MBC’s Monster adds Park Ki-woong, Jo Boa as spoiled chaebols
by javabeans | February 1, 2016

joboa_21.jpg

Oh great, now I HAVE to watch Monster. I mean, yay I have to watch Monster? I’m not even sure anymore. (It isn’t that it sounds bad; it’s that this is one of those serious, sprawling 50-episode dramas, and man, those take work.)

But with Kang Ji-hwan (Incarnation of Money, Big Man) headlining the series and now Park Ki-woong (Gaksitaaaaal) choosing it as his army comeback drama, who am I to fight it? I’ll just block off April through September on my calendar and settle in for the long haul…

Monster, which comes to us from the writer team (Jang Young-chul, Jung Kyung-soon) who gave us Empress Ki, Incarnation of Money, and History of a Salaryman, kicks off in the late ’90s after the IMF crisis hits, and follows a man who sets out for revenge against society’s top 0.001%, those privileged movers and shakers with all the power. I’m guessing those are the people responsible for the hero’s early tragedy, which kill both his parents and almost him as well. He comes back with a vengeance, for vengeance, and falls in love along the way. The drama has yet to secure a heroine after initially courting Hwang Jung-eum, who didn’t sign on, but is likely to do so soon. We hope.

Park Ki-woong, who will be discharged from military service on February 7, will play the youngest son of a chaebol group chairman who turns increasingly wild and violent. He’s gonna be so good at that and it’ll probably break my heart because I love him. Just don’t go full Namgoong Min on me, okay? I’m not sure I’ll be ready for that much affluenza-induced brutality so soon.

Park’s character is cast aside by his family because he’s born to a concubine (er, I suppose that just means non-wife in this day and age, but chaebol clans do tend to mimic royalty), and he grows up with his mother in America. He comes back and successfully reclaims his position, evicting the opposition that had cut him out, and then transforms into a cold-hearted, dissipated tyrant. Hm, so perhaps he’s the one the former title Tyrant referred to, though it’s entirely possible that with so many corrupt chaebols running around, it could be any of a number of them.

Jo Boa (Missing Noir M), meanwhile, is currently in talks (though not yet finalized) to play the chaebol chairman’s daughter. She’s fussy and rather vain, but falls for Kang Ji-hwan’s charm and complicates his loveline with the heroine, making for a tangled love triangle. (Something tells me she’ll be doing most of the tangling, as the lovelorn one who happens to wield lots of money and privilege.) I like Jo Boa more in bubbly, sweet roles (see: Surplus Princess), but perhaps she can make this potentially difficult-to-like character more approachable, the way Jung So-min did in Bad Guy.

Monster will follow Dazzling Temptation as MBC’s next Monday-Tuesday drama, premiering in April.

Anyway, checking in to the thread that I'm sure I'll be camping in until...September?  :D

Park Ki Woong Joins Kang Ji Hwan in 'Monster - 2016'
BY Julie Jones | Feb 02, 2016

Park Ki Woong

Park Ki Woong has announced that he will join Kang Ji Hwan in the upcoming MBC drama "Monster - 2016."

The actor's agency, Haewadal Entertainment, announced the decision on February 1. It will be Park's first leading drama role since playing a Japanese officer in the KBS historical drama "Bridal Mask" with co-star Joo Won and an idol group member in the comedy "Full House Take 2."

Park Ki Woong did have a cameo in "The Good Doctor," also with former co-star Joo Won, and was seen in two films since starting his 2014 tour of military duty, the 2014 "Mad Sad Bad" and the 2015 Kim Ki Duk production "Made in China." But Park's mandatory military duty as a conscripted policeman did keep him away from dramaland.

In "Monster - 2016," Park will play Do Geon Woo, the son of a company CEO and his mistress. His birthright will bring him into direct conflict with the character that Kang Ji Hwan plays. Kang plays Kang Ki Tan, a man who lost his parents when he was little. He wants to take revenge against the wealthy and careless individuals who ruined his life and caused him to suffer.

Kang Ji Hwan's role in the drama was reportedly offered to Joo Won, which would have given the actors a third chance to work together, but Joo ultimately turned it down. Seo Kang Joon also reportedly turned down the role, choosing instead to appear in the Korean remake of "Entourage."

Hwang Jung Eum was previously offered the leading female role in this drama but ultimately declined to focus on her upcoming wedding at the end of February.

Jang Young Chul, who wrote "Empress Ki," "History of the Salaryman," "Giant" and "Incarnation of Money," is writing the screenplay. Joo Sang Woo, who directed "Legendary Witches" and "One Hundred Years Inheritance," is directing 'Monster - 2016."

The 50-episode "Monster," previously titled "Tyrant," will air on Mondays and Tuesdays in April after the end of "Glamorous Temptation."

Oh, I just remembered that I had a question about the title.  Titles?  I guess it's been through several already...

The English title would still be Monster either way, but have they officially decided to go with 괴물 for the Korean title instead of just 몬스터?  I know it was 몬스터 for a while (as of the writing of this, at least), but now everything seems to be referring to it as 괴물.  Just curious if anyone knows for sure. :)

Was looking at the director's work yesterday, and realized that he and PKW have worked together before - in 2010's Golden Fish.  Which I did not finish, haha.  And...they've spelled his name wrong in this article.  It's Joo Sung Woo

about the title, yes, in the recent Korean news, they used a different hangul word, which still means monster or the host, which is the title of a Korean movie.

MBC Seong Yoo-ri in "Monster - 2016"? Never heard…

Will it be Han Ji-min or Sung Yuri for MBC’s Monster?
by javabeans | February 3, 2016

hanjimin_124.jpg

Ah, finally news of a potential leading lady for Monster, the revengey melo starring Kang Ji-hwan whose life is trampled by the super elite and who then sets out for payback. News has surfaced simultaneously that both Han Ji-min (Hyde Jekyll Me, Rooftop Prince) and Sung Yuri (Birth Secret, Feast of the Gods) are in contention, though both sides are very clear that they’re just considering.

Aside from the super awkwardness of courting two actresses publicly (who thought of that idea, and are they still employed?), I have to say I could get behind either pairing purely based on their prior outings with Kang Ji-hwan. (In fact, I even wonder if the drama went fishing for leading ladies specifically in his pool of former co-stars, to ensure a decent partnership. Was Kim Haneul busy?)

Of the two, I have to give Han Ji-min the edge for her acting skills, and she was adorable in her previous team-up with Kang, 2007’s Occupation-era rom-com-melo Capital Scandal. But while Sung Yuri is very hit or miss for me, I have a super soft spot for her tomboyish turn in 2008’s fantasy comic-action sageuk Hong Gil Dong, where she was likable and endearing in a way I’d never seen before or since. Plus, she and Kang Ji-hwan were very cute together there (they reteamed for the comedy movie Runway Cop a few years after that)… although maybe Kang Ji-hwan had better romantic chemistry with Han in Capital Scandal? Ahh, I can’t be rational about Hong Gil Dong though, it was silly and flawed but I loved the hero so.

Also in Monster’s cast are Park Ki-woong, Lee El, Jung Woong-in, Lee Deok-hwa, Park Young-kyu, and Go Yoon. Monster plans to begin filming its early scenes with its child actors later this week; it follows Dazzling Temptation as MBC’s next Monday-Tuesday drama beginning in March.

@LyraYoo wooohoo! high five! because when I watched Gaksital, I like him more than JW. #truthbetold :D

And because I wanna see his comeback, I'm gonna check this drama!  Hello, y'all!

Oh and I see JBA from SUFBB is part of this drama. I like her in that drama.
