AlexandraReid
=== Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching by DB Staff girlfriday >> Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People: What a week to pre-empt the second episode!! The show sure did take its time getting here, but man, when everything came together in just the right way, I was on the edge of my seat and giving up all of my tears. Chae Soo-bin’s emotional roller coaster ride over the course of one episode was stunning, and I can’t believe she made me cry with a blindfold over her eyes. And don’t even get me started on the downtrodden people bursting into song to rally their hero and fight for their freedom. *whimper* cr

honeywell
Episode 28 did not disappoint but I have to admit I think I like episode 27 just a tad bit more. I'm glad I was wrong about what happens with Ga Ryung. I was hoping that the fan theories would be true. So glad they were spot on about how the strawberry scene would tie in with Ga Ryung's fate. It looks like a few of our rebels (if not all) will make it to the end. I think Ok Ran and Eo Ri Ni will be safe until the end. I love though how the king was screaming his lungs out in protecting his captive (Ga Ryung) but once the rebels charged at the soldiers, there was no soldiers within the perimeter of Ga Ryung. I thought it was very easy for the rebels to take down Ga Ryung from that pole. No one was even trying to shoot them down. Also, I still would like to know why Mori has such a soft spot for Ga Ryung. It's like he all a sudden developed this crush on her. Anyways today was very action packed, Yoon Kyun Sang was channeling his Moo Hyul character again. Gil Hyeon finally got his revenge. I wish Mori would see the light and join the rebels. Maybe when Ga Ryiung wakes up, she can knock some sense into him. The evil prince is gone. The king will be overthrown soon and Nok Su will soon be gone too.
hahanzyy
in the earlier episodes, Mori was impressed by GR's feisty character and couldn't stop thinking abut her. i think he already liked her then. i feel very sorry for Mori... His birth father wanted to kill him after knowing he is also a mighty child, then the thug who took him in, & whom he was very loyal to, betrayed him. He is like a very lost child, trying to find acceptance and affirmation from the wrong group of people
chickfactor
I loved Ep.28. A lot of it was predictable, but I thought it was a pretty powerful episode. - That moment when the people of Hyangjumok asked GD and his gang to leave them after saving GR. (Waaaah.) - Their "last meal" together. (Cry, cry...) - When they began singing. (Sob...) - The "I am Spartacus General Hong!" scene. (I can't see, too many tears!) - When Ga Ryung called out to "Gong Hwa Unni!" (OMG, can't stop crying...) I did enjoy Nok Soo's moments of sort-of-humanity. When she smiled when GD was winning, when she shot lots of disgusted looks at the king, and when she wavered a little bit when GR called her Gong Hwa. She's gone over to the dark side a while ago, but her heart hasn't completely died, yet. (On a shallow note, I loved her in her battle outfit. Well, she looks beautiful in anything.) Another guy who chose the dark side and is having some second thoughts - Mori! You and GD need to just hug it out! Prince Choong Won finally dies. A very undignified and pitiful way to go, so petty and stupid until the end. Left in the mountains to die, his body to be torn up by beasts, Teacher Song laughing in his face in his last moments. (You're next, old man!)
AlexandraReid
Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People: Episode 28 by dramallama Get ready to cheer, cry, fist pump, and then cry some more, because everything is so damn epic now that we’re at the height of our rebel conflict. Gil-dong faces an agonizing decision that torments him to his core, but he’s not willing to sacrifice anyone’s life easily, unlike our despotic king. Said king is ready to throw all his manpower for this one battle, and for his pride. But numbers and pride may not be enough to win this war, especially since the rebels are fighting for a cause greater than themselves. EPISODE 28 RECAP Spoiler Tied at the stake, Ga-rung yells to her beloved: “If you retreat because of me, I’ll never see you again!” Gil-dong sees her from the gates and cries out to her. She recognizes his voice, and they both cry longingly for each other. Yeonsangun watches this heartbreaking exchange with a smirk while the rest of his servants behind him look sympathetic. He orders for Ga-ryung to be lowered from the stake, and Jeong-hak looks confused at this order. Yeonsangun says that he’s satisfied with Gil-dong’s reaction, and the order is carried out by Mori, who rushes to get Ga-ryung back down to safety. Overwhelmed with emotion, Gil-dong says that he must go save Ga-ryung. Gil-hyun stops him and tells him that he’ll get killed facing countless enemy soldiers, no matter how strong he may be. He then reminds Gil-dong of the people he must protect, and that puts him in-between a rock and hard place. He looks back to see his wife again, but she’s gone. Ga-ryung is tied up inside the hostage tent, and Yeonsangun approaches her with Nok-soo. Ga-ryung confidently says that her husband will not retreat just for her, but Yeonsangun doesn’t believe her because he saw his fearful reaction. He’s never seen Gil-dong trembling with such fear, he says, and he knows that those daunted by fear will do anything. He promises to let her meet her husband again soon before walking out with a satisfied smirk. Spoiler Nok-soo stays behind and tells Ga-ryung that the world is fair: “You have love, and I have the world. These are the lives we chose.” She turns to leave, but Ga-ryung calls out to her by her former name, Gong-hwa. After a moment of hesitation, Nok-soo leaves the tent while trying to remain unaffected, but it’s clear that Ga-ryung’s desperate pleas affect both her and Mori, who’s standing guard right outside the tent. That night, Gil-dong looks to the tents from the Hyangjumok gates, where he overhears two watchmen talking about their fates. They presume that Gil-dong will decide to save his wife, which means that they will die. This makes Gil-dong’s fatal dilemma even harder. Scholar Song watches the impasse in front of Hyangjumok and anticipates the bloodbath to come. He watches with a distant curiosity, unaffected by the impending massacre of so many people. maddymappo
I love this drama. It is fairly predictable but the incredible OST and the poetry of it, just gets to me. I'm a sucker for the mythic hero of the common person stories. The cast are all beautiful too and doing a wonderful job.

chickfactor
Ep.29 thoughts: - I thought that was good. The king going mad, and the palace emptied out. No one but Nok Soo, Ja Won and Wolhamae at his side. - Nok Soo knows it's over, but she decides to surrender in a dignified way. Ah, she was great. If the king wasn't a mad tyrant, she could have been a great royal courtesan. At least in this version of the story. (Much love for the actress.) - Yay, Ga Ryeong wakes up. I hope there is a happy ending. - Did Jeong Hak finally turn to the good side? Whoa. Does that mean there is hope for Mori?

It's not that Jeong Hak turned to the good side, it's that he has no loyalty to the king anymore since he made him and his mother into slaves (serves them right haha, but also shows how everyone on the king's side backstabs each other). So him telling the rebels where the king was was like a 'screw you king, you did this to me so I'm not loyal to you any more' than him turning away from being a bad person. He's still a classist jerk who just got made into what he despises most so I don't even feel sorry for him. Anyway I can't believe we got only 1 ep left! I'll miss this drama, it's the best drama of 2017 for me and I'm so happy Yoon Kyun Sang's first drama as a lead role is so praised . There's even an article on Naver talking about how all the actors did so well and the drama is full of 'rediscovery' actors. Rebel really spoiled me for other sageuk dramas, I tried watching another one that premiered recently but watching other new sageuk after Rebel is like eating the best Swiss chocolate and then eating Hersheys after that. Both are still chocolate but there's a big difference.

Both are still chocolate but there's a big difference. Oh yeah, good point. I didn't even think about that. Once the king is dethroned, at least he won't have to be a slave anymore, so he must be happy. But did his mom drop dead, screaming about being a slave? We were all hoping she would drop dead, but did she really? Ha ha. I really enjoyed this drama, too. I will miss it.
matchacake
Yeah too bad his mother didn't just drop dead on the spot from her own anger lol. Also they got made government slaves, which from other sageuks I saw, are treated a lot better than privately owned slaves like Ahmogae. So they won't even be treated as badly as they did to him, she's just angry at losing status and becoming a slave at all. I'm worried about what the next king might do to Gil Dong and Co, Teacher Song is talking to him and advising him and while he's ok with using Gil Dong's support for his own purpose of dethrone the king, he still hates that Gil Dong dared to rebel at all. But it looks like Gil Hyun deals with him in the finale.... He better do it fast because he KNOWS that guy is dangerous.
AlexandraReid
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People" Episode 29 So apparently the last episode of "Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People" wasn't just climactic. It was, in fact, the climax of the entire drama. King Yeonsangun is in full on retreat. At first I thought he was just going to regroup and try again but nope, King Yeongsangun quickly regresses into a complete mental breakdown, terrifying his staff. In the end it's actually kind of refreshing that King yeonsangun just starts obsessing about art again, since there's no good way to whitewash the failure of the authority figures here to put down a rebellion. As for me, I feel...oddly kind of cheated, that all of this ended up getting resolved so easily. Part of this, though, is just that "Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People" was set up in such a way that a satisfying resolution wasn't really possible. The only character on King Yeonsangun's side who gets punished is the one who, aside from a fairly justified personal beef with Gil-dong, didn't really do anything all that villainous, and is really just being used as a scapegoat so that authority figures can avoid taking responsibility. This is where the major separation in storylines in "Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People" becomes a big problem. It's hard to really revel in Gil-dong's victory that much when the bad guys are already gearing up to prepare sensible sounding compromises that aren't actually going to change anything substantial. There's always been this awkward disconnect between the system which causes the injustice Gil-dong fights against and the individual persons who become symbolic of that struggle. As usual it's easy to be hyper-critical of "Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People" in ways even I don't necessarily think are all that fair. It's just that the characters are surprisingly difficult to connect to. Gil-dong's got a whole gang of bandits who are easier to describe in terms of their fighting style and clothing than their actual personalities. Other better developed characters, even when evil, end up being more interesting by definition. This also goes for Gil-dong, whose political opinions are oddly perfunctory, and carry far less dramatic weight than his reunion with Ga-ryeong. Incidentally, Ga-ryeong too is a good example of how for all big points about fighting for justice, the fate of this one character ends up feeling a lot more important just because we understand her. As in, we understand that Gil-dong shot an arrow through Ga-ryeong's chest. That kind of stuff doesn't have to be deep to make an impact. cr: Hancinema
