double agent. She can go to Teacher Song and give him misinformation that will bring him down.

Loved all the villagers showing up to help defeat the king's army. When that one guy died, I was crying.  :bawling:
